Fermionic atoms in a spin-dependent optical lattice potential: topological insulators with broken time-reversal symmetry

We propose a novel approach to study the topological properties of matter. In this approach, fermionic atoms are placed in an external magnetic field and in a two-dimensional spin-dependent optical lattice (SDOL) created by intersecting laser beams with a superposition of polarizations. To demonstrate the utility of the SDOL-based technique we compute the topological invariants (Chern numbers) for the SDOL bands as a function of an external magnetic field, and show the existence of a rich topology of the energy bands for this system which does not have parity-time-reversal symmetry. We explicitly consider $^{6}$Li $F=1/2$ atoms. Using a projection matrix method we observe topological phase transitions between an ordinary insulator, an abelian topological insulator, and a non-abelian topological insulator as the external magnetic field strength is varied. Upon introducing edges for the SDOL we find topological edge states (that are correlated with the band Chern numbers) that simultaneously exhibit non-trivial density and spin currents with both a rotational flow contribution and flow along the edge of the SDOL.

Rovibrational energy levels of the hydrogen molecule through nonadiabatic perturbation theory

We present an accurate theoretical determination of rovibrational energy levels of the hydrogen molecule and its isotopologues in its electronic ground state. We consider all significant corrections to the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, obtained within nonadiabatic perturbation theory, including the mixed nonadiabatic-relativistic effects. Quantum electrodynamic corrections in the leading $α^5\,m$ and the next-to-leading $α^6\,m$ orders, as well as finite nuclear size effect, are also taken into account but within the Born-Oppenheimer approximation only. Final results for the transition wavelength between rovibrational levels achieve accuracy of the order of $10^{-3}$--$10^{-7}$ cm$^{-1}$, and are provided by simple to use computer code.

Noble gas, alkali and alkaline atoms interacting with a gold surface

The attractive branch of the interaction potentials with the surface of gold have been computed for a large variety of atomic systems: the hydrogen atom, noble gases (He, Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe), alkali atoms (Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs) and alkaline atoms (Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba). The results include highly accurate dynamic polarizabilities for the helium atom calculated using a variational method and explicitly correlated wavefunctions. For other atoms considered we used the data available in the literature. The interaction potentials include both the effects of retardation of the electromagnetic interactions and a realistic representation of the optical response function of gold (beyond the approximation of a perfect conductor). An explicit comparison of our result to the interaction between an atom and a perfect conductor is given.
