On 6d N=(2,0) theory compactified on a Riemann surface with finite area

We study 6d N=(2,0) theory of type SU(N) compactified on Riemann surfaces with finite area, including spheres with fewer than three punctures. The Higgs branch, whose metric is inversely proportional to the total area of the Riemann surface, is discussed in detail. We show that the zero-area limit, which gives us a genuine 4d theory, can involve a Wigner-Inonu contraction of global symmetries of the six-dimensional theory. We show how this explains why subgroups of SU(N) can appear as the gauge group in the 4d limit. As a by-product we suggest that half-BPS codimension-two defects in the six-dimensional (2,0) theory have an operator product expansion whose operator product coefficients are four-dimensional field theories.

Wall-crossing, Hitchin Systems, and the WKB Approximation

We consider BPS states in a large class of d=4, N=2 field theories, obtained by reducing six-dimensional (2,0) superconformal field theories on Riemann surfaces, with defect operators inserted at points of the Riemann surface. Further dimensional reduction on S^1 yields sigma models, whose target spaces are moduli spaces of Higgs bundles on Riemann surfaces with ramification. In the case where the Higgs bundles have rank 2, we construct canonical Darboux coordinate systems on their moduli spaces. These coordinate systems are related to one another by Poisson transformations associated to BPS states, and have well-controlled asymptotic behavior, obtained from the WKB approximation. The existence of these coordinates implies the Kontsevich-Soibelman wall-crossing formula for the BPS spectrum. This construction provides a concrete realization of a general physical explanation of the wall-crossing formula which was proposed in 0807.4723. It also yields a new method for computing the spectrum using the combinatorics of triangulations of the Riemann surface.

On 2d TQFTs whose values are holomorphic symplectic varieties

For simple and simply-connected complex algebraic group G, we conjecture the existence of a functor eta_G from the category of 2-bordisms to the category of holomorphic symplectic varieties with Hamiltonian action, such that gluing of boundaries corresponds to the holomorphic symplectic quotient with respect to the diagonal action of G. We describe various properties of eta_G obtained via string-theoretic analysis. Mathematicians are urged to construct eta_G rigorously.

Wall-Crossing in Coupled 2d-4d Systems

We introduce a new wall-crossing formula which combines and generalizes the Cecotti-Vafa and Kontsevich-Soibelman formulas for supersymmetric 2d and 4d systems respectively. This 2d-4d wall-crossing formula governs the wall-crossing of BPS states in an N=2 supersymmetric 4d gauge theory coupled to a supersymmetric surface defect. When the theory and defect are compactified on a circle, we get a 3d theory with a supersymmetric line operator, corresponding to a hyperholomorphic connection on a vector bundle over a hyperkahler space. The 2d-4d wall-crossing formula can be interpreted as a smoothness condition for this hyperholomorphic connection. We explain how the 2d-4d BPS spectrum can be determined for 4d theories of class S, that is, for those theories obtained by compactifying the six-dimensional (0,2) theory with a partial topological twist on a punctured Riemann surface C. For such theories there are canonical surface defects. We illustrate with several examples in the case of A_1 theories of class S. Finally, we indicate how our results can be used to produce solutions to the A_1 Hitchin equations on the Riemann surface C.

A Shifted View of Fundamental Physics

We speculate on the role of relativistic versions of delayed differential equations in fundamental physics. Relativistic invariance implies that we must consider both advanced and retarded terms in the equations, so we refer to them as shifted equations. The shifted Dirac equation has some novel properties. A tentative formulation of shifted Einstein-Maxwell equations naturally incorporates a small but nonzero cosmological constant.

Bound state transformation walls

In four dimensional N=2 supergravity theories, BPS bound states near marginal stability are described by configurations of widely separated constituents with nearly parallel central charges. When the vacuum moduli can be dialed adiabatically until the central charges become anti -parallel, a paradox arises. We show that this paradox is always resolved by the existence of "bound state transformation walls" across which the nature of the bound state changes, although the index does not jump. We find that there are two distinct phenomena that can take place on these walls, which we call recombination and conjugation. The latter is associated to the presence of singularities at finite distance in moduli space. Consistency of conjugation and wall-crossing rules near these singularities leads to new constraints on the BPS spectrum. Singular loci supporting massless vector bosons are particularly subtle in this respect. We argue that the spectrum at such loci necessarily contains massless magnetic monopoles, and that bound states around them transform by intricate hybrids of conjugation and recombination.

Orientifold Precis

We give a precise and concise formulation of the orientifold construction in Type II superstring theory. Our results include anomaly cancellation on the worldsheet and a spacetime computation of the background Ramond-Ramond charge.

Wall-crossing from supersymmetric galaxies

We give an elementary physical derivation of the Kontsevich-Soibelman wall crossing formula, valid for any theory with a 4d N=2 supergravity description. Our argument leads to a slight generalization of the formula, which relates monodromy to the BPS spectrum.

Spin structures and superstrings

In superstring theory spin structures are present on both the 2-dimensional worldsheet and 10-dimensional spacetime. We present a new proposal for the B-field in superstring theory and demonstrate its interaction with worldsheet spin structures. Our formulation generalizes to orientifolds, where various twistings appear. A special case of the orientifold worldsheet B-field amplitude is a KO-theoretic construction of the Z/8Z-valued Kervaire invariant on pin-minus surfaces.

