HE-SLAM: a Stereo SLAM System Based on Histogram Equalization and ORB Features

In the real-life environments, due to the sudden appearance of windows, lights, and objects blocking the light source, the visual SLAM system can easily capture the low-contrast images caused by over-exposure or over-darkness. At this time, the direct method of estimating camera motion based on pixel luminance information is infeasible, and it is often difficult to find enough valid feature points without image processing. This paper proposed HE-SLAM, a new method combining histogram equalization and ORB feature extraction, which can be robust in more scenes, especially in stages with low-contrast images. Because HE-SLAM uses histogram equalization to improve the contrast of images, it can extract enough valid feature points in low-contrast images for subsequent feature matching, keyframe selection, bundle adjustment, and loop closure detection. The proposed HE-SLAM has been tested on the popular datasets (such as KITTI and EuRoc), and the real-time performance and robustness of the system are demonstrated by comparing system runtime and the mean square root error (RMSE) of absolute trajectory error (ATE) with state-of-the-art methods like ORB-SLAM2.

Region based Ensemble Learning Network for Fine-grained Classification

As an important research topic in computer vision, fine-grained classification which aims to recognition subordinate-level categories has attracted significant attention. We propose a novel region based ensemble learning network for fine-grained classification. Our approach contains a detection module and a module for classification. The detection module is based on the faster R-CNN framework to locate the semantic regions of the object. The classification module using an ensemble learning method, which trains a set of sub-classifiers for different semantic regions and combines them together to get a stronger classifier. In the evaluation, we implement experiments on the CUB-2011 dataset and the result of experiments proves our method s efficient for fine-grained classification. We also extend our approach to remote scene recognition and evaluate it on the NWPU-RESISC45 dataset.

Stacking control in graphene-based materials: a promising way for fascinating physical properties

Graphene, defined as a single atomic plane of graphite, is a semimetal with small overlap between the valence and the conduction bands. The stacking of graphene up to several atomic layers can produce diverse physical properties, depending on the stacking way. The bilayer graphene is also a semimetal, adopting the AB-stacked (or Bernal-stacked) structure or the rare AA-stacked structure. The trilayer or a few layer graphene (FLG) can be semimetal or semiconductor, depending on whether it takes Bernal (ABA) stacking or rhombohedral (ABC) stacking. We will give a perspective on the recent two mild approaches to control the stacking via local transition from ABC stacking into ABA stacking. It is believed that with the rapid development of graphene-based materials, these techniques for stacking control can be used for more complex structure to fulfill fascinating properties and devices.

Design of Face Centered Cubic Co81.8Si9.1B9.1 with High Magnetocrystalline Anisotropy

Despite the composition close to glassy forming alloys, face centered cubic (FCC) Co81.8Si9.1B9.1, designed based on Co9B atomic cluster (polyhedral), are synthesized as singlephase ribbons successfully. These ribbons, with grain sizes of ca. 92 nm, show supreme ductility and strong orientation along (111), which couples with shape anisotropy leading to high magnetocrystalline anisotropy comparable to Co rich Co-Pt nanoscale thin films, with a coercivity of 430 Oe and squareness of 0.82 at room temperature. The stability and magnetic behaviors of the phase are discussed based on experimental electronic structure. This work not only develops low cost Co-based materials for hard magnetic applications, but also extends the atomic cluster model developed for amorphous alloys into the design of new crystalline materials.

Graphene based functional devices: A short review

Graphene is an ideal 2D material system bridging electronic and photonic devices. It also breaks the fundamental speed and size limits by electronics and photonics, respectively. Graphene offers multiple functions of signal transmission, emission, modulation, and detection in a broad band, high speed, compact size, and low loss. Here, we have a brief view of graphene based functional devices at microwave, terahertz, and optical frequencies. Their fundamental physics and computational models were discussed as well.

3D Nanoporous Gold with Very Low Parting Limit Derived from Au-based Metallic Glass and Enhanced Methanol Electro-oxidation Catalytic Performance

Nanoporous gold (NPG) with bi-continuous ligaments and pores structure has promising potential in functional applications, among which one prominent example is fuel cell electrocatalyst. However, current application of NPG is mostly limited to methanol electro-oxidation due to its weak catalytic performance. Here we report a simple chemical dealloying process, for generating peculiar three-dimensional (3D) free-standing NPG with high specific surface area associated with a novel porous cone shaped protrusion morphology. This NPG structure possesses the highest specific activity of catalytic performance reported NPG catalysts so far.

