Flux Correlations in Supersonic Isothermal Turbulence

Using data from a large-scale three-dimensional simulation of supersonic isothermal turbulence, we have tested the validity of an exact flux relation derived analytically from the Navier--Stokes equation by Falkovich, Fouxon and Oz [2010 New relations for correlation functions in Navier--Stokes turbulence. J. Fluid Mech. 644, 465]. That relation, for compressible barotropic fluids, was derived assuming turbulence generated by a large-scale force. However, compressible turbulence in simulations is usually initialized and maintained by a large-scale acceleration, as in gravity-driven astrophysical flows. We present a new approximate flux relation for isothermal turbulence driven by a large-scale acceleration, and find it in reasonable agreement with the simulation results.

Phase transitions in optical turbulence

We consider turbulence in the Gross-Pitaevsky model and study the creation of a coherent condensate via an inverse cascade originated at small scales. The growth of the condensate leads to a spontaneous breakdown of symmetries of small-scale over-condensate fluctuations: first, statistical isotropy is broken, then series of phase transitions mark the change of symmetry from the two-fold to three-fold to four-fold. At the highest condensate level reached, we observe a short-range positional and long-range orientational order (similar to a hexatic phase in the condensed matter physics). In other words, the longer one pumps the system the more ordered it becomes. We show that these phase transitions happen when the driving term corresponds to an instability (i.e. it is multiplicative in the k-space) but not when the system is pumped by a random force. Thus we demonstrate for the first time non-universality of the inverse-cascade turbulence. We also describe anisotropic spectral flux flows in k-space, anomalous correlations of fluctuations and collective oscillations of turbulence-condensate system.

Fractal iso-contours of passive scalar in smooth random flows

We consider a passive scalar field under the action of pumping, diffusion and advection by a smooth flow with a Lagrangian chaos. We present theoretical arguments showing that scalar statistics is not conformal invariant and formulate new effective semi-analytic algorithm to model the scalar turbulence. We then carry massive numerics of passive scalar turbulence with the focus on the statistics of nodal lines. The distribution of contours over sizes and perimeters is shown to depend neither on the flow realization nor on the resolution (diffusion) scale $r_d$ for scales exceeding $r_d$. The scalar isolines are found fractal/smooth at the scales larger/smaller than the pumping scale $L$. We characterize the statistics of bending of a long isoline by the driving function of the Löwner map, show that it behaves like diffusion with the diffusivity independent of resolution yet, most surprisingly, dependent on the velocity realization and the time of scalar evolution.

Vorticity statistics in the direct cascade of two-dimensional turbulence

For the steady-state direct cascade of two-dimensional Navier-Stokes turbulence, we derive analytically the probability of strong vorticity fluctuations. The probability density function (pdf) of the vorticity coarse-grained over a scale in the inertial interval is shown to have a universal self-similar form, in distinction from other known direct cascades. The tails of the pdf are found to be exponential.

New relations for correlation functions in Navier-Stokes turbulence

We consider the steady-state statistics of turbulence sustained by a large-scale force. The Kolmogorov flux relation (4/5-law) is shown to be a particular case of the general relation on the current-density correlation function. Using that, we derive an analog of the flux relation for compressible turbulence and a new exact relation for incompressible turbulence.

Fluctuation relations in simple examples of non-equilibrium steady states

We discuss fluctuation relations in simple cases of non-equilibrium Langevin dynamics. In particular, we show that close to non-equilibrium steady states with non-vanishing probability currents some of these relations reduce to a modified version of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. The latter may be interpreted as the equilibrium-like relation in the reference frame moving with the mean local velocity determined by the probability current.

Fluid-particle separation in a random flow described by the telegraph model

We study the statistics of the relative separation between two fluid particles in a spatially smooth and temporally random flow. The Lagrangian strain is modelled by a telegraph noise, which is a stationary random Markov process that can only take two values with known transition probabilities. The simplicity of the model enables us to write closed equations for the inter-particle distance in the presence of a finite-correlated noise. In 1D, we are able to find analytically the long-time growth rates of the distance moments and the senior Lyapunov exponent, which consistently turns out to be negative. We also find the exact expression for the Cramér function and show that it satisfies the fluctuation relation (for the probability of positive and negative entropy production) despite the time irreversibility of the strain statistics. For the 2D incompressible isotropic case, we obtain the Lyapunov exponent (positive) and the asymptotic growth rates of the moments in two opposite limits of fast and slow strain. The quasi-deterministic limit (of slow strain) turns out to be singular, while a perfect agreement is found with the already-known delta-correlated case.

Sling effect in collisions of water droplets in turbulent clouds

We describe and evaluate the contribution of sling effect into the collision rate of the same-size water droplets in turbulent clouds. We show that already for Stokes numbers exceeding 0.2 the sling effect gives a contribution comparable to Saffman-Turner contribution, which may explain why the latter consistently underestimates collision rate (even with the account of preferential concentration).

Anomalous scaling of passive scalar in turbulence and in equilibrium

We analyze multi-point correlation functions of a tracer in an incompressible flow at scales far exceeding the scale $L$ at which fluctuations are generated (quasi-equilibrium domain) and compare them with the correlation functions at scales smaller than $L$ (turbulence domain). We demonstrate that the scale invariance can be broken in the equilibrium domain and trace this breakdown to the statistical integrals of motion (zero modes) as has been done before for turbulence. Employing Kraichnan model of short-correlated velocity we identify the new type of zero modes, which break scale invariance and determine an anomalously slow decay of correlations at large scales.

Entropy production away from the equilibrium

For a system moving away from equilibrium, we express the entropy production via a two-point correlation function for any time and any distance from equilibrium. The long-time limit gives the sum of the Lyapunov exponents for a general dynamical system expressed via the formula of a Green-Kubo type.

Single-point velocity distribution in turbulence

We show that the tails of the single-point velocity probability distribution function (PDF) are generally non-Gaussian in developed turbulence. By using instanton formalism for the Navier-Stokes equation, we establish the relation between the PDF tails of the velocity and those of the external forcing. In particular, we show that a Gaussian random force having correlation scale $L$ and correlation time $τ$ produces velocity PDF tails $\ln{\cal P}(v)\propto-v^4$ at $v\gg v_{rms}, L/τ$. For a short-correlated forcing when $τ\ll L/v_{rms}$ there is an intermediate asymptotics $\ln {\cal P}(v)\propto-v^3$ at $L/τ\gg v\gg v_{rms}$.

Is 2d Turbulence a Conformal Turbulence?

A critical analysis of the conformal approach to the theory of 2d turbulence is delivered. It is shown, in particular, that conformal minimal models cannot give a general turbulent solution, which should provide for constant fluxes of all vorticity integrals of motion.

Spectra of Conformal Turbulence

A set of different conformal solutions corresponding to a constant flux of squared vorticity is considered. Requiring constant fluxes of all inviscid vorticity invariants (higher powers of the vorticity), we come to the conclusion that the general turbulence spectrum should be given by Kraichnan's expression $E(k)\propto k\sp{-3}$. This spectrum, in particular, can be obtained as a limit of some subsequences of the conformal solutions.
