Electronic structure of (LaNiO$_3$)$_2$/(LaAlO$_3$)$_N$ heterostructures grown along [111]

The electronic structure of a LaNiO$_3$ bilayer grown along the [111] direction and confined between insulating layers of LaAlO$_3$ is theoretically investigated using a combination of first principle calculations and effective multi-orbital lattice models. The LDA band structure is well reproduced by a tight-binding model for the Ni-$e_g$ orbitals defined on the buckled honeycomb lattice. We highlight peculiar properties of this model which include almost flat bands as well as linear and quadratic band crossing points. The effect of local correlations is discussed within the LDA$+U$ scheme and within the Hartree-Fock approximation for interacting multi-orbital lattice models. Over a wide range of interaction parameters we find that a ferromagnetic phase is energetically favored. We discuss the possibility of additional orbital order which could stabilize a spontaneous Chern insulator with chiral edge modes or a staggered orbital phase with a $\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3}$ reconstruction of the unit cell. By studying an interacting nickel-oxygen lattice model we find that the stability of these orbitally ordered phases also depends on the value of the charge-transfer energy. Controlling the charge-transfer energy might therefore be an important step towards engineering exotic electronic phases in certain classes of oxide heterostructures.

Exact Chiral Spin Liquids and Mean-Field Perturbations of Gamma Matrix Models on the Ruby Lattice

We theoretically study an exactly solvable Gamma matrix generalization of the Kitaev spin model on the ruby lattice, which is a honeycomb lattice with "expanded" vertices and links. We find this model displays an exceptionally rich phase diagram that includes: (i) gapless phases with stable spin fermi surfaces, (ii) gapless phases with low-energy Dirac cones and quadratic band touching points, and (iii) gapped phases with finite Chern numbers possessing the values {\pm}4,{\pm}3,{\pm}2 and {\pm}1. The model is then generalized to include Ising-like interactions that break the exact solvability of the model in a controlled manner. When these terms are dominant, they lead to a trivial Ising ordered phase which is shown to be adiabatically connected to a large coupling limit of the exactly solvable phase. In the limit when these interactions are weak, we treat them within mean-field theory and present the resulting phase diagrams. We discuss the nature of the transitions between various phases. Our results highlight the richness of possible ground states in closely related magnetic systems.

Spatially anisotropic kagome antiferromagnet with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction

We theoretically study the spatially anisotropic spin-1/2 kagome antiferromagnet with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction using a renormalization group analysis in the quasi-one-dimensional limit. We identify the various temperature and energy scales for ordering in the system. For very weak DM interaction, we find a low-temperature spiral phase with the plane of the spiral selected by the DM interaction. This phase is similar to a previously identified phase in the absence of the DM interaction. However, above a critical DM interaction strength we find a transition to a phase with coexisting antiferromagnetic and dimer order, reminiscent of one-dimensional antiferromagnetic systems with a uniform DM interaction. Our results help shed light on the fate of two dimensional systems with both strong interactions and significant spin-orbit coupling.

Visualizing landscapes of the superconducting gap in heterogeneous superconductor thin films: geometric influences on proximity effects

The proximity effect is a central feature of superconducting junctions as it underlies many important applications in devices and can be exploited in the design of new systems with novel quantum functionality. Recently, exotic proximity effects have been observed in various systems, such as superconductor-metallic nanowires and graphene-superconductor structures. However, it is still not clear how superconducting order propagates spatially in a heterogeneous superconductor system. Here we report intriguing influences of junction geometry on the proximity effect for a 2D heterogeneous superconductor system comprised of 2D superconducting islands on top of a surface metal. Depending on the local geometry, the superconducting gap induced in the surface metal region can either be confined to the boundary of the superconductor, in which the gap decays within a short distance (~ 15 nm), or can be observed nearly uniformly over a distance of many coherence lengths due to non-local proximity effects.

Exactly Solvable Topological Chiral Spin Liquid with Random Exchange

We extend the Yao-Kivelson decorated honeycomb lattice Kitaev model [Phys. Rev. Lett. 99,247203 (2007)] of an exactly solvable chiral spin liquid by including disordered exchange couplings. We have determined the phase diagram of this system and found that disorder enlarges the region of the topological non-Abelian phase with finite Chern number. We study the energy level statistics as a function of disorder and other parameters in the Hamiltonian, and show that the phase transition between the non-Abelian and Abelian phases of the model at large disorder can be associated with pair annihilation of extended states at zero energy. Analogies to integer quantum Hall systems, topological Anderson insulators, and disordered topological Chern insulators are discussed.

