$\mathscr{A}$-free measures and the Rank-one Theorem in Carnot Groups

We establish a structure theorem for measures satisfying left-invariant PDE constraints in Carnot groups. Our generalization, that takes inspiration from the paper arxiv:1601.06543 by the first named author and F. Rindler, requires the introduction of the hypoelliptic wave cone, a sub-Riemannian version of the wave cone from the theory of Compensated Compactness, and it employs classical results in Harmonic Analysis on homogeneous spaces. Then, we utilize this result to extend the Rank-one Theorem for functions of bounded horizontal variation ($BV_H$) to all Carnot groups. This is achieved by considering a suitable curl-type left-invariant operator, that provides necessary differential constraints for horizontal gradients, and by studying the hypoellipticity of said constraints.

Optimal regularity for vectorial, higher order and non-minimizing Bernoulli problems

We prove the Lipschitz regularity of solutions for a wide class of generalized Bernoulli free boundary problems, in vectorial, higher order, and non-minimizing settings. Our method does not rely on notions of viscosity solutions or comparison methods, which allows us to reach the optimal regularity for Bernoulli-type problems associated to elliptic operators which do not satisfy any maximum principle, namely the elasticity, biharmonic and Stokes equation. With a similar method we obtain the optimal Lipschitz regularity for stationary, non-minimizing solutions of the standard Bernoulli problem in two dimensions.

Michael-Simon inequality for anisotropic energies close to the area via multilinear Kakeya-type bounds

Given an anisotropic integrand $F:\text{Gr}_k(\mathbb{R}^n)\to(0,\infty)$, we can generalize the classical isotropic area by looking at the functional $$\mathcal{F}(Σ^k):=\int_ΣF(T_xΣ)\,d\mathcal{H}^k.$$ While a monotonicity formula is not available for critical points, when $k=2$ and $n=3$ we show that the Michael-Simon inequality holds if $F$ is close to $1$ (in $C^1$), meaning that $\mathcal{F}$ is close to the usual area. Our argument is partly based on some key ideas of Almgren, who proved this result in an unpublished manuscript, but we largely simplify his original proof by showing a new functional inequality for vector fields on the plane, which can be seen as a quantitative version of Alberti's rank-one theorem, and we also remove a convexity assumption on $F$. As another byproduct, we also show Michael-Simon for another class of integrands which includes the $\ell^p$ norms for $p\in(1,\infty)$. For a general $F$ satisfying the atomic condition, we also show that the validity of Michael-Simon is equivalent to compactness of rectifiable varifolds.

Osgood meets Ambrosio-DiPerna-Lions

In this note we extend the Ambrosio-DiPerna-Lions theory on the well-posedness of the transport equation to the case in which the vector field satisfies an $L^p$ Osgood condition. In particular we show that bounded distributional solutions to the transport equation are unique and thus renormalized. As opposed to the classical proof, we do not rely on the vanishing of a commutator, but we show that a weighted energy built out of the Littlewood-Paley decomposition of the solution is conserved.

Optimal transport maps, majorization, and log-subharmonic measures

Caffarelli's contraction theorem bounds the derivative of the optimal transport map between a log-convex measure and a strongly log-concave measure. We show that an analogous phenomenon holds on the level of the trace: The trace of the derivative of the optimal transport map between a log-subharmonic measure and a strongly log-concave measure is bounded. We show that this trace bound has a number of consequences pertaining to volume-contracting transport maps, majorization and its monotonicity along Wasserstein geodesics, growth estimates of log-subharmonic functions, the Wehrl conjecture for Glauber states, and two-dimensional Coulomb gases. We also discuss volume-contraction properties for the Kim-Milman transport map

Non-collapsed spaces with Ricci curvature bounded from below

We propose a definition of non-collapsed space with Ricci curvature bounded from below and we prove the versions of Colding's volume convergence theorem and of Cheeger-Colding dimension gap estimate for ${\sf RCD}$ spaces. In particular this establishes the stability of non-collapsed spaces under non-collapsed Gromov-Hausdorff convergence.

Existence and regularity of min-max anisotropic minimal hypersurfaces

In any closed smooth Riemannian manifold of dimension at least three, we use the min-max construction to find anisotropic minimal hyper-surfaces with respect to elliptic integrands, with a singular set of codimension~$2$ vanishing Hausdorff measure. In particular, in a closed $3$-manifold, we obtain a smooth anisotropic minimal surface. The critical step is to obtain a uniform upper bound for density ratios in the anisotropic min-max construction. This confirms a conjecture by Allard [Invent. Math., 1983].

Decay of excess for the abelian Higgs model

In this article we prove that entire critical points $(u,\nabla)$ of the self-dual $U(1)$-Yang-Mills-Higgs functional $E_1$, with energy $$E_1(u,\nabla;B_R):=\int_{B_R}\left[|\nabla u|^2+\frac{(1-|u|^2)^2}{4}+|F_\nabla|^2\right]\leq(2π+τ(n)) ω_{n-2}R^{n-2}$$ for all $R>0$, have unique blow-down. Moreover, we show that they are two-dimensional in ambient dimension $2\leq n\leq4$, or in any dimension $n\ge2$ assuming that $(u,\nabla)$ is a local minimizer, thus establishing a co-dimension-two analogue of Savin's theorem. The main ingredient is an Allard-type improvement of flatness.