A Modern Fareytail

We revisit the "fareytail expansions" of elliptic genera which have been used in discussions of the AdS_3/CFT_2 correspondence and the OSV conjecture. We show how to write such expansions without the use of the problematic "fareytail transform." In particular, we show how to write a general vector-valued modular form of non-positive weight as a convergent sum over cosets of SL(2,Z). This sum suggests a new regularization of the gravity path integral in AdS_3, resolves the puzzles associated with the "fareytail transform," and leads to several new insights. We discuss constraints on the polar coefficients of negative weight modular forms arising from modular invariance, showing how these are related to Fourier coefficients of positive weight cusp forms. In addition, we discuss the appearance of holomorphic anomalies in the context of the fareytail.

Four-dimensional wall-crossing via three-dimensional field theory

We give a physical explanation of the Kontsevich-Soibelman wall-crossing formula for the BPS spectrum in Seiberg-Witten theories. In the process we give an exact description of the BPS instanton corrections to the hyperkahler metric of the moduli space of the theory on R^3 x S^1. The wall-crossing formula reduces to the statement that this metric is continuous. Our construction of the metric uses a four-dimensional analogue of the two-dimensional tt* equations.

Extremal N=(2,2) 2D Conformal Field Theories and Constraints of Modularity

We explore the constraints on the spectrum of primary fields implied by modularity of the elliptic genus of N=(2,2) 2D CFT's. We show that such constraints have nontrivial implications for the existence of "extremal" N=(2,2) conformal field theories. Applications to AdS3 supergravity and flux compactifications are addressed.

Wall crossing in local Calabi Yau manifolds

We study the BPS states of a D6-brane wrapping the conifold and bound to collections of D2 and D0 branes. We find that in addition to the complexified Kahler parameter of the rigid sphere it is necessary to introduce an extra real parameter to describe BPS partition functions and marginal stability walls. The supergravity approach to BPS state-counting gives a simple derivation of results of Szendroi concerning Donaldson-Thomas theory on the noncommutative conifold. This example also illustrates some interesting limitations on the supergravity approach to BPS state-counting and wall-crossing.

Ample D4-D2-D0 Decay

We study the wall-crossing behavior of the index of BPS states for D4-D2-D0 brane systems on a Calabi-Yau 3-fold at large radius and point out that not only is the ``BPS index at large radius'' chamber-dependent, but that the changes in the index can be large in the sense that they dominate single-centered black hole entropy. We discuss implications for the weak coupling OSV conjecture. We also analyze the near horizon limit of multicentered solutions, introduced in arXiv:0802.2257, for these particular configurations and comment on a general criterion, conjectured in arXiv:0802.2257, which identifies those multicentered solutions whose near horizon limit corresponds to a geometry with a single asymptotic AdS_3 x S^2 boundary.

Les Houches Lectures on Strings and Arithmetic

These are lecture notes for two lectures delivered at the Les Houches workshop on Number Theory, Physics, and Geometry, March 2003. They review two examples of interesting interactions between number theory and string compactification, and raise some new questions and issues in the context of those examples. The first example concerns the role of the Rademacher expansion of coefficients of modular forms in the AdS/CFT correspondence. The second example concerns the role of the ``attractor mechanism'' of supergravity in selecting certain arithmetic Calabi-Yau's as distinguished compactifications.

Crossing the Wall: Branes vs. Bundles

We test a recently proposed wall-crossing formula for the change of the Hilbert space of BPS states in d=4,N=2 theories. We study decays of D4D2D0 systems into pairs of D4D2D0 systems and we show how the wall-crossing formula reproduces results of Goettsche and Yoshioka on wall-crossing behavior of the moduli of slope-stable holomorphic bundles over holomorphic surfaces. Our comparison shows very clearly that the moduli space of the D4D2D0 system on a rigid surface in a Calabi-Yau is not the same as the moduli space of torsion free sheaves, even when worldhseet instantons are neglected. Moreover, we argue that the physical formula should make some new mathematical predictions for a future theory of the moduli of stable objects in the derived category.

Split States, Entropy Enigmas, Holes and Halos

We investigate degeneracies of BPS states of D-branes on compact Calabi-Yau manifolds. We develop a factorization formula for BPS indices using attractor flow trees associated to multicentered black hole bound states. This enables us to study background dependence of the BPS spectrum, to compute explicitly exact indices of various nontrivial D-brane systems, and to clarify the subtle relation of Donaldson-Thomas invariants to BPS indices of stable D6-D2-D0 states, realized in supergravity as "hole halos". We introduce a convergent generating function for D4 indices in the large CY volume limit, and prove it can be written as a modular average of its polar part, generalizing the fareytail expansion of the elliptic genus. We show polar states are "split" D6-anti-D6 bound states, and that the partition function factorizes accordingly, leading to a refined version of the OSV conjecture. This differs from the original conjecture in several aspects. In particular we obtain a nontrivial measure factor g_{top}^{-2} e^{-K} and find factorization requires a cutoff. We show that the main factor determining the cutoff and therefore the error is the existence of "swing states" -- D6 states which exist at large radius but do not form stable D6-anti-D6 bound states. We point out a likely breakdown of the OSV conjecture at small g_{top} (in the large background CY volume limit), due to the surprising phenomenon that for sufficiently large background Kahler moduli, a charge N Q supporting single centered black holes of entropy ~ N^2 S(Q) also admits two-centered BPS black hole realizations whose entropy grows like N^3 at large N.
