Lifshitz Transition and Nontrivial H-Doping Effect in Cr-based Superconductor KCr$_3$As$_3$H$_x$

We report the first-principles study on the H-intercalated Cr-based superconductor KCr$_3$As$_3$H$_x$. Our results show a paramagnetic ground state for KCr$_3$As$_3$H. The electronic structure consists of two quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) Fermi-surfaces and one 3D Fermi-surface which are mainly contributed by Cr-d$_{z^2}$, d$_{x^2-y^2}$ and d$_{xy}$ orbitals. The bare electron susceptibility shows a $Γ$-centered imaginary peak, indicating possible ferromagnetic spin fluctuations. Upon moderate hole doping, the system undergoes a Lifshitz transition, which may enhance the Q1D feature of the system. The Bader charge analysis and electron localization functions reveal a strong bonding nature of hydrogen in KCr$_3$As$_3$H, which results in a nontrivial electron doping in KCr$_3$As$_3$H.

BaTh$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$(N$_{0.7}$O$_{0.3}$)$_2$: An Iron-Based Superconductor Stabilized by Inter-Block-Layer Charge Transfer

Recently, An electron-doped 12442-type iron-based superconductor BaTh$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$(N$_{0.7}$O$_{0.3}$)$_2$ has been successfully synthesized with high-temperature solid-state reactions on basis of a structural design. The inter-block-layer charge transfer between the constituent units of "BaFe$_2$As$_2$" and "ThFeAsN$_{0.7}$O$_{0.3}$" was found to be essential to stabilize the target compound. Dominant electron-type conduction and bulk superconducting transition at ~22 K were demonstrated.

Electronic structure and $H$-$T$ phase diagram of Eu(Fe$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$)$_2$As$_2$

The iron-based superconductors represent a promising platform for high-temperature superconductivity, but the interactions underpinning their pairing present a puzzle. The EuFe$_2$As$_2$ family is unique among these materials for having magnetic order which onsets within the superconducting state, just below the superconducting transition. Superconductivity and magnetic order are normally antagonistic and often vie for the same unpaired electrons, but in this family the magnetism arises from largely localized Eu moments and they coexist, with the competition between these evenly-matched opponents leading to reentrant superconducting behavior. To help elucidate the physics in this family and the interactions between the magnetic order and superconductivity, we investigate the $H$--$T$ phase diagram near optimal Rh doping through specific heat, resistivity, and magnetization measurements, and study the electronic structure by angular-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The competition between the Eu and FeAs layers may offer a route to directly accessing the electronic structure under effective magnetic fields via ARPES, which is ordinarily a strictly zero-field technique.

Giant anisotropy in superconducting single crystals of CsCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$

CsCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$ is a newly discovered iron-based superconductor with $T_\mathrm{c}\sim$ 30 K containing double Fe$_2$As$_2$ layers that are separated by insulating Ca$_2$F$_2$ spacer layers. Here we report the transport and magnetization measurements on CsCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$ single crystals grown for the first time using the self flux of CsAs. We observed a huge resistivity anisotropy $ρ_c(T)/ρ_{ab}(T)$, which increases with decreasing temperature, from 750 at 300 K to 3150 at 32 K. The $ρ_c(T)$ data exhibit a non-metallic behavior above $\sim$140 K, suggesting an incoherent electronic state at high temperatures due to the dimension crossover. The superconducting onset transition temperature in $ρ_{ab}$ is 0.7 K higher than that in $ρ_c$, suggesting two-dimensional (2D) superconducting fluctuations. The lower and upper critical fields also show an exceptional anisotropy among iron-based superconductors. The $H_{c1}^\bot(T)$ data are well fitted using the model with two $s$-wave-like superconducting gaps, $Δ_1(0)=6.75$ meV and $Δ_2(0)=2.32$ meV. The inter-plane coherence length $ξ_c(0)$ is $3.6$ Å, remarkably smaller than the distance between conducting layers (8.6 Å), consolidating the 2D nature in the title material.

