Single Vanadium Dioxide Nanoparticle-Enabled Plasmonic switch with Thermal and Electronic Reconfigurability

We present an integrated switch that combines plasmonic and neuromorphic technologies with a single sub-stoichiometric VO2-x nanoparticle. The presented device acts as a versatile plasmonic switch with dual thermal and electrical reconfigurability leveraging the near-room temperature phase transition of the VO2-x nanoparticles combined with the rapid phase recovery to drive the device. The change in both the optical and electrical properties of the VO2-x nanoparticle enables simultaneous optical and electrical readouts making the plasmonic device suitable as a phase change memory cell which is crucial in the convergence of computing and communication technologies. Our demonstration of reversible electrical switching, evidenced by a 6dB modulation depth and concurrent optical and electrical outputs, signifies a major stride in merging electronic and photonic functionalities within phase-change material devices. This novel strategy not only harmonizes optical communication with electronic computing but also advances the development of sophisticated integrated neuromorphic devices.

Flexible-AR display for near-eye operations

We propose a new technique to fabricate flexible-near-field Argument-Reality (AR) display using modular-molds. A near-eye flexible-AR-display is fabricated based on parameters extracted from simulations. Our AR-display successfully reconstructed images and videos from a light-engine. It opens a new approach to fabricate flexible-near-field AR display with good physical stress and collision-resilience.

Design and Fabrication of a Low-cost Liquid Optical Waveguide for Augmented Reality

The complexities of fabrication techniques and the demand for high precision have posed significant challenges in the mass production of augmented reality (AR) waveguide combiners. Leveraging the capabilities of Polyjet 3D printing techniques, we have developed a cost-effective method for fabricating liquid geometric waveguide combiners for AR applications, using silicone oil as the medium. During the design phase, we optimized the structure of the waveguide combiner to facilitate easier fabrication. Our proposed method simplifies the production process by removing the need for complicated steps like dicing, layer bonding, and polishing, which are usually involved in traditional manufacturing techniques. We conducted optical simulations and developed a prototype using our patented fabrication method, which successfully demonstrated the integration of virtual images with the real-world environment, thereby confirming its feasibility and potential for cost-effective mass production.

3D Printed Waveguide for Augmented Reality

Mass production of augmented reality (AR) waveguides has been challenging due to the intricate nature of the fabrication technique and the high precision required for its optical characteristics. In this paper, we have presented a novel and low-cost approach for fabricating geometric optical waveguides designed for AR applications utilizing 3D printing techniques. To strike a balance between optical performance and fabrication feasibility, we have optimized the conventional geometric waveguide design to facilitate easier fabrication. It is worth noting that our proposed method does not require molding, dicing, and post-surface polishing after printing. A prototype based on this method has been successfully fabricated, showing the immersion between the virtual image and the real-world scene. The proposed method has great potential for adaptation to mass production in various AR applications.

Electro-optic modulator based on Vanadium dioxide epsilon-near-zero vertical nanowire triple-cavity in Silicon Waveguide

We present an electro-optic modulator exploiting an array of Vanadium dioxide nanorods operating in the epsilon near regime as the active switching material integrated in a silicon waveguide. The modulator takes advantage of the insulator-to-metal transition of Vanadium dioxide to achieve a robust modulation depth of 19.7 dB/micron with a broad wavelength of operation. Using simulations, we demonstrate how the effective permittivity of the metamaterial can be tuned to a near-zero value by varying the nanorod geometry. The paper also proposes a novel hexagonal array design which achieves low insertion losses while retaining a strong modulation depth. The results provide insight into the design of ultra-compact modulators with high operation frequencies and low insertion losses.

Design of on-chip plasmonic modulator with vanadium-dioxide in hybrid orthogonal junctions on Silicon-on-Insulator

We present a plasmonic modulator based on hybrid orthogonal silver junctions using vanadium dioxide as the modulating material on the silicon on insulator. The modulator has an ultra-compact footprint of 1.8μm x 1μm with a 100nm x 100nm modulating section based on the orthogonal geometry. We take advantage of large change in the refractive index of vanadium dioxide during its phase transition to achieve a high modulation depth of 46.89dB/μm. We also provide a fabrication strategy for the development of this device. The device geometry has potential applications in the development of next generation high frequency photonic modulators for optical communications which require a nanometer scale footprint, large modulation depth and small insertion losses.
