Enhanced ODMA for Massive Sparse Access: Hybrid Data-Frozen Bit Transmission and Fixed-Point Analysis over Block Fading Channels

This paper proposes a novel on-off division multiple access (ODMA) transmission scheme that enables efficient joint multi-user channel estimation and iterative decoding by inserting a small number of frozen symbols into the codewords. Functionally analogous to pilots, these symbols are sparsely distributed within the codeword. Unlike conventional pilot-based methods, our approach requires only a minimal number of frozen symbols (e.g., $5\sim20$ symbols per user in a 300-user system), which serve dual purposes as both estimation references and decoding aids. By employing low-complexity single-user channel estimation and decoding, combined with simple iterative interference cancellation, the scheme achieves performance equivalent to that with perfectly known user channels, even when accounting for the additional energy and bandwidth costs of the frozen symbols. Furthermore, for the large-scale ODMA sparse multiple access system, this paper proposes a fixed-point analysis method, which can accurately estimate the iterative convergence performance over multi-user block fading channels by only leveraging the decoding functions under the single-user AWGN channel. This method is applicable to performance analysis for arbitrary code lengths, code rates, and decoding algorithms. It eliminates the need for extensive Monte Carlo simulation time, and provides an efficient tool for the design of multi-user codes.

Outer Channel of DNA-Based Data Storage: Capacity and Efficient Coding Schemes

In this paper, we consider the outer channel for DNA-based data storage. When transmitting over the outer channel, each DNA string is treated as a unit/symbol that would be either correctly received, or erased, or corrupted by uniformly distributed random symbol substitution errors, and all strings are randomly shuffled with each other. We first derive the capacity of the outer channel, which implies that the uniformly distributed random symbol substitution errors are only as harmful as the erasure errors (for infinite-length non-binary random linear codes with near maximum likelihood decoding). Next, we propose practically efficient coding schemes which encode the bits at the same position of different strings into a codeword. We compute the soft/hard information of each bit, which allows us to independently decode the bits within a codeword, leading to an independent decoding scheme. To improve the decoding performance, we measure the reliability of each string based on the independent decoding result, and perform a further step of decoding over the most reliable strings, leading to a joint decoding scheme. Simulations with low-density parity-check codes confirm that the joint decoding scheme can reduce the frame error rate by more than 3 orders of magnitude compared to the independent decoding scheme, and it can outperform the state-of-the-art decoding scheme in the literature across a wide range of parameter regions.

Mixture of Weight-shared Heterogeneous Group Attention Experts for Dynamic Token-wise KV Optimization

Transformer models face scalability challenges in causal language modeling (CLM) due to inefficient memory allocation for growing key-value (KV) caches, which strains compute and storage resources. Existing methods like Grouped Query Attention (GQA) and token-level KV optimization improve efficiency but rely on rigid resource allocation, often discarding "low-priority" tokens or statically grouping them, failing to address the dynamic spectrum of token importance. We propose mixSGA, a novel mixture-of-expert (MoE) approach that dynamically optimizes token-wise computation and memory allocation. Unlike prior approaches, mixSGA retains all tokens while adaptively routing them to specialized experts with varying KV group sizes, balancing granularity and efficiency. Our key novelties include: (1) a token-wise expert-choice routing mechanism guided by learned importance scores, enabling proportional resource allocation without token discard; (2) weight-sharing across grouped attention projections to minimize parameter overhead; and (3) an auxiliary loss to ensure one-hot routing decisions for training-inference consistency in CLMs. Extensive evaluations across Llama3, TinyLlama, OPT, and Gemma2 model families show mixSGA's superiority over static baselines. On instruction-following and continued pretraining tasks, mixSGA achieves higher ROUGE-L and lower perplexity under the same KV budgets.

Performance Analysis and Code Design for Resistive Random-Access Memory Using Channel Decomposition Approach

A novel framework for performance analysis and code design is proposed to address the sneak path (SP) problem in resistive random-access memory (ReRAM) arrays. The main idea is to decompose the ReRAM channel, which is both non-ergodic and data-dependent, into multiple stationary memoryless channels. A finite-length performance bound is derived by analyzing the capacity and dispersion of these stationary memoryless channels. Furthermore, leveraging this channel decomposition, a practical sparse-graph code design is proposed using density evolution. The obtained channel codes are not only asymptotic capacity approaching but also close to the derived finite-length performance bound.

