Isospin effect on quark matter instabilities

We have studied the mechanical and chemical instabilities as well as the liquid-gas-like phase transition in isospin asymmetric quark matter based on the NJL and the pNJL model. Areas of the mechanical instability region and the liquid-gas coexistence region are seen to be enlarged with a larger quark matter symmetry energy or in the presence of strange quarks. Our study shows that the light cluster yield ratio observed in relativistic heavy-ion collisions may not be affected much by the uncertainties of the isospin effect, and favors a smooth hadron-quark phase transition in compact stars as well as their mergers.

3-dimensional QCD phase diagram with pion condensate in the NJL model

With the isovector coupling constants adjusted to reproduce the physical pion mass and lattice QCD results in baryon-free quark matter, we have carried out rigourous calculations for the pion condensate in the 3-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model, and studied the 3-dimensional QCD phase diagram. With the increasing isospin chemical potential $μ_I$, we have observed two nonzero solutions of the pion condensate at finite baryon chemical potentials $μ_B$, representing respectively the pion superfluid phase and the Sarma phase, and their appearance and disappearance correspond to a second-order (first-order) phase transition at higher (lower) temperatures $T$ and lower (higher) $μ_B$. Calculations by assuming equal constituent mass of $u$ and $d$ quarks would lead to large errors of the QCD phase diagram within $μ_B \in (500, 900)$ MeV, and affect the position of the critical end point.

Quark condensate and chiral symmetry restoration in neutron stars

Based on an equivparticle model, we investigate the in-medium quark condensate in neutron stars. Carrying out a Taylor expansion of the nuclear binding energy to the order of $ρ^3$, we obtain a series of EOSs for neutron star matter, which are confronted with the latest nuclear and astrophysical constraints. The in-medium quark condensate is then extracted from the constrained properties of neutron star matter, which decreases non-linearly with density. However, the chiral symmetry is only partially restored with non-vanishing quark condensates, which may vanish at a density that is out of reach for neutron stars.

Photoproduction $γp \to K^{*+} Λ$ in a Reggeized model

The high-precision differential cross-section data for the reaction $γp \to K^{*+}Λ$ are reanalyzed within a Regge-inspired effective Lagrangian approach. The model adopts Regge phenomenology to constrain the $t$-channel contributions from the $κ$, $K$, and $K^*$ exchanges. A minimal number of resonances in the $s$ channel are introduced in constructing the reaction amplitudes in order to describe the data. It is shown that the differential cross-section data for $γp \to K^{*+}Λ$ can be satisfactorily described by introducing the only $N(2060){5/2}^-$ resonance in the $s$ channel, which is quite different from our earlier work performed in an effective Lagrangian approach [A. C. Wang {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. C 96, 035206 (2017)], where the amplitudes are computed by evaluating Feynman diagrams and it is found that introducing at least one additional resonance apart from the $N(2060){5/2}^-$ is indispensable for reproducing the data. The roles of individual contributions from meson and baryon exchanges on the angular distributions are found to be highly model dependent. The extracted mass of $N(2060){5/2}^-$ turns out to be well determined, independent of how the $t$-channel amplitudes are constructed, whereas the width does not.

Interface effects of strange quark matter with density dependent quark masses

We study the interface effects in strangelets adopting mean-field approximation (MFA). Based on an equivparticle model, the linear confinement and leading-order perturbative interactions are included with density-dependent quark masses. By increasing the confinement strength, the surface tension and curvature term of strange quark matter (SQM) become larger, while the perturbative interaction does the opposite. For those parameters constrained according to the 2$M_\odot$ strange star, the surface tension is $\sim$2.4 MeV/fm${}^2$, while unstable SQM indicates a slightly larger surface tension. The obtained results are then compared with those predicted by the multiple reflection expansion (MRE) method. In contrast to the bag model case, it is found that MRE method overestimates the surface tension and underestimates the curvature term. To reproduce our results, the density of states in the MRE approach should be modified by proper damping factors.

A Stronger Multi-observable Uncertainty Relation

Uncertainty relation lies at the heart of quantum mechanics, characterizing the incompatibility of non-commuting observables in the preparation of quantum states. An important question is how to improve the lower bound of uncertainty relation. Here we present a variance-based sum uncertainty relation for $N$ incompatible observables stronger than the simple generalization of the uncertainty relation for two observables derived by Maccone and Pati [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf113}, 260401 (2014)]. Further comparisons of our uncertainty relation with other related ones for spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ and spin-$1$ particles indicate that the obtained uncertainty relation gives a better lower bound.

Magnetized quark matter with a magnetic-field dependent coupling

It was recently derived that the QCD running coupling is a function of the magnetic field strength under the strong magnetic field approximation. Inspired by this progress and based on the self-consistent solutions of gap equations, the properties of two-flavor and three-flavor quark matter are studied in the framework of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with a magnetic-field dependent running coupling. We find that the dynamical quark masses as functions of the magnetic field strength are not monotonous in the fully chirally broken phase. Furthermore, the stability of magnetized quark matter with the running coupling is enhanced by lowering the free energy per baryon, which is expected to be more stable than that of the conventional constant coupling case. It is concluded that the magnetized strange quark matter described by running coupling can be absolutely stable.

From strangelets to strange stars: A unified description

The conventionally separated treatments for strangelets and strange stars are now unified with a more comprehensive theoretical description for objects ranging from strangelets to strange stars. After constraining the model parameter according to the Witten-Bodmer hypothesis and observational mass-radius probability distribution of pulsars, we investigate the properties of this kind of objects. It is found that the energy per baryon decreases monotonously for increasing baryon number and reaches its minimum at the maximum baryon number, corresponding to the most massive strange star. Due to the quark depletion, an electric potential well for negatively charged particles is formed on the surface of the quark part, which may provide some unique observables. For a rotational bare strange star, a magnetic field with the typical strength of pulsars is generated.

Magnetized strange quark matter in a quasiparticle description

The quasiparticle model is extended to investigate the properties of strange quark matter in a strong magnetic field at finite densities. For the density-dependent quark mass, self-consistent thermodynamic treatment is obtained with an additional effective bag parameter, which depends not only on the density but also on the magnetic field strength. The magnetic field makes strange quark matter more stable energetically when the magnetic field strength is less than a critical value of the order $10^7$ Gauss depending on the QCD scale $Λ$. Instead of being a monotonic function of the density for the QCD scale parameter $Λ>126$ MeV, the effective bag function has a maximum near $0.3\sim 0.4$ fm$^{-3}$. The influence of the magnetic field and the QCD scale parameter on the stiffness of the equation of state of the magnetized strange quark matter and the possible maximum mass of strange stars are discussed
