HarnessCompass: Guiding Automatic Harness Evolution toward Generalizable and Effective Agent Harnesses

Harness design plays a critical role in agent performance by shaping how large language models (LLMs) perceive, reason over, and act within executable environments. Recent work has proposed automatic harness evolution, which iteratively improves the harness from agent--environment interactions. However, existing methods often overfit to the evolution tasks, rely exclusively on trajectory-derived signals, and optimize harness components jointly, causing interference across components. We propose HarnessCompass, a novel automatic harness evolution framework built around constrained evolution, proactive feedback, and component-wise optimization. HarnessCompass first enforces global constraints on evolution, restricting modifications to task-agnostic harness changes that generalize beyond the evolution tasks. It then augments trajectory-derived evidence with proactive first-person feedback from the agent about harness usage, yielding richer signals for evolution. Finally, it decouples the optimization of different harness components before consolidating them into a unified harness, reducing cross-component interference while preserving component synergy. On SWE-bench Verified with GPT-5.4, HarnessCompass improves Pass@1 from 54\% to 66\% in only 5 evolution iterations, outperforming AHE in both effectiveness and evolution efficiency. In addition, the evolved harness transfers effectively to held-out tasks and other models, demonstrating substantially stronger generalization than prior automatic harness evolution methods.

On the H-atom abstractions from C1-C4 alcohols, aldehydes, and ethers by NO2: ab initio and comprehensive kinetic modeling

As crucial additives and intermediate, alcohols, ethers, and aldehydes play a significant role in the combustion process. However, the chemistry of NOXhydrocarbon interactions and the rate rules governing these interactions remain largely unexplored in this combustion system. To address this gap, this study provides a comprehensive investigation of H-atom abstraction by NO2 from C1-C4 alcohols, aldehydes and ethers that leads to the formation of 3 HNO2 isomers (i.e., transHONO, HNO2, and cisHONO), encompassing 9 hydrocarbons and 45 reactions. Utilizing the DLPNO CCSD(T)cc pVDZ M06 2X 6 311g d,p method, the electronic structures, single point energies, C H bond dissociation energies and 1 D hindered rotor potentials of the reactants, transition states, complexes and products in each reaction are computed. Adding these H atom abstractions to the chemical kinetic model improves the model reactivity and advances the ignition, as indicated by the reduction in ignition delay time for species that initially lacked these reactions. Further sensitivity and flux analyses highlight the crucial role of H atom abstraction by NO2. The findings underscore the importance of accurately incorporating these kinetic parameters into newly developed chemical models for alcohols, aldehydes, and ethers. Additionally, the study highlights the need for future experimental efforts to investigate the effects of NO2 on the combustion systems of these compounds.

High quality superconducting tunnel junction barriers using atomic layer deposition

We demonstrate a technique for creating high quality, large area tunnel junction barriers for normal-insulating- superconducting or superconducting-insulating-superconducting tunnel junctions. We use atomic layer depo- sition and an aluminum wetting layer to form a nanometer scale insulating barrier on gold films. Electronic transport measurements confirm that single-particle electron tunneling is the dominant transport mechanism, and the measured current-voltage curves demonstrate the viability of using these devices as self-calibrated, low temperature thermometers with a wide range of tunable parameters. The potential for fabricating high performance junction refrigerators is also highlighted.
