A Hurewicz Theorem for $RO(C_2)$-graded Equivariant Homology Governed by Vector Fields on Spheres

We determine the $RO(C_2)$-graded Hurewicz images of the $C_2$-equivariant Eilenberg--MacLane spectra $H\underline{\mathbb F_2}$, $H\underline{\mathbb Z}$ and $H\underline{A}$, where $\underline{\mathbb F_2}$ and $\underline{\mathbb Z}$ denote the constant Mackey functors with values in $\mathbb F_2$ and $\mathbb Z$, respectively, and $\underline A$ denotes the Burnside Mackey functor. Surprisingly, the answer is closely tied to the problem of vector fields on spheres: the element $\frac{\theta}{\rho^k\tau^n}$ in the negative cone of the homotopy groups of $H\underline{\mathbb F_2}$ lies in the Hurewicz image if and only if $S^n$ admits $k$ linearly independent vector fields. Moreover, using the Generalized Leibniz Rule and the Generalized Mahowald Trick introduced by arXiv:2412.10879, we show that there are nonzero Adams differentials of arbitrary length supported by filtration-$0$ elements in the genuine $C_2$-equivariant Adams spectral sequence.

Periodicity and finite complexity in higher real $K$-theories

In this paper, we establish periodicity results for higher real $K$-theories at all heights and for all finite subgroups of the Morava stabilizer group at the prime 2. We further analyze the $RO(G)$-periodicity lattice of the height-$h$ Lubin--Tate theory, proving new $RO(G)$-graded periodicities and explicit finiteness results for the $RO(G)$-graded homotopy groups of $E_h$. Together, these results provide a foundation for both the structural and computational study of higher real $K$-theories.

Picard groups of quotient ring spectra

We develop tools to study Picard groups of quotients of ring spectra by a finitely generated ideal, which we use to show that $\mathrm{Pic}(\mathrm{E}_n/I) = \mathbb{Z}/2$, where $\mathrm{E}_n$ is a Lubin--Tate theory and $I$ is an ideal generated by suitable powers of a regular sequence. We apply this to obtain spectral sequences computing Picard groups of $\mathrm{K}(n)$-local generalized Moore algebras, and make some preliminary computations including the height $1$ case.

Exotic periodic phenomena in the cohomology of the moduli stack of $1$-dimensional formal group laws

We describe some periodic structure in the cohomology of the moduli stack of 1-dimensional formal group laws, also known as the $E_2$-page of the classical Adams--Novikov spectral sequence. This structure is distinct from the familiar $v_n$-periodicities, and it displays interesting number-theoretic properties. Our techniques involve the $\mathbb{C}$-motivic Adams spectral sequence, and we obtain analogous periodic structure in $\mathbb{C}$-motivic stable homotopy.

A sparse periodic family in the cohomology of the $\mathbb{C}$-motivic Steenrod algebra

We study a particular family of elements in the cohomology of the $\mathbb{C}$-motivic Steenrod algebra, also known as the $\mathbb{C}$-motivic Adams $E_2$-page. This family exhibits unusual periodicity properties, and it is related both to $h_1$-localization and to the algebraic Hurewicz image of the motivic modular forms spectrum $\mathrm{mmf}$.

The inverse limit topology and profinite descent on Picard groups in $K(n)$-local homotopy theory

In this paper, we study profinite descent theory for Picard groups in $K(n)$-local homotopy theory through their inverse limit topology. Building upon Burklund's result on the multiplicative structures of generalized Moore spectra, we prove that the module category over a $K(n)$-local commutative ring spectrum is equivalent to the limit of its base changes by a tower of generalized Moore spectra of type $n$. As a result, the $K(n)$-local Picard groups are endowed with a natural inverse limit topology. This topology allows us to identify the entire $E_1$ and $E_2$-pages of a descent spectral sequence for Picard spaces of $K(n)$-local profinite Galois extensions. Our main examples are $K(n)$-local Picard groups of homotopy fixed points $E_n^{hG}$ of the Morava $E$-theory $E_n$ for all closed subgroups $G$ of the Morava stabilizer group $\mathbb{G}_n$. The $G=\mathbb{G}_n$ case has been studied by Heard and Mor. At height $1$, we compute Picard groups of $E_1^{hG}$ for all closed subgroups $G$ of $\mathbb{G}_1=\mathbb{Z}_p^\times$ at all primes as a Mackey functor.

A spectrum-level splitting of the $ku_\mathbb{R}$-cooperations algebra

In the 1980's, Mahowald and Kane used integral Brown--Gitler spectra to decompose $ku \wedge ku$ as a sum of finitely generated $ku$-module spectra. This splitting, along with an analogous decomposition of $ko \wedge ko,$ led to a great deal of progress in stable homotopy computations and understanding of $v_1$-periodicity in the stable homotopy groups of spheres. In this paper, we construct a $C_2$-equivariant lift of Mahowald and Kane's splitting of $ku \wedge ku$. We also describe the resulting $C_2$-equivariant splitting in terms of $C_2$-equivariant Adams covers and record an analogous splitting for $H\underline{\mathbb{Z}} \wedge H \underline{\mathbb{Z}}$. Along the way, we give complete computations of the $ku_{\mathbb{R}}$ and $H \mathbb{Z}$ operations and cooperations algebras.

