Maximum Relative Entropy of Coherence for Quantum Channels

Based on the resource theory for quantifying the coherence of quantum channels, we introduce a new coherence quantifier for quantum channels via maximum relative entropy. We prove that the maximum relative entropy for coherence of quantum channels is directly related to the maximally coherent channels under a particular class of superoperations, which results in an operational interpretation of the maximum relative entropy for coherence of quantum channels. We also introduce the conception of sub-superchannels and sub-superchannel discrimination. For any quantum channels, we show that the advantage of quantum channels in sub-superchannel discrimination can be exactly characterized by the maximum relative entropy of coherence for quantum channels. Similar to the maximum relative entropy of coherence for channels, the robustness of coherence for quantum channels has also been investigated. We show that the maximum relative entropy of coherence for channels provides new operational interpretations of robustness of coherence for quantum channels and illustrates the equivalence of the dephasing-covariant superchannels, incoherent superchannels, and strictly incoherent superchannels in these two operational tasks.

Scalable higher-order exceptional surface with passive resonators

The sensitivity of perturbation sensing can be effectively enhanced with higher-order exceptional points due to the nonlinear response to frequency splitting. However, the experimental implementation is challenging since all the parameters need to be precisely prepared. The emergence of exceptional surface (ES) improves the robustness of the system to the external environment, while maintaining the same sensitivity. Here, we propose the first scalable protocol for realizing photonic high-order exceptional surface with passive resonators. By adding one or more additional passive resonators in the low-order ES photonic system, the 3- or arbitrary N-order ES is constructed and proved to be easily realized in experiment. We show that the sensitivity is enhanced and experimental demonstration is more resilent against the fabrication errors. The additional phase-modulation effect is also investigated.

Experimental realization of sensitivity enhancement and suppression with exceptional surfaces

By preparing a sensor system around isolated exceptional points, one can obtain a great enhancement of the sensitivity benefiting from the non-Hermiticity. However, this comes at the cost of reduction of the flexibility of the system, which is critical for practical applications. By generalizing the exceptional points to exceptional surfaces, it has been theoretically proposed recently that enhanced sensitivity and flexibility can be combined. Here, we experimentally demonstrate an exceptional surface in a non-Hermitian photonic sensing system, which is composed of a whispering-gallery-mode microresonator and two nanofiber waveguides, resulting in a unidirectional coupling between two degenerate counter-propagating modes with an external optical isolator. The system is simple, robust, and can be easily operated around an exceptional surface. On the one hand, we observe sensitivity enhancement by monitoring the resonant frequency splitting caused by small perturbations. This demonstration of exceptional-surface-enhanced sensitivity paves the way for practical non-Hermitian sensing applications. On the other hand, we also show the suppression of frequency splitting around the exceptional surface for the first time.

Collapse-in and Collapse-out in Partial Measurement in Quantum Mechanics and its WISE Interpretation

In this short communication, I gave a generalization of measurement postulate in quantum mechanics. It is regarding the case with partial measurement, namely, measurement on only part of a wave function. Upon a partial measurement, the wavefunction will either collapse in one of the eigenstate covered by the measured partial wavefunction; or collapses out of the measured part and shifts to the unmeasured part. An explanation in the WISE (Wavefunction Is System Entity) interpretation is given.

Optical properties of a waveguide-mediated chain of randomly positioned atoms

We theoretically study the optical properties of an ensemble of two-level atoms coupled to a one-dimensional waveguide. In our model, the atoms are randomly located in the lattice sites along the one-dimensional waveguide. The results reveal that the optical transport properties of the atomic ensemble are influenced by the lattice constant and the filling factor of the lattice sites. We also focus on the atomic mirror configuration and quantify the effect of the inhomogeneous broadening in atomic resonant transition on the scattering spectrum. Furthermore, we find that initial bunching and persistent quantum beats appear in photon-photon correlation function of the transmitted field, which are significantly changed by filling factor of the lattice sites. With great progress to interface quantum emitters with nanophotonics, our results should be experimentally realizable in the near future.

Loophole-free plug-and-play quantum key distribution

Robust, simple, and flexible quantum key distribution (QKD) is vital for realising practical applications of this technique. Contrary to typical phase-coded QKD schemes, the plug-and-play QKD design requires only one arm-length-insensitive interferometer without active feedback, in which the noise is automatically compensated by the two-way structure. However, there are certain possible loopholes in the typical plug-and-play designs, which require consideration and strict monitoring. This study proposes a loophole-free plug-and-play QKD scheme with two-way protocol and presents an experimental demonstration of said scheme. The security is analysed under a collective attack scenario assisted by the decoy state method. The scheme was implemented in a 50.4 km commercial fibre without active feedback. The system showed highly robust performance with an ultra-low error rate and maintained an ultra-high visibility of 0.9947+/-0.0002 through significant environmental changes over 24 hours.

