The scalar, vector, and tensor modes in gravitational wave turbulence simulations

We study the gravitational wave (GW) signal sourced by primordial turbulence that is assumed to be present at cosmological phase transitions like the electroweak and quantum chromodynamics phase transitions. We consider various models of primordial turbulence, such as those with and without helicity, purely hydrodynamical turbulence induced by fluid motions, and magnetohydrodynamic turbulence whose energy can be dominated either by kinetic or magnetic energy, depending on the nature of the turbulence. We also study circularly polarized GWs generated by parity violating sources such as helical turbulence. Our ultimate goal is to determine the efficiency of GW production through different classes of turbulence. We find that the GW energy and strain tend to be large for acoustic or irrotational turbulence, even though its tensor mode amplitude is relatively small at most wave numbers. Only at very small wave numbers is the spectral tensor mode significant, which might explain the efficient GW production in that case.

Circular Polarization of Gravitational Waves from Early-Universe Helical Turbulence

We perform direct numerical simulations to compute the net circular polarization of gravitational waves from helical (chiral) turbulent sources in the early Universe for a variety of initial conditions, including driven (stationary) and decaying turbulence. We investigate the resulting gravitational wave signal assuming different turbulent geneses such as magnetically or kinetically driven cases. Under realistic physical conditions in the early Universe we compute numerically the wave number-dependent polarization degree of the gravitational waves. We find that the spectral polarization degree strongly depends on the initial conditions. The peak of the spectral polarization degree occurs at twice the typical wavenumber of the source, as expected, and for fully helical decaying turbulence, it reaches its maximum of nearly 100\% {\it only} at the peak. We determine the temporal evolution of the turbulent sources as well as the resulting gravitational waves, showing that the dominant contribution to their spectral energy density happens shortly after the activation of the source. Only through an artificially prolonged decay of the turbulence can further increase of the gravitational wave amplitude be achieved. We estimate the detection prospects for the net polarization, arguing that its detection contains {\it clean} information (including the generation mechanisms, time, and strength) about the sources of possible parity violations in the early Universe.

Imbalanced magnetohydrodynamic turbulence modified by velocity shear in the solar wind

We study incompressible imbalanced magnetohydrodynamic turbulence in the presence of background velocity shears. Using scaling arguments, we show that the turbulent cascade is significantly accelerated when the background velocity shear is stronger than the velocity shears in the subdominant Alfv% én waves at the injection scale. The spectral transport is then controlled by the background shear rather than the turbulent shears and the Tchen spectrum with spectral index $-1$ is formed. This spectrum extends from the injection scale to the scale of the spectral break where the subdominant wave shear becomes equal to the background shear. The estimated spectral breaks and power spectra are in good agreement with those observed in the fast solar wind. The proposed mechanism can contribute to enhanced turbulent cascades and modified $-1$ spectra observed in the fast solar wind with strong velocity shears. This mechanism can also operate in many other astrophysical environments where turbulence develops on top of non-uniform plasma flows.

The Lagrangian frequency spectrum as a diagnostic for magnetohydrodynamic turbulence dynamics

For the phenomenological description of magnetohydrodynamic turbulence competing models exist, e.g. Boldyrev [Phys.Rev.Lett. \textbf{96}, 115002, 2006] and Gogoberidze [Phys.Plas. \textbf{14}, 022304, 2007], which predict the same Eulerian inertial-range scaling of the turbulent energy spectrum although they employ fundamentally different basic interaction mechanisms. {A relation is found that links} the Lagrangian frequency spectrum {with} the autocorrelation timescale of the turbulent fluctuations, $τ_\mathrm{ac}$, and the associated cascade timescale, $τ_{\mathrm{cas}}$. Thus, the Lagrangian energy spectrum can serve to identify weak ($τ_\mathrm{ac}\llτ_{\mathrm{cas}}$) and strong ($τ_\mathrm{ac}\simτ_{\mathrm{cas}}$) interaction mechanisms providing insight into the turbulent energy cascade. The new approach is illustrated by results from direct numerical simulations of two- and three-dimensional incompressible MHD turbulence.

Spectrum of infrasound radiation from supercell storms

We consider the generation of acoustic waves by turbulent convection and perform spectral analysis of a monopole source of sound related to the heat production by condensation of moisture. A quantitative explanation of the correlation between intensity of infrasound generated by supercell storms and later tornado formation is given. It is shown that low lifting condensation level (LCL) and high values of convective available potential energy (CAPE), which are known to favor significant tornadoes, also lead to a strong enhancement of supercell's low frequency acoustic radiation.

The Spectrum of Gravitational Radiation from Primordial Turbulence

Energy injection into the early universe can induce turbulent motions of the primordial plasma, which in turn act as a source for gravitational radiation. Earlier work computed the amplitude and characteristic frequency of the relic gravitational wave background, as a function of the total energy injected and the stirring scale of the turbulence. This paper computes the frequency spectrum of relic gravitational radiation from a turbulent source of the stationary Kolmogoroff form which acts for a given duration, making no other approximations. We also show that the limit of long source wavelengths, commonly employed in aeroacoustic problems, is an excellent approximation. The gravitational waves from cosmological turbulence around the electroweak energy scale will be detectable by future space-based laser interferometers for a substantial range of turbulence parameters.

