Controlled regularity at future null infinity from past asymptotic initial data: the wave equation

We study the relationship between asymptotic characteristic initial data for the wave equation at past null infinity and the regularity of the solution at future null infinity on the Minkowski spacetime. By constructing estimates on a causal rectangle reaching the conformal boundary, we prove that the solution admits an asymptotic expansion near null and spatial infinity whose regularity is controlled quantitatively in terms of the regularity of the data at past null infinity. In particular, our method gives rise to solutions to the wave equation in a neighbourhood of spatial infinity satisfying the peeling behaviour, for data on past null infinity with non-compact support. Our approach makes use of Friedrich's conformal representation of spatial infinity in which we prove delicate non-degenerate Grönwall estimates. We describe the relationship between the solution and the data both in terms of Friedrich's conformal coordinates and the usual physical coordinates on Minkowski space.

Global finite energy solutions of the Maxwell-scalar field system on the Einstein cylinder

We prove the existence and uniqueness of global finite energy solutions of the Maxwell-scalar field system in Lorenz gauge on the Einstein cylinder. Our method is a combination of a conformal patching argument, the finite energy existence theorem in Lorenz gauge on Minkowski space of Selberg and Tesfahun, a careful localization of finite energy data, and null form estimates of Foschi-Klainerman type. Although we prove that the energy-carrying components of the solution maintain regularity, due to the incompleteness of the null structure in Lorenz gauge and the nature of our foliation-change arguments we find small losses of regularity in both the scalar field and the potential.

Conformal scattering of the Maxwell-scalar field system on de Sitter space

We prove small data energy estimates of all orders of differentiability between past null infinity and future null infinity of de Sitter space for the conformally invariant Maxwell-scalar field system. This allows us to construct bounded and invertible, but nonlinear, scattering operators taking past asymptotic data to future asymptotic data. We also deduce exponential decay rates for solutions with data having at least two derivatives, and for more regular solutions discover an asymptotic decoupling of the scalar field from the charge. The construction involves a carefully chosen complete gauge fixing condition which allows us to control all components of the Maxwell potential, and a nonlinear Grönwall inequality for higher order estimates.

Wave map null form estimates via Peter-Weyl theory

We study spacetime estimates for the wave map null form $Q_0$ on $\mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{S}^3$. By using the Lie group structure of $\mathbb{S}^3$ and Peter-Weyl theory, combined with the time-periodicity of the conformal wave equation on $\mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{S}^3$, we extend the classical ideas of Klainerman and Machedon to estimates on $\mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{S}^3$, allowing for a range of powers of natural (Laplacian and wave) Fourier multiplier operators. A key difference in these curved space estimates as compared to the flat case is a loss of an arbitrarily small amount of differentiability, attributable to a lack of dispersion of linear waves on $\mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{S}^3$. This arises in Fourier space from the product structure of irreducible representations of $\mathrm{SU}(2)$. We further show that our estimates imply weighted estimates for the null form on Minkowski space.

One-dimensional Carrollian fluids I: Carroll-Galilei duality

Galilean and Carrollian algebras acting on two-dimensional Newton-Cartan and Carrollian manifolds are isomorphic. A consequence of this property is a duality correspondence between one-dimensional Galilean and Carrollian fluids. We describe the dynamics of these systems as they emerge from the relevant limits of Lorentzian hydrodynamics, and explore the advertised duality relationship. This interchanges longitudinal and transverse directions with respect to the flow velocity, and permutes equilibrium and out-of-equilibrium observables, unveiling specific features of Carrollian physics. We investigate the action of local hydrodynamic-frame transformations in the Galilean and Carrollian configurations, i.e. dual Galilean and Carrollian local boosts, and comment on their potential breaking. Emphasis is laid on the additional geometric elements that are necessary to attain complete systems of hydrodynamic equations in Newton-Cartan and Carroll spacetimes. Our analysis is conducted in general Cartan frames as well as in more explicit coordinates, specifically suited to Galilean or Carrollian use.

One-Dimensional Carrollian Fluids III: Global Existence and Weak Continuity in $L^\infty$

The Carrollian fluid equations arise as the $c \to 0$ limit of the relativistic fluid equations and have recently experienced a surge of activity in the flat-space holography community. However, the rigorous mathematical well-posedness theory for these equations does not appear to have been previously studied. This paper is the third in a series in which we initiate the systematic analysis of the Carrollian fluid equations. In the present work we prove the global-in-time existence of bounded entropy solutions to the isentropic Carrollian fluid equations in one spatial dimension for a particular constitutive law ($γ= 3$). Our method is to use a vanishing viscosity approximation for which we establish a compensated compactness framework. Using this framework we also prove the compactness of entropy solutions in $L^\infty$, and establish a kinetic formulation of the problem. This global existence result in $L^\infty$ extends the $C^1$ theory presented in our companion paper ``One-Dimensional Carrollian Fluids II: $C^1$ Blow-up Criteria''.

One-dimensional Carrollian fluids II: $C^1$ blow-up criteria

The Carrollian fluid equations arise from the equations for relativistic fluids in the limit as the speed of light vanishes, and have recently experienced a surge of interest in the theoretical physics community in the context of asymptotic symmetries and flat-space holography. In this paper we initiate the rigorous systematic analysis of these equations by studying them in one space dimension in the $C^1$ setting. We begin by proposing a notion of isentropic Carrollian equations, and use this to reduce the Carrollian equations to a $2 \times 2$ system of conservation laws. Using the scheme of Lax, we then classify when $C^1$ solutions to the isentropic Carrollian equations exist globally, or blow up in finite time. Our analysis assumes a Carrollian analogue of a constitutive relation for the Carrollian energy density, with exponent in the range $γ\in (1,3]$.

Conformal Scattering of Maxwell Potentials

We construct a complete conformal scattering theory for finite energy Maxwell potentials on a class of curved, asymptotically flat spacetimes with prescribed smoothness of null infinity and a non-zero ADM mass. In order to define the full set of scattering data, we construct a Lorenz-like gauge which makes the field equations hyperbolic and non-singular up to null infinity, and reduces to an intrinsically solvable ODE on null infinity. We develop a method to solve the characteristic Cauchy problem from this scattering data based on a theorem of Hörmander. In the case of Minkowski space, we further investigate an alternative formulation of the scattering theory by using the Morawetz vector field instead of the usual timelike Killing vector field.

Controlled regularity at future null infinity from past asymptotic initial data: massless fields

We study the relationship between asymptotic characteristic initial data at past null infinity and the regularity of solutions at future null infinity for the massless linear spin-s field equations on Minkowski space. By quantitatively controlling the solutions on a causal rectangle reaching the conformal boundary, we relate the (generically singular) behaviour of the solutions near past null infinity, future null infinity, and spatial infinity. Our analysis uses Friedrich's cylinder at spatial infinity together with a careful Grönwall-type estimate that does not degenerate at the intersection of null infinity and the cylinder (the so-called critical sets).

Large data decay of Yang-Mills-Higgs fields on Minkowski and de Sitter spacetimes

We extend Eardley and Moncrief's $L^\infty$ estimates for the conformally invariant Yang-Mills-Higgs equations to the Einstein cylinder. Our method is to first work on Minkowski space and localise their estimates, and then carry them to the Einstein cylinder by a conformal transformation. By patching local estimates together, we deduce global $L^\infty$ estimates on the cylinder, and extend Choquet-Bruhat and Christodoulou's small data well-posedness result to large data. Finally, by employing another conformal transformation, we deduce exponential decay rates for Yang-Mills-Higgs fields on de Sitter space, and inverse polynomial decay rates on Minkowski space.