Security Analysis of Measurement-device-independent Quantum Secure Direct Communication

Quantum secure direct communication (QSDC) is an important branch of quantum communication that transmits confidential message directly in a quantum channel without utilizing encryption and decryption. It not only prevents eavesdropping during transmission, but also eliminates the security loophole associated with key storage and management. Recently measurement-device-independent (MDI) QSDC protocols in which the measurement is performed by an untrusted party using imperfect measurement devices have been constructed, and MDI-QSDC eliminates the security loopholes originating from the imperfections in measurement devices so that enable application of QSDC with current technology. In this paper, we complete the quantitative security analysis of the MDI-QSDC. The security capacity is derived, and its lower bound is given. It is found that the MDI-QSDC secrecy capacity is only slightly lower than that of QSDC utilizing perfect measurement devices. Therefore QSDC is possible with current measurement devices by sacrificing a small amount in the capacity.

Quantum Sensing by Using STIRAP with Dressed States Driving

Exploring quantum technology to precisely measure physical quantities is a meaningful task for practical scientific researches. Here, we propose a novel quantum sensing model based on dressed states driving (DSD) in stimulated Raman adiabatic passage. The model is universal for sensing different physical quantities, such as magnetic field, mass, rotation and etc. For different sensors, the used systems can range from macroscopic scale, e.g. optomechanical systems, to microscopic nanoscale, e.g. nitrogen-vacancy color centres in diamond. By investigating the dynamics of color detuning of DSD passage, the results show the sensitivity of sensors can be enhanced by tuning system with more adiabatic and accelerated processes in non-degenerate and degenerate color detuning regime, respectively. To show application examples, we apply our approach to build optomechanical mass sensor and solid spin magnetometer with practical parameters.

Multimode interference induced optical nonreciprocity and routing in an optical microcavity

Optical nonreciprocity and routing using optocal microcavities draw much atttention in recent years. Here, we report the results of the study on the nonreciprocity and routing using optomechanical multimode interference in an optical microcavity. The optomechanical system used here possesses multi-optical modes and a mechanical mode. Optomechanical induced transparency and absorption, appear in the system due to the interference between different paths. The system can present significant nonreciprocity and routing properties when appropriate parameters of the system are set. We design quantum devices, such as diode, circulator and router, which are important applications. Our work shows that optomechanical multimode system can be used as a promising platform for buliding photonic and quantum network.

Coherent and incoherent theories for photosynthetic energy transfer

There is a remarkable characteristic of photosynthesis in nature, that is, the energy transfer efficiency is close to 100%. Recently, due to the rapid progress made in the experimental techniques, quantum coherent effects have been experimentally demonstrated. Traditionally, the incoherent theories are capable of calculating the energy transfer efficiency, e.g., (generalized) Förster theory and modified Redfield theory. However, in order to describe the quantum coherent effects in photosynthesis, the coherent theories have been developed, such as hierarchical equation of motion, quantum path integral, coherent modified Redfield theory, small-polaron quantum master equation, and general Bloch-Redfield theory in addition to the Redfield theory. Here, we summarize the main points of the above approaches, which might be beneficial to the quantum simulation of quantum dynamics of exciton energy transfer in natural photosynthesis, and shed light on the design of artificial light-harvesting devices.

Frequency-tuning induced state transfer in optical microcavities

Quantum state transfer in optical microcavities plays an important role in quantum information processing, and is essential in many optical devices, such as optical frequency converter and diode. Existing schemes are effective and realized by tuning the coupling strengths between modes. However, such approaches are severely restricted due to the small amount of strength that can be tuned and the difficulty to perform the tuning in some situations, such as on-chip microcavity system. Here, we propose a novel approach that realizes the state transfer between different modes in optical microcavities by tuning the frequency of an intermediate mode. We showed that for typical functions of frequency-tuning, such as linear and periodic functions, the state transfer can be realized successfully with different features. To optimize the process, we use gradient descent technique to find an optimal tuning function for the fast and perfect state transfer. We also showed that our approach has significant nonreciprocity with appropriate tuning variables, where one can unidirectionally transfer a state from one mode to another, but the inverse direction transfer is forbidden. This work provides an effective method for controlling the multimode interactions in on-chip optical microcavities via simple operations and it has practical applications in all-optical devices.

Highly efficient optical add-drop filter with an angle-polished fiber coupler

Microbubble whispering-gallery resonators have shown great promise in fiber-optic communications because of their low confinement loss and hollow cores, which allow for facile stress-based tunability. Usually, the transmission spectrum of taper-coupled microbubbles contains closely spaced modes due to the relatively large radii and oblate geometry of microbubbles. In this letter, we develop an optical add-drop filter using a microbubble coupled to fiber taper and angle-polished fiber waveguides. Because of the extra degree of freedom in the angle of its polish surface, the angle-polished fiber can be used for the discriminatory excitation of certain radial-order modes in the optical microcavity, reducing the high modal density and enhancing add-drop selectivity. Our robust and tunable add-drop filter demonstrated a drop efficiency of 85.9% and quality factor of 2 x 10^7, corresponding to a linewidth of 9.68 MHz. As a proof of concept, the drop frequency was tuned using internal aerostatic pressure at a rate of 7.3 +/- 0.2 GHz/bar with no diminishing effects on the add-drop filter performance.