Magnetism and superconductivity in Eu(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_{x}$)As$_2$ ($x$ = 0, 0.04)

We report Eu-local-spin magnetism and Ni-doping-induced superconductivity (SC) in a 112-type ferroarsenide system Eu(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_{x}$)As$_2$. The non-doped EuFeAs$_2$ exhibits two primary magnetic transitions at $\sim$100 and $\sim$ 40 K, probably associated with a spin-density-wave (SDW) transition and an antiferromagnetic ordering in the Fe and Eu sublattices, respectively. Two additional successive transitions possibly related to Eu-spin modulations appear at 15.5 and 6.5 K. For the Ni-doped sample with $x$ = 0.04, the SDW transition disappears, and SC emerges at $T_\mathrm{c}$ = 17.5 K. The Eu-spin ordering remains at around 40 K, followed by the possible reentrant magnetic modulations with enhanced spin canting. Consequently, SC coexists with a weak spontaneous magnetization below 6.2 K in Eu(Fe$_{0.96}$Ni$_{0.04}$)As$_2$, which provides a complementary playground for the study of the interplay between SC and magnetism.

Weak metal-metal transition in the vanadium oxytelluride Rb$_{1-δ}$V$_2$Te$_2$O

We report the synthesis, crystal structure, physical properties, and first-principles calculations of a vanadium-based oxytelluride Rb$_{1-δ}$V$_2$Te$_2$O ($δ\approx0.2$). The crystal structure bears two-dimensional V$_2$O square nets sandwiched with tellurium layers, mimicking the structural motifs of cuprate and iron-based superconductors. The material exhibits metallic conductivity with dominant hole-type charge carriers. A weak metal-to-metal transition takes place at $\sim$100 K, which is conformably characterized by a slight kink/hump in the electrical resistivity, jumps in the Hall and Seebeck coefficients, a minute drop in the magnetic susceptibility, and a small peak in the heat capacity. Neither Bragg-peak splitting nor superlattice reflections can be detected within the resolution of conventional x-ray diffractions. The band-structure calculations show that V-3$d$ orbitals dominate the electronic states at around Fermi energy where a $d_{yz}/d_{xz}$ orbital polarization shows up. There are three Fermi-surface sheets that seem unfavorable for nesting. Our results suggest an orbital or spin-density-wave order for the low-temperature state and, upon suppression of the competing order, emergence of superconductivity could be expected.

Neutron diffraction study on magnetic structures and transitions in Sr2Cr3As2O2

Sr2Cr3As2O2 is composed of alternating square-lattice CrO2 and Cr2As2 stacking layers, where CrO2 is isostructural to the CuO2 building-block of cuprate high-Tc superconductors and Cr2As2 to Fe2As2 of Fe-based superconductors. Current interest in this material is raised by theoretic prediction of possible superconductivity. In this neutron powder diffraction study, we discovered that magnetic moments of Cr(II) ions in the Cr2As2 sublattice develop a C-type antiferromagnetic structure below 590 K, and the moments of Cr(I) in the CrO2 sublattice form the La2CuO4 -like antiferromagnetic order below 291 K. The staggered magnetic moment 2.19(4)μ B /Cr(II) in the more itinerant Cr2As2 layer is smaller than 3.10(6)μ_B/Cr(I) in the more localized CrO2 layer. Different from previous expectation, a spin-flop transition of the Cr(II) magnetic order observed at 291 K indicates a strong coupling between the CrO2 and Cr2As2 magnetic subsystems.

Superconducting and magnetic phase diagram of RbEuFe4As4 and CsEuFe4As4 at high pressure

The recently discovered (Rb,Cs)EuFe4As4 compounds exhibit an unusual combination of superconductivity (Tc = 35 K) and ferromagnetism (Tm = 15 K). We have performed a series of x-ray diffraction, ac magnetic susceptibility, dc magnetization, and electrical resistivity measurements on both RbEuFe4As4 and CsEuFe4As4 to pressures as high as 30 GPa. We find that the superconductivity onset is suppressed monotonically by pressure while the magnetic transition is enhanced at initial rates of dTm/dP = 1.7 K/GPa and 1.5 K/GPa for RbEuFe4As4 and CsEuFe4As4, respectively. Near 7 GPa, Tc onset and Tm become comparable. At higher pressures, signatures of bulk superconductivity gradually disappear. Room temperature x-ray diffraction measurements suggest the onset of a transition from tetragonal (T) to a half collapsed-tetragonal (hcT) phase at 10 GPa (RbEuFe4As4) and 12 GPa (CsEuFe4As4). The ability to tune Tc and Tm into coincidence with relatively modest pressures highlights (Rb,Cs)EuFe4As4 compounds as ideal systems to study the interplay of superconductivity and ferromagnetism.

