Covariant Horava-like and mimetic Horndeski gravity: cosmological solutions and perturbations

We consider a variant of the Nojiri-Odintsov covariant Horava-like gravitational model, where diffeomorphism invariance is broken dynamically via a non-standard coupling to a perfect fluid. The theory allows to address some of the potential instability problems present in Horava-Lifshitz gravity due to explicit diffeomorphism invariance breaking. The fluid is instead constructed from a scalar field constrained by a Lagrange multiplier. In fact, the Lagrange multiplier construction allows for an extension of the Horava-like model to include the scalar field of mimetic gravity, an extension which we thoroughly explore. By adding a potential for the scalar field, we show how one can reproduce a number of interesting cosmological scenarios. We then turn to the study of perturbations around a flat FLRW background, showing that the fluid in question behaves as an irrotational fluid, with zero sound speed. To address this problem, we consider a modified version of the theory, adding higher derivative terms in a way which brings us beyond the Horndeski framework. We compute the sound speed in this modified higher order mimetic Horava-like model and show that it is non-zero, which means that perturbations therein can be sensibly defined. Caveats to our analysis, as well as comparisons to projectable Horava-Lifshitz gravity, are also discussed. In conclusion, we present a theory of gravity which preserves diffeomorphism invariance at the level of the action but breaks it dynamically in the UV, reduces to General Relativity in the IR, allows the realization of a number of interesting cosmological scenarios, is well defined when considering perturbations around a flat FLRW background, and features cosmological dark matter emerging as an integration constant.

Scale-invariant rotating black holes in quadratic gravity

Black hole solutions in pure quadratic theories of gravity are interesting since they allow to formulate a set of scale-invariant thermodynamics laws. Recently, we have proven that static scale-invariant black holes have a well-defined entropy, which characterizes equivalent classes of solutions. In this paper, we generalize these results and explore the thermodynamics of rotating black holes in pure quadratic gravity.

Inflation in scale-invariant theories of gravity

Thanks to the Planck Collaboration, we know the value of the scalar spectral index of primordial fluctuations with unprecedented precision. In addition, the joint analysis of the data from Planck, BICEP2, and KEK has further constrained the value of the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ so that chaotic inflationary scenarios seem to be disfavoured. Inspired by these results, we look for a model that yields a value of $r$ that is larger than the one predicted by the Starobinsky model but is still within the new constraints. We show that purely quadratic, renormalizable, and scale-invariant gravity, implemented by loop-corrections, satisfies these requirements.

Thermodynamics of topological black holes in $R^{2}$ gravity

We study topological black hole solutions of the simplest quadratic gravity action and we find that two classes are allowed. The first is asymptotically flat and mimics the Reissner-Nordström solution, while the second is asymptotically de Sitter or anti-de Sitter. In both classes, the geometry of the horizon can be spherical, toroidal or hyperbolic. We focus in particular on the thermodynamical properties of the asymptotically anti-de Sitter solutions and we compute the entropy and the internal energy with Euclidean methods. We find that the entropy is positive-definite for all horizon geometries and this allows to formulate a consistent generalized first law of black hole thermodynamics, which keeps in account the presence of two arbitrary parameters in the solution. The two-dimensional thermodynamical state space is fully characterized by the underlying scale invariance of the action and it has the structure of a projective space. We find a kind of duality between black holes and other objects with the same entropy in the state space. We briefly discuss the extension of our results to more general quadratic actions.

Reconstructing the inflationary $f(R)$ from observations

The BICEP2 collaboration has recently released data showing that the scalar-to-tensor ratio $r$ is much larger than expected. The immediate consequence, in the context of $f(R)$ gravity, is that the Starobinsky model of inflation is ruled out since it predicts a value of $r$ much smaller than what is observed. Of course, the BICEP2 data need verification, especially from Planck with which there is some tension, therefore any conclusion seems premature. However, it is interesting to ask what would be the functional form of $f(R)$ in the case when the value of $r$ is different from the one predicted by the Starobinsky model. In this paper, we show how to determine the form of $f(R)$, once the slow-roll parameters are known with some accuracy. The striking result is that, for given values of the scalar spectral index $n_{S}$ and $r$, the effective Lagrangian has the form $f(R)=R^ζ$, where $ζ=2-\varepsilon$ and $|\varepsilon|\ll 1$. Therefore, it appears that the inflationary phase of the Universe is best described by a $R^{2}$ theory, with a small deviation that, as we show, can be obtained by quantum corrections.

One-loop Modified Gravity in de Sitter Universe, Quantum Corrected Inflation, and its Confrontation with the Planck Result

Motivated by issues on inflation, a generalized modified gravity model is investigated, where the model Lagrangian is described by a smooth function $f(R, K, ϕ)$ of the Ricci scalar $R$, the kinetic term $K$ of a scalar field $ϕ$. In particular, the one-loop effective action in the de Sitter background is examined on-shell as well as off-shell in the Landau gauge. In addition, the on-shell quantum equivalence of $f(R)$ gravity in the Jordan and Einstein frames is explicitly demonstrated. Furthermore, we present applications related to the stability of the de Sitter solutions and the one-loop quantum correction to inflation in quantum-corrected $R^2$ gravity. It is shown that for a certain range of parameters, the spectral index of the curvature perturbations can be consistent with the Planck analysis, but the tensor-to-scalar ratio is smaller than the minimum value within the 1 $σ$ error range of the BICEP2 result.

