String probes, simple currents, and the no global symmetries conjecture

Center one-form symmetries in consistent quantum gravity theories are expected to be either broken or gauged, thereby determining the global form of the gauge group. We shed light on this expectation from the perspective of distinguished extended objects, which we denote by faithful string probes, for which the gauge symmetry is realized as a holomorphic current algebra. We argue that the worldsheet counterpart of gauged center one-form symmetries is the existence of chiral simple currents extending the current algebra. Accordingly, we show that the consistency condition for such extensions reproduce and generalize known field theoretic and geometric obstructions to the gauging of center one-form symmetries in six and eight dimensions. We verify this picture in a number of examples arising from heterotic string compactifications, and apply it to infer the gauge group topology of a recently identified class of six-dimensional models with no known F-theoretic realization. In 6d supergavity, our results also clarify an observation of Kim and Vafa on the existence of BPS particles required for consistency upon circle reduction: these particles arise from worldsheet simple currents whose existence is dictated by the presence of a gauged center one-form symmetry. Intriguingly, in several models across different dimensions we find composite higher-spin chiral currents beyond the current algebra, hinting at a stringy generalization of center one-form symmetries in the bulk.

Rational points in the 6d supergravity landscape and simple current extensions

We investigate a recently identified class of six-dimensional supergravities without tensor multiplets whose primitive BPS strings are described by a rational superconformal field theory. Rationality imposes severe constraints on the supersymmetric spectrum of their BPS strings and provides an effective way to study this class of models, despite the absence of a conventional geometric realization within F-theory. We find that, in each model, the rationality constraints are nontrivially satisfied and uniquely determine the elliptic genus of the strings, providing a new consistency criterion satisfied by this exotic class of candidate quantum gravity theories. In all cases, the left-moving Kac-Moody-Virasoro algebra on the string worldsheet is extended by higher-spin currents, corresponding to discrete symmetries of the 2d SCFT. This allows us to determine the global form of the six-dimensional gauge group for all the members of this class of models.

M5 branes on ADE singularities: BPS spectrum and partition functions

The dynamics of a stack of M5 branes probing a transverse multi-centered Taub-NUT space are described by a class of 6d $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ superconformal field theories known as the M-string orbifold SCFTs. We determine the equivariant partition functions for this class of theories on a geometric background of type $T^2\times\mathbb{C}^2/\Gamma$, where $\Gamma \in\{\mathcal{C}_N,\mathcal{Q}_N, \mathcal{T},\mathcal{O},\mathcal{I}\}$ is an arbitrary finite subgroup of $SU(2)$. The partition functions are built out of contributions from BPS strings as well as BPS particles that arise upon putting the 6d theory on a circle. We find that BPS particle contributions can be expressed in terms of $\Gamma$-covariant Hilbert series which count holomorphic sections of vector bundles on the orbifold singularity with monodromy specified by an irreducible representation of $\Gamma$. The BPS string contributions, on the other hand, are given by the elliptic genera of 2d $\mathcal{N}=(0,4)$ $\Gamma$-dressed quiver gauge theories, obtained by stacking Kronheimer-Nakajima quivers of type $\Gamma$ between interfaces that support current algebras for the McKay dual affine Lie algebra $\widehat{\mathfrak{g}}$. We obtain explicit expressions for the elliptic genera of arbitrary BPS string configurations corresponding to fractional instanton strings on $\mathbb{C}^2/\Gamma$, and for the case of star-shaped quivers of type $\Gamma\in\{\mathcal{Q}_4,\mathcal{T},\mathcal{O},\mathcal{I}\}$ we give a prescription to compute the elliptic genera by gluing 2d analogues of Gaiotto and Witten's $T[SU(N)]$ theories.

The hyperplane string, RCFTs, and the swampland

Six dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ supergravity features BPS strings whose properties encode highly nontrivial information about the parent 6d theory. We focus on a distinguished set of theories whose string charge lattice is one-dimensional. In geometric theories, the generator of the lattice arises from a D3 brane wrapping the hyperplane class in $\mathbb{P}^2$. This hyperplane string is expected to remain stable even when one ventures beyond the geometric regime where it becomes challenging to verify which candidate 6d theories belong to the swampland. We identify five 6d models which from the perspective of the hyperplane string deviate the most from being geometric. For these theories we are able to provide an exact description of the left-moving sector of the hyperplane string worldsheet theory in terms of a rational conformal field theory and provide evidence for their consistency. In one instance, using RCFT methods we are able to determine the elliptic genus and find that in the unflavored limit it matches with the elliptic genus of geometric models. We argue that the non-geometric model is connected to geometric ones via a sequence of Higgsing transitions. These results lead us to formulate a proposal relating the quantum corrected moduli space of the hyperplane string CFT with a region of the landscape of 6d $(1,0)$ quantum gravity.

