Interacting donor-acceptor pairs as the origin of coupled spin-optical signals in hexagonal boron nitride

Optically addressable spin defects in hexagonal boron nitride hold promise for room-temperature quantum technologies, but their microscopic identities remain largely unknown. Using first principles calculations, we show that coupled spin optical signals arise from interacting donor acceptor pairs, not the commonly believed isolated defects. Intra and inter pair separations control charge transfer, electronic structure, and spin coupling, thereby greatly modulating zero phonon lines, phonon sidebands, lifetimes, and the sign of optically detected magnetic resonance contrast. Importantly, we identify two distinct charge-state-dependent coupling regimes and extend this picture to correlated defect ensembles, explaining the wide diversity of experimental observations. Our results establish a microscopic framework for coupled defect behavior and provide design principles for spin-active quantum emitters in wide bandgap semiconductors.

Optimizing the depth-dependent nitrogen-vacancy center quantum sensor in diamane

Negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond is the representative solid state defect qubit for quantum information science, offering long coherence time at room temperature. To achieve high sensitivity and spatial resolution, shallow NV center near the surface are preferred. However, shallow NV center suffers from surface states and spin noise which reduce the photostability and coherence time. In this work, we systematically study the NV center in recently reported two-dimensional diamond, known as diamane--using first-principles calculations. We show that the quantum confinement in finite-layer diamane, with appropriate surface passivation, could significantly modify the band structure. In particular, we identify oxygen surface termination capable of hosting NV center in diamane while optimizing photostability compared to bulk diamond. Furthermore, layer-dependent NV center demonstrates tunable zero-phonon-line and suppressed phonon side band, while retaining long coherence time. Our findings highlight diamane as a promising platform for NV-based quantum information processing with improved optical properties and stability

Spin-resolved counting statistics as a sensitive probe of spin correlation in transport through a quantum dot spin valve

We investigate the noise in spin transport through a single quantum dot (QD) tunnel coupled to ferromagnetic electrodes with noncollinear magnetizations. Based on a spin-resolved quantum master equation, auto- and cross-correlations of spin-resolved currents are analyzed to reveal the underlying spin transport dynamics and characteristics for various polarizations. We find the currents of majority and minority spins could be strongly autocorrelated despite uncorrelated charge transfer. The interplay between tunnel coupling and the Coulomb interaction gives rise to an exchange magnetic field, leading to the precession of the accumulated spin in the QD. It strongly suppresses the bunching of spin tunneling events and results in a unique double-peak structure in the noise of the net spin current. The spin autocorrelation is found to be susceptible to magnetization alignments, which may serve as a sensitive tool to measure the magnetization directions between the ferromagnetic electrodes.