Topological Order and Semions in a Strongly Correlated Quantum Spin Hall Insulator

We provide a self-consistent mean-field framework to study the effect of strong interactions in a quantum spin Hall insulator on the honeycomb lattice. We identify an exotic phase for large spin-orbit coupling and intermediate Hubbard interaction. This phase is gapped in the bulk, has gapless edge states and does not break any symmetry. Instead, we find a four-fold topological degeneracy of the ground state on the torus and fractionalized excitations with semionic mutual braiding statistics. Our work highlights the important theme that interesting phases arise in the regime of strong spin-orbit coupling and interactions.

Doping the Kane-Mele-Hubbard model: A Slave-Boson Approach

We study the Kane-Mele-Hubbard model both at half-filling and away from half-filling using a slave-boson mean-field approach at zero temperature. We obtain a phase diagram at half-filling and discuss its connection to recent results from quantum Monte Carlo, slave-rotor, and $Z_2$ mean-field studies. In particular, we find a small window in parameter space where a spin liquid phase with gapped spin and charge excitations reside. Upon doping, we show the spin liquid state becomes a superconducting state by explicitly calculating the singlet pairing order parameters. Interestingly, we find an "optimal" doping for such superconductivity. Our work reveals some of the phenomenology associated with doping an interacting system with strong spin-orbit coupling.

Topological insulators from complex orbital order in transition-metal oxides heterostructures

Topological band insulators which are dynamically generated by electron-electron interactions have been the- oretically proposed in two and three dimensional lattice models. We present evidence that the two-dimensional version can be stabilized in digital (111) heterostructures of transition-metal oxides as a result of purely local interactions. The topological phases are accompanied by spontaneous ordering of complex orbitals and we discuss their stability with respect to the Hund's rule coupling, Jahn-Teller interaction and inversion symmetry breaking terms. As main competitors we identify spin-nematic and magnetic phases.

Topological Insulators and Quantum Spin Liquids

In this paper we review some connections recently discovered between topological insulators and certain classes of quantum spin liquids, focusing on two and three spatial dimensions. In two dimensions we show the integer quantum Hall effect plays a key role in relating topological insulators and chiral spin liquids described by fermionic excitations, and we describe a procedure for "generating" a certain class of topological states. In three dimensions we discuss interesting relationships between certain quantum spin liquids and interacting "exotic" variants of topological insulators. We focus attention on better understanding interactions in topological insulators, and the phases nearby in parameter space that might result from moderate to strong interactions in the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling. We stress that oxides with heavy transition metal ions, which often host a competition between electron interactions and spin-orbit coupling, are an excellent place to search for unusual topological phenomena and other unconventional phases.

Topological insulators and fractional quantum Hall effect on the ruby lattice

We study a tight-binding model on the two-dimensional ruby lattice. This lattice supports several types of first and second neighbor spin-dependent hopping parameters in an $s$-band model that preserves time-reversal symmetry. We discuss the phase diagram of this model for various values of the hopping parameters and filling fractions, and note an interesting competition between spin-orbit terms that individually would drive the system to a $Z_2$ topological insulating phase. We also discuss a closely related spin-polarized model with only first and second neighbor hoppings and show that extremely flat bands with finite Chern numbers result, with a ratio of the band gap to the band width approximately 70. Such flat bands are an ideal platform to realize a fractional quantum Hall effect at appropriate filling fractions. The ruby lattice can be possibly engineered in optical lattices, and may open the door to studies of transitions between quantum spin liquids, topological insulators, and integer and fractional quantum Hall states.

Universal Quenching of Superconductivity in Two-dimensional Nano-islands

We systematically address superconductivity of Pb nano-islands with different thicknesses and lateral sizes via a scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy. Reduction of the superconducting gap is observed even when the island is larger than the bulk coherence length and becomes very fast below ~ 50 nm lateral size. The suppression of gap with size depends to a good approximation only on the volume of the island and is independent of its shape. Theoretical analysis indicates that the universal quenching behavior is primarily manifested by the mean number of electronic orbitals within the pairing energy window.