Constrained Coding and Deep Learning Aided Threshold Detection for Resistive Memories

Resistive random access memory (ReRAM) is a promising emerging non-volatile memory (NVM) technology that shows high potential for both data storage and computing. However, its crossbar array architecture leads to the sneak path problem, which may severely degrade the reliability of data stored in the ReRAM cell. Due to the complication of memory physics and unique features of the sneak path induced interference (SPI), it is difficult to derive an accurate channel model for it. The deep learning (DL)-based detection scheme \cite{zhong2020sneakdl} can better mitigate the SPI, at the cost of additional power consumption and read latency. In this letter, we first propose a novel CC scheme which can not only reduce the SPI in the memory array, but also effectively differentiate the memory arrays into two categories of sneak-path-free and sneak-path-affected arrays. For the sneak-path-free arrays, we can use a simple middle-point threshold detector to detect the low and high resistance cells of ReRAM. For the sneak-path-affected arrays, a DL detector is first trained off-line (prior to the data detection of ReRAM). To avoid the additional power consumption and latency introduced by the DL detector, we further propose a DL-based threshold detector, whose detection threshold can be derived based on the outputs of the DL detector. It is then utilized for the online data detection of all the identified sneak-path-affected arrays. Simulation results demonstrate that the above CC and DL aided threshold detection scheme can effectively mitigate the SPI of the ReRAM array and achieve better error rate performance than the prior art detection schemes, without the prior knowledge of the channel.

Sneak Path Interference-Aware Adaptive Detection and Decoding for Resistive Memory Arrays

Resistive random-access memory (ReRAM) is an emerging non-volatile memory technology for high-density and high-speed data storage. However, the sneak path interference (SPI) occurred in the ReRAM crossbar array seriously affects its data recovery performance. In this letter, we first propose a quantized channel model of ReRAM, based on which we design both the one-bit and multi-bit channel quantizers by maximizing the mutual information of the channel. A key channel parameter that affects the quantizer design is the sneak path occurrence probability (SPOP) of the memory cell. We first use the average SPOP calculated statistically to design the quantizer, which leads to the same channel detector for different memory arrays. We then adopt the SPOP estimated separately for each memory array for the quantizer design, which is generated by an effective channel estimator and through an iterative detection and decoding scheme for the ReRAM channel. This results in an array-level SPI-aware adaptive detection and decoding approach. Moreover, since there is a strong correlation of the SPI that affects memory cells in the same rows/columns than that affecting cells in different rows/columns, we further derive a column-level scheme which outperforms the array-level scheme. We also propose a channel decomposition method that enables effective ways for theoretically analyzing the ReRAM channel. Simulation results show that the proposed SPI-aware adaptive detection and decoding schemes can approach the ideal performance with three quantization bits, with only one decoding iteration.

Maximum Achievable Rate of Resistive Random-Access Memory Channels by Mutual Information Spectrum Analysis

The maximum achievable rate is derived for resistive random-access memory (ReRAM) channel with sneak path interference. Based on the mutual information spectrum analysis, the maximum achievable rate of ReRAM channel with independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) binary inputs is derived as an explicit function of channel parameters such as the distribution of cell selector failures and channel noise level. Due to the randomness of cell selector failures, the ReRAM channel demonstrates multi-status characteristic. For each status, it is shown that as the array size is large, the fraction of cells affected by sneak paths approaches a constant value. Therefore, the mutual information spectrum of the ReRAM channel is formulated as a mixture of multiple stationary channels. Maximum achievable rates of the ReRAM channel with different settings, such as single- and across-array codings, with and without data shaping, and optimal and treating-interference-as-noise (TIN) decodings, are compared. These results provide valuable insights on the code design for ReRAM.

