Novel Spatial Profiles of Population Distribution of Two Diffusive SIS Epidemic Models with Mass Action Infection Mechanism and Small Movement Rate for the Infected Individuals

In this paper, we are concerned with two SIS epidemic reaction-diffusion models with mass action infection mechanism of the form $SI$, and study the spatial profile of population distribution as the movement rate of the infected individuals is restricted to be small. For the model with a constant total population number, our results show that the susceptible population always converges to a positive constant which is indeed the minimum of the associated risk function, and the infected population either concentrates at the isolated highest-risk points or aggregates only on the highest-risk intervals once the highest-risk locations contain at least one interval. In sharp contrast, for the model with a varying total population number which is caused by the recruitment of the susceptible individuals and death of the infected individuals, our results reveal that the susceptible population converges to a positive function which is non-constant unless the associated risk function is constant, and the infected population may concentrate only at some isolated highest-risk points, or aggregate at least in a neighborhood of the highest-risk locations or occupy the whole habitat, depending on the behavior of the associated risk function and even its smoothness at the highest-risk locations. Numerical simulations are performed to support and complement our theoretical findings.

The number of extended irreducible binary Goppa codes

Goppa, in the 1970s, discovered the relation between algebraic geometry and codes, which led to the family of Goppa codes. As one of the most interesting subclasses of linear codes, the family of Goppa codes is often chosen as a key in the McEliece cryptosystem. Knowledge of the number of inequivalent binary Goppa codes for fixed parameters may facilitate in the evaluation of the security of such a cryptosystem. Let $n\geq5$ be an odd prime number, let $q=2^n$ and let $r\geq3$ be a positive integer satisfying $\gcd(r,n)=1$. The purpose of this paper is to establish an upper bound on the number of inequivalent extended irreducible binary Goppa codes of length $q+1$ and degree $r$.A potential mathematical object for this purpose is to count the number of orbits of the projective semi-linear group ${\rm PGL}_2(\mathbb{F}_q)\rtimes{\rm Gal}(\mathbb{F}_{q^r}/\mathbb{F}_2)$ on the set $\mathcal{I}_r$ of all monic irreducible polynomials of degree $r$ over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. An explicit formula for the number of orbits of ${\rm PGL}_2(\mathbb{F}_q)\rtimes{\rm Gal}(\mathbb{F}_{q^r}/\mathbb{F}_2)$ on $\mathcal{I}_r$ is given, and consequently, an upper bound for the number of inequivalent extended irreducible binary Goppa codes of length $q+1$ and degree $r$ is derived. Our main result naturally contains the main results of Ryan (IEEE-TIT 2015), Huang and Yue (IEEE-TIT, 2022) and, Chen and Zhang (IEEE-TIT, 2022), which considered the cases $r=4$, $r=6$ and $\gcd(r,q^3-q)=1$ respectively.

Enumeration of extended irreducible binary Goppa codes

The family of Goppa codes is one of the most interesting subclasses of linear codes. As the McEliece cryptosystem often chooses a random Goppa code as its key, knowledge of the number of inequivalent Goppa codes for fixed parameters may facilitate in the evaluation of the security of such a cryptosystem. In this paper we present a new approach to give an upper bound on the number of inequivalent extended irreducible binary Goppa codes. To be more specific, let $n>3$ be an odd prime number and $q=2^n$; let $r\geq3$ be a positive integer satisfying $\gcd(r,n)=1$ and $\gcd\big(r,q(q^2-1)\big)=1$. We obtain an upper bound for the number of inequivalent extended irreducible binary Goppa codes of length $q+1$ and degree $r$.

Emerging Oscillating Reactions at the Insulator/Semiconductor Solid/Solid Interface via Proton Implantation

Most oscillating reactions (ORs) happen in solutions. Few existing solid-based ORs either happen on solid/gas (e.g., oxidation or corrosion) or solid/liquid interfaces, or at the all-solid interfaces neighboring to metals or ionic conductors (e.g., electrolysis or electroplate). We report in this paper a new type of all-solid based OR that happens at the insulator (amorphous SiO$_2$)/semiconductor (Si) interface with the interfacial point defects as the oscillating species. This OR is the first example of the point-defect coupled ORs (PDC-ORs) proposed by H. Schmalzried et al. and J. Janek et al. decades ago. We use proton implantation as the driving force of the oscillation, and employ techniques common in semiconductor device characterization to monitor the oscillation in situ. This approach not only overcomes the difficulties associated with detecting reactions in solids, but also accurately measure the oscillating ultra-low concentration ($10^{10}\sim10^{11}$ cm$^{-2}$) of the interfacial charged point-defects. We propose a mechanism for the reported PDC-OR based on the Brusselator model by identifying the interfacial reactions.

Improved Singleton bound on insertion-deletion codes and optimal constructions

Insertion-deletion codes (insdel codes for short) play an important role in synchronization error correction. The higher the minimum insdel distance, the more insdel errors the code can correct. Haeupler and Shahrasbi established the Singleton bound for insdel codes: the minimum insdel distance of any $[n,k]$ linear code over $\mathbb{F}_q$ satisfies $d\leq2n-2k+2.$ There have been some constructions of insdel codes through Reed-Solomon codes with high capabilities, but none has come close to this bound. Recently, Do Duc {\it et al.} showed that the minimum insdel distance of any $[n,k]$ Reed-Solomon code is no more than $2n-2k$ if $q$ is large enough compared to the code length $n$; optimal codes that meet the new bound were also constructed explicitly. The contribution of this paper is twofold. We first show that the minimum insdel distance of any $[n,k]$ linear code over $\mathbb{F}_q$ satisfies $d\leq2n-2k$ if $n>k>1$. This result improves and generalizes the previously known results in the literature. We then give a sufficient condition under which the minimum insdel distance of a two-dimensional Reed-Solomon code of length $n$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$ is exactly equal to $2n-4$. As a consequence, we show that the sufficient condition is not hard to achieve; we explicitly construct an infinite family of optimal two-dimensional Reed-Somolom codes meeting the bound.

