Augmented Gamma-spaces, the stable rank filtration, and a bu-analogue of the Whitehead Conjecture

We explore connections between our earlier work, in which we constructed spectra that interpolate between bu and HZ, and earlier work of Kuhn and Priddy on the Whitehead conjecture and of Rognes on the stable rank filtration in algebraic K-theory. We construct a "chain complex of spectra" that is a bu-analogue of an auxiliary complex used by Kuhn-Priddy; we conjecture that this chain complex is "exact"; and we give some supporting evidence. We tie this to work of Rognes by showing that our auxiliary complex can be constructed in terms of the stable rank filtration. As a by-product, we verify for the case of topological complex K-theory a conjecture made by Rognes about the connectivity (for certain rings) of the filtration subquotients of the stable rank filtration of algebraic K-theory.

Operads and chain rules for the calculus of functors

We study the structure possessed by the Goodwillie derivatives of a pointed homotopy functor of based topological spaces. These derivatives naturally form a bimodule over the operad consisting of the derivatives of the identity functor. We then use these bimodule structures to give a chain rule for higher derivatives in the calculus of functors, extending that of Klein and Rognes. This chain rule expresses the derivatives of FG as a derived composition product of the derivatives of F and G over the derivatives of the identity. There are two main ingredients in our proofs. Firstly, we construct new models for the Goodwillie derivatives of functors of spectra. These models allow for natural composition maps that yield operad and module structures. Then, we use a cosimplicial cobar construction to transfer this structure to functors of topological spaces. A form of Koszul duality for operads of spectra plays a key role in this.

Derivatives of embedding functors I: the stable case

For smooth manifolds $M$ and $N$, let $\Ebar(M, N)$ be the homotopy fiber of the map $\Emb(M, N)\longrightarrow \Imm(M, N)$. Consider the functor from the category of Euclidean spaces to the category of spectra, defined by the formula $V\mapsto Σ^\infty\Ebar(M, N\times V)$. In this paper, we describe the Taylor polynomials of this functor, in the sense of M. Weiss' orthogonal calculus, in the case when $N$ is a nice open submanifold of a Euclidean space. This leads to a description of the derivatives of this functor when $N$ is a tame stably parallelizable manifold (we believe that the parallelizability assumption is not essential). Our construction involves a certain space of rooted forests (or, equivalently, a space of partitions) with leaves marked by points in $M$, and a certain ``homotopy bundle of spectra'' over this space of trees. The $n$-th derivative is then described as the ``spectrum of restricted sections'' of this bundle. This is the first in a series of two papers. In the second part, we will give an analogous description of the derivatives of the functor $\Ebar(M, N\times V)$, involving a similar construction with certain spaces of connected graphs (instead of forests) with points marked in $M$.

Coformality and the rational homotopy groups of spaces of long knots

We show that the Bousfield-Kan spectral sequence which computes the rational homotopy groups of the space of long knots in ${\mathbb R}^d$, where $d\ge 4$, collapses at the $E^2$ page. The main ingredients in the proof are Sinha's cosimplicial model for the space of long knots and a coformality result for the little balls operad.

Calculus of functors, operad formality, and rational homology of embedding spaces

Let M be a smooth manifold and V a Euclidean space. Let Ebar(M,V) be the homotopy fiber of the map from Emb(M,V) to Imm(M,V). This paper is about the rational homology of Ebar(M,V). We study it by applying embedding calculus and orthogonal calculus to the bi-functor (M,V) |--> HQ /\Ebar(M,V)_+. Our main theorem states that if the dimension of V is more than twice the embedding dimension of M, the Taylor tower in the sense of orthogonal calculus (henceforward called ``the orthogonal tower'') of this functor splits as a product of its layers. Equivalently, the rational homology spectral sequence associated with the tower collapses at E^1. In the case of knot embeddings, this spectral sequence coincides with the Vassiliev spectral sequence. The main ingredients in the proof are embedding calculus and Kontsevich's theorem on the formality of the little balls operad. We write explicit formulas for the layers in the orthogonal tower of the functor HQ /\Ebar(M,V)_+. The formulas show, in particular, that the (rational) homotopy type of the layers of the orthogonal tower is determined by the (rational) homology type of M. This, together with our rational splitting theorem, implies that under the above assumption on codimension, the rational homology groups of Ebar(M,V) are determined by the rational homology type of M.

A note on the homology of $Σ_n$, the Schwartz genus, and solving polynomial equations

We calculate a certain homological obstruction introduced by De Concini, Procesi and Salvetti in their study of the Schwartz genus of the fibration from the space of ordered configuration of points in the plane to the space of the unordered configurations. We show that their obstruction group vanishes in almost all, but not all, the hitherto unknown cases. It follows that if $n$ is not a power of a prime, or twice the power of a prime, then the genus is less than $n$. The case of $n=2p^k$ where $p$ is an odd prime remains undecided for some $p$ and $k$.