Exact Chiral Spin Liquid with Stable Spin Fermi Surface on the Kagome Lattice

We study an exactly solvable quantum spin model of Kitaev type on the kagome lattice. We find a rich phase diagram which includes a topological (gapped) chiral spin liquid with gapless chiral edge states, and a gapless chiral spin liquid phase with a spin Fermi surface. The ground state of the current model contains an odd number of electrons per unit cell which qualitatively distinguishes it from previously studied exactly solvable models with a spin Fermi surface. Moreover, we show that the spin Fermi surface is stable against weak perturbations.

Fractionally charged topological point defects on the kagome lattice

We study a two-dimensional system of spin-polarized fermions on the kagome lattice at filling fraction f=1/3 interacting through a nearest-neighbor interaction V. Above a critical interaction strength V_c a charge-density wave with a broken Z_3 symmetry is stabilized. Using the unrestricted mean-field approximation, we present several arguments showing that elementary topological point defects in the order parameter bind a fractional charge. Our analysis makes use of two appealing properties of the model: (i) For weak interaction, the low-energy degrees of freedom are described by Dirac fermions coupled to a complex-valued mass field (order parameter). (ii) The nearest-neighbor interaction is geometrically frustrated at filling f=1/3. Both properties offer a route to fractionalization and yield a consistent value 1/2 for the fractional charge as long as the symmetry between the up and the down triangles of the kagome lattice is preserved. If this symmetry is violated, the value of the bound charge varies continuously with the strength of the symmetry-breaking term in the model. In addition, we have numerically computed the confining potential between two fractionally charged defects. We find that it grows linearly at large distances but can show a minimum at a finite separation for intermediate interactions. This indicates that the polaron state, formed upon doping the charge-density wave, can be viewed as a bound state of two defects.

Competing Exotic Topological Insulator Phases in Transition Metal Oxides on the Pyrochlore Lattice with Distortion

In this work we investigate the phase diagram of heavy (4d and 5d) transition metal oxides on the pyrochlore lattice, such as those of the form $\mathrm{A_2M_2O_7}$, where A is a rare earth element and M is a transition metal element. We focus on the competition between Coulomb interaction, spin-orbit coupling, and lattice distortion when these energy scales are comparable. Strong spin-orbit coupling entangles the spin and the $t_{2g}$ $d$-orbitals giving rise to doublet $j=1/2$ and quadruplet $j=3/2$ states. In contrast to previous works which focused on the doublet manifold, we also discuss the quadruplet manifold which is relevant for several pyrochlore oxides. The Coulomb interaction is taken into account by use of the slave-rotor mean field theory and different classes of lattice distortions which further split the levels of the quadruplet $j=3/2$ manifold are studied. Various topological phases are predicted, including exotic strong and weak topological Mott insulating phases. We discuss the general structure of the phase diagram for several values of $d$-shell filling and various symmetry classes of lattice distortions. Our results are relevant to the search for exotic topological insulators and quantum spin liquids in strongly correlated materials with strong spin-orbit coupling.

Non-Fermi Liquid Quantum Impurity Physics from non-Abelian Quantum Hall States

We study the physics of electron tunneling between multiple quantum dots and the edge of a quantum Hall state. Our results generalize earlier work [G. A. Fiete, W. Bishara, C. Nayak, Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 176801 (2008)] in which it was shown that a single quantum dot tunnel coupled to a non-Abelian quantum Hall state can realize a stable multi-channel Kondo fixed point at low-energy. In this work, we investigate the physics of multiple dots and find that a rich set of possible low-energy fixed points arises, including those with non-Fermi liquid properties. Previously unidentified fixed points may also be among the possibilities. We examine both the situation where the dots are spatially separated and where they are in close proximity. We discuss the relation to previous work on two-impurity Kondo models in Fermi liquids and highlight new research directions in multiple quantum impurity problems.

Spontaneous Quantum Hall States in Chirally-stacked Few-Layer Graphene Systems

Chirally stacked N-layer graphene systems with N >= 2 exhibit a variety of distinct broken symmetry states in which charge density contributions from different spins and valleys are spontaneously transferred between layers. We explain how these states are distinguished by their charge, spin, and valley Hall conductivities, by their orbital magnetizations, and by their edge state properties. We argue that valley Hall states have [N/2] edge channels per spin-valley.