Universal Analytic Model of Irradiation Defect Dynamics in Silica-Silicon Structures

Irradiation damage is a key physics issue for semiconductor devices under extreme environments. For decades, the ionization-irradiation-induced damage in transistors with silica-silicon structures under constant dose rate is modeled by a uniform generation of $E'$ centers in the bulk silica region and their irreversible conversion to $P_b$ centers at the silica-silicon interface. But, the traditional model fails to explain experimentally observed dependence of the defect concentrations on dose, especially at low dose rate. Here, we propose that, the generation of $E'$ is decelerated due to the dispersive diffusion of induced holes in the disordered silica and the conversion of $P_b$ is reversible due to recombination-enhanced defect reactions under irradiation. It is shown that the derived analytic model based on these new understandings can consistently explain the fundamental but puzzling dependence of the defect concentrations on dose and dose rate in a wide range.

Asymptotic behavior of the principal eigenvalue of a linear second order elliptic operator with small/large diffusion coefficient and its application

In this article, we are concerned with the following eigenvalue problem of a linear second order elliptic operator: \begin{equation} \nonumber -DΔϕ-2α\nabla m(x)\cdot \nablaϕ+V(x)ϕ=λϕ \ \hbox{ in }Ω, \end{equation} complemented by a general boundary condition including Dirichlet boundary condition and Robin boundary condition: $$ \frac{\partialϕ}{\partial n}+β(x)ϕ=0 \ \ \hbox{ on }\partialΩ, $$ where $β\in C(\partialΩ)$ allows to be positive, sign-changing or negative, and $n(x)$ is the unit exterior normal to $\partialΩ$ at $x$. The domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^N$ is bounded and smooth, the constants $D>0$ and $α>0$ are, respectively, the diffusive and advection coefficients, and $m\in C^2(\barΩ),\,V\in C(\barΩ)$ are given functions. We aim to investigate the asymptotic behavior of the principal eigenvalue of the above eigenvalue problem as the diffusive coefficient $D\to0$ or $D\to\infty$. Our results, together with those of \cite{CL2,DF,Fr} where the Nuemann boundary case (i.e., $β=0$ on $\partialΩ$) and Dirichlet boundary case were studied, reveal the important effect of advection and boundary conditions on the asymptotic behavior of the principal eigenvalue. We also apply our results to a reaction-diffusion-advection equation which is used to describe the evolution of a single species living in a heterogeneous stream environment and show some interesting behaviors of the species persistence and extinction caused by the buffer zone and small/large diffusion rate.

A Construction of MDS Quantum Convolutional Codes

In this paper, two new families of MDS quantum convolutional codes are constructed. The first one can be regarded as a generalization of \cite[Theorem 6.5]{GGGlinear}, in the sense that we do not assume that $q\equiv1\pmod{4}$. More specifically, we obtain two classes of MDS quantum convolutional codes with parameters: {\rm (i)}~ $[(q^2+1, q^2-4i+3,1;2,2i+2)]_q$, where $q\geq5$ is an odd prime power and $2\leq i\leq(q-1)/2$; {\rm (ii)}~ $[(\frac{q^2+1}{10},\frac{q^2+1}{10}-4i,1;2,2i+3)]_q$, where $q$ is an odd prime power with the form $q=10m+3$ or $10m+7$ ($m\geq2$), and $2\leq i\leq2m-1$.

Self-dual cyclic codes over finite chain rings

Let $R$ be a finite commutative chain ring with unique maximal ideal $\langle γ\rangle$, and let $n$ be a positive integer coprime with the characteristic of $R/\langle γ\rangle$. In this paper, the algebraic structure of cyclic codes of length $n$ over $R$ is investigated. Some new necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of nontrivial self-dual cyclic codes are provided. An enumeration formula for the self-dual cyclic codes is also studied.

Application of Constacyclic codes to Quantum MDS Codes

Quantum maximal-distance-separable (MDS) codes form an important class of quantum codes. To get $q$-ary quantum MDS codes, it suffices to find linear MDS codes $C$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$ satisfying $C^{\perp_H}\subseteq C$ by the Hermitian construction and the quantum Singleton bound. If $C^{\perp_{H}}\subseteq C$, we say that $C$ is a dual-containing code. Many new quantum MDS codes with relatively large minimum distance have been produced by constructing dual-containing constacyclic MDS codes (see \cite{Guardia11}, \cite{Kai13}, \cite{Kai14}). These works motivate us to make a careful study on the existence condition for nontrivial dual-containing constacyclic codes. This would help us to avoid unnecessary attempts and provide effective ideas in order to construct dual-containing codes. Several classes of dual-containing MDS constacyclic codes are constructed and their parameters are computed. Consequently, new quantum MDS codes are derived from these parameters. The quantum MDS codes exhibited here have parameters better than the ones available in the literature.

Self-dual Permutation Codes of Finite Groups in Semisimple Case

The existence and construction of self-dual codes in a permutation module of a finite group for the semisimple case are described from two aspects, one is from the point of view of the composition factors which are self-dual modules, the other one is from the point of view of the Galois group of the coefficient field.
