Effective gravitational couplings of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories

The low energy effective couplings of a four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theory to topological invariants of the background gravitational field are described by two functions $A$ and $B$. These two functions play an important role in the study of topologically twisted four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories and in the computation of central charges of $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal theories. In this paper, we compute $A$ and $B$ from the partition function in the $Ω$-background for $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ gauge theories. Our results not only confirm the predicted expressions of the effective gravitational couplings, but also give the previously undetermined overall multiplicative factors. We also analyze $A$ and $B$ for the $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ super-Yang-Mills theory, and confirm all the previous predictions.

Moonshine, Superconformal Symmetry, and Quantum Error Correction

Special conformal field theories can have symmetry groups which are interesting sporadic finite simple groups. Famous examples include the Monster symmetry group of a $c=24$ two-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) constructed by Frenkel, Lepowsky and Meurman, and the Conway symmetry group of a $c=12$ CFT explored in detail by Duncan and Mack-Crane. The Mathieu moonshine connection between the K3 elliptic genus and the Mathieu group $M_{24}$ has led to the study of K3 sigma models with large symmetry groups. A particular K3 CFT with a maximal symmetry group preserving $(4,4)$ superconformal symmetry was studied in beautiful work by Gaberdiel, Taormina, Volpato, and Wendland. The present paper shows that in both the GTVW and $c=12$ theories the construction of superconformal generators can be understood via the theory of quantum error correcting codes. The automorphism groups of these codes lift to symmetry groups in the CFT preserving the superconformal generators. In the case of the $N=1$ supercurrent of the GTVW model our result, combined with a result of T. Johnson-Freyd implies the symmetry group is the maximal subgroup of $M_{24}$ known as the sextet group. (The sextet group is also known as the holomorph of the hexacode.) Building on \cite{gtvw} the Ramond-Ramond sector of the GTVW model is related to the Miracle Octad Generator which in turn leads to a role for the Golay code as a group of symmetries of RR states. Moreover, $(4,1)$ superconformal symmetry suffices to define and decompose the elliptic genus of a K3 sigma model into characters of the $N=4$ superconformal algebra. The symmetry group preserving $(4,1)$ is larger than that preserving $(4,4)$.

Mocking the u-plane integral

The u-plane integral is the contribution of the Coulomb branch to correlation functions of N=2 gauge theory on a compact four-manifold. We consider the u-plane integral for correlators of point and surface observables of topologically twisted theories with gauge group SU(2), for an arbitrary four-manifold with (b1,b2+)=(0,1). The u-plane contribution equals the full correlator in the absence of Seiberg-Witten contributions at strong coupling, and coincides with the mathematically defined Donaldson invariants in such cases. We demonstrate that the u-plane correlators are efficiently determined using mock modular forms for point observables, and Appell-Lerch sums for surface observables. We use these results to discuss the asymptotic behavior of correlators as function of the number of observables. Our findings suggest that the vev of exponentiated point and surface observables is an entire function of the fugacities.

Flux vacua: A voluminous recount

In this note we apply mathematical results for the volume of certain symmetric spaces to the problem of counting flux vacua in simple IIB Calabi--Yau compactifications. In particular we obtain estimates for the number of flux vacua including the geometric factor related to the Calabi-Yau moduli space, in the large flux limit, for the FHSV model and some closely related models. We see that these geometric factors give rise to contributions to the counting formula that are typically not of order one and might potentially affect the counting qualitatively in some cases. We also note, for simple families of Calabi-Yau moduli spaces, an interesting dependence of the moduli space volumes on the dimension of the flux space, which in turn is governed by the Betti numbers of the Calabi-Yaus.

Index-Like Theorems from Line Defect Vevs

In this paper we investigate the relation between complexified Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates and spectral network coordinates on Seiberg-Witten moduli space. The main technique is the comparison of exact expressions for the expectation value of 't Hooft defects in certain 4D $SU(2)$ $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauge theories. We derive an index-like theorem for a class of Dirac operators on singular monopole moduli spaces. Our expression determines the indices of Dirac operators on singular monopole moduli spaces in terms of characteristic numbers for vector bundles over certain Kronheimer-Nakajima quiver varieties.

