On exotic objects made of dark energy and dark matter: Mass-to-radius profiles and tidal Love numbers

We investigate some properties of exotic spherical configurations made of dark matter and dark energy. For the former we adopt a polytropic equation-of-state, while for the latter we adopt the Extended Chaplygin gas equation-of-state. Solving the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations, within the 2-fluid formalism, we compute the factor of compactness, the mass-to-radius relationships, as well as the tidal Love numbers and dimensionless deformabilities. A comparison between single fluid objects and 2-fluid configurations is made as well.

Regular charged black holes, energy conditions and quasinormal modes

We discuss energy conditions and quasinormal modes for scalar perturbations of regular charged black holes within the framework of General Relativity coupled to non-linear electrodynamics. The frequencies are computed numerically adopting the WKB method, while in the eikonal limit an analytic expression for the spectra is obtained. The impact of the electric charge, the angular degree, and the overtone number on the spectra is investigated in detail. We find that all frequencies are characterized by a negative imaginary part, and that each type of energy conditions imply a different quasinormal spectrum.

Radial Oscillations in Neutron Stars with Delta Baryons

We investigate the effect of $Δ$ baryons on the radial oscillations of neutron and hyperon stars, employing a density-dependent relativistic mean-field model. The spin-$3/2$ baryons are described by the Rarita-Schwinger Lagrangian density. The baryon-meson coupling constants for the spin-3/2 decuplet and the spin-1/2 baryonic octet are calculated using a unified approach relying on the fact that the Yukawa couplings present in the Lagrangian density of the mean-field models must be invariant under the SU(3) and SU(6) group transformations. We calculate the 20 lowest eigenfrequencies and corresponding oscillation functions of $Δ$-inclusive nuclear (N+$Δ$) and hyperonic matter (N+H+$Δ$) by solving the Sturm-Liouville boundary value problem and also verifying its validity. We see that the lowest mode frequencies for N+$Δ$ and N+H EoSs are higher as compared to the pure nucleonic matter because of the deltas and hyperons present. Furthermore, the separation between consecutive modes increases with the addition of hyperons and $Δ$s.

Radial Oscillations of Dark Matter admixed Neutron Stars

Within the relativistic mean-field model, we investigate the properties of dark matter (DM) admixed neutron stars, considering non-rotating objects made of isotropic matter. We adopt the IOPB-I hadronic equation of state (EOS) by assuming that the fermionic DM within super-symmetric models has already been accreted inside the neutron star (NS). The impact of DM on the mass-radius relationships and the radial oscillations of pulsating DM admixed neutron stars (with and without the crust) are explored. It is observed that the presence of DM softens the EOS, which in turn lowers the maximum mass and its corresponding radius. Moreover, adding DM results in higher frequencies of pulsating objects and hence we show the linearity of fundamental mode frequency of canonical NS with DM Fermi momentum. We also investigate the profile of eigenfunctions solving the Sturm-Liouville boundary value problem, and verify its validity. Further, we study the stability of NSs considering the fundamental mode frequency variation with the mass of the star, and verify the stability criterion $\partial M/\partialρ_c > 0$. Finally, the effect of the crust on the large frequency separation for different DM Fermi momenta is shown as well.

Anisotropic Quark Stars with an Interacting Quark Equation of State within the Complexity Factor Formalism

Within the framework of Einstein's General Relativity we study strange quark stars assuming an interacting equation-of-state. Taking into account the presence of anisotropies in a sphere made of ultra dense matter, we employ the formalism based on the complexity factor. We integrate the structure equations numerically imposing the appropriate conditions both at the center and at the surface of the stars, thus obtaining interior solutions describing hydrostatic equilibrium. Making use of well-established criteria, we demonstrate that the solutions obtained here are well behaved and realistic. A comparison with another, more conventional approach, is made as well. Our numerical results are summarized in a number of figures.

On the impact of non-local gravity on compact stars

We study the impact of non-local modifications of General Relativity on stellar structure. In particular, assuming an analytic distortion function and specific equations of state, we made use of remnant stars to put qualitative constraints on a parameter not directly restricted by solar system tests. Using current data sets available for white dwarfs and strange quark stars candidates we find that the most stringent bounds come from the objects displaying the highest core densities, namely strange quark stars. Specifically, the constraints obtained from this class of stars are three to four orders of magnitude tighter than those obtained using white dwarfs.

