Instabilities in flow through and around a circular array of cylinders

This paper presents results of two-dimensional direct numerical simulations (DNS) and global linear stability analyses (based on mean flow and base flow) of a viscous incompressible flow past a circular array of cylinders with six-fold rotational symmetry. Six cylinder arrays, with varied patch density $ϕ= N_c (d/D)^2$ (with $N_c$ cylinders of diameter $d$ within a patch of diameter $D$) is investigated by adjusting the $N_c$ and its arrangement. The simulations cover a wide parameter space, with $ϕ$ ranging from $0.043$ to $0.315$, and the free-stream flow Reynolds numbers ($Re_D = U_{\infty} D / ν= < 300$ based on $D$ and the uniform incoming velocity $U_{\infty}$ and the kinematic viscosity $ν$). We focus on the onset of vortex shedding with variant $ϕ$, since the onset of global instabilities in such arrays has not been discussed earlier in the literature. For the patch diameters and solid volume fractions considered here, three distinct regimes are identified: (I) a low-$ϕ$ regime where cylinders behave nearly independently, the flow is stable, forming steady wake without vortex street; (II) an intermediate-$ϕ$ regime where $Re_c$ varies logarithmically with $ϕ$, resembling a porous medium; and (III) a high-$ϕ$ regime where $Re_c$ approaches that of a solid cylinder ($ϕ= 1$).

Dual-view Spatio-Temporal Feature Fusion with CNN-Transformer Hybrid Network for Chinese Isolated Sign Language Recognition

Due to the emergence of many sign language datasets, isolated sign language recognition (ISLR) has made significant progress in recent years. In addition, the development of various advanced deep neural networks is another reason for this breakthrough. However, challenges remain in applying the technique in the real world. First, existing sign language datasets do not cover the whole sign vocabulary. Second, most of the sign language datasets provide only single view RGB videos, which makes it difficult to handle hand occlusions when performing ISLR. To fill this gap, this paper presents a dual-view sign language dataset for ISLR named NationalCSL-DP, which fully covers the Chinese national sign language vocabulary. The dataset consists of 134140 sign videos recorded by ten signers with respect to two vertical views, namely, the front side and the left side. Furthermore, a CNN transformer network is also proposed as a strong baseline and an extremely simple but effective fusion strategy for prediction. Extensive experiments were conducted to prove the effectiveness of the datasets as well as the baseline. The results show that the proposed fusion strategy can significantly increase the performance of the ISLR, but it is not easy for the sequence-to-sequence model, regardless of whether the early-fusion or late-fusion strategy is applied, to learn the complementary features from the sign videos of two vertical views.

Seismic-ionospheric disturbances in ionospheric TEC and plasma parameters associated with the 14 July 2019 Mw 7.2 Laiwui earthquake detected by the GPS and CSES

In this study, with cross-valid analysis of total electron content (TEC) data of the global ionospheric map (GIM) from GPS and plasma parameters data recorded by China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite (CSES), signatures of seismic-ionospheric perturbations related to the 14 July 2019 Mw7.2 Laiwui earthquake were detected. After distinguishing the solar and geomagnetic activities, three positive temporal anomalies were found around the epicenter 1 day, 3 days and 8 days before the earthquake (14 July 2019) along with a negative anomaly 6 days after the earthquake, which also agrees well with the TEC spatial variations in latitude-longitude-time (LLT) maps. To further confirm the anomalies, the ionospheric plasma parameters (electron, O+and He+densities) recorded by the Langmuir probe (LAP) and Plasma Analyzer Package (PAP) onboard CSES were analyzed by using the moving mean method (MMM), which also presented remarkable enhancements along the orbits around the epicenter on day 2, day 4 and day 7 before the earthquake. To make the investigations more convincing, the disturbed orbits were compared with their corresponding four nearest revisiting orbits, whose results indeed indicate the existence of plasma parameters anomalies associated with the Laiwui earthquake. All these results illustrated that the GPS and CSES observed unusual ionospheric perturbations are highly associated with the Mw 7.2 Laiwui earthquake, which also strongly indicates the existence of pre-seismic ionospheric anomalies over the earthquake region
