Phonon induced spin squeezing based on geometric phase

A scheme to achieve spin squeezing using a geometric phase induced by a single mechanical mode is proposed. The analytical and numerical results show that the ultimate degree of spin squeezing depends on the parameter $\frac{n_{th}+1/2}{Q\sqrt{N}}$, which is the ratio between the thermal excitation, the quality factor and square root of ensemble size. The undesired coupling between the spin ensemble and the bath can be efficiently suppressed by Bang-Bang control pulses. With high quality factor, the ultimate limit of the ideal one-axis twisting spin squeezing can be obtained for an NV ensemble in diamond.

Detection efficiency and noise in semi-device independent randomness extraction protocol

In this paper, we analyze several critical issues in semi-device independent quantum information processing protocol. In practical experimental realization randomness generation in that scenario is possible only if the efficiency of the detectors used is above a certain threshold. Our analysis shows that the critical detection efficiency is 0.7071 in the symmetric setup, while in the asymmetric setup if one of the bases has perfect critical detection efficiency then the other one can be arbitrarily close to 0. We also analyze the semi-device independent random number generation efficiency based on different averages of guessing probability. To generate more randomness, the proper averaging method should be applied. Its choice depends on the value of a certain dimension witness. More importantly, the general analytical relationship between the maximal average guessing probability and dimension witness is given.

Experimental realisation of generalised qubit measurements based on quantum walks

We report an experimental implementation of a single-qubit generalised measurement scenario(POVM) based on a quantum walk model. The qubit is encoded in a single-photon polarisation. The photon performs a quantum walk on an array of optical elements, where the polarisation-dependent translation is performed via birefringent beam displacers and a change of the polarisation is implemented with the help of wave-plates. We implement: (i) Trine-POVM, i.e., the POVM elements uniformly distributed on an equatorial plane of the Bloch sphere; (ii) Symmetric-Informationally- Complete (SIC) POVM; and (iii) Unambiguous Discrimination of two non-orthogonal qubit states.

Experimental generation of tripartite telecom photons via an atomic ensemble and a nonlinear waveguide

Non-classical multi-photon and number states attracts many people because of their wide applications in fundamental quantum mechanics tests, quantum metrology and quantum computation, therefore it is a longstanding aim to generate such states experimentally. Here, we prepare photon triplets by using the spontaneously Raman scattering process in a hot atomic ensemble cascaded by the spontaneous parametric down conversion process in a periodical poled nonlinear waveguide, the strong temporal correlations of these three photons are observed. Our experiment represents the first combination of the different order nonlinear processes and different physical systems, showing the feasibility of such composite system in this research direction. In addition, the all photons in the prepared genuine triplet are in telecom band make them be suitable for long-distance quantum communication in optical fibre.

Topological superradiance in a degenerate Fermi gas

We predict the existence of a topological superradiant state in a two-component degenerate Fermi gas in a cavity. The superradiant light generation in the transversely driven cavity mode induces a cavity-assisted spin-orbit coupling in the system and opens a bulk gap at half-filling. This mechanism can simultaneously drive a topological phase transition in the system, yielding a topological superradiant phase. We map out the steady-state phase diagram of the system in the presence of an effective Zeeman field, and identify a critical quadracritical point beyond which the topological and the conventional superraidiant phase boundaries separate. We also propose to detect the topological phase transitions based on the unique signatures in the momentum-space density distribution.

Two-axis spin squeezing of two-component BEC via a continuous driving

In two-component BEC, the one-axis twisting Hamiltonian leads to spin squeezing with the limitation that scales with the number of atoms as $N^{-\frac{2}{3}}$. We propose a scheme to transform the one-axis twisting Hamiltonian into a two-axis twisting Hamiltonian, resulting in enhanced spin squeezing $\propto N^{-1}$ approaching the Heisenberg limit. Instead of pulse sequences, only one continuous driving field is required to realizing such transforming, thus the scheme is promising for experiment realizations, to an one-axis twisting Hamiltonian. Quantum information processing and quantum metrology may benefit from this method in the future.

Mismatched-basis statistics enable quantum key distribution with uncharacterized qubit sources

In the postprocessing of quantum key distribution, the raw key bits from the mismatched-basis measurements, where two parties use different bases, are normally discarded. Here, we propose a postprocessing method that exploits measurement statistics from mismatched-basis cases, and prove that incorporating these statistics enables uncharacterized qubit sources to be used in the measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution protocol and the Bennett-Brassard 1984 protocol, a case which is otherwise impossible.