New Family of Quantum Spin Hall Insulators in Two-dimensional Transition-Metal Halide with Large Nontrivial Band Gaps

Topological insulators (TIs) are promising for achieving dissipationless transport devices due to the robust gapless states inside the insulating bulk gap. However, currently realized 2D TIs, quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulators, suffer from ultra-high vacuum and extremely low temperature. Thus, seeking for desirable QSH insulators with high feasibility of experimental preparation and large nontrivial gap is of great importance for wide applications in spintronics. Based on the first-principles calculations, we predict a novel family of two-dimensional (2D) QSH insulators in transition-metal halide MX (M = Zr, Hf; X = Cl, Br, and I) monolayers with large nontrivial gaps of 0.12$-$0.4 eV, comparable with bismuth (111) bilayer (0.2 eV), stanene (0.3 eV) and larger than ZrTe$_5$ (0.1 eV) monolayers and graphene-based sandwiched heterstructures (30$-$70 meV). Their corresponding 3D bulk materials are weak topological insulators from stacking QSH layers, and some of bulk compounds have already been synthesized in experiment. The mechanism for 2D QSH effect in this system originates from a novel d$-$d band inversion, which is different from conventional band inversion between s$-$s orbitals, or p$-$p orbitals. The realization of pure layered MX monolayers may be prepared by exfoliation from their 3D bulk phases, thus holding great promise for nanoscale device applications and stimulating further efforts on transition metal-based QSH materials.

Prediction of Near-Room-Temperature Quantum Anomalous Hall Effect on Honeycomb Materials

Recently, this long-sought quantum anomalous Hall effect was realized in the magnetic topological insulator. However, the requirement of an extremely low temperature (approximately 30 mK) hinders realistic applications. Based on \textit{ab-initio} band structure calculations, we propose a quantum anomalous Hall platform with a large energy gap of 0.34 and 0.06 eV on honeycomb lattices comprised of Sn and Ge, respectively. The ferromagnetic order forms in one sublattice of the honeycomb structure by controlling the surface functionalization rather than dilute magnetic doping, which is expected to be visualized by spin polarized STM in experiment. Strong coupling between the inherent QSH state and ferromagnetism results in considerable exchange splitting and consequently an FM insulator with a large energy gap. The estimated mean-field Curie temperature is 243 and 509 K for Sn and Ge lattices, respectively. The large energy gap and high Curie temperature indicate the feasibility of the QAH effect in the near-room-temperature and even room-temperature regions.

Modeling an Electrically Driven Graphene-Nanoribbon Laser for Optical Interconnects

Graphene has two very important optical properties of population inversion of electrons, and broadband optical gain. As a result, graphene has potential for use in lasers and amplifiers. In this work, we presented a quantum master model and analyzed the properties for the electrically pumped single-AGNR vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) to investigate the lasing action and laser properties for realistic experimental parameters. A semiclassical approximation for the output power and laser linewidth is also derived. The laser threshold power was several orders of magnitude lower than that currently achievable with semiconductor microlasers. Our results have demonstrated that a single-AGNR VCSEL can serve as a nanolaser with ultralow lasing threshold. Implementation of such a GNR-based VCSEL is especially promising for optical interconnection systems since VCSELs emit low optical power and single longitudinal mode over a wide wavelength spectral range through tailoring GNRs.

Critical components in 0.14 THz communication systems

In the super-heterodyne terahertz communication system, the proper design of the critical components like mixers and filters are of great importance for enhancing its performance. In this work, some issues on our newly developed system setup design for 0.14 THz wireless communications and the key components subharmonic mixer (SHM) based on Schottky diode, as well as silicon micromachined bandpass rectangular waveguide filters are presented. According to ADS simulation, the optimum conversion loss of the 140 GHz SHM is around 8.2 dB. And the silicon-micromachined rectangular waveguide filters have been fabricated and the measured lowset insertion losses are lower than 0.5 dB.

Vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting lasers and quantum dot lasers

The use of cavity to manipulate photon emission of quantum dots (QDs) has been opening unprecedented opportunities for realizing quantum functional nanophotonic devices and also quantum information devices. In particular, in the field of semiconductor lasers, QDs were introduced as a superior alternative to quantum wells to suppress the temperature dependence of the threshold current in vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VECSELs). In this work, a review of properties and development of semiconductor VECSEL devices and QD laser devices is given. Based on the features of VECSEL devices, the main emphasis is put on the recent development of technological approach on semiconductor QD VECSELs. Then, from the viewpoint of both single QD nanolaser and cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED), a single-QD-cavity system resulting from the strong coupling of QD cavity is presented. A difference of this review from the other existing works on semiconductor VECSEL devices is that we will cover both the fundamental aspects and technological approaches of QD VECSEL devices. And lastly, the presented review here has provided a deep insight into useful guideline for the development of QD VECSEL technology and future quantum functional nanophotonic devices and monolithic photonic integrated circuits (MPhICs).

Photon properties of single graphene nanoribbon microcavity laser

In this work, I propose a scheme about a single graphene nanoribbon (GNR) emitter in a microcavity, and focus on a fully-quantum-mechanical treatment model with the excitonic interaction included to investigate the photon properties and lasing action. When the single armchair-edged GNRs (AGNRs) microcavity system is pumped, the exciton-photon coupling provides more photons and enhances the photon emission process, making it essentially a lasing object. The theoretical results demonstrated that single AGNR in a semiconductor microcavity system maybe serve as a nanolaser with ultralow lasing threshold.
