Renormalization of nonlocal gluon operators on the lattice

We study the renormalization of a complete set of gauge-invariant gluon nonlocal operators in lattice perturbation theory. We determine the mixing pattern under renormalization of these operators using symmetry arguments, which extend beyond perturbation theory. Additionally, we derive the renormalization factors of the operators within the modified Minimal Subtraction $(\rm \overline{MS})$ scheme up to one-loop. To enable a non-perturbative renormalization procedure, we investigate a suitable version of the modified regularization-invariant (${\rm RI}'$) scheme, and we calculate the conversion factors from that scheme to $\rm\overline{MS}$. The computations are performed by employing both dimensional and lattice regularizations, using the Wilson gluon action. This work is relevant to nonperturbative studies of the gluon parton distribution functions (PDFs) on the lattice.

Renormalization of asymmetric staple-shaped Wilson-line operators in lattice and continuum perturbation theory

In this work, we study the renormalization of nonlocal quark bilinear operators containing an asymmetric staple-shaped Wilson line at the one-loop level in both lattice and continuum perturbation theory. These operators enter the first-principle calculation of transverse momentum-dependent parton distribution functions (TMDPDFs) in lattice QCD using the formulation of Large Momentum Effective Theory. We provide appropriate RI$'$-type conditions that address the power and logarithmic divergences, as well as the mixing among staple operators of different Dirac structures, using a number of different possible projectors. A variant of RI$'$, including calculations of rectangular Wilson loops, which cancel the pinch-pole singularities of the staple operators at infinite length and reduce residual power divergences, is also employed. We calculate at one-loop order the conversion matrix, which relates the quasi-TMDPDFs in the RI$'$-type schemes to the reference scheme $\overline{\rm MS}$ for arbitrary values of the renormalization momentum scale and of the dimensions of the staple.

Quark and gluon momentum fractions in the pion and in the kaon

We present the full decomposition of the momentum fraction carried by quarks and gluons in the pion and the kaon. We employ three gauge ensembles generated with $N_f=2+1+1$ Wilson twisted-mass clover-improved fermions at the physical quark masses. For both mesons we perform a continuum extrapolation directly at the physical pion mass, which allows us to determine for the first time the momentum decomposition at the physical point. We find that the total momentum fraction carried by quarks is 0.532(56) and 0.618(32) and by gluons 0.388(49) and 0.408(61) in the pion and in the kaon, respectively, in the $\overline{\mathrm{MS}}$ scheme and at the renormalization scale of 2 GeV. Having computed both the quark and gluon contributions in the continuum limit, we find that the momentum sum is 0.926(68) for the pion and 1.046(90) for the kaon, verifying the momentum sum rule.

Nonperturbative renormalization of asymmetric staple-shaped operators in twisted mass lattice QCD

Staple-shaped Wilson line operators are necessary for the study of transverse momentum-dependent parton distribution functions (TMDPDFs) in lattice QCD and beyond. In this work, we study the renormalization of such operators in the general case of an asymmetric staple. We analyze the mixing pattern of these operators using their symmetry properties, where we find that the possible mixing is restricted within groups of four operators. We then present numerical results using the regularization independent momentum subtraction (RI/MOM) scheme to study the importance of mixing using one operator in particular, the $γ_0$ operator. Based on these results, we consider the short distance ratio (SDR) scheme, which is desirable in the absence of mixing. Finally, we investigate a variant of the RI/MOM scheme, where the renormalization factors are computed at short distances.