The in-plane gradient magnetic field induced vortex lattices in spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensations

We consider the ground-state properties of the two-component spin-orbit coupled ultracold bosons subject to a rotationally symmetric in-plane gradient magnetic field. In the non-interacting case, the ground state supports giant-vortices carrying large angular momenta without rotating the trap. The vorticity is highly tunable by varying the amplitudes and orientations of the magnetic field. Interactions drive the system from a giant-vortex state to various configurations of vortex lattice states along a ring. Vortices exhibit ellipse-shaped envelops with the major and minor axes determined by the spin-orbit coupling and healing lengths, respectively. Phase diagrams of vortex lattice configurations are constructed and their stabilities are analyzed.

Controlled-Not Quantum Logic Gate in Two Strongly Coupled Semiconductor Charge Qubits

A crucial requirement for scalable quantum-information processing is the realization of multiple-qubit quantum gates. Universal multiple-qubit gates can be implemented by a set of universal single qubit gates and any one kind of two-qubit gate, such as a controlled-NOT (CNOT) gate. Semiconductor quantum dot qubits are a leading approach for the physical implementation of quantum computation, due to their potential for large-scale integration. Two-qubit gate operations have been so far only demonstrated in individual electron spin-based quantum dot systems. Due to the relatively short de-coherence time, charge qubits in quantum dots are generally considered to be inferior for going beyond single qubit level. Here, we demonstrate the benchmarking CNOT gate in two capacitively coupled charge qubits, each consisting of an electron confined in a GaAs/AlGaAs double quantum dot. Owing to the strong inter-qubit coupling strength, gate operations with a clock speed up to 5GHz has been realized. A processing tomography shows encouragingly that the universal two-qubit gate operations have comparable fidelities to that of spin-based two-qubit gates. Our results suggest that semiconductor charge qubits have a considerable potential for scalable quantum computing and may stimulate the use of long-range Coulomb interaction for coherent quantum control in other devices.

Raman Quantum Memory of Photonic Polarised Entanglement

Quantum entanglement of particles is regarded as a fundamental character in quantum information, in which quantum state should be given for whole system instead of independently describing single particle. Constructing quantum memory of photonic entanglement is essential for realizing quantum networks, which had been performed previously by many memory protocols. Of which Raman quantum memory gives advantages in broadband and high-speed properties, resulting in huge potential in quantum network and quantum computation. However, Raman quantum memory of photonic polarised entanglement is a challenge work and still missing. Here, we report two Raman quantum memories based on gas atomic ensembles: 1. Heralded Raman quantum memory of hybrid entanglement of path and polarization of single photon. 2. Raman storage of two-particle photonic polarised entangled state. Our experimental performances of these two different Raman quantum storages of photonic entanglement show a very promising prospective in quantum information science.

Observation of optical filtering effects with four-wave mixing in a cold atomic ensemble

We observe an optical filtering effect in four-wave mixing (FWM) process based on a cold atomic gas. The side peaks appear at the edges of pulse of generated optical field, and they propagate through the atomic media without absorption. The theoretical analysis shows that these side peaks corresponded to the high frequency part of pulse of generated signal, which means the atoms cannot response to the rapid change of the electromagnetic field in time. On the contrary, the low frequency components of generated signal are absorbed during the transmission through the atoms. In addition, we experimentally demonstrate that the backward side peak could be stored by using Raman transition in atomic ensemble and retrieved later.

Incoherent control of electromagnetically induced transparency and Aulter-Townes splitting

The absorption and dispersion of probe light is studied in an unified framework of three-level system, with coherent laser driving and incoherent pumping and relaxation. The electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and Autler-Townes splitting (ATS) are studied in details. In the phase diagram of the unified three-level system, there are distinct parameter regimes corresponding to different lineshapes and mechanisms, and the incoherent transition could control the cross-over between EIT and ATS. The incoherent control of the three-level system enables the investigation of various phenomena in quantum optics, and is beneficial for experiments of light-matter interactions.

Quantum phase transition of nonlocal Ising chain with transverse field in a resonator

We study the quantum phase transition in a spin chain with variable Ising interaction and position-dependent coupling to a resonator field. Such a complicated model, usually not present in natural physical systems, can be simulated by an array of qubits based on man-made devices and exhibits interesting behavior. We show that, when the coupling between the qubit and field is strong enough, a super-radiant phase transition occurs, and it is possible to pick a particular field mode to undergo this phase transition by properly modulating the strength of the Ising interaction. We also study the impact of the resonator field on the magnetic properties of the spin chain, and find a rich set of phases characterized by distinctive qubit correlation functions.

