Laguerre and Meixner symmetric functions, and infinite-dimensional diffusion processes

The Laguerre symmetric functions introduced in the note are indexed by arbitrary partitions and depend on two continuous parameters. The top degree homogeneous component of every Laguerre symmetric function coincides with the Schur function with the same index. Thus, the Laguerre symmetric functions form a two-parameter family of inhomogeneous bases in the algebra of symmetric functions. These new symmetric functions are obtained from the N-variate symmetric polynomials of the same name by a procedure of analytic continuation. The Laguerre symmetric functions are eigenvectors of a second order differential operator, which depends on the same two parameters and serves as the infinitesimal generator of an infinite-dimensional diffusion process X(t). The process X(t) admits approximation by some jump processes related to one more new family of symmetric functions, the Meixner symmetric functions. In equilibrium, the process X(t) can be interpreted as a time-dependent point process on the punctured real line R\{0}, and the point configurations may be interpreted as doubly infinite collections of particles of two opposite charges with log-gas-type interaction. The dynamical correlation functions of the equilibrium process have determinantal form: they are given by minors of the so-called extended Whittaker kernel, introduced earlier in a paper by Borodin and the author.

Plancherel averages: Remarks on a paper by Stanley

Let M_n stand for the Plancherel measure on Y_n, the set of Young diagrams with n boxes. A recent result of Stanley (arXiv:0807.0383) says that for certain functions G defined on the set Y of all Young diagrams, the average of G with respect to M_n depends on n polynomially. We propose two other proofs of this result together with a generalization to the Jack deformation of the Plancherel measure.

The quasi-invariance property for the Gamma kernel determinantal measure

The Gamma kernel is a projection kernel of the form (A(x)B(y)-B(x)A(y))/(x-y), where A and B are certain functions on the one-dimensional lattice expressed through Euler's Gamma function. The Gamma kernel depends on two continuous parameters; its principal minors serve as the correlation functions of a determinantal probability measure P defined on the space of infinite point configurations on the lattice. As was shown earlier (Borodin and Olshanski, Advances in Math. 194 (2005), 141-202; arXiv:math-ph/0305043), P describes the asymptotics of certain ensembles of random partitions in a limit regime. Theorem: The determinantal measure P is quasi-invariant with respect to finitary permutations of the nodes of the lattice. This result is motivated by an application to a model of infinite particle stochastic dynamics.

Anisotropic Young diagrams and infinite-dimensional diffusion processes with the Jack parameter

We construct a family of Markov processes with continuous sample trajectories on an infinite-dimensional space, the Thoma simplex. The family depends on three continuous parameters, one of which, the Jack parameter, is similar to the beta parameter in random matrix theory. The processes arise in a scaling limit transition from certain finite Markov chains, the so called up-down chains on the Young graph with the Jack edge multiplicities. Each of the limit Markov processes is ergodic and its stationary distribution is a symmetrizing measure. The infinitesimal generators of the processes are explicitly computed; viewed as selfadjoint operators in the L^2 spaces over the symmetrizing measures, the generators have purely discrete spectrum which is explicitly described. For the special value 1 of the Jack parameter, the limit Markov processes coincide with those of the recent work by Borodin and the author (Prob. Theory Rel. Fields 144 (2009), 281--318; arXiv:0706.1034). In the limit as the Jack parameter goes to 0, our family of processes degenerates to the one-parameter family of diffusions on the Kingman simplex studied long ago by Ethier and Kurtz in connection with some models of population genetics. The techniques of the paper are essentially algebraic. The main computations are performed in the algebra of shifted symmetric functions with the Jack parameter and rely on the concept of anisotropic Young diagrams due to Kerov.

A q-analogue of de Finetti's theorem

A q-analogue of de Finetti's theorem is obtained in terms of a boundary problem for the q-Pascal graph. For q a power of prime this leads to a characterisation of random spaces over the Galois field F_q that are invariant under the natural action of the infinite group of invertible matrices with coefficients from F_q.

Difference operators and determinantal point processes

We consider a family {P} of determinantal point processes arising in representation theory and random matrix theory. The processes live on the one-dimensional lattice and their correlation kernels correspond to projection operators in the l^2 Hilbert space on the lattice. Moreover, these projections are spectral projections associated to certain selfadjoint second order difference operators on the lattice. The aim of the note is to demonstrate that the difference operators in question can be efficiently employed in the study of limit transitions inside the family {P}.