Nucleon axial and pseudoscalar form factors using twisted-mass fermion ensembles at the physical point

We compute the nucleon axial and pseudoscalar form factors using three $N_f=$2+1+1 twisted mass fermion ensembles with all quark masses tuned to approximately their physical values. The values of the lattice spacings of these three physical point ensembles are 0.080 fm, 0.068 fm, and 0.057 fm, and spatial sizes 5.1 fm, 5.44 fm, and 5.47 fm, respectively, yielding $m_πL$>3.6. Convergence to the ground state matrix elements is assessed using multi-state fits. We study the momentum dependence of the three form factors and check the partially conserved axial-vector current (PCAC) hypothesis and the pion pole dominance (PPD). We show that in the continuum limit, the PCAC and PPD relations are satisfied. We also show that the Goldberger-Treimann relation is approximately fulfilled and determine the Goldberger-Treiman discrepancy. We find for the nucleon axial charge $g_A$=1.245(28)(14), for the axial radius $\langle r^2_A \rangle$=0.339(48)(06) fm$^2$, for the pion-nucleon coupling constant $g_{πNN} \equiv \lim_{Q^2 \rightarrow -m_π^2} G_{πNN}(Q^2)$=13.25(67)(69) and for $G_P(0.88m_μ^2)\equiv g_P^*$=8.99(39)(49).

Renormalization of non-local gluon operators in lattice perturbation theory

In this study, we investigate the renormalization of a complete set of gauge-invariant non-local gluon operators up to one-loop in lattice perturbation theory. Our computations have been performed in both dimensional and lattice regularizations, using the Wilson gluon action, leading to the renormalization functions in the modified Minimal Subtraction $(\overline{\text{MS}})$ scheme, as well as conversion factors from the modified regularization invariant $(RI')$ scheme to $\overline{\text{MS}}$.

Perturbative study of renormalization and mixing for asymmetric staple-shaped Wilson-line operators on the lattice

We present one-loop perturbative results of the renormalization functions for a complete set of nonlocal quark bilinear operators containing an asymmetric staple-shaped Wilson line, using a family of improved lattice actions. This study is relevant for the nonperturbative investigations regarding the renormalization of the unpolarized, helicity and transversity transverse-momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDPDFs) in lattice QCD. We employ a number of different versions of regularization-independent (RI$'$) renormalization prescriptions which address the power and logarithmic divergences of such nonlocal operators, the pinch-pole singularities at infinite Wilson-line lengths, as well as the mixing among operators of different Dirac structures, as dictated by discrete symmetries. All cancelations of divergences and admixtures are confirmed by our results at one-loop level. We compare all the different prescriptions and we provide the conversion matrices at one-loop order which relate the matrix elements of the staple operators in RI$'$ to the reference scheme $\overline{\rm MS}$.

Mass effects on the QCD $β$-function

In this study we present lattice results on the QCD $β$-function in the presence of quark masses. The $β$-function is calculated to three loops in perturbation theory and for improved lattice actions; it is extracted from the renormalization of the coupling constant $Z_g$. The background field method is used to compute $Z_g$, where it is simply related to the background gluon field renormalization constant $Z_A$. We focus on the quark mass effects in the background gluon propagator; the dependence of the QCD $β$-function on the number of colors $N_c$, the number of fermionic flavors $N_f$ and the quark masses, is shown explicitly. The perturbative results of the QCD $β$-function will be applied to the precise determination of the strong coupling constant, calculated by Monte Carlo simulations removing the mass effects from the nonperturbative Green's functions.

Supercurrent renormalization of $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on the lattice

Supersymmetry on the lattice is explicitly broken by the gluino mass and lattice artifacts. However, it can be restored in the continuum limit by fine tuning the parameters based on the renormalized Ward identities. On the renormalization step not only the mass but also the renormalization of the supercurrent needs to be addressed. Here we present a lattice investigation to obtain the renormalization factors of the supercurrent for $\mathcal{N}$=1 Super-Yang Mills theory in a gauge invariant renormalization scheme. We also provide the conversion factors which are necessary in order to translate our results to the more standard $\overline{\text{MS}}$ scheme.

