Bistable Quad-Nets Composed of Four-Bar Linkages

We study a novel type of mechanical structures, composed of spatial four-bar linkages, that are bistable, that is, they allow for two distinct configurations. These structures have an interpretation as quad nets in the Study quadric which we use to prove existence of assemblies with an unbounded number of links and joints. We propose a purely geometric construction of such objects, starting from infinitesimally flexible quad nets in Euclidean space and applying Whiteley de-averaging. This point of view situates the problem within the broader framework of discrete differential geometry and enables the construction of bistable structures from well-known classes of quad nets, such as discrete minimal surfaces. In contrast to many other construction methods for bistable structures, our approach does not rely on numerical optimization and it allows for simple control of relevant geometric parameters such as axis positions and snap angles.

Discrete curve theory in space forms: planar elastic and area-constrained elastic curves

We propose a notion of discrete elastic and area-constrained elastic curves in 2-dimensional space forms. Our definition extends the well-known discrete Euclidean curvature equation to space forms and reflects various geometric properties known from their smooth counterparts. Special emphasis is paid to discrete flows built from Bäcklund transformations in the respective space forms. The invariants of the flows form a hierarchy of curves and we show that discrete elastic and constrained elastic curves can be characterized as elements of this hierarchy. This work also includes an introductory chapter on discrete curve theory in space forms, where we find discrete Frenet-type formulas and describe an associated family related to a fundamental theorem.

Isothermic nets with spherical parameter lines from discrete holomorphic maps

We prove that all discrete isothermic nets with a family of planar or spherical lines of curvature can be obtained from special discrete holomorphic maps via lifted-folding. This novel approach is a generalization and discretization of a classical method to create planar curvature lines on smooth surfaces. In particular, this technique provides an efficient way to construct discrete isothermic topological tori composed of fundamental pieces from discrete periodic holomorphic maps.

Differential geometry of space curves: Forgotten chapters

We study evolutes and involutes of space curves. Although much of the material presented is not new and can be found in classic treatises, we believe that a modern and unified treatment, complemented with several novel observations, may be useful. The results are illustrated with the help of computer graphics, a tool that was not not available to the classical geometers.

Dupin cyclidic systems geometrically revisited

The induced metrics of Dupin cyclidic systems, that is, orthogonal coordinate systems with Dupin cyclides and spheres as coordinate surfaces, were provided by Darboux. Here we take a more geometric point of view and discuss how Dupin cyclides and Lamé families of Dupin cyclidic systems can be obtained by suitably evolving an initial circle or a Dupin cyclide, respectively. This approach reveals that those Lamé families are given by parallel surfaces in various space forms.

Notes on flat fronts in hyperbolic space

We give a short introduction to discrete flat fronts in hyperbolic space and prove that any discrete flat front in the mixed area sense admits a Weierstrass representation.

Discrete cyclic systems and circle congruences

We discuss integrable discretizations of 3-dimensional cyclic systems, that is, orthogonal coordinate systems with one family of circular coordinate lines. In particular, the underlying circle congruences are investigated in detail, and characterized by the existence of a certain flat connection. Within the developed framework, discrete cyclic systems with a family of discrete flat fronts in hyperbolic space and discrete cyclic systems, where all coordinate surfaces are discrete Dupin cyclides, are investigated.

Constrained elastic curves and surfaces with spherical curvature lines

In this paper we consider surfaces with one or two families of spherical curvature lines. We show that every surface with a family of spherical curvature lines can locally be generated by a pair of initial data: a suitable curve of Lie sphere transformations and a spherical Legendre curve. We then provide conditions on the initial data for which such a surface is Lie applicable, an integrable class of surfaces that includes cmc and pseudospherical surfaces. In particular we show that a Lie applicable surface with exactly one family of spherical curvature lines must be generated by the lift of a constrained elastic curve in some space form. In view of this goal, we give a Lie sphere geometric characterisation of constrained elastic curves via polynomial conserved quantities of a certain family of connections.

The Ribaucour families of discrete R-congruences

While a generic smooth Ribaucour sphere congruence admits exactly two envelopes, a discrete R-congruence gives rise to a 2-parameter family of discrete enveloping surfaces. The main purpose of this paper is to gain geometric insights into this ambiguity. In particular, discrete R-congruences that are enveloped by discrete channel surfaces and discrete Legendre maps with one family of spherical curvature lines are discussed.

A duality for Guichard nets

In this paper we study G-surfaces, a rather unknown surface class originally defined by Calapso, and show that the coordinate surfaces of a Guichard net are G-surfaces. Based on this observation, we present distinguished Combescure transformations that provide a duality for Guichard nets. Another class of special Combescure transformations is then used to construct a Bäcklund-type transformation for Guichard nets. In this realm a permutability theorem for the dual systems is proven.

Discrete channel surfaces

We present a definition of discrete channel surfaces in Lie sphere geometry, which reflects several properties for smooth channel surfaces. Various sets of data, defined at vertices, on edges or on faces, are associated with a discrete channel surface that may be used to reconstruct the underlying particular discrete Legendre map. As an application we investigate isothermic discrete channel surfaces and prove a discrete version of Vessiot's Theorem.

Channel surfaces in Lie sphere geometry

We discuss channel surfaces in the context of Lie sphere geometry and characterise them as certain $Ω_{0}$-surfaces. Since $Ω_{0}$-surfaces possess a rich transformation theory, we study the behaviour of channel surfaces under these transformations. Furthermore, by using certain Dupin cyclide congruences, we characterise Ribaucour pairs of channel surfaces.