The ALE Partition Functions of M-Strings

We compute the equivariant partition function of the six-dimensional M-string SCFTs on a background with the topology of a product of a two-dimensional torus and an ALE singularity. We determine the result by exploiting BPS strings probing the singularity, whose worldvolume theories we determine via a chain of string dualities. A distinguished feature we observe is that for this class of background the BPS strings' worldsheet theories become relative field theories that are sensitive to finer discrete data generalizing to 6d the familiar choices of flat connections at infinity for instantons on ALE spaces. We test our proposal against a conjectural 6d N = (1,0) generalization of the Nekrasov master formula, as well as against known results on ALE partition functions in four dimensions.

The ALE Partition Functions of M-String Orbifolds

The ALE partition functions of a 6d (1,0) SCFT are interesting observables which are able to detect the global structure of the SCFT. They are defined to be the equivariant partition functions of the SCFT on a background with the topology of a two-dimensional torus times an ALE singularity. In this work, we compute the ALE partition functions of M-string orbifold SCFTs, extending our previous results for the M-string SCFTs. Via geometric engineering, our results about ALE partition functions are connected to the theory of higher-rank Donaldson-Thomas invariants for resolutions of elliptic Calabi-Yau threefold singularities. We predict that their generating functions satisfy interesting modular properties. The partition functions receive contributions from BPS strings probing the ALE singularity, whose worldsheet theories we determine via a chain of string dualities. For this class of backgrounds the BPS strings' worldsheet theories become relative field theories that are sensitive to discrete data generalizing to 6d the familiar choices of flat connections at infinity for instantons on ALE spaces. A novel feature we observe in the case of M-string orbifold SCFTs, which does not arise for the M-string SCFT, is the existence of frozen BPS strings which are pinned at the orbifold singularity and carry fractional instanton charge with respect to the 6d gauge fields.

Holomorphic Anomalies, Fourfolds and Fluxes

We investigate holomorphic anomalies of partition functions underlying string compactifications on Calabi-Yau fourfolds with background fluxes. For elliptic fourfolds the partition functions have an alternative interpretation as elliptic genera of N=1 supersymmetric string theories in four dimensions, or as generating functions for relative Gromov-Witten invariants of fourfolds with fluxes. We derive the holomorphic anomaly equations by starting from the BCOV formalism of topological strings, and translating them into geometrical terms. The result can be recast into modular and elliptic anomaly equations. As a new feature, as compared to threefolds, we find an extra contribution which is given by a gravitational descendant invariant. This leads to linear terms in the anomaly equations, which support an algebra of derivatives mapping between partition functions of the various flux sectors. These geometric features are mirrored by certain properties of quasi-Jacobi forms. We also offer an interpretation of the physics from the viewpoint of the worldsheet theory.

Quasi-Jacobi Forms, Elliptic Genera and Strings in Four Dimensions

We investigate the interplay between the enumerative geometry of Calabi-Yau fourfolds with fluxes and the modularity of elliptic genera in four-dimensional string theories. We argue that certain contributions to the elliptic genus are given by derivatives of modular or quasi-modular forms, which encode BPS invariants of Calabi-Yau or non-Calabi-Yau threefolds that are embedded in the given fourfold. As a result, the elliptic genus is only a quasi-Jacobi form, rather than a modular or quasi-modular one in the usual sense. This manifests itself as a holomorphic anomaly of the spectral flow symmetry, and in an elliptic holomorphic anomaly equation that maps between different flux sectors. We support our general considerations by a detailed study of examples, including non-critical strings in four dimensions. For the critical heterotic string, we explain how anomaly cancellation is restored due to the properties of the derivative sector. Essentially, while the modular sector of the elliptic genus takes care of anomaly cancellation involving the universal B-field, the quasi-Jacobi one accounts for additional B-fields that can be present. Thus once again, diverse mathematical ingredients, namely here the algebraic geometry of fourfolds, relative Gromow-Witten theory pertaining to flux backgrounds, and the modular properties of (quasi-)Jacobi forms, conspire in an intriguing manner precisely as required by stringy consistency.

