SlimPer: Make Personalization Model Slim and Smart

Transformer-style architectures are increasingly adopted for industrial recommendation systems, yet they inherit a design premise misaligned with the task: generative models rely on per-token autoregressive prediction, which justifies maintaining large intermediate tensors that scale with sequence length. In contrast, recommendation systems produce a single set of relevance scores for each pair without token-level supervision. Leveraging this observation, we propose SlimPer, which reformulates personalized ranking as iterative refinement of a compact, unified knowledge base. At each layer, the model selectively queries raw multi-modal user-side tokens, computes explicit relevance matching scores, and refines the knowledge base, all in O(N) per-layer cost with a fixed-size intermediate representation. As a result, model depth is decoupled from user history length, enabling deeper relevance understanding without proportional growth in compute or memory; request-only optimization further trims memory by sharing a single copy of user-side tokens across all candidate items. SlimPer unifies sparse, dense, and sequence features within a single backbone and provides inherent interpretability through its attention mechanism. Deployed on Instagram Reels and Feed, SlimPer yields measurable improvements in user engagement while streamlining the overall system and enabling effective modeling of 10k+ fine-grained user history events.

DUEL: Adversarial Self-Play for Multimodal Reasoning

Reinforcement learning (RL) has emerged as an effective paradigm for improving the reasoning capability of vision-language models (VLMs). However, RL-based optimization typically depends on costly high-quality annotations that are difficult to scale. Existing unsupervised alternatives may drift toward biased solutions due to weak visual grounding and the lack of reliable verification signals. We propose a self-evolving post-training framework, DUEL, where supervision emerges from adversarial interactions between two policies initialized from the same pretrained VLM. A Challenger generates an image-grounded true claim together with a minimally perturbed hard-negative counterpart, while a Solver verifies both claims against the image, encouraging fine-grained visual discrimination under near-neighbor semantics. To stabilize optimization, we introduce a length-normalized log-likelihood reward that preserves informative optimization signals beyond binary outcome supervision and improves learning stability under sparse feedback. Experiments show that DUEL consistently improves visual reasoning and robust discrimination without additional human annotations, external reward models, or image editing tools.

Integrity and Junkiness Failure Handling for Embedding-based Retrieval: A Case Study in Social Network Search

Embedding based retrieval has seen its usage in a variety of search applications like e-commerce, social networking search etc. While the approach has demonstrated its efficacy in tasks like semantic matching and contextual search, it is plagued by the problem of uncontrollable relevance. In this paper, we conduct an analysis of embedding-based retrieval launched in early 2021 on our social network search engine, and define two main categories of failures introduced by it, integrity and junkiness. The former refers to issues such as hate speech and offensive content that can severely harm user experience, while the latter includes irrelevant results like fuzzy text matching or language mismatches. Efficient methods during model inference are further proposed to resolve the issue, including indexing treatments and targeted user cohort treatments, etc. Though being simple, we show the methods have good offline NDCG and online A/B tests metrics gain in practice. We analyze the reasons for the improvements, pointing out that our methods are only preliminary attempts to this important but challenging problem. We put forward potential future directions to explore.