Gravitational Radiation from Primordial Helical Inverse Cascade MHD Turbulence

We consider the generation of gravitational waves by primordial helical inverse cascade magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence produced by bubble collisions at the electroweak phase transition. We extend the previous study \cite{kgr08} by considering both currently discussed models of MHD turbulence. For popular electroweak phase transition parameter values, the generated gravitational wave spectrum is only weakly dependent on the MHD turbulence model. Compared to the unmagnetized electroweak phase transition case, the spectrum of MHD-turbulence-generated gravitational waves peaks at lower frequency with larger amplitude and can be detected by the proposed Laser Interferometer Space Antenna

Detectability of Gravitational Waves from Phase Transitions

Gravitational waves potentially represent our only direct probe of the universe when it was less than one second old. In particular, first-order phase transitions in the early universe can generate a stochastic background of gravitational waves which may be detectable today. We briefly summarize the physical sources of gravitational radiation from phase transitions and present semi-analytic expressions for the resulting gravitational wave spectra from three distinct realistic sources: bubble collisions, turbulent plasma motions, and inverse-cascade helical magnetohydrodynamic turbulence. Using phenomenological parameters to describe phase transition properties, we determine the region of parameter space for which gravitational waves can be detected by the proposed Laser Interferometer Space Antenna. The electroweak phase transition is detectable for a wide range of parameters.

Gravitational Radiation from Primordial Helical MHD Turbulence

We consider gravitational waves (GWs) generated by primordial inverse-cascade helical magneto-hydrodynamical (MHD) turbulence produced by bubble collisions at the electroweak phase transitions (EWPT). Compared to the unmagnetized EWPT case, the spectrum of MHD-turbulence-generated GWs peaks at lower frequency with larger amplitude and can be detected by the proposed Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA).

On over-reflection and generation of Gravito-Alfven waves in solar-type stars

The dynamics of linear perturbations is studied in magnetized plasma shear flows with a constant shearing rate and with gravity-induced stratification. The general set of linearized equations is derived and the two-dimensional case is considered in detail. The Boussinesq approximation is used in order to examine relatively small-scale perturbations of low-frequency modes: Gravito-Alfven waves (GAW) and Entropy Mode (EM) perturbations. It is shown that for flows with arbitrary shearing rate there exists a finite time interval of non-adiabatic evolution of the perturbations. The non-adiabatic behavior manifests itself in a twofold way, viz. by the over-reflection of the GAWs and by the generation of GAWs from EM perturbations. It is shown that these phenomena act as efficient transformers of the equilibrium flow energy into the energy of the perturbations for moderate and high shearing rate solar plasma flows. Efficient generation of GAW by EM takes place for shearing rates about an order of magnitude smaller than necessary for development of a shear instability. The latter fact could have important consequences for the problem of angular momentum redistribution within the Sun and solar-type stars.

Quantifying shear-induced wave transformations in the solar wind

The possibility of velocity shear-induced linear transformations of different magnetohydrodynamic waves in the solar wind is studied both analytically and numerically. A quantitative analysis of the wave transformation processes for all possible plasma-$β$ regimes is performed. By applying the obtained criteria for effective wave coupling to the solar wind parameters, we show that velocity shear-induced linear transformations of Alfvén waves into magneto-acoustic waves could effectively take place for the relatively low-frequency Alfvén waves in the energy containing interval. The obtained results are in a good qualitative agreement with the observed features of density perturbations in the solar wind.

Gamma Ray Burst Constraints on Ultraviolet Lorentz Invariance Violation

We present a unified general formalism for ultraviolet Lorentz invariance violation (LV) testing through electromagnetic wave propagation, based on both dispersion and rotation measure data. This allows for a direct comparison of the efficacy of different data to constrain LV. As an example we study the signature of LV on the rotation of the polarization plane of $γ$-rays from gamma ray bursts in a LV model. Here $γ$-ray polarization data can provide a strong constraint on LV, 13 orders of magnitude more restrictive than a potential constraint from the rotation of the cosmic microwave background polarization proposed by Gamboa, López-Sarrión, and Polychronakos (2006).

Scaling law of the plasma turbulence with non conservative fluxes

It is shown that in the presence of anisotropic kinetic dissipation existence of scale invariant power law spectrum of plasma turbulence is possible. Obtained scale invariant spectrum is not associated with the constant flux of any physical quantity. Application of the model to the high frequency part of the solar wind turbulence is discussed.

Polarized Cosmological Gravitational Waves from Primordial Helical Turbulence

We show that helical turbulence produced during a first-order phase transition generates circularly polarized cosmological gravitational waves (GWs). The characteristic frequency of these GWs for an extreme case of the phase transition model is around $10^{-3}$ --- $10^{-2}$ Hz with an energy density parameter as high as $10^{-12}$ --- $10^{-11}$. The possibility of detection is briefly discussed.

On linear coupling of acoustic and cyclotron waves in plasma flows

It is found that in magnetized electrostatic plasma flows the velocity shear couples ion-acoustic waves with ion-cyclotron waves and leads, under favorable conditions, to their efficient reciprocal transformations. It is shown that in a two-dimensional setup this coupling has a remarkable feature: it is governed by equations that are exactly similar to the ones describing coupling of sound waves with internal gravity waves [Rogava & Mahajan: Phys. Rev. E vol.55, 1185 (1997)] in neutral fluid flows. Using another noteworthy quantum mechanical analogy we calculate transformation coefficients and give fully analytic, quantitative description of the coupling efficiency for flows with low shearing rates.