Quasinormal modes for a non-minimally coupled scalar field in a five-dimensional Einstein-power-Maxwell background

We study the propagation of massless scalar fields non-minimally coupled to gravity in the background of five-dimensional Einstein-power-Maxwell black holes, and using the WKB and the pseudospectral Chebyshev methods we obtain the quasinormal frequencies (QNFs), which allow us to show the existence of stable and unstable QNFs depending on the power $k$ of the nonlinear electrodynamics, the $ξ$ parameter, which controls the strength of the non-minimal coupling, and on the size of the black hole.

Orbits of light rays in (1+2)-dimensional Einstein-power-Maxwell gravity: Exact analytical solution to the null geodesic equations

We study photon orbits within (1+2)-dimensional Einstein-power-Maxwell non-linear electrodynamics assuming a static and circularly symmetric background. An exact analytical solution to the null geodesic equations for light rays is obtained in terms of the Weierstraß function. We investigate in detail the impact of the photon energy, the electric charge of the black hole, and the integration constant (initial condition) on the shape of the orbits.

Binary X-ray sources in massive Brans-Dicke gravity

This study focuses on the X-ray emission of low-mass black hole binaries in massive Brans-Dicke gravity. First, we compute the accretion disk adopting the well-known Shakura-Sunyaev model for an optically thick, cool, and geometrically thin disk. Moreover, we assume that the gravitational field generated by the stellar-mass black hole is an analogue of the Schwarzschild space-time of Einstein's theory in massive Brans-Dicke gravity. We compute the most relevant quantities of interest, i.e., i) the radial velocity, ii) the energy and surface density, and iii) the pressure as a function entirely of the radial coordinate. We also compute the soft spectral component of the X-ray emission produced by the disk. Furthermore, we investigate in detail how the mass of the scalar field modifies the properties of the binary as described by the more standard Schwarzschild solution.

Tidal deformability and radial oscillations of anisotropic polytropic spheres

We compute the equilibrium, the fundamental eigenfrequency of oscillations modes, and quadrupolar tidal deformability of anisotropic polytropic spheres. These studies are respectively performed through the numerical solution of the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equation, Chandrasekhar radial oscillation equations, and nonlinear first-order Riccati equation for tidal deformability, all modified from their original version to include the anisotropic effects. For the polytropic exponent $γ=2$ and the anisotropic model of Cattoen, Faber, and Visser, we show that the anisotropy could be reflected in the radial pressure, energy density, speed of sound, radial stability, and tidal deformability.

Structural properties of charged compact stars with color-flavour-locked quarks matter

The observations of pulsars with masses close to 2$M_{\odot}$ have put strong constraints on the equation of state (EoS) of neutron-rich matter at supranuclear densities. Moreover, the exact internal composition of those objects is largely unknown to us. Aiming to reach the 2$M_{\odot}$ limit, here we investigate the impact of electric charge on properties of compact stars assuming that the charge distribution is proportional to the mass density. The study is carried out by solving the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equation for a well-motivated exotic quark matter in the color-flavor-locked (CFL) phase of color superconductivity. The existence of the CFL phase may be the true ground state of hadronic matter with the possibility of the existence of a pure stable quark star (QS). Concerning the equation-of-state, we obtain structural properties of quark stars and compute the mass, the radius as well as the total electric charge of the star. We analyze the dependence of the physical properties of these QSs depending on the free parameters with special attention on mass-radius relation. We also briefly discuss the mass vs central mass density $(M-ε_c)$ relation for stability, the effect of electric charge and compactness. Finally, our results are compared with the recent observations data on mass-radius relationship.

Slowly rotating dark energy stars

We study isotropic and slowly-rotating stars made of dark energy adopting the extended Chaplygin equation-of-state. We compute the moment of inertia as a function of the mass of the stars, both for rotating and non-rotating objects. The solution for the non-diagonal metric component as a function of the radial coordinate for three different star masses is shown as well. We find that i) the moment of inertia increases with the mass of the star, ii) in the case of non-rotating objects the moment of inertia grows faster, and iii) the curve corresponding to rotation lies below the one corresponding to non-rotating stars.

Interacting dark sector: Lagrangian formulation based on two canonical scalar fields

We study in some detail an interacting cosmological model based on two canonical scalar fields starting from a Lagrangian description. Contrary to other more phenomenological approaches where non-relativistic matter and dark energy are cosmological perfect fluids, and where a source term is added by hand at the level of the continuity equations, here within Einstein's theory we model the dark sector, which dominates the evolution of the universe, as two minimally coupled scalar fields, out of which the first play the role of dark matter and the second plays the role of dark energy. We compute both the deceleration parameter and the distance modulus versus red-shift, and we demonstrate that the model is capable of explaining the current cosmic acceleration. We find that a negative coupling constant implies two distinctive features, which comprise two robust predictions of the model studied in the present work, and which are the following: a) a transient acceleration phase, and b) a collapsing Universe, or in other words an initial expansion which is followed by a contraction leading eventually to a Big-Crunch.