Vanishing lines in chromatic homotopy theory

We show that at the prime 2, for any height $h$ and any finite subgroup $G \subset \mathbb{G}_h$ of the Morava stabilizer group, the $RO(G)$-graded homotopy fixed point spectral sequence for the Lubin--Tate spectrum $E_h$ has a strong horizontal vanishing line of filtration $N_{h, G}$, a specific number depending on $h$ and $G$. It is a consequence of the nilpotence theorem that such homotopy fixed point spectral sequences all admit strong horizontal vanishing lines at some finite filtration. Here, we establish specific bounds for them. Our bounds are sharp for all the known computations of $E_h^{hG}$. Our approach involves investigating the effect of the Hill--Hopkins--Ravenel norm functor on the slice differentials. As a result, we also show that the $RO(G)$-graded slice spectral sequence for $(N_{C_2}^{G}\bar{v}_h)^{-1}BP^{(\!(G)\!)}$ shares the same horizontal vanishing line at filtration $N_{h, G}$. As an application, we utilize this vanishing line to establish a bound on the orientation order $Θ(h, G)$, the smallest number such that the $Θ(h, G)$-fold direct sum of any real vector bundle is $E_h^{hG}$-orientable.

$RO(G)$-graded homotopy fixed point spectral sequence for height $2$ Morava $E$-theory

We consider $G=Q_8,SD_{16},G_{24},$ and $G_{48}$ as finite subgroups of the Morava stabilizer group which acts on the height $2$ Morava $E$-theory $\mathbf{E}_2$ at the prime $2$. We completely compute the $G$-homotopy fixed point spectral sequences of $\mathbf{E}_2$. Our computation uses recently developed equivariant techniques since Hill, Hopkins, and Ravenel. We also compute the $(*-σ_i)$-graded $Q_8$- and $SD_{16}$-homotopy fixed point spectral sequences, where $σ_i$ is a non-trivial one-dimensional representation of $Q_8$.

A Thom Spectrum Model for $C_2$-Integral Brown--Gitler Spectra

A Thom spectrum model for a $C_2$-equivariant analogue of integral Brown--Gitler spectra is established and shown to have a multiplicative property. The $C_2$-equivariant spectra constructed enjoy properties analogous to classical nonequivariant integral Brown--Gitler spectra and thus may prove useful for producing $C_2$-equivariant analogues of splittings of $BP \langle 1 \rangle \wedge BP \langle 1 \rangle$ and $bo \wedge bo.$

The $\mathbb C$-motivic Adams-Novikov spectral sequence for topological modular forms

We analyze the $\mathbb{C}$-motivic (and classical) Adams-Novikov spectral sequence for the $\mathbb{C}$-motivic modular forms spectrum $\mathit{mmf}$ (and for the classical topological modular forms spectrum $\mathit{tmf}$). We primarily use purely algebraic techniques, with a few exceptions. Along the way, we settle a previously unresolved detail about the multiplicative structure of the homotopy groups of $\mathit{tmf}$.

Tate blueshift and vanishing for Real oriented cohomology

We study transchromatic phenomena for the Tate construction of Real oriented cohomology theories. First, we show that after suitable completion, the Tate construction with respect to a trivial $\mathbb{Z}/2$-action on height $n$ Real Johnson--Wilson theory splits into a wedge of height $n-1$ Real Johnson--Wilson theories. This is the first example of Tate blueshift at all chromatic heights outside of the complex oriented setting. Second, we prove that the Tate construction with respect to a trivial finite group action on Real Morava K-theory vanishes, refining a classical Tate vanishing result of Greenlees--Sadofsky. In the course of proving these results, we develop some ideas in equivariant chromatic homotopy theory (e.g., completions of module spectra over Real cobordism, $C_2$-equivariant chromatic Bousfield localizations) and apply the parametrized Tate construction.

Invertible spectra of finite type

We describe the necessary and sufficient numerical condition when an element $X$ in the Picard group of $K(2)$-local category at prime $p \geqslant 5$ is of finite type, i.e., $π_kX$ is finitely generated as a $\mathbb{Z}_p$-module for all $k \in \mathbb{Z}$.

Picard groups and duality for Real Morava $E$-theories

We show, at the prime 2, that the Picard group of invertible modules over $E_n^{hC_2}$ is cyclic. Here, $E_n$ is the height $n$ Lubin--Tate spectrum and its $C_2$-action is induced from the formal inverse of its associated formal group law. We further show that $E_n^{hC_2}$ is Gross--Hopkins self-dual and determine the exact shift. Our results generalize the well-known results when $n = 1$.

Hurewicz Images of Real Bordism Theory and Real Johnson-Wilson Theories

We show that the Hopf elements, the Kervaire classes, and the $\barκ$-family in the stable homotopy groups of spheres are detected by the Hurewicz map from the sphere spectrum to the $C_2$-fixed points of the Real Brown-Peterson spectrum. A subset of these families is detected by the $C_2$-fixed points of Real Johnson-Wilson theory $E\mathbb{R}(n)$, depending on $n$.
