Confinement and finite-range effects in a quasi-two-dimensional gas of fermionic dimers

We investigate the ground-state properties of ultracold two-component Fermi gases in the presence of a transverse harmonic potential, focusing on the strongly interacting regime in which pairs of fermions form tightly bound molecules. Using the fixed-node diffusion Monte Carlo method, we calculate the equation of state and density profiles for the full fermionic system, which allows us to address the importance of finite-range corrections arising from the internal fermionic structure of the dimers. We interpret the results in terms of a molecular Bose gas in quasi-two-dimensional confinement and compare them with theoretical predictions for a weakly interacting two-dimensional Bose gas, identifying the range of validity of mean-field and beyond-mean-field descriptions. We also develop an analytical theory for the transverse density profile, capturing its broadening with increasing interaction strength. This work provides a benchmark for an effective bosonic description of strongly bound fermionic dimers and offers new insights into confinement-induced dimensional effects.

Universal relations in Bose gases with power-law interactions in two and three dimensions

We derive universal relations between thermodynamic quantities and the pair distribution function for bosons interacting via power-law interactions in three and two dimensions. We find beyond mean-field expressions for Tan's contact and establish new connections between the chemical potential and potential energy per particle, characteristic of systems with finite-range interactions. The obtained results are relevant for dipoles, quadrupoles, Rydberg atoms, excitons, van der Waals atoms, and other systems in the dilute limit.

Superfluid rings as quantum pendulums

A feasible experimental proposal to realize a non-dispersive quantum pendulum is presented. The proposed setup consists of an ultracold atomic cloud, featuring attractive interatomic interactions, loaded into a tilted ring potential. The classical and quantum domains are switched on by tuned interactions, and the classical dynamical stabilization of unstable states, i.e. {\it a la} Kapitza, is shown to be driven by quantum phase imprinting. The potential use of this system as a gravimeter is discussed.

Supersolid-Superfluid phase separation in the extended Bose-Hubbard model

Recent studies have suggested a new phase in the extended Bose-Hubbard model in one dimension at integer filling [1,2]. In this work, we show that this new phase is phase-separated into a supersolid and superfluid part, generated by mechanical instability. Numerical simulations are performed by means of the density matrix renormalization group algorithm in terms of matrix product states. In the phase-separated phase and the adjacent homogeneous superfluid and supersolid phases, we find peculiar spatial patterns in the entanglement spectrum and string-order correlation functions and show that they survive in the thermodynamic limit. In particular, we demonstrate that the elementary excitations of the homogeneous superfluid with enhanced periodic modulations are phonons, find the central charge to be $c=1$, and show that the velocity of sound, extracted from the intrinsic level splitting for finite systems, matches with the propagation velocity of local excitations in dynamical simulations. This suggests that the low-energy spectrum of the phase under investigation is effectively captured by a spinless Luttinger liquid, for which we find consistent results between the Luttinger parameter obtained from the linear dependence of the structure factor and the algebraic decay of the one-body density matrix.

Optical lattices as a tool to study defect-induced superfluidity

We study the superfluid response, the energetic and structural properties of a one-dimensional ultracold Bose gas in an optical lattice of arbitrary strength. We use the Bose-Fermi mapping in the limit of infinitely large repulsive interaction and the diffusion Monte Carlo method in the case of finite interaction. For slightly incommensurate fillings we find a superfluid behavior which is discussed in terms of vacancies and interstitials. It is shown that both the excitation spectrum and static structure factor are different for the cases of microscopic and macroscopic fractions of defects. This system provides a extremely well-controlled model for studying defect-induced superfluidity.

One-dimensional Bose gas in optical lattices of arbitrary strength

One-dimensional Bose gas with contact interaction in optical lattices at zero temperature is investigated by means of the exact diffusion Monte Carlo algorithm. The results obtained from the fundamental continuous model are compared with those obtained from the lattice (discrete) Bose-Hubbard model, using exact diagonalization, and from the quantum sine-Gordon model. We map out the complete phase diagram of the continuous model and determine the regions of applicability of the Bose-Hubbard model. Various physical quantities characterizing the systems are calculated and it is demonstrated that the sine-Gordon model used for shallow lattices is inaccurate.

Deterministic Entanglement via Molecular Dissociation in Integrated Atom Optics

Deterministic entanglement of neutral cold atoms can be achieved by combining several already available techniques like the creation/dissociation of neutral diatomic molecules, manipulating atoms with micro fabricated structures (atom chips) and detecting single atoms with almost 100% efficiency. Manipulating this entanglement with integrated/linear atom optics will open a new perspective for quantum information processing with neutral atoms.