Union Bound Analysis for Spin-Torque Transfer Magnetic Random Access Memory (STT-MRAM) With Channel Quantization

As an emerging non-volatile memory (NVM) technology, spin-torque transfer magnetic random access memory (STT-MRAM) has received great attention in recent years since it combines the features of low switching energy, fast write/read speed, and high scalability. However, process variation and thermal fluctuation severely affect the data integrity of STT-MRAM, resulting in both write errors and read errors. Therefore, effective error correction codes (ECCs) are necessary for correcting memory cell errors. Meanwhile, the design of channel quantizer plays a critical role in supporting error correction coding for STT-MRAM. In this work, we propose a union bound analysis which can accurately predict the word error rates (WERs) of ECCs with maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding over the quantized STT-MRAM channel. The derived bound provides a theoretical tool for comparing the performance of ECCs with different quantization schemes at very low error rate levels without resorting to lengthy computer simulations. Moreover, we also propose a new criterion to design the channel quantizer by minimizing the WERs of ECC decoding that are obtained from the union bound analysis. Numerical results show that the proposed union-bound-optimized (UBO) quantizer can achieve better error rate performance than the state-of-art quantizers for STT-MRAM.

Deep-Learning-Based Adaptive Error-Correction Decoding for Spin-Torque Transfer Magnetic Random Access Memory (STT-MRAM)

Spin-torque transfer magnetic random access memory (STT-MRAM) is a promising emerging non-volatile memory (NVM) technology with wide applications. However, the data recovery of STT-MRAM is affected by the diversity of channel raw bit error rate (BER) across different dies caused by process variations, as well as the unknown resistance offset due to temperature change. Therefore, it is critical to develop effective decoding algorithms of error correction codes (ECCs) for STT-MRAM. In this article, we first propose a neural bit-flipping (BF) decoding algorithm, which can share the same trellis representation as the state-of-the-art neural decoding algorithms, such as the neural belief propagation (NBP) and neural offset min-sum (NOMS) algorithm. Hence, a neural network (NN) decoder with a uniform architecture but different NN parameters can realize all these neural decoding algorithms. Based on such a unified NN decoder architecture, we further propose a novel deep-learning (DL)-based adaptive decoding algorithm whose decoding complexity can be adjusted according to the change of the channel conditions of STT-MRAM. Extensive experimental evaluation results demonstrate that the proposed neural decoders can greatly improve the performance over the standard decoders, with similar decoding latency and energy consumption. Moreover, the DL-based adaptive decoder can work well over different channel conditions of STT-MRAM irrespective of the unknown resistance offset, with a 50% reduction of the decoding latency and energy consumption compared to the fixed decoder.

Asynchronous Grant-Free Random Access: Receiver Design with Partially Uni-Directional Message Passing and Interference Suppression Analysis

Massive Machine-Type Communications (mMTC) features a massive number of low-cost user equipments (UEs) with sparse activity. Tailor-made for these features, grant-free random access (GF-RA) serves as an efficient access solution for mMTC. However, most existing GF-RA schemes rely on strict synchronization, which incurs excessive coordination burden for the low-cost UEs. In this work, we propose a receiver design for asynchronous GF-RA, and address the joint user activity detection (UAD) and channel estimation (CE) problem in the presence of asynchronization-induced inter-symbol interference. Specifically, the delay profile is exploited at the receiver to distinguish different UEs. However, a sample correlation problem in this receiver design impedes the factorization of the joint likelihood function, which complicates the UAD and CE problem. To address this correlation problem, we design a partially uni-directional (PUD) factor graph representation for the joint likelihood function. Building on this PUD factor graph, we further propose a PUD message passing based sparse Bayesian learning (SBL) algorithm for asynchronous UAD and CE (PUDMP-SBL-aUADCE). Our theoretical analysis shows that the PUDMP-SBL-aUADCE algorithm exhibits higher signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio (SINR) in the asynchronous case than in the synchronous case, i.e., the proposed receiver design can exploit asynchronization to suppress multi-user interference. In addition, considering potential timing error from the low-cost UEs, we investigate the impacts of imperfect delay profile, and reveal the advantages of adopting the SBL method in this case. Finally, extensive simulation results are provided to demonstrate the performance of the PUDMP-SBL-aUADCE algorithm.

