Boost AI Power: Data Augmentation Strategies with unlabelled Data and Conformal Prediction, a Case in Alternative Herbal Medicine Discrimination with Electronic Nose

Electronic nose has been proven to be effective in alternative herbal medicine classification, but due to the nature of supervised learning, previous research heavily relies on the labelled training data, which are time-costly and labor-intensive to collect. To alleviate the critical dependency on the training data in real-world applications, this study aims to improve classification accuracy via data augmentation strategies. The effectiveness of five data augmentation strategies under different training data inadequacy are investigated in two scenarios: the noise-free scenario where different availabilities of unlabelled data were considered, and the noisy scenario where different levels of Gaussian noises and translational shifts were added to represent sensor drifts. The five augmentation strategies, namely noise-adding data augmentation, semi-supervised learning, classifier-based online learning, Inductive Conformal Prediction (ICP) online learning and our novel ensemble ICP online learning proposed in this study, are experimented and compared against supervised learning baseline, with Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) as the classifiers. Our novel strategy, ensemble ICP online learning, outperforms the others by showing non-decreasing classification accuracy on all tasks and a significant improvement on most simulated tasks (25out of 36 tasks,p<=0.05). Furthermore, this study provides a systematic analysis of different augmentation strategies. It shows at least one strategy significantly improved the classification accuracy with LDA (p<=0.05) and non-decreasing classification accuracy with SVM in each task. In particular, our proposed strategy demonstrated both effectiveness and robustness in boosting the classification model generalizability, which can be employed in other machine learning applications.

The Role of the Hercules Autonomous Vehicle During the COVID-19 Pandemic: An Autonomous Logistic Vehicle for Contactless Goods Transportation

Since early 2020, the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has spread rapidly across the world. As at the date of writing this article, the disease has been globally reported in 223 countries and regions, infected over 108 million people and caused over 2.4 million deaths (https://covid19.who.int/, accessed on Feb. 17, 2021). Avoiding person-to-person transmission is an effective approach to control and prevent the pandemic. However, many daily activities, such as transporting goods in our daily life, inevitably involve person-to-person contact. Using an autonomous logistic vehicle to achieve contact-less goods transportation could alleviate this issue. For example, it can reduce the risk of virus transmission between the driver and customers. Moreover, many countries have imposed tough lockdown measures to reduce the virus transmission (e.g., retail, catering) during the pandemic, which causes inconveniences for human daily life. Autonomous vehicle can deliver the goods bought by humans, so that humans can get the goods without going out. These demands motivate us to develop an autonomous vehicle, named as Hercules, for contact-less goods transportation during the COVID-19 pandemic. The vehicle is evaluated through real-world delivering tasks under various traffic conditions.

On the general position set of two classes of graphs

The general position problem is to find the cardinality of a largest vertex subset S such that no triple of vertices of S lie on a common geodesic. For a connected graph G, the cardinality of S is denoted by gp(G) and called gp-number (or general position number) of G. In the paper, we obtain an upper bound and a lower bound regarding gp-number in all cactus with k cycles and t pendant edges. Furthermore, the gp-number of wheel graph is determined.

CT Super-resolution GAN Constrained by the Identical, Residual, and Cycle Learning Ensemble(GAN-CIRCLE)

Computed tomography (CT) is widely used in screening, diagnosis, and image-guided therapy for both clinical and research purposes. Since CT involves ionizing radiation, an overarching thrust of related technical research is development of novel methods enabling ultrahigh quality imaging with fine structural details while reducing the X-ray radiation. In this paper, we present a semi-supervised deep learning approach to accurately recover high-resolution (HR) CT images from low-resolution (LR) counterparts. Specifically, with the generative adversarial network (GAN) as the building block, we enforce the cycle-consistency in terms of the Wasserstein distance to establish a nonlinear end-to-end mapping from noisy LR input images to denoised and deblurred HR outputs. We also include the joint constraints in the loss function to facilitate structural preservation. In this deep imaging process, we incorporate deep convolutional neural network (CNN), residual learning, and network in network techniques for feature extraction and restoration. In contrast to the current trend of increasing network depth and complexity to boost the CT imaging performance, which limit its real-world applications by imposing considerable computational and memory overheads, we apply a parallel $1\times1$ CNN to compress the output of the hidden layer and optimize the number of layers and the number of filters for each convolutional layer. Quantitative and qualitative evaluations demonstrate that our proposed model is accurate, efficient and robust for super-resolution (SR) image restoration from noisy LR input images. In particular, we validate our composite SR networks on three large-scale CT datasets, and obtain promising results as compared to the other state-of-the-art methods.