Wall Crossing from Dirac Zeromodes

We explore the physics of two-body decay of BPS states using semiclassical analysis to construct explicit solutions that illustrate the main features of wall crossing, for both ordinary and framed BPS states. In particular we recover the primitive wall-crossing formula from an asymptotic analysis of certain Dirac-type operators on monopole moduli spaces. Along the way we give an asymptotic metric for the moduli space of singular monopoles, analogous to the Gibbons-Manton and Lee-Weinberg-Yi metrics for the moduli space of smooth monopoles, and we find evidence for the existence of stable non-BPS boundstates. Our discussion applies to four-dimensional N = 2 super-Yang-Mills theories with general gauge group and general 't Hooft defects.

Remarks on the Green-Schwarz terms of six-dimensional supergravity theories

We construct the Green-Schwarz terms of six-dimensional supergravity theories on spacetimes with non-trivial topology and gauge bundle. We prove the cancellation of all global gauge and gravitational anomalies for theories with gauge groups given by products of $U(n)$, $SU(n)$ and $Sp(n)$ factors, as well as for $E_8$. For other gauge groups, anomaly cancellation is equivalent to the triviality of a certain 7-dimensional spin topological field theory. We show in the case of a finite Abelian gauge group that there are residual global anomalies imposing constraints on the 6d supergravity. These constraints are compatible with the known F-theory models. Interestingly, our construction requires that the gravitational anomaly coefficient of the 6d supergravity theory is a characteristic element of the lattice of string charges, a fact true in six-dimensional F-theory compactifications but that until now was lacking a low-energy explanation. We also discover a new anomaly coefficient associated with a torsion characteristic class in theories with a disconnected gauge group.

't Hooft Defects and Wall Crossing in SQM

In this paper we study the contribution of monopole bubbling to the expectation value of supersymmetric 't Hooft defects in Lagrangian theories of class $\mathcal{S}$ on $\mathbb{R}^3\times S^1$. This can be understood as the Witten index of an SQM living on the world volume of the 't Hooft defect that couples to the bulk 4D theory. The computation of this Witten index has many subtleties originating from a continuous spectrum of scattering states along the non-compact vacuum branches. We find that even after properly dealing with the spectral asymmetry, the standard localization result for the 't Hooft defect does not agree with the result obtained from the AGT correspondence. In this paper we will explicitly show that one must correct the localization result by adding an extra term to the standard Jeffrey-Kirwan residue formula. This extra term accounts for the contribution of ground states localized along the non-compact branches. This extra term restores both the expected symmetry properties of the line defect expectation value and reproduces the results derived using the AGT correspondence.

An Uplifting Discussion of T-Duality

It is well known that string theory has a T-duality symmetry relating circle compactifications of large and small radius. This symmetry plays a foundational role in string theory. We note here that while T-duality is order two acting on the moduli space of compactifications, it is order four in its action on the conformal field theory state space. More generally, involutions in the Weyl group $W(G)$ which act at points of enhanced $G$ symmetry have canonical lifts to order four elements of $G$, a phenomenon first investigated by J. Tits in the mathematical literature on Lie groups and generalized here to conformal field theory. This simple fact has a number of interesting consequences. One consequence is a reevaluation of a mod two condition appearing in asymmetric orbifold constructions. We also briefly discuss the implications for the idea that T-duality and its generalizations should be thought of as discrete gauge symmetries in spacetime.

Quantization of anomaly coefficients in 6D $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ supergravity

We obtain new constraints on the anomaly coefficients of 6D $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ supergravity theories using local and global anomaly cancellation conditions. We show how these constraints can be strengthened if we assume that the theory is well-defined on any spin space-time with an arbitrary gauge bundle. We distinguish the constraints depending on the gauge algebra only from those depending on the global structure of the gauge group. Our main constraint states that the coefficients of the anomaly polynomial for the gauge group $G$ should be an element of $2 H^4(BG;\mathbb{Z}) \otimes Λ_S$ where $Λ_S$ is the unimodular string charge lattice. We show that the constraints in their strongest form are realized in F-theory compactifications. In the process, we identify the cocharacter lattice, which determines the global structure of the gauge group, within the homology lattice of the compactification manifold.