Capacity Optimal Generalized Multi-User MIMO: A Theoretical and Practical Framework

Conventional multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) mainly focused on Gaussian signaling, independent and identically distributed (IID) channels, and a limited number of users. It will be laborious to cope with the heterogeneous requirements in next-generation wireless communications, such as various transmission data, complicated communication scenarios, and massive user access. Therefore, this paper studies a generalized MU-MIMO (GMU-MIMO) system with more practical constraints, i.e., non-Gaussian signaling, non-IID channel, and massive users and antennas. These generalized assumptions bring new challenges in theory and practice. For example, there is no accurate capacity analysis for GMU-MIMO. In addition, it is unclear how to achieve the capacity optimal performance with practical complexity. To address these challenges, a unified framework is proposed to derive the GMU-MIMO capacity and design a capacity optimal transceiver, which jointly considers encoding, modulation, detection, and decoding. Group asymmetry is developed to make a tradeoff between user rate allocation and implementation complexity. Specifically, the capacity region of group asymmetric GMU-MIMO is characterized by using the celebrated mutual information and minimum mean-square error (MMSE) lemma and the MMSE optimality of orthogonal approximate message passing (OAMP)/vector AMP (VAMP). Furthermore, a theoretically optimal multi-user OAMP/VAMP receiver and practical multi-user low-density parity-check (MU-LDPC) codes are proposed to achieve the capacity region of group asymmetric GMU-MIMO. Numerical results verify that the gaps between theoretical detection thresholds of the proposed framework with optimized MU-LDPC codes and QPSK modulation and the sum capacity of GMU-MIMO are about 0.2 dB. Moreover, their finite-length performances are about 1~2 dB away from the associated sum capacity.

Capacity Optimal Coded Generalized MU-MIMO

With the complication of future communication scenarios, most conventional signal processing technologies of multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) become unreliable, which are designed based on ideal assumptions, such as Gaussian signaling and independent identically distributed (IID) channel matrices. As a result, this paper considers a generalized MU-MIMO (GMU-MIMO) system with more general assumptions, i.e., arbitrarily fixed input distributions, and general unitarily-invariant channel matrices. However, there is still no accurate capacity analysis and capacity optimal transceiver with practical complexity for GMU-MIMO under the constraint of coding. To address these issues, inspired by the replica method, the constrained sum capacity of coded GMU-MIMO with fixed input distribution is calculated by using the celebrated mutual information and minimum mean-square error (MMSE) lemma and the MMSE optimality of orthogonal/vector approximate message passing (OAMP/VAMP). Then, a capacity optimal multiuser OAMP/VAMP receiver is proposed, whose achievable rate is proved to be equal to the constrained sum capacity. Moreover, a design principle of multi-user codes is presented for the multiuser OAMP/VAMP, based on which a kind of practical multi-user low-density parity-check (MU-LDPC) code is designed. Numerical results show that finite-length performances of the proposed MU-LDPC codes with multi-user OAMP/VAMP are about 2 dB away from the constrained sum capacity and outperform those of the existing state-of-art methods.

Belief Propagation based Joint Detection and Decoding for Resistive Random Access Memories

Despite the great promises that the resistive random access memory (ReRAM) has shown as the next generation of non-volatile memory technology, its crossbar array structure leads to a severe sneak path interference to the signal read back from the memory cell. In this paper, we first propose a novel belief propagation (BP) based detector for the sneak path interference in ReRAM. Based on the conditions for a sneak path to occur and the dependence of the states of the memory cells that are involved in the sneak path, a Tanner graph for the ReRAM channel is constructed, inside which specific messages are updated iteratively to get a better estimation of the sneak path affected cells. We further combine the graph of the designed BP detector with that of the BP decoder of the polar codes to form a joint detector and decoder. Tailored for the joint detector and decoder over the ReRAM channel, effective polar codes are constructed using the genetic algorithm. Simulation results show that the BP detector can effectively detect the cells affected by the sneak path, and the proposed polar codes and the joint detector and decoder can significantly improve the error rate performance of ReRAM.

Near-Optimal Detection for Both Data and Sneak-Path Interference in Resistive Memories with Random Cell Selector Failures

Resistive random-access memory is one of the most promising candidates for the next generation of non-volatile memory technology. However, its crossbar structure causes severe "sneak-path" interference, which also leads to strong inter-cell correlation. Recent works have mainly focused on sub-optimal data detection schemes by ignoring inter-cell correlation and treating sneak-path interference as independent noise. We propose a near-optimal data detection scheme that can approach the performance bound of the optimal detection scheme. Our detection scheme leverages a joint data and sneak-path interference recovery and can use all inter-cell correlations. The scheme is appropriate for data detection of large memory arrays with only linear operation complexity.