Tool Breakage Detection using Deep Learning

In manufacture, steel and other metals are mainly cut and shaped during the fabrication process by computer numerical control (CNC) machines. To keep high productivity and efficiency of the fabrication process, engineers need to monitor the real-time process of CNC machines, and the lifetime management of machine tools. In a real manufacturing process, breakage of machine tools usually happens without any indication, this problem seriously affects the fabrication process for many years. Previous studies suggested many different approaches for monitoring and detecting the breakage of machine tools. However, there still exists a big gap between academic experiments and the complex real fabrication processes such as the high demands of real-time detections, the difficulty in data acquisition and transmission. In this work, we use the spindle current approach to detect the breakage of machine tools, which has the high performance of real-time monitoring, low cost, and easy to install. We analyze the features of the current of a milling machine spindle through tools wearing processes, and then we predict the status of tool breakage by a convolutional neural network(CNN). In addition, we use a BP neural network to understand the reliability of the CNN. The results show that our CNN approach can detect tool breakage with an accuracy of 93%, while the best performance of BP is 80%.

Structure-sensitive Multi-scale Deep Neural Network for Low-Dose CT Denoising

Computed tomography (CT) is a popular medical imaging modality in clinical applications. At the same time, the x-ray radiation dose associated with CT scans raises public concerns due to its potential risks to the patients. Over the past years, major efforts have been dedicated to the development of Low-Dose CT (LDCT) methods. However, the radiation dose reduction compromises the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), leading to strong noise and artifacts that down-grade CT image quality. In this paper, we propose a novel 3D noise reduction method, called Structure-sensitive Multi-scale Generative Adversarial Net (SMGAN), to improve the LDCT image quality. Specifically, we incorporate three-dimensional (3D) volumetric information to improve the image quality. Also, different loss functions for training denoising models are investigated. Experiments show that the proposed method can effectively preserve structural and texture information from normal-dose CT (NDCT) images, and significantly suppress noise and artifacts. Qualitative visual assessments by three experienced radiologists demonstrate that the proposed method retrieves more detailed information, and outperforms competing methods.

Magnetic Properties of New Triangular Lattice Magnets A${_4}$B'B${_2}$O$_{12}$

The geometrically frustrated two dimensional triangular lattice magnets A${_4}$B'B${_2}$O$_{12}$ (A = Ba, Sr, La; B' = Co, Ni, Mn; B = W, Re) have been studied by x-ray diffraction, AC and DC susceptibilities, powder neutron diffraction, and specific heat measurements. The results reveal that (i) the samples containing Co$^{2+}$ (effective spin-1/2) and Ni$^{2+}$ (spin-1) ions with small spin numbers exhibit ferromagnetic (FM) ordering while the sample containing Mn$^{2+}$ (spin-5/2) ions with a large spin number exhibits antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering. We ascribe these spin number manipulated ground states to the competition between the AFM B'-O-O-B' and FM B'-O-B-O-B' superexchange interactions; (ii) the chemical pressure introduced into the Co containing samples through the replacement of different size ions on the A site finely tunes the FM ordering temperature of the system. We attribute this effect to the modification of the FM interaction strength induced by the change of the O-B-O angle through chemical pressure.

Experimental and numerical analysis of tribological behavior of CrAl(Si)N films during Scratch

Scratch sliding tests with a ZrO2 ball and CrAlSiN films with different Si content were conducted due to CrAlSiN films having high hardness and good wear resistance. After up to 6000 cycles the specimens were analyzed by Scanning Electron Microscopy. The friction coefficient of CrAlSiN was lower than that of CrAlN film.A corresponding three-dimensional finite element model was constructed with the help of the ABAQUS to describe the mechanical response during scratch. A comparison of experimental and computational results revealed that the small elastic deformation took place in the films and substrates;the deformation friction coefficient was negligible in comparison with the Coulomb friction coefficient;and with increasing Young's modulus, the stress concentration was more obvious in CrAlSiN than in CrAlN.