Modular Exercises for Four-Point Blocks -- I

The well-known modular property of the torus characters and torus partition functions of (rational) vertex operator algebras (VOAs) and 2d conformal field theories (CFTs) has been an invaluable tool for studying this class of theories. In this work we prove that sphere four-point chiral blocks of rational VOAs are vector-valued modular forms for the groups $\Gamma(2)$, $\Gamma_0(2)$, or $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$. Moreover, we prove that the four-point correlators, combining the holomorphic and anti-holomorphic chiral blocks, are modular invariant. In particular, in this language the crossing symmetries are simply modular symmetries. This gives the possibility of exploiting the available techniques and knowledge about modular forms to determine or constrain the physically interesting quantities such as chiral blocks and fusion coefficients, which we illustrate with a few examples. We also highlight the existence of a sphere-torus correspondence equating the sphere quantities of certain theories ${\mathcal T}_s$ with the torus quantities of another family of theories ${\mathcal T}_t$. A companion paper will delve into more examples and explore more systematically this sphere-torus duality.

Hidden exceptional symmetry in the pure spinor superstring

The pure spinor formulation of superstring theory includes an interacting sector of central charge $c_λ=22$, which can be realized as a curved $βγ$ system on the cone over the orthogonal Grassmannian $\text{OG}^{+}(5,10)$. We find that the spectrum of the $βγ$ system organizes into representations of the $\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{e}_6$ affine algebra at level $-3$, whose $\mathfrak{so}(10)_{-3}\oplus {\mathfrak u}(1)_{-4}$ subalgebra encodes the rotational and ghost symmetries of the system. As a consequence, the pure spinor partition function decomposes as a sum of affine $\mathfrak{e}_6$ characters. We interpret this as an instance of a more general pattern of enhancements in curved $βγ$ systems, which also includes the cases $\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{so}(8)$ and $\mathfrak{e}_7$, corresponding to target spaces that are cones over the complex Grassmannian $\text{Gr}(2,4)$ and the complex Cayley plane $\mathbb{OP}^2$. We identify these curved $βγ$ systems with the chiral algebras of certain $2d$ $(0,2)$ CFTs arising from twisted compactification of 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs on $S^2$.

Universal Features of BPS Strings in Six-dimensional SCFTs

In theories with extended supersymmetry the protected observables of UV superconformal fixed points are found in a number of contexts to be encoded in the BPS solitons along an IR Coulomb-like phase. For six-dimensional SCFTs such a role is played by the BPS strings on the tensorial Coulomb branch. In this paper we develop a uniform description of the worldsheet theories of a BPS string for rank-one 6d SCFTs. These strings are the basic constituents of the BPS string spectrum of arbitrary rank six-dimensional models, which they generate by forming bound states. Motivated by geometric engineering in F-theory, we describe the worldsheet theories of the BPS strings in terms of topologically twisted 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories in the presence of $1/2$-BPS 2d $(0,4)$ defects. As the superconformal point of a 6d theory with gauge group $G$ is approached, the resulting worldsheet theory flows to an $\mathcal{N}=(0,4)$ NLSM with target the moduli space of one $G$ instanton, together with a nontrivial left moving bundle characterized by the matter content of the six-dimensional model. We compute the anomaly polynomial and central charges of the NLSM, and argue that the 6d flavor symmetry $F$ is realized as a current algebra on the string, whose level we compute. We find evidence that for generic theories the $G$ dependence is captured at the level of the elliptic genus by characters of an affine Kac-Moody algebra at negative level, which we interpret as a subsector of the chiral algebra of the BPS string worldsheet theory. We also find evidence for a spectral flow relating the R-R and NS-R elliptic genera. These properties of the string CFTs lead to constraints on their spectra, which in combination with modularity allow us to determine the elliptic genera of a vast number of string CFTs, leading also to novel results for 6d and 5d instanton partition functions.

Topological Strings on Singular Elliptic Calabi-Yau 3-folds and Minimal 6d SCFTs

We apply the modular approach to computing the topological string partition function on non-compact elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau 3-folds with higher Kodaira singularities in the fiber. The approach consists in making an ansatz for the partition function at given base degree, exact in all fiber classes to arbitrary order and to all genus, in terms of a rational function of weak Jacobi forms. Our results yield, at given base degree, the elliptic genus of the corresponding non-critical 6d string, and thus the associated BPS invariants of the 6d theory. The required elliptic indices are determined from the chiral anomaly 4-form of the 2d worldsheet theories, or the 8-form of the corresponding 6d theories, and completely fix the holomorphic anomaly equation constraining the partition function. We introduce subrings of the known rings of Weyl invariant Jacobi forms which are adapted to the additional symmetries of the partition function, making its computation feasible to low base wrapping number. In contradistinction to the case of simpler singularities, generic vanishing conditions on BPS numbers are no longer sufficient to fix the modular ansatz at arbitrary base wrapping degree. We show that to low degree, imposing exact vanishing conditions does suffice, and conjecture this to be the case generally.