Peculiar Phase Diagram with Isolated Superconducting Regions in ThFeAsN$_{1-x}$O$_x$

ThFeAsN$_{1-x}$O$_x$ ($0\leq x\leq0.6$) system with heavy electron doping has been studied by the measurements of X-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat. The non-doped compound exhibits superconductivity at $T_\mathrm{c}^\mathrm{onset}=30$ K, which is possibly due to an internal uniaxial chemical pressure that is manifested by the extremely small value of As height with respect to the Fe plane. With the oxygen substitution, the $T_\mathrm{c}$ value decreases rapidly to below 2 K for $0.1\leq x\leq0.2$, and surprisingly, superconductivity re-appears in the range of $0.25\leq x\leq0.5$ with a maximum $T_\mathrm{c}^\mathrm{onset}$ of 17.5 K at $x=0.3$. For the normal-state resistivity, while the samples in intermediate non-superconducting interval exhibit Fermi liquid behavior, those in other regions show a non-Fermi-liquid behavior. The specific heat jump for the superconducting sample of $x=0.4$ is $ΔC/(γT_\mathrm{c})=0.89$, which is discussed in terms of anisotropic superconducting gap. The peculiar phase diagram in ThFeAsN$_{1-x}$O$_x$ presents additional ingredients for understanding the superconducting mechanism in iron-based superconductors.

Two-gap superconductivity with line nodes in CsCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$

We report the results of a muon-spin rotation ($μ$SR) experiment to determine the superconducting ground state of the iron-based superconductor CsCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$ with $T_{\rm c} \approx 28.3\,$K. This compound is related to the fully-gapped superconductor CaCsFe$_4$As$_4$, but here the Ca-containing spacer layer is replaced with one containing Ca$_2$F$_2$. The temperature evolution of the penetration depth strongly suggests the presence of line nodes and is best modelled by a system consisting of both an $s$- and a $d$-wave gap. We also find a potentially magnetic phase which appears below $\approx 10\,$K but does not appear to compete with the superconductivity. This compound contains the largest alkali atom in this family of superconductors and our results yield a value for the in-plane penetration depth of $λ_{ab}(T=0)=423(5)\,$nm.

Multigap superconductivity in RbCa2Fe4As4F2 investigated using muSR measurements

The superconducting properties of the recently discovered double Fe$_2$As$_2$ layered high-$T_c$ superconductor RbCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$ with $T_c\approx$ 30~K have been investigated using magnetization, heat capacity, transverse-field (TF) and zero-field (ZF) muon-spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements. Our low field magnetization measurements and heat capacity (C$_p$) reveal an onset of bulk superconductivity with $T_{\bf c}\sim$ 30.0(4) K. Furthermore, the heat capacity exhibits a jump at $T_{\bf c}$ of $Δ$C$_p$/$T_{\bf c}$=94.6 (mJ/mole-K$^2$) and no clear effect of applied magnetic fields was observed on C$_p$(T) up to 9 T between 2 K and 5 K. Our analysis of the TF-$μ$SR results shows that the temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth is better described by a two-gap model, either isotropic $s$+$s$-wave or $s$+$d$-wave than a single gap isotropic $s$-wave or $d$-wave model for the superconducting gap. The presence of two superconducting gaps in RbCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$ suggests a multiband nature of the superconductivity, which is consistent with the multigap superconductivity observed in other Fe-based superconductors, including ACa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$ (A=K and Cs). Furthermore, from our TF-$μ$SR study we have estimated an in-plane penetration depth $λ_{\mathrm{ab}}$$(0)$ =231.5(3) nm, superconducting carrier density $n_s = 7.45 \times 10^{26}~ $m$^{-3}$, and carrier's effective-mass $m^*$ = 2.45\textit{m}$_{e}$. Our ZF $μ$SR measurements do not reveal a clear sign of time reversal symmetry breaking at $T_{\bf c}$, but the temperature dependent relaxation between 150 K and 1.2 K might indicate the presence of spin-fluctuations. The results of our present study have been compared with those reported for other Fe pnictide superconductors.