Unique continuation for differential inclusions

We consider the following question arising in the theory of differential inclusions: given an elliptic set $Γ$ and a Sobolev map $u$ whose gradient lies in the quasiconformal envelope of $Γ$ and touches $Γ$ on a set of positive measure, must $u$ be affine? We answer this question positively for a suitable notion of ellipticity, which for instance encompasses the case where $Γ\subset \mathbb R^{2\times 2}$ is an elliptic, smooth, closed curve. More precisely, we prove that the distance of $D u$ to $Γ$ satisfies the strong unique continuation property. As a by-product, we obtain new results for nonlinear Beltrami equations and recover known results for the reduced Beltrami equation and the Monge--Ampère equation: concerning the latter, we obtain a new proof of the $W^{2,1+\varepsilon}$-regularity for two-dimensional solutions.

On singular strictly convex solutions to the Monge-Ampère equation

We show the existence of a strictly convex function $u: B_1 \to \mathbb{R}$ with associated Monge-Ampère measure represented by a function $f$ with $0 < f < 1$ a.e. whose Hessian has a singular part. This extends the work [13] and answers an open question of [14,Sec. 6.2(1)].

A short proof of Allard's and Brakke's regularity theorems

We give new short proofs of Allard's regularity theorem for varifolds with bounded first variation and Brakke's regularity theorem for integral Brakke flows with bounded forcing. They are based on a decay of flatness, following from weighted versions of the respective monotonicity formulas, together with a characterization of non-homogeneous blow-ups using the viscosity approach introduced by Savin.

Higher integrability for measures satisfying a PDE constraint

We establish higher integrability estimates for constant-coefficient systems of linear PDEs \[ \mathcal{A} μ= σ, \] where $μ\in \mathcal{M}(Ω;V)$ and $σ\in \mathcal{M}(Ω;W)$ are vector measures and the polar $\frac{\mathrm{d} μ}{\mathrm{d} |μ|}$ is uniformly close to a convex cone of $V$ intersecting the wave cone of $\mathcal{A}$ only at the origin. More precisely, we prove local compensated compactness estimates of the form \[ \|μ\|_{\mathrm{L}^p(Ω')} \lesssim |μ|(Ω) + |σ|(Ω), \qquad Ω' \Subset Ω. \] Here, the exponent $p$ belongs to the (optimal) range $1 \leq p < d/(d-k)$, $d$ is the dimension of $Ω$, and $k$ is the order of $\mathcal{A}$. We also obtain the limiting case $p = d/(d-k)$ for canceling constant-rank operators. We consider applications to compensated compactness and {applications to the theory of} functions of bounded variation and bounded deformation.

From energy bounds to dimensional estimates in a branched transport model for type-I superconductors

We consider a branched transport type problem which describes the magnetic flux through type-I superconductors in a regime of very weak applied fields. At the boundary of the sample, deviation of the magnetization from being uniform is penalized through a negative Sobolev norm. It was conjectured by S. Conti, F. Otto and S. Serfaty that as a result, the trace of the magnetization on the boundary should be a measure of Hausdorff dimension $8/5$. We prove that this conjecture is equivalent to the proof of local energy bounds with an optimal exponent. We then obtain local bounds which are however not optimal. These yield improved lower bounds on the dimension of the irrigated measure but unfortunately does not improve on the trivial upper bound. In order to illustrate the dependence of this dimension on the choice of penalization, we consider in the last part of the paper a toy model where the boundary energy is given by a Wasserstein distance to Lebesgue. In this case minimizers are finite graphs and thus the trace is atomic.

On the converse of Pansu's Theorem

We provide a suitable generalisation of Pansu's differentiability theorem to general Radon measures on Carnot groups and we show that if Lipschitz maps between Carnot groups are Pansu-differentiable almost everywhere for some Radon measures $μ$, then $μ$ must be absolutely continuous with respect to the Haar measure of the group.

Non-degenerate minimal submanifolds as energy concentration sets: a variational approach

We prove that every non-degenerate minimal submanifold of codimension two can be obtained as the energy concentration set of a family of critical maps for the (rescaled) Ginzburg-Landau functional. The proof is purely variational, and follows the strategy laid out by Jerrard and Sternberg, extending a recent result for geodesics by Colinet-Jerrard-Sternberg. The same proof applies also to the $U(1)$-Yang-Mills-Higgs and to the Allen-Cahn-Hilliard energies.

The anisotropic Min-Max theory: Existence of anisotropic minimal and CMC surfaces

We prove the existence of nontrivial closed surfaces with constant anisotropic mean curvature with respect to elliptic integrands in closed smooth $3$-dimensional Riemannian manifolds. The constructed min-max surfaces are smooth with at most one singular point. The constant anisotropic mean curvature can be fixed to be any real number. In particular, we partially solve a conjecture of Allard [Invent. Math.,1983] in dimension $3$.