Noether supercurrent operator mixing from lattice perturbation theory

In this work we present perturbative results for the renormalization of the supercurrent operator, $S_μ$, in ${\cal N} =1$ Supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. At the quantum level, this operator mixes with both gauge invariant and noninvariant operators, which have the same global transformation properties. In total, there are 13 linearly independent mixing operators of the same and lower dimensionality. We determine, via lattice perturbation theory, the first two rows of the mixing matrix, which refer to the renormalization of $S_μ$, and of the gauge invariant mixing operator, $T_μ$. To extract these mixing coefficients in the ${\overline{\rm MS}}$ renormalization scheme and at one-loop order, we compute the relevant two-point and three-point Green's functions of $S_μ$ and $T_μ$ in two regularizations: dimensional and lattice. On the lattice, we employ the plaquette gluonic action and for the gluinos we use the fermionic Wilson action with clover improvement.

Nucleon transverse quark spin densities

We present a calculation of the Mellin moments of the nucleon transverse quark spin densities extracted from the unpolarized and transversity generalized form factors. We use three $N_F=2+1+1$ ensembles of twisted mass fermions with quark masses tuned to their physical values and lattice spacings $a\sim 0.08$~fm, $a\sim 0.07$~fm and $a\sim 0.06$~fm and extrapolate the form factors to the continuum limit. Besides isovector densities we also include results for the tensor charge for each quark flavor using the ensemble with $a\sim 0.08$~fm for which we include the disconnected contributions.

Nonperturbative renormalization of the supercurrent in $\mathcal{N} = 1$ Supersymmetric Yang-Mills Theory

In this work, we study the nonperturbative renormalization of the supercurrent operator in $\mathcal{N} = 1$ Supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory, using a gauge-invariant renormalization scheme (GIRS). The proposed prescription addresses successfully the unwanted mixing of the supercurrent with other operators of equal or lower dimension, which respect the same global symmetries. This mixing is introduced by the unavoidable breaking of supersymmetry on the lattice. In GIRS all gauge-noninvariant operators, which mix with the supercurrent, are excluded from the renormalization procedure. The one remaining mixing operator is accessible by numerical simulations. We present results for the renormalization of the supercurrent using a GIRS scheme. We also compute at one-loop order the conversion matrix which relates the nonperturbative renormalization factors in GIRS to the reference scheme $\bar{\rm MS}$.

Perturbative renormalization of the supercurrent operator in lattice ${\cal N}{=}1$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory

In this work we perform a perturbative study of the Noether supercurrent operator in the context of Supersymmetric ${\cal N}{=}1$ Yang-Mills (SYM) theory on the lattice. The supercurrent mixes with several other operators, some of which are not gauge invariant, having the same quantum numbers. We determine, to one loop order, the renormalization and all corresponding mixing coefficients by computing relevant Green's functions of each one of the mixing operators with external elementary fields. Our calculations are performed both in dimensional and lattice regularization. From the first regularization we obtain the $\bar{MS}$-renormalized Green's functions; comparison of the latter with the corresponding Green's functions in the lattice regularization leads to the extraction of the lattice renormalization factors and mixing coefficients in the $\bar{MS}$ scheme. The lattice calculations are performed to lowest order in the lattice spacing, using Wilson gluons and clover improved gluinos. The lattice results can be used in nonperturbative studies of supersymmetric Ward identities.

Supercurrent Renormalization in $\mathcal{N}=1$ Supersymmetric Yang-Mills Theory

In this work we study the renormalization of the SUSY Noether current in Supersymmetric $\mathcal{N}$ = 1 Yang-Mills (SYM) theory on the lattice. In particular, we study the mixing of the current with all other compatible operators of dimension 7/2 and 5/2, leading from the lattice-regularized to the $\overline{\rm MS}$-renormalized operator basis. We perform our task in two ways: (a) We compute, in dimensional regularization, the conversion factors relating the $\overline{\rm MS}$ scheme to an intermediate gauge-invariant coordinate-space scheme. In this second scheme, renormalization can be performed via lattice simulations. This could help to investigate the breaking of SUSY on the lattice and strategies towards simulations of supersymmetric QCD. Here we present some preliminary numerical results. (b) We use lattice perturbation theory and compute, to one loop, various two- and three-point functions. We consider mixing with all relevant gauge-noninvariant operators, which contain also ghost fields.