Infinite-dimensional diffusions as limits of random walks on partitions

The present paper originated from our previous study of the problem of harmonic analysis on the infinite symmetric group. This problem leads to a family {P_z} of probability measures, the z-measures, which depend on the complex parameter z. The z-measures live on the Thoma simplex, an infinite-dimensional compact space which is a kind of dual object to the infinite symmetric group. The aim of the paper is to introduce stochastic dynamics related to the z-measures. Namely, we construct a family of diffusion processes in the Toma simplex indexed by the same parameter z. Our diffusions are obtained from certain Markov chains on partitions of natural numbers n in a scaling limit as n goes to infinity. These Markov chains arise in a natural way, due to the approximation of the infinite symmetric group by the increasing chain of the finite symmetric groups. Each z-measure P_z serves as a unique invariant distribution for the corresponding diffusion process, and the process is ergodic with respect to P_z. Moreover, P_z is a symmetrizing measure, so that the process is reversible. We describe the spectrum of its generator and compute the associated (pre)Dirichlet form.

Asymptotics of Plancherel-type random partitions

We present a solution to a problem suggested by Philippe Biane: We prove that a certain Plancherel-type probability distribution on partitions converges, as partitions get large, to a new determinantal random point process on the set {0,1,2,...} of nonnegative integers. This can be viewed as an edge limit ransition. The limit process is determined by a correlation kernel on {0,1,2,...} which is expressed through the Hermite polynomials, we call it the discrete Hermite kernel. The proof is based on a simple argument which derives convergence of correlation kernels from convergence of unbounded self-adjoint difference operators. Our approach can also be applied to a number of other probabilistic models. As an example, we discuss a bulk limit for one more Plancherel-type model of random partitions.

Meixner polynomials and random partitions

The paper deals with a 3-parameter family of probability measures on the set of partitions, called the z-measures. The z-measures first emerged in connection with the problem of harmonic analysis on the infinite symmetric group. They are a special and distinguished case of Okounkov's Schur measures. It is known that any Schur measure determines a determinantal point process on the 1-dimensional lattice. In the particular case of z-measures, the correlation kernel of this process, called the discrete hypergeometric kernel, has especially nice properties. The aim of the paper is to derive the discrete hypergeometric kernel by a new method, based on a relationship between the z-measures and the Meixner orthogonal polynomial ensemble. The present paper can be viewed as an introduction to another our paper where the same approach is applied to studying a dynamical model related to the z-measures (Markov processes on partitions, Prob. Theory Rel. Fields 135 (2006), 84-152; arXiv: math-ph/0409075).

Limits of BC-type orthogonal polynomials as the number of variables goes to infinity

We describe the asymptotic behavior of the multivariate BC-type Jacobi polynomials as the number of variables and the Young diagram indexing the polynomial go to infinity. In particular, our results describe the approximation of the spherical functions of the infinite-dimensional symmetric spaces of type B,C,D or BC by the spherical functions of the corresponding finite-dimensional symmetric spaces. Similar results for the Jack polynomials were established in our earlier paper (Intern. Math. Res. Notices 1998, no. 13, 641-s682; arXiv:q-alg/9709011). The main results of the present paper were obtained in 1997.

Giambelli compatible point processes

We distinguish a class of random point processes which we call Giambelli compatible point processes. Our definition was partly inspired by determinantal identities for averages of products and ratios of characteristic polynomials for random matrices found earlier by Fyodorov and Strahov. It is closely related to the classical Giambelli formula for Schur symmetric functions. We show that orthogonal polynomial ensembles, z-measures on partitions, and spectral measures of characters of generalized regular representations of the infinite symmetric group generate Giambelli compatible point processes. In particular, we prove determinantal identities for averages of analogs of characteristic polynomials for partitions. Our approach provides a direct derivation of determinantal formulas for correlation functions.

The boundary of the Eulerian number triangle

The Eulerian triangle is a classical array of combinatorial numbers defined by a linear recursion. The associated boundary problem asks one to find all extreme nonnegative solutions to a dual recursion. Exploiting connections with random permutations and Markov chains we show that the boundary is discrete and explicitly identify its elements.