RbEu(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_4$As$_4$: From a ferromagnetic superconductor to a superconducting ferromagnet

The intrinsically hole-doped RbEuFe$_4$As$_4$ exhibits bulk superconductivity at $T_{\mathrm{sc}}=36.5$ K and ferromagnetic ordering in the Eu sublattice at $T_\mathrm{m}=15$ K. Here we present a hole-compensation study by introducing extra itinerant electrons via a Ni substitution in the ferromagnetic superconductor RbEuFe$_4$As$_4$ with $T_{\mathrm{sc}}>T_{\mathrm{m}}$. With the Ni doping, $T_{\mathrm{sc}}$ decreases rapidly, and the Eu-spin ferromagnetism and its $T_{\mathrm{m}}$ remain unchanged. Consequently, the system RbEu(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_4$As$_4$ transforms into a superconducting ferromagnet with $T_{\mathrm{m}}>T_{\mathrm{sc}}$ for $0.07\leq x\leq0.08$. The occurrence of superconducting ferromagnets is attributed to the decoupling between Eu$^{2+}$ spins and superconducting Cooper pairs. The superconducting and magnetic phase diagram is established, which additionally includes a recovered yet suppressed spin-density-wave state.

A Possible Family of Ni-based High Temperature Superconductors

We suggest that a family of Ni-based compounds, which contain [Ni$_2$M$_2$O]$^{2-}$(M=chalcogen) layers with an antiperovskite structure constructed by mixed-anion Ni complexes, NiM$_4$O$_2$, can be potential high temperature superconductors upon doping or applying pressure. The layer structures have been formed in many other transitional metal compounds such as La$_2$B$_2$Se$_2$O$_3$(B=Mn, Fe,Co). For the Ni-based compounds, we predict that the parental compounds host collinear antiferromagnetic states similar to those in the iron-based high temperature superconductors. The electronic physics near Fermi energy is controlled by two e$_{g}$ d-orbitals with completely independent in-plane kinematics. We predict that the superconductivity in this family is characterized by strong competition between extended s-wave and d-wave pairing symmetries.

Evidence of Spontaneous Vortex Ground State in An Iron-Based Ferromagnetic Superconductor

Spontaneous vortex phase (SVP) is an exotic quantum matter in which quantized superconducting vortices form in the absence of external magnetic field. Although being predicted theoretically nearly 40 years ago, its rigorous experimental verification still appears to be lacking. Here we present low-field magnetic measurements on single crystals of the iron-based ferromagnetic superconductor Eu(Fe$_{0.91}$Rh$_{0.09}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ which undergoes a superconducting transition at $T_\mathrm{sc}$ = 19.6 K followed by a magnetic transition at $T_\mathrm{m}$ = 16.8 K. We observe a characteristic first-order transition from a Meissner state within $T_\mathrm{m}<T<T_\mathrm{sc}$ to an SVP below $T_\mathrm{m}$, under a magnetic field approaching zero. Additional isothermal magnetization and ac magnetization measurements at $T\ll T_\mathrm{sc}$ confirm that the system is intrinsically in a spontaneous-vortex ground state. The unambiguous demonstration of SVP in the title material lays a solid foundation for future imaging and spectroscopic studies on this intriguing quantum matter.

