Uncertainty-Aware Blind Image Quality Assessment in the Laboratory and Wild

Performance of blind image quality assessment (BIQA) models has been significantly boosted by end-to-end optimization of feature engineering and quality regression. Nevertheless, due to the distributional shift between images simulated in the laboratory and captured in the wild, models trained on databases with synthetic distortions remain particularly weak at handling realistic distortions (and vice versa). To confront the cross-distortion-scenario challenge, we develop a \textit{unified} BIQA model and an approach of training it for both synthetic and realistic distortions. We first sample pairs of images from individual IQA databases, and compute a probability that the first image of each pair is of higher quality. We then employ the fidelity loss to optimize a deep neural network for BIQA over a large number of such image pairs. We also explicitly enforce a hinge constraint to regularize uncertainty estimation during optimization. Extensive experiments on six IQA databases show the promise of the learned method in blindly assessing image quality in the laboratory and wild. In addition, we demonstrate the universality of the proposed training strategy by using it to improve existing BIQA models.

Abnormal respiratory patterns classifier may contribute to large-scale screening of people infected with COVID-19 in an accurate and unobtrusive manner

Research significance: The extended version of this paper has been accepted by IEEE Internet of Things journal (DOI: 10.1109/JIOT.2020.2991456), please cite the journal version. During the epidemic prevention and control period, our study can be helpful in prognosis, diagnosis and screening for the patients infected with COVID-19 (the novel coronavirus) based on breathing characteristics. According to the latest clinical research, the respiratory pattern of COVID-19 is different from the respiratory patterns of flu and the common cold. One significant symptom that occurs in the COVID-19 is Tachypnea. People infected with COVID-19 have more rapid respiration. Our study can be utilized to distinguish various respiratory patterns and our device can be preliminarily put to practical use. Demo videos of this method working in situations of one subject and two subjects can be downloaded online. Research details: Accurate detection of the unexpected abnormal respiratory pattern of people in a remote and unobtrusive manner has great significance. In this work, we innovatively capitalize on depth camera and deep learning to achieve this goal. The challenges in this task are twofold: the amount of real-world data is not enough for training to get the deep model; and the intra-class variation of different types of respiratory patterns is large and the outer-class variation is small. In this paper, considering the characteristics of actual respiratory signals, a novel and efficient Respiratory Simulation Model (RSM) is first proposed to fill the gap between the large amount of training data and scarce real-world data. The proposed deep model and the modeling ideas have the great potential to be extended to large scale applications such as public places, sleep scenario, and office environment.

Learning Local Neighboring Structure for Robust 3D Shape Representation

Mesh is a powerful data structure for 3D shapes. Representation learning for 3D meshes is important in many computer vision and graphics applications. The recent success of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for structured data (e.g., images) suggests the value of adapting insight from CNN for 3D shapes. However, 3D shape data are irregular since each node's neighbors are unordered. Various graph neural networks for 3D shapes have been developed with isotropic filters or predefined local coordinate systems to overcome the node inconsistency on graphs. However, isotropic filters or predefined local coordinate systems limit the representation power. In this paper, we propose a local structure-aware anisotropic convolutional operation (LSA-Conv) that learns adaptive weighting matrices for each node according to the local neighboring structure and performs shared anisotropic filters. In fact, the learnable weighting matrix is similar to the attention matrix in the random synthesizer -- a new Transformer model for natural language processing (NLP). Comprehensive experiments demonstrate that our model produces significant improvement in 3D shape reconstruction compared to state-of-the-art methods.

Identification of deep breath while moving forward based on multiple body regions and graph signal analysis

This paper presents an unobtrusive solution that can automatically identify deep breath when a person is walking past the global depth camera. Existing non-contact breath assessments achieve satisfactory results under restricted conditions when human body stays relatively still. When someone moves forward, the breath signals detected by depth camera are hidden within signals of trunk displacement and deformation, and the signal length is short due to the short stay time, posing great challenges for us to establish models. To overcome these challenges, multiple region of interests (ROIs) based signal extraction and selection method is proposed to automatically obtain the signal informative to breath from depth video. Subsequently, graph signal analysis (GSA) is adopted as a spatial-temporal filter to wipe the components unrelated to breath. Finally, a classifier for identifying deep breath is established based on the selected breath-informative signal. In validation experiments, the proposed approach outperforms the comparative methods with the accuracy, precision, recall and F1 of 75.5%, 76.2%, 75.0% and 75.2%, respectively. This system can be extended to public places to provide timely and ubiquitous help for those who may have or are going through physical or mental trouble.