Topological Dynamical Decoupling

We show that topological equivalence classes of circles in a two-dimensional square lattice can be used to design dynamical decoupling procedures to protect qubits attached on the edges of the lattice. Based on the circles of the topologically trivial class in the original and the dual lattices, we devise a procedure which removes all kinds of local Hamiltonians from the dynamics of the qubits while keeping information stored in the homological degrees of freedom unchanged. If only the linearly independent interaction and nearest-neighbor two-qubit interactions are concerned, a much simpler procedure which involves the four equivalence classes of circles can be designed. This procedure is compatible with Eulerian and concatenated dynamical decouplings, which make it possible to implement the procedure with bounded-strength controls and for a long time period. As an application, it is shown that our method can be directly generalized to finite square lattices to suppress uncorrectable errors in surface codes.

Device-independent quantum secure direct communication

"Device-independent" not only represents a relaxation of the security assumptions about the internal working of the quantum devices, but also can enhance the security of the quantum communication. In the paper, we put forward the first device-independent quantum secure direct communication (DI-QSDC) protocol, where no assumptions are made about the way the devices work or on what quantum system they operate. We show that in the absence of noise, the DI-QSDC protocol is absolutely secure and there is no limitation for the communication distance. However, under practical noisy quantum channel condition, the photon transmission loss and photon state decoherence would reduce the communication quality and threaten its absolute security. For solving the photon transmission loss and decoherence problems, we adopt noiseless linear amplification (NLA) protocol and entanglement purification protocol (EPP) to modify the DI-QSDC protocol. With the help of the NLA and EPP, we can guarantee the absolute security of the DI-QSDC and effectively improve its communication quality.

Microwave transmission through an artificial atomic chain coupled to a superconducting photonic crystal

Emitters strongly coupled to a photonic crystal provide a powerful platform for realizing novel quantum light-matter interactions. Here we study the optical properties of a three-level artificial atomic chain coupled to a one-dimensional superconducting microwave photonic crystal. A sharp minimum-energy dip appears in the transmission spectrum of a weak input field, which reveals rich behavior of the long-range interactions arising from localized bound states. We find that the dip frequency scales linearly with both the number of the artificial atoms and the characteristic strength of the long-range interactions when the localization length of the bound state is sufficiently large. Motivated by this observation, we present a simple model to calculate the dip frequency with system parameters, which agrees well with the results from exact numerics for large localization lengths. We observe oscillation between bunching and antibunching in photon-photon correlation function of the output field. Furthermore, we find that the model remains valid even though the coupling strengths between the photonic crystal and artificial atoms are not exactly equal and the phases of external driving fields for the artificial atoms are different. Thus, we may infer valuable system parameters from the dip location in the transmission spectrum, which provides an important measuring tool for the superconducting microwave photonic crystal systems in experiment. With remarkable advances to couple artificial atoms with microwave photonic crystals, our proposal may be experimentally realized in currently available superconducting circuits.

Arbitrary function resonance tuner of the optical microcavity with sub-MHz resolution

The resonance frequency of an optical whispering gallery mode (WGM) microcavity is extremely important in its various applications. Many efforts have been made to fine tune this parameter. Here, we report the design and implementation of a function resonance tuner of an optical microcavity with resolution about 650 kHz (7 pm @ 1450 nm band), 20% of the optical WGM linewidth. A piezoelectric nano-positioner is used to mechanically compress the microsphere in its axial direction. The ultrafine frequency tuning is achieved benefitting from the much less changes in the axial direction than equatorial semiaxes of the microsphere and the sub-nanometer resolution of the nano-positioner. The tuning of the resonance can be made to an arbitrary function, dynamically, with near perfect accuracy. We have demonstrated the periodically tuning of resonance in the sine and sigmoid function respectively, both with over 99% fitting accuracy. This work expands the application of microresonators greatly, especially microspheres with ultrahigh quality factor, in multi-mode coupling system or time-floquet system.

A quantum algorithm for solving systems of nonlinear algebraic equations

We propose a quantum algorithm to solve systems of nonlinear algebraic equations. In the ideal case the complexity of the algorithm is linear in the number of variables $n$, which means our algorithm's complexity is less than $O(n^{3})$ of the corresponding classical ones when the set of equations has many variables and not so high orders. Different with most popular way of representing the results by state vector, we get the results in computation basis which is readable directly.

Linear optics based entanglement concentration protocols for Cluster-type entangled coherent state

We proposed two linear optics based entanglement concentration protocols (ECPs) to obtain maximally entangled 4-mode Cluster-type entangled coherent state (ECS) from less (partially) entangled Cluster-type ECS. The first ECP is designed using a superposition of single-mode coherent state with two unknown parameters, whereas the second ECP is obtained using a superposition of single-mode coherent state and a superposition of two-mode coherent state with four unknown parameters. The success probabilities have been calculated for both the ECPs. Necessary quantum circuits enabling future experimental realizations of the proposed ECPs are provided using linear optical elements. Further, the benefit of the proposed schemes is established in the context of long distance quantum communication where photon loss is an obstruction.
