Solvable Lie algebras and graphs

We define a solvable extension of the graph 2-step nilpotent Lie algebras of [5] by adding elements corresponding to the 3-cliques of the graph. We study some of their basic properties and we prove that two such Lie algebras are isomorphic if and only if their graphs are isomorphic. We also briefly discuss some metric properties, providing examples of homogeneous spaces with nonpositive curvature operator and solvsolitons.

Algebraic dimension of complex nilmanifolds

Let M be a complex nilmanifold, that is, a compact quotient of a nilpotent Lie group endowed with an invariant complex structure by a discrete lattice. A holomorphic differential on M is a closed, holomorphic 1-form. We show that $a(M)\leq k$, where $a(M)$ is the algebraic dimension $a(M)$ (i.e. the transcendence degree of the field of meromorphic functions) and $k$ is the dimension of the space of holomorphic differentials. We prove a similar result about meromorphic maps to Kahler manifolds.

Poisson structures on twistor spaces of hyperkaehler and HKT manifolds

We characterize HKT structure in terms of nondegenrate complex Poisson bivector on hypercomplex manifold. We extend the characterization to the twistor space. After considering the flat case in detail, we show that the twistor space of hyperkaehler manifold admits a holomorphic Poisson structure. We briefly mention the relation to quaternionic and hypercomplex deformations on tori and K3 surfaces

Existence of HKT metrics on hypercomplex manifolds of real dimension 8

A hypercomplex manifold $M$ is a manifold equipped with three complex structures satisfying quaternionic relations. Such a manifold admits a canonical torsion-free connection preserving the quaternion action, called Obata connection. A quaternionic Hermitian metric is a Riemannian metric on which is invariant with respect to unitary quaternions. Such a metric is called HKT if it is locally obtained as a Hessian of a function averaged with quaternions. HKT metric is a natural analogue of a Kahler metric on a complex manifold. We push this analogy further, proving a quaternionic analogue of Buchdahl-Lamari's theorem for complex surfaces. Buchdahl and Lamari have shown that a complex surface M admits a Kahler structure iff $b_1(M)$ is even. We show that a hypercomplex manifold M with Obata holonomy $SL(2,{\mathbb H})$ admits an HKT structure iff $H^{0,1}(M)=H^1({\cal O}_M)$ is even.

Calibrations in hyperkahler geometry

We describe a family of calibrations arising naturally on a hyperkähler manifold $M$. These calibrations calibrate the holomorphic Lagrangian, holomorphic isotropic and holomorphic coisotropic subvarieties. When $M$ is an HKT (hyperkaehler with torsion) manifold with holonomy $SL(n, {\Bbb H})$, we construct another family of calibrations $Φ_i$, which calibrates holomorphic Lagrangian and holomorphic coisotropic subvarieties. The calibrations $Φ_i$ are (generally speaking) not parallel with respect to any torsion-free connection on $M$.

Compact complex surfaces with geometric structures related to split quaternions

We study the problem of existence of geometric structures on compact complex surfaces that are related to split quaternions. These structures, called para-hypercomplex, para-hyperhermitian and para-hyperkähler are analogs of the hypercomplex, hyperhermitian and hyperkähler structures in the definite case. We show that a compact oriented 4-manifold carries a para-hyperkähler structure iff it has a metric of split signature together with two parallel, orthogonal and null vector fields. Every compact complex surface admiting a para-hyperhermitian structure has vanishing first Chern class and we show that, unlike the definite case, many of these surfaces carry infinite dimensional families of such structures. We provide also compact examples of complex surfaces with para-hyperhermitian structures which are not locally conformally para-hyperkähler. Finally, we discuss the problem of non-existence of para-hyperhermitian structures on Inoue surfaces of type $S^0$ and provide a list of compact complex surfaces which could carry para-hypercomplex structures.

Tamed Symplectic forms and Generalized Geometry

We show that symplectic forms taming complex structures on compact manifolds are related to special types of almost generalized Kähler structures. By considering the commutator $Q$ of the two associated almost complex structures $J_{\pm}$, we prove that if either the manifold is 4-dimensional or the distribution ${Im} \, Q$ is involutive, then the manifold can be expressed locally as a disjoint union of twisted Poisson leaves.

