On Complexity of Minimum Leaf Out-branching Problem

Given a digraph $D$, the Minimum Leaf Out-Branching problem (MinLOB) is the problem of finding in $D$ an out-branching with the minimum possible number of leaves, i.e., vertices of out-degree 0. Gutin, Razgon and Kim (2008) proved that MinLOB is polynomial time solvable for acyclic digraphs which are exactly the digraphs of directed path-width (DAG-width, directed tree-width, respectively) 0. We investigate how much one can extend this polynomiality result. We prove that already for digraphs of directed path-width (directed tree-width, DAG-width, respectively) 1, MinLOB is NP-hard. On the other hand, we show that for digraphs of restricted directed tree-width (directed path-width, DAG-width, respectively) and a fixed integer $k$, the problem of checking whether there is an out-branching with at most $k$ leaves is polynomial time solvable.

Properly Coloured Cycles and Paths: Results and Open Problems

In this paper, we consider a number of results and seven conjectures on properly edge-coloured (PC) paths and cycles in edge-coloured multigraphs. We overview some known results and prove new ones. In particular, we consider a family of transformations of an edge-coloured multigraph $G$ into an ordinary graph that allow us to check the existence PC cycles and PC $(s,t)$-paths in $G$ and, if they exist, to find shortest ones among them. We raise a problem of finding the optimal transformation and consider a possible solution to the problem.

Note on edge-colored graphs and digraphs without properly colored cycles

We study the following two functions: d(n,c) and $\vec{d}(n,c)$; d(n,c) ($\vec{d}(n,c)$) is the minimum number k such that every c-edge-colored undirected (directed) graph of order n and minimum monochromatic degree (out-degree) at least k has a properly colored cycle. Abouelaoualim et al. (2007) stated a conjecture which implies that d(n,c)=1. Using a recursive construction of c-edge-colored graphs with minimum monochromatic degree p and without properly colored cycles, we show that $d(n,c)\ge {1 \over c}(\log_cn -\log_c\log_cn)$ and, thus, the conjecture does not hold. In particular, this inequality significantly improves a lower bound on $\vec{d}(n,2)$ obtained by Gutin, Sudakov and Yeo in 1998.

Better Algorithms and Bounds for Directed Maximum Leaf Problems

The {\sc Directed Maximum Leaf Out-Branching} problem is to find an out-branching (i.e. a rooted oriented spanning tree) in a given digraph with the maximum number of leaves. In this paper, we improve known parameterized algorithms and combinatorial bounds on the number of leaves in out-branchings. We show that \begin{itemize} \item every strongly connected digraph $D$ of order $n$ with minimum in-degree at least 3 has an out-branching with at least $(n/4)^{1/3}-1$ leaves; \item if a strongly connected digraph $D$ does not contain an out-branching with $k$ leaves, then the pathwidth of its underlying graph is $O(k\log k)$; \item it can be decided in time $2^{O(k\log^2 k)}\cdot n^{O(1)}$ whether a strongly connected digraph on $n$ vertices has an out-branching with at least $k$ leaves. \end{itemize} All improvements use properties of extremal structures obtained after applying local search and of some out-branching decompositions.

Parameterized Algorithms for Directed Maximum Leaf Problems

We prove that finding a rooted subtree with at least $k$ leaves in a digraph is a fixed parameter tractable problem. A similar result holds for finding rooted spanning trees with many leaves in digraphs from a wide family $\cal L$ that includes all strong and acyclic digraphs. This settles completely an open question of Fellows and solves another one for digraphs in $\cal L$. Our algorithms are based on the following combinatorial result which can be viewed as a generalization of many results for a `spanning tree with many leaves' in the undirected case, and which is interesting on its own: If a digraph $D\in \cal L$ of order $n$ with minimum in-degree at least 3 contains a rooted spanning tree, then $D$ contains one with at least $(n/2)^{1/5}-1$ leaves.

Hamilton Cycles in Digraphs of Unitary Matrices

A set $S\subseteq V$ is called an {\em $q^+$-set} ({\em $q^-$-set}, respectively) if $S$ has at least two vertices and, for every $u\in S$, there exists $v\in S, v\neq u$ such that $N^+(u)\cap N^+(v)\neq \emptyset$ ($N^-(u)\cap N^-(v)\neq \emptyset$, respectively). A digraph $D$ is called {\em s-quadrangular} if, for every $q^+$-set $S$, we have $|\cup \{N^+(u)\cap N^+(v): u\neq v, u,v\in S\}|\ge |S|$ and, for every $q^-$-set $S$, we have $|\cup \{N^-(u)\cap N^-(v): u,v\in S)\}\ge |S|$. We conjecture that every strong s-quadrangular digraph has a Hamilton cycle and provide some support for this conjecture.

Fixed-Parameter Complexity of Minimum Profile Problems

Let $G=(V,E)$ be a graph. An ordering of $G$ is a bijection $α: V\dom \{1,2,..., |V|\}.$ For a vertex $v$ in $G$, its closed neighborhood is $N[v]=\{u\in V: uv\in E\}\cup \{v\}.$ The profile of an ordering $α$ of $G$ is $\prf_α(G)=\sum_{v\in V}(α(v)-\min\{α(u): u\in N[v]\}).$ The profile $\prf(G)$ of $G$ is the minimum of $\prf_α(G)$ over all orderings $α$ of $G$. It is well-known that $\prf(G)$ is the minimum number of edges in an interval graph $H$ that contains $G$ is a subgraph. Since $|V|-1$ is a tight lower bound for the profile of connected graphs $G=(V,E)$, the parametrization above the guaranteed value $|V|-1$ is of particular interest. We show that deciding whether the profile of a connected graph $G=(V,E)$ is at most $|V|-1+k$ is fixed-parameter tractable with respect to the parameter $k$. We achieve this result by reduction to a problem kernel of linear size.

Mediated Digraphs and Quantum Nonlocality

A digraph D=(V,A) is mediated if, for each pair x,y of distinct vertices of D, either xy belongs to A or yx belongs to A or there is a vertex z such that both xz,yz belong to A. For a digraph D, DELTA(D) is the maximum in-degree of a vertex in D. The "nth mediation number" mu(n) is the minimum of DELTA(D) over all mediated digraphs on n vertices. Mediated digraphs and mu(n) are of interest in the study of quantum nonlocality. We obtain a lower bound f(n) for mu(n) and determine infinite sequences of values of n for which mu(n)=f(n) and mu(n)>f(n), respectively. We derive upper bounds for mu(n) and prove that mu(n)=f(n)(1+o(1)). We conjecture that there is a constant c such that mu(n)=<f(n)+c. Methods and results of graph theory, design theory and number theory are used.
