Six Open Questions in Machine-Learned Interatomic Potential Foundation Models

Machine-learned interatomic potentials (MLIPs) have had a profound impact on molecular modelling in recent years, promising to resolve the long-standing tension between the scale and accuracy of simulations. There has been a proliferation of new models and designs, and recently the paradigm of ``foundational'' MLIPs has become prevalent. Broadly speaking, foundation models are trained on large diverse datasets and promise to work well for new systems with minimal updates required. However, in such a new and fast moving field, there are many unanswered questions. In this article, we set out to articulate and explore what we see as the most important among these questions. We start by developing a working definition for foundational MLIPs and use this definition to frame the subsequent open questions. Despite the rapid progress in the field of MLIP models, we believe that these are fundamental questions which will continue to define cutting edge research in MLIPs in the years to come.

Anisotropic electron-phonon interactions in 2D lead-halide perovskites

Two-dimensional hybrid organic-inorganic metal halide perovskites offer enhanced stability for perovskite-based applications. Their crystal structure's soft and ionic nature gives rise to strong interactions between charge carriers and ionic rearrangements. Here, we investigate the interaction of photo-generated electrons and ionic polarizations in single-crystal 2D perovskite butylammonium lead iodide, varying the inorganic lammelae thickness in the 2D single crystals. We determined the directionality of the transition dipole moments of the relevant phonon modes (in the 0.3-3 THz range) by angle-and-polarization dependent THz transmission measurements. We find a clear anisotropy of the in-plane photoconductivity, with a 10% reduction along the axis parallel with the transition dipole moment of the most strongly coupled phonon. Detailed calculations, based on Feynman polaron theory, indicate that the anisotropy originates from directional electron-phonon interactions.

Blind Motion Deblurring with Cycle Generative Adversarial Networks

Blind motion deblurring is one of the most basic and challenging problems in image processing and computer vision. It aims to recover a sharp image from its blurred version knowing nothing about the blur process. Many existing methods use Maximum A Posteriori (MAP) or Expectation Maximization (EM) frameworks to deal with this kind of problems, but they cannot handle well the figh frequency features of natural images. Most recently, deep neural networks have been emerging as a powerful tool for image deblurring. In this paper, we prove that encoder-decoder architecture gives better results for image deblurring tasks. In addition, we propose a novel end-to-end learning model which refines generative adversarial network by many novel training strategies so as to tackle the problem of deblurring. Experimental results show that our model can capture high frequency features well, and the results on benchmark dataset show that proposed model achieves the competitive performance.