Perturbative study of the Gluino-Glue operator in SYM

We investigate the renormalization of the Gluino-Glue operator, using both Lattice Perturbation Theory (LPT) and a Gauge Invariant Renormalization Scheme (GIRS). The latter scheme involves gauge-invariant Green's functions of two operators at different space-time points, which can be also computed via numerical simulations. There is no need to fix a gauge and the mixing with gauge noninvariant operators is inconsequential. We calculate perturbatively the conversion factor relating GIRS with the Modified Minimal Subtraction scheme. On the other hand, the Gluino-Glue operator being mixes with several gauge noninvariant operators which have the same quantum numbers. The determination of the mixing matrix on the lattice demands the calculation of 2-pt and 3-pt Green's functions with external gluon, gluino and ghost fields using LPT. We compute at one-loop order the renormalization of the Gluino-Glue operator and all operator mixing coefficients.

Gauge-invariant Renormalization of the Gluino-Glue operator

We study the Gluino-Glue operator in the context of Supersymmetric ${\cal N}{=}1$ Yang-Mills (SYM) theory. This composite operator is gauge invariant, and it is directly connected to light bound states of the theory; its renormalization is very important as a necessary step for the study of low-lying bound states via numerical simulations. We make use of a Gauge-Invariant Renormalization Scheme (GIRS). This requires the calculation of the Green's function of a product of two Gluino-Glue operators, situated at distinct space-time points. Within this scheme, the mixing with non-gauge invariant operators which have the same quantum numbers is inconsequential. We compute the one-loop conversion factor relating the GIRS scheme to $\overline{\rm MS}$. This conversion factor can be used in order to convert to $\overline{\rm MS}$ Green's functions which are obtained via lattice simulations and are renormalized nonperturbatively in GIRS.

Two-loop renormalization and mixing of gluon and quark energy-momentum tensor operators

In this paper, we present one- and two-loop results for the renormalization of the gluon and quark gauge-invariant operators which appear in the definition of the QCD energy-momentum tensor, in dimensional regularization. To this end, we consider a variety of Green's functions with different incoming momenta. We identify the set of twist-2 symmetric traceless and flavor singlet operators which mix among themselves and we calculate the corresponding mixing coefficients for the nondiagonal components. We also provide results for some appropriate regularization-independent (RI')-like schemes, which address this mixing, and we discuss their application to nonperturbative studies via lattice simulations. Finally, we extract the one- and two-loop expressions of the conversion factors between the proposed RI' and the MSbar schemes. From our results regarding the MSbar-renormalized Green's functions, one can easily derive conversion factors relating numerous variants of RI'-like schemes to MSbar. To make our results easily accessible, we also provide them as Supplemental Material, in the form of a Mathematica input file and, also, an equivalent text file.

One-loop renormalization of staple-shaped operators in continuum and lattice regularizations

In this paper we present one-loop results for the renormalization of nonlocal quark bilinear operators, containing a staple-shaped Wilson line, in both continuum and lattice regularizations. The continuum calculations were performed in dimensional regularization, and the lattice calculations for the Wilson/clover fermion action and for a variety of Symanzik-improved gauge actions. We extract the strength of the one-loop linear and logarithmic divergences (including cusp divergences), which appear in such nonlocal operators; we identify the mixing pairs which occur among some of these operators on the lattice, and we calculate the corresponding mixing coefficients. We also provide the appropriate RI'-like scheme, which disentangles this mixing nonperturbatively from lattice simulation data, as well as the one-loop expressions of the conversion factors, which turn the lattice data to the MS-bar scheme. Our results can be immediately used for improving recent nonperturbative investigations of transverse momentum-dependent distribution functions (TMDs) on the lattice. Finally, extending our perturbative study to general Wilson-line lattice operators with n cusps, we present results for their renormalization factors, including identification of mixing and determination of the corresponding mixing coefficients, based on our results for the staple operators.