Face Mask Assistant: Detection of Face Mask Service Stage Based on Mobile Phone

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has spread all over the world since it broke out massively in December 2019, which has caused a large loss to the whole world. Both the confirmed cases and death cases have reached a relatively frightening number. Syndrome coronaviruses 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the cause of COVID-19, can be transmitted by small respiratory droplets. To curb its spread at the source, wearing masks is a convenient and effective measure. In most cases, people use face masks in a high-frequent but short-time way. Aimed at solving the problem that we don't know which service stage of the mask belongs to, we propose a detection system based on the mobile phone. We first extract four features from the GLCMs of the face mask's micro-photos. Next, a three-result detection system is accomplished by using KNN algorithm. The results of validation experiments show that our system can reach a precision of 82.87% (standard deviation=8.5%) on the testing dataset. In future work, we plan to expand the detection objects to more mask types. This work demonstrates that the proposed mobile microscope system can be used as an assistant for face mask being used, which may play a positive role in fighting against COVID-19.

Toward Better Understanding of Saliency Prediction in Augmented 360 Degree Videos

Augmented reality (AR) overlays digital content onto the reality. In AR system, correct and precise estimations of user's visual fixations and head movements can enhance the quality of experience by allocating more computation resources on the areas of interest. However, there is inadequate research about understanding the visual exploration of users when using an AR system or modeling AR visual attention. To bridge the gap between the saliency prediction on real-world scene and on scene augmented by virtual information, we construct the ARVR saliency dataset with 12 diverse videos viewed by 20 people. The virtual reality (VR) technique is employed to simulate the real-world. Annotations of object recognition and tracking as augmented contents are blended into the omnidirectional videos. The saliency annotations of head and eye movements for both original and augmented videos are collected and together constitute the ARVR dataset. We also design a model which is capable of solving the saliency prediction problem in AR. Local block images are extracted to simulate the viewport and offset the projection distortion. Conspicuous visual cues in local viewports are extracted to constitute the spatial features. The optical flow information is estimated as the important temporal feature. We also consider the interplay between virtual information and reality. The composition of the augmentation information is distinguished, and the joint effects of adversarial augmentation and complementary augmentation are estimated. We generate a graph by taking each block image as one node. Both the visual saliency mechanism and the characteristics of viewing behaviors are considered in the computation of edge weights on the graph which are interpreted as Markov chains. The fraction of the visual attention that is diverted to each block image is estimated through equilibrium distribution on of this chain.

Permutation Matters: Anisotropic Convolutional Layer for Learning on Point Clouds

It has witnessed a growing demand for efficient representation learning on point clouds in many 3D computer vision applications. Behind the success story of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) is that the data (e.g., images) are Euclidean structured. However, point clouds are irregular and unordered. Various point neural networks have been developed with isotropic filters or using weighting matrices to overcome the structure inconsistency on point clouds. However, isotropic filters or weighting matrices limit the representation power. In this paper, we propose a permutable anisotropic convolutional operation (PAI-Conv) that calculates soft-permutation matrices for each point using dot-product attention according to a set of evenly distributed kernel points on a sphere's surface and performs shared anisotropic filters. In fact, dot product with kernel points is by analogy with the dot-product with keys in Transformer as widely used in natural language processing (NLP). From this perspective, PAI-Conv can be regarded as the transformer for point clouds, which is physically meaningful and is robust to cooperate with the efficient random point sampling method. Comprehensive experiments on point clouds demonstrate that PAI-Conv produces competitive results in classification and semantic segmentation tasks compared to state-of-the-art methods.

Learning to Blindly Assess Image Quality in the Laboratory and Wild

Computational models for blind image quality assessment (BIQA) are typically trained in well-controlled laboratory environments with limited generalizability to realistically distorted images. Similarly, BIQA models optimized for images captured in the wild cannot adequately handle synthetically distorted images. To face the cross-distortion-scenario challenge, we develop a BIQA model and an approach of training it on multiple IQA databases (of different distortion scenarios) simultaneously. A key step in our approach is to create and combine image pairs within individual databases as the training set, which effectively bypasses the issue of perceptual scale realignment. We compute a continuous quality annotation for each pair from the corresponding human opinions, indicating the probability of one image having better perceptual quality. We train a deep neural network for BIQA over the training set of massive image pairs by minimizing the fidelity loss. Experiments on six IQA databases demonstrate that the optimized model by the proposed training strategy is effective in blindly assessing image quality in the laboratory and wild, outperforming previous BIQA methods by a large margin.