Anisotropic Stars in 4D Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet Gravity

The current trend concerning dense matter physics at sufficiently high densities and low temperatures is expected to behave as a degenerate Fermi gas of quarks forming Cooper pairs, namely a color superconductor, in the core of compact objects. In this context, we study the anisotropy of quark stars (QSs) assuming the internal composition to be comprised of homogeneous, charge neutral 3-flavor interacting quark matter with $\mathcal{O}(m_s^4)$ corrections. Using the equation of state (EoS) with the Tolmann-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) structure equations, we perform numerical calculation for quark stars and determine the maximum mass-radius relation in the context of $4D$ Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) gravity. In particular, we consider the effects of Gauss-Bonnet (GB) coupling constant on the diagrams related to mass-radius $(M-R)$ relation and the mass-central mass density $(M-ρ_c)$ relation of QSs. We pay particular attention to the influence of the anisotropy in the equilibrium and stability of strange stars. We also study the other properties of QSs related to compactness and binding energy. Interestingly, our result provides circumstantial evidence in favor of super-massive pulsars in $4D$ EGB gravity.

Accretion of matter and spectra of Binary X-ray sources in Massive Gravity

We study low-mass binary X-ray sources involving stellar mass black holes within massive gravity. Regarding the accretion disk, we adopt the standard model for an optically thick, cool, and geometrically thin disk by Shakura-Sunyaev. For the gravitational field generated by the black hole, we consider the analogue of the Schwarzschild-de Sitter space-time of Einstein's theory in massive gravity, for which we found an additional term linear in the radial coordinate. Then, we compute the radial velocity, the energy density and the pressure as a function of the radial coordinate, and the X-ray emission's soft spectral component expected from the disk. We also investigated in detailed the impact of this new geometry. Our result indicates that by using observed spectra from confirmed X-ray binaries involving astrophysical black holes, we can put strong constraints on alternative theories of gravity.

ISCOs and OSCOs in the presence of a positive cosmological constant in massive gravity

We study the impact of a non-vanishing (positive) cosmological constant on the innermost and outermost stable circular orbits (ISCOs and OSCOs, respectively) within massive gravity in four dimensions. The gravitational field generated by a point-like object within this theory is known, generalizing the usual Schwarzschild--de Sitter geometry of General Relativity. In the non-relativistic limit, the gravitational potential differs by the one corresponding to the Schwarzschild--de Sitter geometry by a term that is linear in the radial coordinate with some prefactor $γ$, which is the only free parameter. Starting from the geodesic equations for massive test particles and the corresponding effective potential, we obtain a polynomial of fifth order that allows us to compute the innermost and outermost stable circular orbits. Next, we numerically compute the real and positive roots of the polynomial for several different structures (from the hydrogen atom to stars and globular clusters to galaxies and galaxy clusters) considering three distinct values of the parameter $γ$, determined using physical considerations, such as galaxy rotation curves and orbital precession. Similarly to the Kottler spacetime, both ISCOs and OSCOs appear. Their astrophysical relevance as well as the comparison with the Kottler spacetime are briefly discussed.

Electrically charged compact stars with an interacting quark equation of state

We investigate the properties of non-rotating, electrically charged strange quark stars in four-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory. For quark matter we adopt the well-motivated quantum chromodynamics (QCD) equation-of-state, while for the charge density we assume it is proportional to the mass density. The system of coupled structure equations are integrated numerically, and we compute the mass, the radius as well as the total electric charge of the stars. Moreover, we perform a detailed numerical study of the effect of electric charge using the interacting quark equation-of-state. We find that stars as heavy as two solar masses can be supported, and that the highest radius and highest mass of the stars increase with the charge density.

Growth of structures and redshift-space distortion data in scale-dependent gravity

This study is devoted to the implications of scale-dependent gravity in Cosmology. Redshift-space distortion data indicate that there is a tension between $Λ$CDM and available observations as far as the value of the rms density fluctuation, $σ_8$, is concerned. It has been pointed out that this tension may be alleviated in alternative theories in which gravity is weaker at red-shift $z \sim 1$. We study the evolution of density perturbations for non-relativistic matter on top of a spatially flat FLRW Universe, and we compute the combination $A=f σ_8$ in the framework of scale-dependent gravity, where both Newton's constant and the cosmological constant are allowed to vary with time. Upon comparison between available observational data (supernovae data as well as redshift-space distortion data) and theoretical predictions of the model, we determine the numerical value of $σ_8$ that best fits the data.