Performance Limit and Coding Schemes for Resistive Random-Access Memory Channels

Resistive random-access memory (ReRAM) is a promising candidate for the next generation non-volatile memory technology due to its simple read/write operations and high storage density. However, its crossbar array structure causes a severe interference effect known as the "sneak path." In this paper, we propose channel coding techniques that can mitigate both the sneak-path interference and the channel noise. The main challenge is that the sneak-path interference is data-dependent, and also correlated within a memory array, and hence the conventional error correction coding scheme will be inadequate. In this work, we propose an across-array coding strategy that assigns a codeword to multiple independent memory arrays, and exploit a real-time channel estimation scheme to estimate the instantaneous status of the ReRAM channel. Since the coded bits from different arrays experience independent channels, a "diversity" gain can be obtained during decoding, and when the codeword is adequately distributed over different memory arrays, the code actually performs as that over an uncorrelated channel. By performing decoding based on the scheme of treating-interference-as-noise (TIN), the ReRAM channel over different memory arrays is equivalent to a block varying channel we defined, for which we propose both the capacity bounds and a coding scheme. The proposed coding scheme consists of a serial concatenation of an optimized error correction code with a data shaper, which enables the ReRAM system to achieve a near capacity limit storage efficiency.

Random NOMA With Cross-Slot Successive Interference Cancellation Packet Recovery

Conventional power-domain non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) relies on precise power control, which requires real-time channel state information at transmitters. This requirement severely limits its application to future wireless communication systems. To address this problem, we consider NOMA without power allocation, where we exploit the random channel fading and opportunistically perform successive interference cancellation (SIC) detection. To mitigate the multi-user interference, we propose a random NOMA where users randomly transmit their data packets with a certain probability. Then a cross-slot SIC packet recovery scheme is proposed to recover transmitted data packets. We model the cross-slot SIC packet recovery as a Markov process, and provide a throughput analysis, based on which the sum rate is maximized by jointly optimizing the transmission probability and the encoding rate of users.

Practical MIMO-NOMA: Low Complexity & Capacity-Approaching Solution

MIMO-NOMA combines Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) and Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA), which can address heterogeneous challenges, such as massive connectivity, low latency, and high reliability. In this paper, a practical coded MIMO-NOMA system with capacityapproaching performance as well as low implementation complexity is proposed. Specifically, the employed receiver consists of a multi-user Linear Minimum Mean-Square Error (LMMSE) detector and a bank of single-user message-passing decoders, which decompose the overall signal recovery into distributed low-complexity calculations. An asymptotic extrinsic information transfer analysis is proposed to estimate the performance of iterative receiver, where practical channel codes that match with the LMMSE detector in the iterative decoding perspective are constructed. As a result, the proposed coded MIMO-NOMA system achieves asymptotic performances within 0.2 dB from the theoretical capacity. Simulation results validate the reliability and robustness of the proposed system in practical settings, including various system loads, iteration numbers, code lengths, and channel conditions.

Message Passing in C-RAN: Joint User Activity and Signal Detection

In cloud radio access network (C-RAN), remote radio heads (RRHs) and users are uniformly distributed in a large area such that the channel matrix can be considered as sparse. Based on this phenomenon, RRHs only need to detect the relatively strong signals from nearby users and ignore the weak signals from far users, which is helpful to develop low-complexity detection algorithms without causing much performance loss. However, before detection, RRHs require to obtain the realtime user activity information by the dynamic grant procedure, which causes the enormous latency. To address this issue, in this paper, we consider a grant-free C-RAN system and propose a low-complexity Bernoulli-Gaussian message passing (BGMP) algorithm based on the sparsified channel, which jointly detects the user activity and signal. Since active users are assumed to transmit Gaussian signals at any time, the user activity can be regarded as a Bernoulli variable and the signals from all users obey a Bernoulli-Gaussian distribution. In the BGMP, the detection functions for signals are designed with respect to the Bernoulli-Gaussian variable. Numerical results demonstrate the robustness and effectivity of the BGMP. That is, for different sparsified channels, the BGMP can approach the mean-square error (MSE) of the genie-aided sparse minimum mean-square error (GA-SMMSE) which exactly knows the user activity information. Meanwhile, the fast convergence and strong recovery capability for user activity of the BGMP are also verified.