Combining Visible Light and Infrared Imaging for Efficient Detection of Respiratory Infections such as COVID-19 on Portable Device

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has become a serious global epidemic in the past few months and caused huge loss to human society worldwide. For such a large-scale epidemic, early detection and isolation of potential virus carriers is essential to curb the spread of the epidemic. Recent studies have shown that one important feature of COVID-19 is the abnormal respiratory status caused by viral infections. During the epidemic, many people tend to wear masks to reduce the risk of getting sick. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a portable non-contact method to screen the health condition of people wearing masks through analysis of the respiratory characteristics. The device mainly consists of a FLIR one thermal camera and an Android phone. This may help identify those potential patients of COVID-19 under practical scenarios such as pre-inspection in schools and hospitals. In this work, we perform the health screening through the combination of the RGB and thermal videos obtained from the dual-mode camera and deep learning architecture. We first accomplish a respiratory data capture technique for people wearing masks by using face recognition. Then, a bidirectional GRU neural network with attention mechanism is applied to the respiratory data to obtain the health screening result. The results of validation experiments show that our model can identify the health status on respiratory with the accuracy of 83.7\% on the real-world dataset. The abnormal respiratory data and part of normal respiratory data are collected from Ruijin Hospital Affiliated to The Shanghai Jiao Tong University Medical School. Other normal respiratory data are obtained from healthy people around our researchers. This work demonstrates that the proposed portable and intelligent health screening device can be used as a pre-scan method for respiratory infections, which may help fight the current COVID-19 epidemic.

Portable Health Screening Device of Respiratory Infections

The COVID-19 epidemic was listed as a public health emergency of international concern by the WHO on January 30, 2020. To curb the secondary spread of the epidemic, many public places were equipped with thermal imagers to check the body temperature. However, the COVID-19 pneumonia has concealed symptoms: the first symptom may not be fever, and can be shortness of breath. During epidemic prevention, many people tend to wear masks. Therefore, in this demo paper, we proposed a portable non-contact healthy screening system for people wearing masks, which can simultaneously obtain body temperature and respiration state. This system consists of three modules viz. thermal image collection module, health indicator calculation module and health assessment module. In this system, the thermal video of human faces is first captured through a portable thermal imaging camera. Then, body temperature and respiration state are extracted from the video and are imported into the following health assessment module. Finally, the screening result can be obtained. The results of preliminary experiments show that this syetem can give an accurate screening result within 15 seconds. This system can be applied to many application scenarios such as community and campus.

A multiple attributes image quality database for smartphone camera photo quality assessment

Smartphone is the superstar product in digital device market and the quality of smartphone camera photos (SCPs) is becoming one of the dominant considerations when consumers purchase smartphones. How to evaluate the quality of smartphone cameras and the taken photos is urgent issue to be solved. To bridge the gap between academic research accomplishment and industrial needs, in this paper, we establish a new Smartphone Camera Photo Quality Database (SCPQD2020) including 1800 images with 120 scenes taken by 15 smartphones. Exposure, color, noise and texture which are four dominant factors influencing the quality of SCP are evaluated in the subjective study, respectively. Ten popular no-reference (NR) image quality assessment (IQA) algorithms are tested and analyzed on our database. Experimental results demonstrate that the current objective models are not suitable for SCPs, and quality metrics having high correlation with human visual perception are highly needed.

Blurry Video Frame Interpolation

Existing works reduce motion blur and up-convert frame rate through two separate ways, including frame deblurring and frame interpolation. However, few studies have approached the joint video enhancement problem, namely synthesizing high-frame-rate clear results from low-frame-rate blurry inputs. In this paper, we propose a blurry video frame interpolation method to reduce motion blur and up-convert frame rate simultaneously. Specifically, we develop a pyramid module to cyclically synthesize clear intermediate frames. The pyramid module features adjustable spatial receptive field and temporal scope, thus contributing to controllable computational complexity and restoration ability. Besides, we propose an inter-pyramid recurrent module to connect sequential models to exploit the temporal relationship. The pyramid module integrates a recurrent module, thus can iteratively synthesize temporally smooth results without significantly increasing the model size. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that our method performs favorably against state-of-the-art methods.

Robust Invisible Hyperlinks in Physical Photographs Based on 3D Rendering Attacks

In the era of multimedia and Internet, people are eager to obtain information from offline to online. Quick Response (QR) codes and digital watermarks help us access information quickly. However, QR codes look ugly and invisible watermarks can be easily broken in physical photographs. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel method to embed hyperlinks into natural images, making the hyperlinks invisible for human eyes but detectable for mobile devices. Our method is an end-to-end neural network with an encoder to hide information and a decoder to recover information. From original images to physical photographs, camera imaging process will introduce a series of distortion such as noise, blur, and light. To train a robust decoder against the physical distortion from the real world, a distortion network based on 3D rendering is inserted between the encoder and the decoder to simulate the camera imaging process. Besides, in order to maintain the visual attraction of the image with hyperlinks, we propose a loss function based on just noticeable difference (JND) to supervise the training of encoder. Experimental results show that our approach outperforms the previous method in both simulated and real situations.