On 't Hooft Defects, Monopole Bubbling and Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics

We revisit the localization computation of the expectation values of 't Hooft operators in $\mathcal{N}=2^*$ SU(N) theory on $\mathbb{R}^3 \times S^1$. We show that the part of the answer arising from "monopole bubbling" on $\mathbb{R}^3$ can be understood as an equivariant integral over a Kronheimer-Nakajima moduli space of instantons on an orbifold of $\mathbb{C}^2$. It can also be described as a Witten index of a certain supersymmetric quiver quantum mechanics with $\mathcal{N}=(4,4)$ supersymmetry. The map between the defect data and the quiver quantum mechanics is worked out for all values of N. For the SU(2) theory, we compute several examples of these line defect expectation values using the Witten index formula and confirm that the expressions agree with the formula derived by Okuda, Ito and Taki. In addition, we present a Type IIB construction -- involving D1-D3-NS5-branes -- for monopole bubbling in $\mathcal{N}=2^*$ SU(N) SYM and demonstrate how the quiver quantum mechanics arises in this brane picture.

Conway Subgroup Symmetric Compactifications Of Heterotic String

We investigate special compactifications of the heterotic string for which the space of half-BPS states is, in a natural way, a representation of various subgroups of the Conway group. These compactifications provide a useful framework for analyzing the action of some of the large symmetry groups appearing in discussions of Moonshine in the physics literature. We investigate toroidal compactifications of heterotic string with sixteen supersymmetries as well as asymmetric toroidal orbifolds with $N=2$ supersymmetry in four dimensions that arise as $K3 \times T^2$ compactifications. The latter Conway subgroup symmetric compactifications of the heterotic string might have some interesting implications for D-brane bound states on Calabi-Yau manifolds.

The Partition Function Of Argyres-Douglas Theory On A Four-Manifold

Using the $u$-plane integral as a tool, we derive a formula for the partition function of the simplest nontrivial (topologically twisted) Argyres-Douglas theory on compact, oriented, simply connected, four-manifolds without boundary and with $b_2^+>0$. The result can be expressed in terms of classical cohomological invariants and Seiberg-Witten invariants. Our results hint at the existence of standard four-manifolds that are not of Seiberg-Witten simple type.

A Comment On Berry Connections

When families of quantum systems are equipped with a continuous family of Hamiltonians such that there is a gap in the common spectrum one can define a notion of a Berry connection. In this note we stress that, in general, since the Hilbert bundle defining the family of quantum systems does not come with a canonical trivialization there is in fact not a single Berry connection but rather a family of Berry connections. Two examples illustrate that this remark can have physical consequences.

Quantum Mechanics With Noncommutative Amplitudes

We formulate a Born rule for families of quantum systems parametrized by a noncommutative space of control parameters. The resulting formalism may be viewed as a generalization of quantum mechanics where overlaps take values in a noncommutative algebra, rather than in the complex numbers.

A Note On The Semiclassical Formulation Of BPS States In Four-Dimensional N=2 Theories

Vector spaces of (framed) BPS states of Lagrangian four-dimensional N=2 field theories can be defined in semiclassical chambers in terms of the $L^2$-cohomology of Dirac-like operators on monopole moduli spaces. This was spelled out previously for theories with only vectormultiplets, taking into account only a subset of the possible half-supersymmetric 't Hooft-Wilson line defects. This note completes the discussion by describing the modifications needed when including matter hypermultiplets together with arbitrary 't Hooft-Wilson line defects. Two applications of this extended discussion are given.

Comments On The Two-Dimensional Landau-Ginzburg Approach To Link Homology

We describe rules for computing a homology theory of knots and links in $\mathbb{R}^3$. It is derived from the theory of framed BPS states bound to domain walls separating two-dimensional Landau-Ginzburg models with (2,2) supersymmetry. We illustrate the rules with some sample computations, obtaining results consistent with Khovanov homology. We show that of the two Landau-Ginzburg models discussed in this context by Gaiotto and Witten one, (the so-called Yang-Yang-Landau-Ginzburg model) does not lead to topological invariants of links while the other, based on a model with target space equal to the universal cover of the moduli space of $SU(2)$ magnetic monopoles, will indeed produce a topologically invariant theory of knots and links.
