Distributed Algorithm Over Time-Varying Unbalanced Topologies for Optimization Problem Subject to Multiple Local Constraints

This paper studies the distributed optimization problem with possibly nonidentical local constraints, where its global objective function is composed of $N$ convex functions. The aim is to solve the considered optimization problem in a distributed manner over time-varying unbalanced directed topologies by using only local information and performing only local computations. Towards this end, a new distributed discrete-time algorithm is developed by synthesizing the row stochastic matrices sequence and column stochastic matrices sequence analysis technique. Furthermore, for the developed distributed discrete-time algorithm, its convergence property to the optimal solution as well as its convergence rate are established under some mild assumptions. Numerical simulations are finally presented to verify the theoretical results.

Distributed Nash Equilibrium Seeking in Consistency-Constrained Multi-Coalition Games

Distributed Nash equilibrium (NE) seeking problem for multi-coalition games has attracted increasing attention in recent years, but the research mainly focuses on the case without agreement demand within coalitions. This paper considers a class of networked games among multiple coalitions where each coalition contains multiple agents that cooperate to minimize the sum of their costs, subject to the demand of reaching an agreement on their state values. Furthermore, the underlying network topology among the agents does not need to be balanced. To achieve the goal of NE seeking within such a context, two estimates are constructed for each agent, namely, an estimate of partial derivatives of the cost function and an estimate of global state values, based on which, an iterative state updating law is elaborately designed. Linear convergence of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated. It is shown that the consistency-constrained multi-coalition games investigated in this paper put the well-studied networked games among individual players and distributed optimization in a unified framework, and the proposed algorithm can easily degenerate into solutions to these problems.

Solving specified-time distributed optimization problem via sampled-data-based algorithm

Despite significant advances on distributed continuous-time optimization of multi-agent networks, there is still lack of an efficient algorithm to achieve the goal of distributed optimization at a pre-specified time. Herein, we design a specified-time distributed optimization algorithm for connected agents with directed topologies to collectively minimize the sum of individual objective functions subject to an equality constraint. With the designed algorithm, the settling time of distributed optimization can be exactly predefined. The specified selection of such a settling time is independent of not only the initial conditions of agents, but also the algorithm parameters and the communication topologies. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm can realize specified-time optimization by exchanging information among neighbours only at discrete sampling instants and thus reduces the communication burden. In addition, the equality constraint is always satisfied during the whole process, which makes the proposed algorithm applicable to online solving distributed optimization problems such as economic dispatch. For the special case of undirected communication topologies, a reduced-order algorithm is also designed. Finally, the effectiveness of the theoretical analysis is justified by numerical simulations.

Multi-Task Variational Information Bottleneck

Multi-task learning (MTL) is an important subject in machine learning and artificial intelligence. Its applications to computer vision, signal processing, and speech recognition are ubiquitous. Although this subject has attracted considerable attention recently, the performance and robustness of the existing models to different tasks have not been well balanced. This article proposes an MTL model based on the architecture of the variational information bottleneck (VIB), which can provide a more effective latent representation of the input features for the downstream tasks. Extensive observations on three public data sets under adversarial attacks show that the proposed model is competitive to the state-of-the-art algorithms concerning the prediction accuracy. Experimental results suggest that combining the VIB and the task-dependent uncertainties is a very effective way to abstract valid information from the input features for accomplishing multiple tasks.

Fixed-Time Cooperative Tracking Control for Double-Integrator Multi-Agent Systems: A Time-Based Generator Approach

In this paper, both the fixed-time distributed consensus tracking and the fixed-time distributed average tracking problems for double-integrator-type multi-agent systems with bounded input disturbances are studied, respectively. Firstly, a new practical robust fixed-time sliding mode control method based on the time-based generator is proposed. Secondly, a fixed-time distributed consensus tracking observer for double-integrator-type multi-agent systems is designed to estimate the state disagreements between the leader and the followers under undirected and directed communication, respectively. Thirdly, a fixed-time distributed average tracking observer for double-integrator-type multi-agent systems is designed to measure the average value of reference signals under undirected communication. Note that both the observers for the distributed consensus tracking and the distributed average tracking are devised based on time-based generators and can be extended to that of high-order multi-agent systems trivially. Furthermore, by combing the fixed-time sliding mode control with the fixed-time observers, the fixed-time controllers are designed to solve the distributed consensus tracking and the distributed average tracking problems. Finally, a few numerical simulations are shown to verify the results.

Distributed Consensus of Linear Multi-Agent Systems with Switching Directed Topologies

This paper addresses the distributed consensus problem for a linear multi-agent system with switching directed communication topologies. By appropriately introducing a linear transformation, the consensus problem is equivalently converted to a stabilization problem for a class of switched linear systems. Some sufficient consensus conditions are then derived by using tools from the matrix theory and stability analysis of switched systems. It is proved that consensus in such a multi-agent system can be ensured if each agent is stabilizable and each possible directed topology contains a directed spanning tree. Finally, a numerical simulation is given for illustration.

Designing Fully Distributed Consensus Protocols for Linear Multi-agent Systems with Directed Graphs

This paper addresses the distributed consensus protocol design problem for multi-agent systems with general linear dynamics and directed communication graphs. Existing works usually design consensus protocols using the smallest real part of the nonzero eigenvalues of the Laplacian matrix associated with the communication graph, which however is global information. In this paper, based on only the agent dynamics and the relative states of neighboring agents, a distributed adaptive consensus protocol is designed to achieve leader-follower consensus for any communication graph containing a directed spanning tree with the leader as the root node. The proposed adaptive protocol is independent of any global information of the communication graph and thereby is fully distributed. Extensions to the case with multiple leaders are further studied.

Guaranteed Cost Tracking for Uncertain Coupled Multi-agent Systems Using Consensus over a Directed Graph

This paper considers the leader-follower control problem for a linear multi-agent system with directed communication topology and linear nonidentical uncertain coupling subject to integral quadratic constraints (IQCs). A consensus-type control protocol is proposed based on each agent's states relative to its neighbors and leader's state relative to agents which observe the leader. A sufficient condition is obtained by overbounding the cost function. Based on this sufficient condition, a computational algorithm is introduced to minimize the proposed guaranteed bound on tracking performance, which yields a suboptimal bound on the system consensus control and tracking performance. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated using a simulation example.

Distributed H-infinity Tracking Control for Discrete-Time Multi-Agent Systems with a High-Dimensional Leader

This paper considers the distributed H-infinity leader-following tracking problem for a class of discrete time multi-agent systems with a high-dimensional dynamic leader. It is assumed that output information about the leader is only available to designated followers, and the dynamics of the followers are subject to perturbations. To achieve distributed H-infinity leader-following tracking, a new class of control protocols is proposed which is based on the feedback from the nearest neighbors as well as a distributed state estimator. Under the assumptions that dynamics of the leader are detectable and the communication topology contains a directed spanning tree, sufficient conditions are obtained that enable all followers to track the leader while achieving a desired H-infinity leader-following tracking performance. Numerical simulations illustrate the effectiveness of the theoretical analysis.
