Joint Trajectory Replanning for Mars Ascent Vehicle under Propulsion System Faults: A Suboptimal Learning-Based Warm-Start Approach

During the Mars ascent vehicle (MAV) launch missions, when encountering a thrust drop type of propulsion system fault problem, the general trajectory replanning methods relying on step-by-step judgments may fail to make timely decisions, potentially leading to mission failure. This paper proposes a suboptimal joint trajectory replanning (SJTR) method, which formulates the joint optimization problem of target orbit and flight trajectory after a fault within a convex optimization framework. By incorporating penalty coefficients for terminal constraints, the optimization solution adheres to the orbit redecision principle, thereby avoiding complex decision-making processes and resulting in a concise and rapid solution to the replanning problem. A learning-based warm-start scheme is proposed in conjunction with the designed SJTR method. Offline, a deep neural network (DNN) is trained using a dataset generated by the SJTR method. Online, the DNN provides initial guesses for the time optimization variables based on the current fault situation, enhancing the solving efficiency and reliability of the algorithm. Numerical simulations of the MAV flight scenario under the thrust drop faults are performed, and Monte Carlo experiments and case studies across all orbit types demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Adaptive Shape Servoing of Elastic Rods using Parameterized Regression Features and Auto-Tuning Motion Controls

The robotic manipulation of deformable linear objects has shown great potential in a wide range of real-world applications. However, it presents many challenges due to the objects' complex nonlinearity and high-dimensional configuration. In this paper, we propose a new shape servoing framework to automatically manipulate elastic rods through visual feedback. Our new method uses parameterized regression features to compute a compact (low-dimensional) feature vector that quantifies the object's shape, thus, enabling to establish an explicit shape servo-loop. To automatically deform the rod into a desired shape, the proposed adaptive controller iteratively estimates the differential transformation between the robot's motion and the relative shape changes; This valuable capability allows to effectively manipulate objects with unknown mechanical models. An auto-tuning algorithm is introduced to adjust the robot's shaping motions in real-time based on optimal performance criteria. To validate the proposed framework, a detailed experimental study with vision-guided robotic manipulators is presented.

Sampling-based 3-D Line-of-Sight PWA Model Predictive Control for Autonomous Rendezvous and Docking with a Tumbling Target

In this paper, a model predictive control (MPC) framework is employed to realize autonomous rendezvous and docking (AR&D) with a tumbling target, using the piecewise affine (PWA) model of the 3-D line-of-sight (LOS) dynamics and Euler attitude dynamics. Consider the error between the predictions obtained by the approximate linear model and the actual states of nonlinear dynamics, a sampling-based PWA MPC is proposed to sample the predictions in the closer neighborhood of the actual states. Besides, novel constructions of constraints are presented to reduce the on-board computation cost and time-delay. Furthermore, a singularity-free strategy is provided to realize crossing the singularity of angle states smoothly. Then, the mission is achieved by continuous 6-DOF pose (position and attitude) tracking of the target's docking port, with the coupling between the position and attitude of the target's docking port is taken into account. Finally, numerical results are presented to demonstrate the above theories.