Decoy state measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution based on the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality

The measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (MDI-QKD) protocol is proposed to remove the detector side channel attacks, while its security relies on the assumption that the encoding systems are perfectly characterized. In contrast, the MDI-QKD protocol based on the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality (CHSH-MDI-QKD) weakens this assumption, which only requires the quantum state to be prepared in the two-dimensional Hilbert space and the devices are independent. In experimental realizations, the weak coherent state, which is always used in QKD systems due to the lack of an ideal single photon source, may be prepared in the high-dimensional space. In this paper, we investigate the decoy-state CHSH-MDI-QKD protocol with $s(3 \le s \le 5)$ intensities, including one signal state and $s-1$ decoy states, and we also consider the finite-size effect on the decoy-state CHSH-MDI-QKD protocol with five intensities. Simulation results show that this scheme is very practical.

Coupling two distant double quantum dots to a microwave resonator

With recent advances in the circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) architecture, hybrid systems that couple nano-devices to microwave resonators have been developing rapidly. Here we report an experimental demonstration of two graphene double quantum dots (DQDs) coupled over a distance of up to 60 μm, through a microwave resonator. We jointly measure the two DQDs' coupling to the resonator, which causes a nonlinear response in the resonator reflection amplitude in the vicinity of the degeneracy points of the two DQDs. This phenomenon is explained by the Tavis-Cummings (T-C) mode. We further characterize this nonlocal coupling by measuring the correlation between the DC currents in the two DQDs. This correlation is observed to be strongly dependent on the average photon number in the resonator. Our results explore T-C physics in electronic transport, and also contribute to the study of nonlocal transport and future implementations of remote electronic entanglement.

Field and long-term demonstration of a wide area quantum key distribution network

A wide area quantum key distribution (QKD) network deployed on communication infrastructures provided by China Mobile Ltd. is demonstrated. Three cities and two metropolitan area QKD networks were linked up to form the Hefei-Chaohu-Wuhu wide area QKD network with over 150 kilometers coverage area, in which Hefei metropolitan area QKD network was a typical full-mesh core network to offer all-to-all interconnections, and Wuhu metropolitan area QKD network was a representative quantum access network with point-to-multipoint configuration. The whole wide area QKD network ran for more than 5000 hours, from 21 December 2011 to 19 July 2012, and part of the network stopped until last December. To adapt to the complex and volatile field environment, the Faraday-Michelson QKD system with several stability measures was adopted when we designed QKD devices. Through standardized design of QKD devices, resolution of symmetry problem of QKD devices, and seamless switching in dynamic QKD network, we realized the effective integration between point-to-point QKD techniques and networking schemes.

Brillouin scattering induced transparency and non-reciprocal light storage

Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is a very fundamental interaction between light and travelling acoustic waves, which is mainly attributed to the electrostriction and photoelastic effects with the interaction strength being orders of magnitude larger than other nonlinearities. Although various photonic applications for all-optical light controlling based on SBS have been achieved in optical fiber and waveguides, the coherent light-acoustic interaction remains a challenge. Here, we experimentally demonstrated the Brillouin scattering induced transparency (BSIT) in a high quality optical microresonantor. Benefited from the triple-resonance in the whispering gallery cavity, the photon-phonon interaction is enhanced, and enables the light storage to the phonon, which has lifetime up to 10us. In addition, due to the phase matching condition, the stored circulating acoustic phonon can only interact with certain direction light, which leads to non-reciprocal light storage and retrieval. Our work paves the way towards the low power consumption integrated all-optical switching, isolator and circulator, as well as quantum memory.

Detuning Enhanced Cavity Spin Squeezing

The unconditionally squeezing of the collective spin of an atomic ensemble in a laser driven optical cavity (I. D. Leroux, M. H. Schleier-Smith, and V. Vuletic, Phys. Rev. Lett 104, 073602 (2010)) is studied and analyzed theoretically. Surprisingly, we find that the largely detuned driving laser can improve the scaling of cavity squeezing from $S^{-2/5}$ to $S^{-2/3}$, where S is the total atomic spin. Moreover, we also demonstrate that the experimental imperfection of photon scattering into free space can be efficiently suppressed by detuning.
