Stability of the Weak Martingale Optimal Transport Problem

While many questions in (robust) finance can be posed in the martingale optimal transport (MOT) framework, others require to consider also non-linear cost functionals. Following the terminology of Gozlan, Roberto, Samson and Tetali this corresponds to weak martingale optimal transport (WMOT). In this article we establish stability of WMOT which is important since financial data can give only imprecise information on the underlying marginals. As application, we deduce the stability of the superreplication bound for VIX futures as well as the stability of stretched Brownian motion and we derive a monotonicity principle for WMOT.

Faking Brownian motion with continuous Markov martingales

Hamza-Klebaner posed the problem of constructing martingales with Brownian marginals that differ from Brownian motion, so called fake Brownian motions. Besides its theoretical appeal, the problem represents the quintessential version of the ubiquitous fitting problem in mathematical finance where the task is to construct martingales that satisfy marginal constraints imposed by market data. Non-continuous solutions to this challenge were given by Madan-Yor, Hamza-Klebaner, Hobson, and Fan-Hamza-Klebaner whereas continuous (but non-Markovian) fake Brownian motions were constructed by Oleszkiewicz, Albin, Baker-Donati-Yor, Hobson, Jourdain-Zhou. In contrast it is known from Gyöngy, Dupire, and ultimately Lowther that Brownian motion is the unique continuous strong Markov martingale with Brownian marginals. We took this as a challenge to construct examples of a "very fake'' Brownian motion, that is, continuous Markov martingales with Brownian marginals that miss out only on the strong Markov property.

From Bachelier to Dupire via Optimal Transport

Famously mathematical finance was started by Bachelier in his 1900 PhD thesis where - among many other achievements - he also provides a formal derivation of the Kolmogorov forward equation. This forms also the basis for Dupire's (again formal) solution to the problem of finding an arbitrage free model calibrated to the volatility surface. The later result has rigorous counterparts in the theorems of Kellerer and Lowther. In this survey article we revisit these hallmarks of stochastic finance, highlighting the role played by some optimal transport results in this context.

Disease Momentum: Estimating the Reproduction Number in the Presence of Superspreading

A primary quantity of interest in the study of infectious diseases is the average number of new infections that an infected person produces. This so-called reproduction number has significant implications for the disease progression. There has been increasing literature suggesting that superspreading, the significant variability in number of new infections caused by individuals, plays an important role in the spread of SARS-CoV-2. In this paper, we consider the effect that such superspreading has on the estimation of the reproduction number and subsequent estimates of future cases. Accordingly, we employ a simple extension to models currently used in the literature to estimate the reproduction number and present a case-study of the progression of COVID-19 in Austria. Our models demonstrate that the estimation uncertainty of the reproduction number increases with superspreading and that this improves the performance of prediction intervals. Of independent interest is the derivation of a transparent formula that connects the extent of superspreading to the width of credible intervals for the reproduction number. This serves as a valuable heuristic for understanding the uncertainty surrounding diseases with superspreading.

Stability of martingale optimal transport and weak optimal transport

Under mild regularity assumptions, the transport problem is stable in the following sense: if a sequence of optimal transport plans $π_1, π_2, \ldots$ converges weakly to a transport plan $π$, then $π$ is also optimal (between its marginals). Alfonsi, Corbetta and Jourdain asked whether the same property is true for the martingale transport problem. This question seems particularly pressing since martingale transport is motivated by robust finance where data is naturally noisy. On a technical level, stability in the martingale case appears more intricate than for classical transport since optimal transport plans $π$ are not characterized by a `monotonicity'-property of their support. In this paper we give a positive answer and establish stability of the martingale transport problem. As a particular case, this recovers the stability of the left curtain coupling established by Juillet. An important auxiliary tool is an unconventional topology which takes the temporal structure of martingales into account. Our techniques also apply to the the weak transport problem introduced by Gozlan, Roberto, Samson and Tetali.

Applications of weak transport theory

Motivated by applications to geometric inequalities, Gozlan, Roberto, Samson, and Tetali introduced a transport problem for `weak' cost functionals. Basic results of optimal transport theory can be extended to this setup in remarkable generality. In this article we collect several problems from different areas that can be recast in the framework of weak transport theory, namely: the Schrödinger problem, the Brenier-Strassen theorem, optimal mechanism design, linear transfers and semimartingale transport. Our viewpoint yields a unified approach and often allows to strengthen the original results.

Existence, Duality, and Cyclical monotonicity for weak transport costs

The optimal weak transport problem has recently been introduced by Gozlan et.\ al. We provide general existence and duality results for these problems on arbitrary Polish spaces, as well as a necessary and sufficient optimality criterion in the spirit of cyclical monotonicity. As an application we extend the Brenier-Strassen Theorem of Gozlan-Juillet to general probability measures on $R^d$ under minimal assumptions. A driving idea behind our proofs is to consider the set of transport plans with a new (`adapted') topology which seems better suited for the weak transport problem and allows to carry out arguments which are close to the proofs in the classical setup.

Weak monotone rearrangement on the line

Weak optimal transport has been recently introduced by Gozlan et al. The original motivation stems from the theory of geometric inequalities; further applications concern numerics of martingale optimal transport and stability in mathematical finance. In this note we provide a complete geometric characterization of the 'weak' version of the classical monotone rearrangement between measures on the real line, complementing earlier results of Alfonsi, Corbetta, and Jourdain.