On Exceptional Instanton Strings

According to a recent classification of 6d (1,0) theories within F-theory there are only six "pure" 6d gauge theories which have a UV superconformal fixed point. The corresponding gauge groups are $SU(3),SO(8),F_4,E_6,E_7$, and $E_8$. These exceptional models have BPS strings which are also instantons for the corresponding gauge groups. For $G$ simply-laced, we determine the 2d $\mathcal{N}=(0,4)$ worldsheet theories of such BPS instanton strings by a simple geometric engineering argument. These are given by a twisted $S^2$ compactification of the 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories of type $H_2, D_4, E_6, E_7$ and $E_8$ (and their higher rank generalizations), where the 6d instanton number is mapped to the rank of the corresponding 4d SCFT. This determines their anomaly polynomials and, via topological strings, establishes an interesting relation among the corresponding $T^2 \times S^2$ partition functions and the Hilbert series for moduli spaces of $G$ instantons. Such relations allow to bootstrap the corresponding elliptic genera by modularity. As an example of such procedure, the elliptic genera for a single instanton string are determined. The same method also fixes the elliptic genus for case of one $ F_4 $ instanton. These results unveil a rather surprising relation with the Schur index of the corresponding 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ models.

6d String Chains

We consider bound states of strings which arise in 6d (1,0) SCFTs that are realized in F-theory in terms of linear chains of spheres with negative self-intersections 1,2, and 4. These include the strings associated to N small E8 instantons, as well as the ones associated to M5 branes probing A and D type singularities in M-theory or D5 branes probing ADE singularities in Type IIB string theory. We find that these bound states of strings admit (0,4) supersymmetric quiver descriptions and show how one can compute their elliptic genera.

E + E $\rightarrow$ H

E-strings arise from M2 branes suspended between an M5 brane and an M9 plane. In this paper we obtain explicit expressions for the elliptic genus of two E-strings using a series of string dualities. Moreover we show how this can be used to recover the elliptic genus of two $E_8\times E_8$ heterotic strings using the Horava-Witten realization of heterotic strings in M-theory. This involves highly non-trivial identities among Jacobi forms, and is remarkable in light of the fact that E-strings are 'sticky' and form bound states whereas heterotic strings do not form bound states.

Strings of Minimal 6d SCFTs

We study strings associated with minimal 6d SCFTs, which by definition have only one string charge and no Higgs branch. These theories are labelled by a number n with 1 <= n <= 8 or n = 12. Quiver theories have previously been proposed which describe strings of SCFTs for n = 1, 2. For n > 2 the strings interact with the bulk gauge symmetry. In this paper we find a quiver description for the n = 4 string using Sen's limit of F-theory and calculate its elliptic genus with localization techniques. This result is checked using the duality of F-theory with M-theory and topological string theory whose refined BPS partition function captures the elliptic genus of the SCFT strings. We use the topological string theory to gain insight into the elliptic genus for other values of n.

M-Strings

M2 branes suspended between adjacent parallel M5 branes lead to light strings, the `M-strings'. In this paper we compute the elliptic genus of M-strings, twisted by maximally allowed symmetries that preserve 2d (2,0) supersymmetry. In a codimension one subspace of parameters this reduces to the elliptic genus of the (4,4) supersymmetric A_{n-1} quiver theory in 2d. We contrast the elliptic genus of N M-strings with the (4,4) sigma model on the N-fold symmetric product of R^4. For N=1 they are the same, but for N>1 they are close, but not identical. Instead the elliptic genus of (4,4) N M-strings is the same as the elliptic genus of (4,0) sigma models on the N-fold symmetric product of R^4, but where the right-moving fermions couple to a modification of the tangent bundle. This construction arises from a dual A_{n-1} quiver 6d gauge theory with U(1) gauge groups. Moreover we compute the elliptic genus of domain walls which separate different numbers of M2 branes on the two sides of the wall.

On orbifolds of M-Strings

We consider M-theory in the presence of M parallel M5-branes probing a transverse A_{N-1} singularity. This leads to a superconformal theory with (1,0) supersymmetry in six dimensions. We compute the supersymmetric partition function of this theory on a two-torus, with arbitrary supersymmetry preserving twists, using the topological vertex formalism. Alternatively, we show that this can also be obtained by computing the elliptic genus of an orbifold of recently studied M-strings. The resulting 2d theory is a (4,0) supersymmetric quiver gauge theory whose Higgs branch corresponds to strings propagating on the moduli space of SU(N)^{M-1} instantons on R^4 where the right-moving fermions are coupled to a particular bundle.