Coherent permutations with descent statistic and the boundary problem for the graph of zigzag diagrams

The graph of zigzag diagrams is a close relative of Young's lattice. The boundary problem for this graph amounts to describing coherent random permutations with descent-set statistic, and is also related to certain positive characters on the algebra of quasi-symmetric functions. We establish connections to some further relatives of Young's lattice and solve the boundary problem by reducing it to the classification of spreadable total orders on integers, as recently obtained by Jacka and Warren.

Stochastic dynamics related to Plancherel measure on partitions

Consider the standard Poisson process in the first quadrant of the Euclidean plane, and for any point (u,v) of this quadrant take the Young diagram obtained by applying the Robinson-Schensted correspondence to the intersection of the Poisson point configuration with the rectangle with vertices (0,0), (u,0), (u,v), (0,v). It is known that the distribution of the random Young diagram thus obtained is the poissonized Plancherel measure with parameter uv. We show that for (u,v) moving along any southeast-directed curve in the quadrant, these Young diagrams form a Markov chain with continuous time. We also describe these chains in terms of jump rates. Our main result is the computation of the dynamical correlation functions of such Markov chains and their bulk and edge scaling limits.

Markov processes on partitions

We introduce and study a family of Markov processes on partitions. The processes preserve the so-called z-measures on partitions previously studied in connection with harmonic analysis on the infinite symmetric group. We show that the dynamical correlation functions of these processes have determinantal structure and we explicitly compute their correlation kernels. We also compute the scaling limits of the kernels in two different regimes. The limit kernels describe the asymptotic behavior of large rows and columns of the corresponding random Young diagrams, and the behavior of the Young diagrams near the diagonal. Our results show that recently discovered analogy between random partitions arising in representation theory and spectra of random matrices extends to the associated time-dependent models.

Representation theory and random point processes

We discuss a connection between two areas of mathematics which until recently seemed to be rather distant from each other: (1) noncommutative harmonic analysis on groups and (2) some topics in probability theory related to random point processes. In order to make the paper accessible to readers not familiar with either of these areas, we explain all needed basic concepts. This is an extended version of G.Olshanski's talk at the 4th European Congress of Mathematics.

Harmonic analysis on the infinite symmetric group

Let S be the group of finite permutations of the naturals 1,2,... The subject of the paper is harmonic analysis for the Gelfand pair (G,K), where G stands for the product of two copies of S while K is the diagonal subgroup in G. The spherical dual to (G,K) (that is, the set of irreducible spherical unitary representations) is an infinite-dimensional space. For such Gelfand pairs, the conventional scheme of harmonic analysis is not applicable and it has to be suitably modified. We construct a compactification of S called the space of virtual permutations. It is no longer a group but it is still a G-space. On this space, there exists a unique G-invariant probability measure which should be viewed as a true substitute of Haar measure. More generally, we define a 1-parameter family of probability measures on virtual permutations, which are quasi-invariant under the action of G. Using these measures we construct a family {T_z} of unitary representations of G depending on a complex parameter z. We prove that any T_z admits a unique decomposition into a multiplicity free integral of irreducible spherical representations of (G,K). Moreover, the spectral types of different representations (which are defined by measures on the spherical dual) are pairwise disjoint. Our main result concerns the case of integral values of parameter z: then we obtain an explicit decomposition of T_z into irreducibles. The case of nonintegral z is quite different. It was studied by Borodin and Olshanski, see e.g. the survey math.RT/0311369.

An introduction to harmonic analysis on the infinite symmetric group

The aim of the present survey paper is to provide an accessible introduction to a new chapter of representation theory - harmonic analysis for noncommutative groups with infinite-dimensional dual space. I omitted detailed proofs but tried to explain the main ideas of the theory and its connections with other fields. The fact that irreducible representations of the groups in question depend on infinitely many parameters leads to a number of new effects which never occurred in conventional noncommutative harmonic analysis. A link with stochastic point processes is especially emphasized. The exposition focuses on a single group, the infinite symmetric group. The reason is that presently this particular example is worked out the most. Furthermore, the infinite symmetric group can serve as a very good model for more complicated groups like the infinite-dimensional unitary group.