How is Gaze Influenced by Image Transformations? Dataset and Model

Data size is the bottleneck for developing deep saliency models, because collecting eye-movement data is very time consuming and expensive. Most of current studies on human attention and saliency modeling have used high quality stereotype stimuli. In real world, however, captured images undergo various types of transformations. Can we use these transformations to augment existing saliency datasets? Here, we first create a novel saliency dataset including fixations of 10 observers over 1900 images degraded by 19 types of transformations. Second, by analyzing eye movements, we find that observers look at different locations over transformed versus original images. Third, we utilize the new data over transformed images, called data augmentation transformation (DAT), to train deep saliency models. We find that label preserving DATs with negligible impact on human gaze boost saliency prediction, whereas some other DATs that severely impact human gaze degrade the performance. These label preserving valid augmentation transformations provide a solution to enlarge existing saliency datasets. Finally, we introduce a novel saliency model based on generative adversarial network (dubbed GazeGAN). A modified UNet is proposed as the generator of the GazeGAN, which combines classic skip connections with a novel center-surround connection (CSC), in order to leverage multi level features. We also propose a histogram loss based on Alternative Chi Square Distance (ACS HistLoss) to refine the saliency map in terms of luminance distribution. Extensive experiments and comparisons over 3 datasets indicate that GazeGAN achieves the best performance in terms of popular saliency evaluation metrics, and is more robust to various perturbations. An Algorithm for Transmitting VR Video Based on Adaptive Modulation

Virtual reality (VR) is making waves around the world recently. However, traditional video streaming is not suitable for VR video because of the huge size and view switch requirements of VR videos. Since the view of each user is limited, it is unnecessary to send the whole 360-degree scene at high quality which can be a heavy burden for the transmission system. Assuming filed-of-view (FoV) of each user can be predicted with high probability, we can divide the video screen into partitions and send those partitions which will appear in FoV at high quality. Hence, we propose an novel strategy for VR video streaming. First, we define a quality-of-experience metric to measure the viewing experience of users and define a channel model to reflect the fluctuation of the wireless channel. Next, we formulate the optimization problem and find its feasible solution by convex optimization. In order to improve bandwidth efficiency, we also add adaptive modulation to this part. Finally, we compare our algorithm with other VR streaming algorithm in the simulation. It turns out that our algorithm outperforms other algorithms.

Adversarial Attacks against Deep Saliency Models

Currently, a plethora of saliency models based on deep neural networks have led great breakthroughs in many complex high-level vision tasks (e.g. scene description, object detection). The robustness of these models, however, has not yet been studied. In this paper, we propose a sparse feature-space adversarial attack method against deep saliency models for the first time. The proposed attack only requires a part of the model information, and is able to generate a sparser and more insidious adversarial perturbation, compared to traditional image-space attacks. These adversarial perturbations are so subtle that a human observer cannot notice their presences, but the model outputs will be revolutionized. This phenomenon raises security threats to deep saliency models in practical applications. We also explore some intriguing properties of the feature-space attack, e.g. 1) the hidden layers with bigger receptive fields generate sparser perturbations, 2) the deeper hidden layers achieve higher attack success rates, and 3) different loss functions and different attacked layers will result in diverse perturbations. Experiments indicate that the proposed method is able to successfully attack different model architectures across various image scenes.

Quality Assessment of Free-viewpoint Videos by Quantifying the Elastic Changes of Multi-Scale Motion Trajectories

Virtual viewpoints synthesis is an essential process for many immersive applications including Free-viewpoint TV (FTV). A widely used technique for viewpoints synthesis is Depth-Image-Based-Rendering (DIBR) technique. However, such techniques may introduce challenging non-uniform spatial-temporal structure-related distortions. Most of the existing state-of-the-art quality metrics fail to handle these distortions, especially the temporal structure inconsistencies observed during the switch of different viewpoints. To tackle this problem, an elastic metric and multi-scale trajectory based video quality metric (EM-VQM) is proposed in this paper. Dense motion trajectory is first used as a proxy for selecting temporal sensitive regions, where local geometric distortions might significantly diminish the perceived quality. Afterwards, the amount of temporal structure inconsistencies and unsmooth viewpoints transitions are quantified by calculating 1) the amount of motion trajectory deformations with elastic metric and, 2) the spatial-temporal structural dissimilarity. According to the comprehensive experimental results on two FTV video datasets, the proposed metric outperforms the state-of-the-art metrics designed for free-viewpoint videos significantly and achieves a gain of 12.86% and 16.75% in terms of median Pearson linear correlation coefficient values on the two datasets compared to the best one, respectively.
