The Shocking Origin of the Flat $EE/BB$ Ratio

Polarized emission from dust and synchrotron radiation from the ISM are the dominant foregrounds for CMB polarization and are a major challenge for extracting the primordial signal on large angular scales. A key characteristic of the galactic foreground emission is its $EE/BB$ ratio. We argue that MHD shocks play an important role in setting the observed $EE/BB$ ratio. To support this, we first analyze quasi-linear magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) simulations to obtain an $EE/BB$ ratio that increases as $\sim k^2$, then show that with increasing energy injection rates, the $EE/BB$ ratio flattens to a value $\gtrsim 1$, approaching observational results. Looking at the distribution of the velocity divergence, a tail with power law $-7/2$ develops around the same injection rates where the $EE/BB$ ratio flattens. While the system becomes more isotropic, MHD shocks are intrinsically anisotropic and lead to the $E/B$ power asymmetry. We also observe total pressure balance among all our simulations, indicating slow wave dominance. Therefore, in the regime we consider, it is important to go beyond linear MHD equations to understand the foreground radiation.

Effective Field Theory and In-In Correlators

The predictions of inflation are usually defined in terms of equal time in-in correlation functions in an accelerating cosmological background. These same observables exist for quantum field theory in other spacetimes, including flat space. In this paper, we will explore how the Wilsonian renormalization group (RG) and effective field theory (EFT) apply to these observables in both flat and de Sitter space. Specifically, we show that matching the short- and long-distance calculations requires additional terms localized at the time of the measurement that are not captured by the effective action of the EFT. These additional terms only correct the local and semi-local terms in the EFT correlators. In flat space, we give an explicit demonstration by matching in-in correlators of light scalars interacting with a heavy field with the EFT result. We then show how these additional terms arise generically via exact RG. We also compare these explicit results in flat space with the corresponding theory in de Sitter and show that the local terms typically redshift away. Our results are closely related to momentum space entanglement that arises from tracing over short-wavelength modes.

Black hole superradiance with (dark) matter accretion

Studies of black hole superradiance often focus on the growth of a cloud in isolation, accompanied by the spin-down of the black hole. In this paper, we consider the additional effect of the accretion of matter and angular momentum from the environment. We show that, in many cases, the black hole evolves by drifting along the superradiance threshold, in which case the evolution of its parameters can be described analytically or semi-analytically. We quantify the conditions under which accretion can serve as a mechanism to increase the cloud-to-black hole mass ratio, beyond the standard maximum of about 10%. This occurs by a process we call over-superradiance, whereby accretion effectively feeds the superradiance cloud, by way of the black hole. We give two explicit examples: accretion from a vortex expected in wave dark matter and accretion from a baryonic disk. In the former case, we estimate the accretion rate by using an analytical fit to the asymptotic behavior of the confluent Heun function. Level transition, whereby one cloud level grows while the other shrinks, can be understood in a similar way.

An improved Noether's theorem for spacetime symmetries

We exploit an ambiguity somewhat hidden in Noether's theorem to derive systematically, for relativistic field theories, the stress-energy tensor's improvement terms that are associated with additional spacetime symmetries beyond translations. We work out explicitly the cases of Lorentz invariance, scale invariance, and full conformal invariance. The main idea is to use, directly in the translation Noether theorem, the fact that these additional symmetries can be thought of as suitably modulated translations. Compared to more standard derivations of the improvement terms, ours (1) unifies all different cases in a single framework, (2) involves no guesswork, (3) yields the desired algebraic properties (symmetry and/or tracelessness) of the stress-energy tensor off-shell, and (4) unifies the translation Noether theorem with those of the additional spacetime symmetries, yielding at the same time both the improved stress-energy tensor and the additional Noether currents.

A technical analog of the cosmological constant problem and a solution thereof

The near vanishing of the cosmological constant is one of the most puzzling open problems in theoretical physics. We consider a system, the so-called framid, that features a technically similar problem. Its stress-energy tensor has a Lorentz-invariant expectation value on the ground state, yet there are no standard, symmetry-based selection rules enforcing this, since the ground state spontaneously breaks boosts. We verify the Lorentz invariance of the expectation value in question with explicit one-loop computations. These, however, yield the expected result only thanks to highly nontrivial cancellations, which are quite mysterious from the low-energy effective theory viewpoint.

Scalar-tensor mixing from icosahedral inflation

We study the mixed scalar-tensor two-point function in icosahedral inflation. Within the regime of validity of the effective field theory, this has to be perturbatively small; in particular, much smaller than the scalar spectrum. However, it can be much bigger that the tensor spectrum itself. We discuss observational implications for the CMB temperature-polarization spectrum.

The coset construction for particles of arbitrary spin

When a Poincaré-invariant system spontaneously breaks continuous internal symmetries, Goldstones's theorem demands the existence of massless, spin-zero excitations in a one-to-one correspondence with the broken symmetry generators. When a system spontaneously breaks Poincaré symmetry, however, the kinds of excitations that satisfy Goldstone's theorem can be quite unusual. In particular, they may have any spin and need not be particles or even quasiparticles. The standard coset construction used to formulate effective actions of Goldstones, however, is rather restrictive and is incapable of generating the full spectrum of possibilities allowed by Goldstone's theorem. We propose a (partial) remedy to this problem by postulating a novel coset construction for systems that spontaneously break Poincaré symmetry. This new construction is capable of generating effective actions with a wide range of Goldstone excitations---including fermionic degrees of freedom---even when all symmetries are bosonic. To demonstrate it's utility, we focus on constructing effective actions for point particles of various spins. We recover the known result that a particle of spin $s$ requires an $\mathcal N=2s$ supersymmetric worldline reparameterization gauge symmetry, which we implement at the level of the coset construction. In the process, we discover that massless particles require a novel kind of inverse Higgs constraint that bears some resemblance to the dynamical inverse Higgs constraints that appear in certain fermi liquid effective field theories. We then consider particles that, in addition to quantum spin, have finite spatial extent and are free to rotate. We derive a novel action for such particles and find a `spin-orbital' coupling between the intrinsic quantum spin and the physical-rotation degrees of freedom.

Impact of QCD jets and heavy-quark production in cosmic-ray proton atmospheric showers up to 10$^{20}$ eV

The PYTHIA 6 Monte Carlo (MC) event generator, commonly used in collider physics, is interfaced for the first time with a fast transport simulation of a hydrogen atmosphere, with the same density as air, in order to study the properties of extended atmospheric showers (EAS) produced by cosmic ray protons with energies E$_{CR}\approx 10^{14}$--$10^{20}$ eV. At variance with the hadronic MC generators (EPOS-LHC, QGSJET, and SIBYLL) commonly used in cosmic-rays physics, PYTHIA includes the generation of harder hadronic jets and heavy (charm and bottom) quarks, thereby producing higher transverse momentum final particles, that could explain several anomalies observed in the data. The electromagnetic, hadronic, and muonic properties of EAS generated with various settings of PYTHIA 6, tuned to proton-proton data measured at the LHC, are compared to those from EPOS-LHC, QGSJET 01, QGSJET II, and SIBYLL 2.1. Despite their different underlying parton dynamics, the characteristics of the EAS generated with PYTHIA 6 are in between those predicted by the rest of MC generators. The only exceptions are the muonic components at large transverse distances from the shower axis, where PYTHIA predicts more activity than the rest of the models. Heavy-quark production, as implemented in this study for a hydrogen atmosphere, does not seem to play a key role in the EAS muon properties, pointing to nuclear effects as responsible of the muon anomalies observed in the air-shower data.