Ray tracing in FLRW flat space-times

In this work we take moves from the debate triggered by Melia et al [9]. and followed by opposite comments by Lewis and Oirschot [10,11]. The point in question regards the role of the Hubble horizon as a limit for observability in a cosmological setting. We propose to take the issue in a broader way by relating it to the causal character of the Hubble surface and to the tracing of null trajectories, focusing on both three-fluids and generalized Chaplygin gas models. The results should make clear that light rays reaching a comoving observer at R(t_0)=0 have never travelled a distance greater than the areal radius of the horizon until t_0.

Einstein gravity with Gauss-Bonnet entropic corrections

A toy model of Einstein gravity with a Gauss-Bonnet classically "entropic" term mimicking a quantum correction is considered. The static black hole solution due to Tomozawa is found and generalized with the inclusion of non trivial horizon topology, and its entropy evaluated deriving the first law by equations of motion. As a result the Bekenstein-Hawking area law turns to be corrected by a logarithmic area term. A Misner-Sharp expression for the mass of black hole is found. Within a Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) cosmological setting, the model is used in order to derive modified Friedmann equations. Such new equations are shown to reproduce the first law with the same formal entropy and quasi local energy of the static case, but here within a FLRW space-time interpreted as a dynamical cosmological black hole. A detailed analysis of cosmological solutions is presented, and it is shown that the presence of the correction term provides regular solutions and interesting phases of acceleration and decelerations, as well as, with negligible matter, exact de Sitter solutions.

Thermodynamics of Extended Gravity Black Holes

Thermodynamics of extended gravity static spherically symmetric black hole solutions is investigated. The energy issue is discussed making use of the derivation of Clausius relation from equations of motion, evaluating the black hole entropy by the Wald method and computing the related Hawking temperature.

Topological electro-vacuum solutions in extended gravity

Spherically symmetric static topological black hole solutions associated with some extended higher order gravitational models in the presence of a Maxwell-field are derived by means of simple Lagrangian method, based on spherically symmetric reduction. Some new topological black hole solutions are presented and the validity of the First Law is investigated, and in these cases an expression for the energy is provided.

One-loop F(R,P,Q) gravity in de Sitter universe

Motivated by the dark energy issue, the one-loop quantization approach for a class of relativistic higher order theories is discussed in some detail. A specific F(R,P,Q) gravity model at the one-loop level in a de Sitter universe is investigated, extending the similar program developed for the case of $F(R)$ gravity. The stability conditions under arbitrary perturbations are derived.

On the Energy Issue for a Class of Modified Higher Order Gravity Black Hole Solutions

In the case of a large class of static spherically symmetric black hole solutions in higher order modified gravity models, an expression for the associated energy is proposed and identified as a quantity proportional to the constant of integration, which appears in the explicit solution. The identification is achieved making use of derivation of the First Law of black hole physics from the equations of motion, evaluating independently the Entropy via Wald method and the Hawking temperature via the tunneling method. Several non trivial examples are discussed, including a new topological higher derivative black hole solution.

One-loop effective action for non-local modified Gauss-Bonnet gravity in de Sitter space

We discuss the classical and quantum properties of non-local modified Gauss-Bonnet gravity in de Sitter space, using its equivalent representation via string-inspired local scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity with a scalar potential. A classical, multiply de Sitter universe solution is found where one of the de Sitter phases corresponds to the primordial inflationary epoch, while the other de Sitter space solution--the one with the smallest Hubble rate--describes the late-time acceleration of our universe. A Chameleon scenario for the theory under investigation is developed, and it is successfully used to show that the theory complies with gravitational tests. An explicit expression for the one-loop effective action for this non-local modified Gauss-Bonnet gravity in the de Sitter space is obtained. It is argued that this effective action might be an important step towards the solution of the cosmological constant problem.

Generalized modified gravity models: the stability issue

A brief introduction on the issue of stability in generalized modified gravity is presented and the dynamical system methods are used in the investigation of the stability of spatially flat homogeneous cosmologies within a large class of generalized modified gravity models in the presence of a relativistic matter-radiation fluid.

Homogeneous cosmologies in generalized modified gravity

Dynamical system methods are used in the study of the stability of spatially flat homogeneous cosmologies within a large class of generalized modified gravity models in the presence of a relativistic matter-radiation fluid. The present approach can be considered as the generalization of previous works in which only $F(R)$ cases were considered. Models described by an arbitrary function of all possible geometric invariants are investigated and general equations giving all critical points are derived.

On the Stability of a class of Modified Gravitational Models

Motivated by the dark energy issue, a minisuperspace approach to the stability for modified gravitational models in a four dimensional cosmological setting are investigated. Specifically, after revisiting the $f(R)$ case, $R$ being the Ricci curvature, we present a stability condition around a de Sitter solution valid for modified gravitational models of generalized Gauss-Bonnet type $F(R,G,Q)$, $G$ and $Q$ being the Gauss-Bonnet and quadratic Riemann invariants respectively. A generalization to higher order invariants is mentioned.

String-inspired Gauss-Bonnet gravity reconstructed from the universe expansion history and yielding the transition from matter dominance to dark energy

We consider scalar-Gauss-Bonnet and modified Gauss-Bonnet gravities and reconstruct these theories from the universe expansion history. In particular, we are able to construct versions of those theories (with and without ordinary matter), in which the matter dominated era makes a transition to the cosmic acceleration epoch. It is remarkable that, in several of the cases under consideration, matter dominance and the deceleration-acceleration transition occur in the presence of matter only. The late-time acceleration epoch is described asymptotically by de Sitter space but may also correspond to an exact $Λ$CDM cosmology, having in both cases an effective equation of state parameter $w$ close to -1. The one-loop effective action of modified Gauss-Bonnet gravity on the de Sitter background is evaluated and it is used to derive stability criteria for the ensuing de Sitter universe.
