Study of the Global Alignment for the DAMPE Detector

The Dark Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is designed as a high energy particle detector for probing cosmic-rays and $γ-$rays in a wide energy range. The trajectory of the incident particle is mainly measured by the Silicon-Tungsten tracKer-converter (STK) sub-detector, which heavily depends on the precise internal alignment correction as well as the accuracy of the global coordinate system. In this work, we carried out a global alignment method to validate the potential displacement of these sub-detectors, and particularly demonstrated that the track reconstruction of STK can well satisfy the required objectives by means of comparing flight data and simulations.

Constraints on dark matter annihilation from the Event Horizon Telescope Observations of M87$^\star$

The fast developments of radio astronomy open a new window to explore the properties of Dark Matter (DM). The recent direct imaging of the supermassive black hole (SMBH) at the center of M87 radio galaxy by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) collaboration is expected to be very useful to search for possible new physics. In this work, we illustrate that such results can be used to detect the possible synchrotron radiation signature produced by DM annihilation from the innermost region of the SMBH. Assuming the existence of a spike DM density profile, we obtain the flux density due to DM annihilation induced electrons and positrons, and derive new limits on the DM annihilation cross section via the comparison with the EHT integral flux density at 230 GHz. Our results show that the parameter space can be probed by the EHT observations is largely complementary to other experiments. For DM with typical mass regions of being weakly interacting massive particles, the annihilation cross section several orders of magnitude below the thermal production level can be excluded by the EHT observations under the density spike assumption. Future EHT observations may further improve the sensitivity on the DM searches, and may also provide a unique opportunity to test the interplay between DM and the SMBH.

Constrains on the electric charges of the binary black holes with GWTC-1 events

Testing black hole's charged property is a fascinating topic in modified gravity and black hole astrophysics. In the first Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalog (GWTC-1), ten binary black hole merger events have been formally reported, and these gravitational wave signals have significantly enhanced our understanding of the black hole. In this paper, we try to constrain the amount of electric charge with the parameterized post-Einsteinian framework by treating the electric charge as a small perturbation in a Bayesian way. We find that the current limits in our work are consistent with the result of Fisher information matrix method in previous works. We also develop a waveform model considering a leading order charge effect for binary black hole inspiral.

Mirror Dark Matter and Electronic Recoil Events in XENON1T

Recently, the XENON1T experiment has reported the possible detection of an excess in the electronic recoil spectrum. Such an excess may indicate the presence of new physics. In this work, we suggest that the scattering of mirror electrons with ordinary electrons through photon$-$mirror photon kinetic mixing with parameter $ε\sim 10^{-12}(n_{\rm e'}/0.2{\rm cm^{-3}})^{-1/2}({v_{\rm c}^0/5\times 10^{9}~{\rm cm~s^{-1}}})^{1/2}$ may account for the excess electronic recoil events in XENON1T, where $n_{\rm e'}$ is the density of mirror electron and $v_{\rm c}^0$ is the cutoff velocity of the mirror electron arriving at the earth. Interestingly, this parameter to interpret the excess of XENON1T electronic recoil spectrum are consistent with the constrains of Darkside50.

Testing the ALP-photon coupling with polarization measurements of Sagittarius A*

Ultra-light bosons such as axions or axion-like particles (ALPs), are promising candidates to solve the dark matter problem. A unique way to detect such ALPs is to search for the periodic oscillation feature of the position angles of linearly polarized photons emitted from the regions where ALP dark matter forms a solitonic core. In this work, we use the high-resolution polarimetric measurements of the radiation near the super-massive black hole (SMBH) in the center of the Milky Way, i.e., Sagittarius A$^\star$ (Sgr A$^\star$), by a sub-array of the Event Horizon Telescope to search for the ultra-light ALPs. We derive upper limits on the ALP-photon coupling of $\sim 10^{-12}{\rm GeV^{-1}}$ for ALP masses of $m\sim (10^{-19}-10^{-18})$eV. Our results are stronger than that derived from the observations of SN1987A and a population of supernovae in the mass window of ($10^{-19}-10^{-17}$)eV. Improved polarimetric measurements with the full Event Horizon Telescope can further strengthen the constraints.

Correction Method for the Readout Saturation of the DAMPE Calorimeter

The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is a space-borne high energy cosmic-ray and $γ$-ray detector which operates smoothly since the launch on December 17, 2015. The bismuth germanium oxide (BGO) calorimeter is one of the key sub-detectors of DAMPE used for energy measurement and electron proton identification. For events with total energy deposit higher than decades of TeV, the readouts of PMTs coupled on the BGO crystals would become saturated, which results in an underestimation of the energy measurement. Based on detailed simulations, we develop a correction method for the saturation effect according to the shower development topologies and energies measured by neighbouring BGO crystals. The verification with simulated and on-orbit events shows that this method can well reconstruct the energy deposit in the saturated BGO crystal.

Implications on the origin of cosmic rays in light of 10 TV spectral softenings

Precise measurements of the energy spectra of cosmic rays (CRs) show various kinds of features deviating from single power-laws, which give very interesting and important implications on their origin and propagation. Previous measurements from a few balloon and space experiments indicate the existence of spectral softenings around 10 TV for protons (and probably also for Helium nuclei). Very recently, the DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) measurement about the proton spectrum clearly reveals such a softening with a high significance. Here we study the implications of these new measurements, as well as the groundbased indirect measurements, on the origin of CRs. We find that a single component of CRs fails to fit the spectral softening and the air shower experiment data simultaneously. In the framework of multiple components, we discuss two possible scenarios, the multiple source population scenario and the background plus nearby source scenario. Both scenarios give reasonable fits to the wide-band data from TeV to 100 PeV energies. Considering the anisotropy observations, the nearby source model is favored.