Geometry of compact complex homogeneous spaces with vanishing first Chern class

We prove that any compact complex homogeneous space with vanishing first Chern class after an appropriate deformation of the complex structure admits a homogeneous Calabi-Yau with torsion structure, provided that it also has an invariant volume form. A description of such spaces among the homogeneous C-spaces is given as well as many examples and a classification in the 3-dimensional case. We calculate the cohomology ring of some of the examples and show that in dimension 14 there are infinitely many simply-connected spaces with the same Hodge numbers and torsional Chern classes admitting such structure. We provide also an example solving the Strominger's equations in heterotic string theory.

Para-hyperhermitian surfaces

In this note we discuss the problem of existence of para-hyperhermitian structures on compact complex surfaces. We construct examples of para-hypercomplex structures on Inoue surfaces of type $S^{-}$ which do not admit compatible metrics.

Geometry of neutral metrics in dimesnion four

The purpose of this article is to review some recent results on the geometry of neutral signature metrics in dimension four and their twistor spaces. The following topics are considered: Neutral Kähler and hyperkähler surfaces, Walker metrics, Neutral anti-self-dual 4-manifolds and projective structures, Twistor spaces of neutral metrics.

Deformations of hypercomplex structures related to Heisenberg groups

Let $X$ be a compact quotient of the product of the real Heisenberg group $H_{4m+1}$ of dimension $4m+1$ and the 3-dimensional real Euclidean space $\bR^3$. A left invariant hypercomplex structure on $H_{4m+1}\times \bR^3$ descends onto the compact quotient $X$. The space $X$ is a hyperholomorphic fibration of 4-tori over a $4m$-torus. We calculate the parameter space and obstructions to deformations of this hypercomplex structure on $X$. Using our calculations we show that all small deformations generate invariant hypercomplex structures on $X$ but not all of them arise from deformations of the lattice. This is in contrast to the deformations on the $4m$-torus.

On some properties of the manifolds with skew-symmetric torsion and holonomy SU(n) and Sp(n)

In this paper we provide examples of hypercomplex manifolds which do not carry HKT structure. We also prove that the existence of HKT structure is not stable under small deformations. Similarly we provide examples of compact complex manifolds with vanishing first Chern class which do not admit a Hermitian structure with restricted holonomy of its Bismut connection in SU(n). Again we prove that such property is not stable under small deformations.

Reduction of HKT-Structures

KT-geometry is the geometry of a Hermitian connection whose torsion is a 3-form. HKT-geometry is the geometry of a hyper-Hermitian connection whose torsion is a 3-form. We identify non-trivial conditions for a reduction theory for these types of geometry.

Reduction of Sasakian manifolds

We show that the contact reduction can be specialized to Sasakian manifolds. We link this Sasakian reduction to Kähler reduction by considering the Kähler cone over a Sasakian manifold. We present examples of Sasakian manifolds obtained by $S^1$ reduction of standard Sasakian spheres.

Geometry of Hyper-Kähler Connections with Torsion

The internal space of a N=4 supersymmetric model with Wess-Zumino term has a connection with totally skew-symmetric torsion and holonomy in $\SP(n)$. We study the mathematical background of this type of connections. In particular, we relate it to classical Hermitian geometry construct homogeneous as well as inhomogeneous examples, characterize it in terms of holomorphic data, develop its potential theory and reduction theory.

The Dolbeault operator on Hermitian spin surfaces

We consider the Dolbeault operator of $K^{1/2}$ -- the square root of the canonical line bundle which determines the spin structure of a compact Hermitian spin surface (M,g,J). We prove that the Dolbeault cohomology groups of $K^{1/2}$ vanish if the scalar curvature of g is non-negative and non-identically zero. Moreover, we estimate the first eigenvalue of the Dolbeault operator when the conformal scalar curvature k is non-negative and when k is positive. In the first case we give a complete list of limiting manifolds and in the second one we give non-Kähler examples of limiting manifolds.