Multigap superconductivity in ThAsFeN investigated using muSR measurements

We have investigated the superconducting ground state of the newly discovered superconductor ThFeAsN with a tetragonal layered crystal structure using resistivity, magnetization, heat capacity and transverse-field (TF) muon-spin rotation ($μ$SR) measurements. Our resistivity and magnetization measurements reveal an onset of bulk superconductivity with $T_{\bf c}\sim$ 30 K. The heat capacity results show a very small anomaly, $Δ$C$_{ele}$$\sim$0.214 (J/mol-K) at $T_{\bf c}\sim$ 30 K and exhibits exponential behavior below $T_{\bf c}$, which fits better to two superconducting gaps rather than a single gap. Further a nonlinear magnetic field dependence of the electronic specific heat coefficient $γ$(H) has been found in the low temperature limit, which indicates that the smaller energy gap is nodal. Our analysis of the TF-$μ$SR results shows that the temperature dependence of the superfluid density is better described by a two-gap model either isotropic $s$+$s$-wave or $s$+$d$-wave than a single gap isotropic $s$-wave model for the superconducting gap, consistent with other Fe-based superconductors. The combine $γ$(H) and TF-$μ$SR results confirm $s$+$d$-wave model for the gap structure of ThFeAsN. The observation of two gaps in ThFeAsN suggests multiband nature of the superconductivity possibly arising from the d-bands of Fe ions. Furthermore, from our TF-$μ$SR study we have estimated the magnetic penetration depth, in the polycrystalline sample, of $λ_{\mathrm{L}}$$(0)$ = 375 nm, superconducting carrier density $n_s = 4.6 \times 10^{27}~ $m$^{-3}$, and carrier's effective-mass $m^*$ = 2.205\textit{m}$_{e}$. We will compare the results of our present study with those reported for the Fe-pnictide family of superconductors.

Superconductivity at 33 - 37 K in $ALn_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$O$_2$ ($A$ = K and Cs; $Ln$ = Lanthanides)

We have synthesized 10 new iron oxyarsenides, K$Ln_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$O$_2$ ($Ln$ = Gd, Tb, Dy, and Ho) and Cs$Ln_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$O$_2$ ($Ln$ = Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, and Ho), with the aid of lattice-match [between $A$Fe$_2$As$_2$ ($A$ = K and Cs) and $Ln$FeAsO] approach. The resultant compounds possess hole-doped conducting double FeAs layers, [$A$Fe$_4$As$_4$]$^{2-}$, that are separated by the insulating [$Ln_2$O$_2$]$^{2+}$ slabs. Measurements of electrical resistivity and dc magnetic susceptibility demonstrate bulk superconductivity at $T_\mathrm{c}$ = 33 - 37 K. We find that $T_\mathrm{c}$ correlates with the axis ratio $c/a$ for all 12442-type superconductors discovered. Also, $T_\mathrm{c}$ tends to increase with the lattice mismatch, implying a role of lattice instability for the enhancement of superconductivity.

Crystal Structure and Superconductivity at about 30 K in $A$Ca$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$ ($A$ = Rb, Cs)

We have synthesized two iron fluo-arsenides $A$Ca$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$ with $A$ = Rb and Cs, analogous to the newly discovered superconductor KCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$. The quinary inorganic compounds crystallize in a body-centered tetragonal lattice with space group I4/mmm, which contain double Fe$_2$As$_2$ layers that are separated by insulating Ca$_2$F$_2$ layers. Our electrical and magnetic measurements on the polycrystalline samples demonstrate that the new materials undergo superconducting transitions at Tc = 30.5 K and 28.2 K, respectively, without extrinsic doping. The correlations between Tc and structural parameters are discussed.

Synthesis, crystal structure and superconductivity in Rb$Ln_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$O$_2$ ($Ln$ = Sm, Tb, Dy and Ho)

We have synthesized four iron-based oxyarsenide superconductors Rb$Ln_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$O$_2$ ($Ln$ = Sm, Tb, Dy and Ho) resulting from the intergrowth of RbFe$_2$As$_2$ and $Ln$FeAsO. It is found that the lattice match between RbFe$_2$As$_2$ and $Ln$FeAsO is crucial for the phase formation. The structural intergrowth leads to double asymmetric Fe$_2$As$_2$ layers that are separated by insulating $Ln_2$O$_2$ slabs. Consequently, the materials are intrinsically doped at a level of 0.25 holes/Fe-atom and, bulk superconductivity emerges at $T_\mathrm{c}$ = 35.8, 34.7, 34.3 and 33.8 K, respectively, for $Ln$ = Sm, Tb, Dy and Ho. Investigation on the correlation between crystal structure and $T_\mathrm{c}$ suggests that interlayer couplings may play an additional role for optimization of superconductivity.
