A two-point function approach to connectedness of drops in convex potentials

We establish connectedness of volume constrained minimisers of energies involving surface tensions and convex potentials. By a previous result of McCann, this implies that minimisers are convex in dimension two. This positively answers an old question of Almgren. We also prove convexity of minimisers when the volume constraint is dropped. Our proof is based on the introduction of a new "two-point function" which measures the lack of convexity and which gives rise to a negative second variation of the energy.

Partial Regularity for optimal transport maps

We prove that, for general cost functions on $\mathbb{R}^n$, or for the cost $d^2/2$ on a Riemannian manifold, optimal transport maps between smooth densities are always smooth outside a closed singular set of measure zero.

On the two-state problem for general differential operators

In this note we generalize the Ball-James rigidity theorem for gradient differential inclusions to the setting of a general linear differential constraint. In particular, we prove the rigidity for approximate solutions to the two-state inclusion with incompatible states for merely $\mathrm{L}^1$-bounded sequences. In this way, our theorem can be seen as a result of compensated compactness in the linear-growth setting.

Boundary regularity of mass-minimizing integral currents and a question of Almgren

This short note is the announcement of a forthcoming work in which we prove a first general boundary regularity result for area-minimizing currents in higher codimension, without any geometric assumption on the boundary, except that it is an embedded submanifold of a Riemannian manifold, with a mild amount of smoothness ($C^{3, a_0}$ for a positive $a_0$ suffices). Our theorem allows to answer a question posed by Almgren at the end of his Big Regularity Paper. In this note we discuss the ideas of the proof and we also announce a theorem which shows that the boundary regularity is in general weaker that the interior regularity. Moreover we remark an interesting elementary byproduct on boundary monotonicity formulae.

Lower semicontinuity and relaxation of linear-growth integral functionals under PDE constraints

We show general lower semicontinuity and relaxation theorems for linear-growth integral functionals defined on vector measures that satisfy linear PDE side constraints (of arbitrary order). These results generalize several known lower semicontinuity and relaxation theorems for BV, BD, and for more general first-order linear PDE side constrains. Our proofs are based on recent progress in the understanding of singularities of measure solutions to linear PDEs and of the generalized convexity notions corresponding to these PDE constraints.

The closure of planar diffeomorphisms in Sobolev spaces

We characterize the (sequentially) weak and strong closure of planar diffeomorphisms in the Sobolev topology and we show that they always coincide. We also provide some sufficient condition for a planar map to be approximable by diffeomorphisms in terms of the connectedness of its counter-images, in the spirit of Young's characterisation of monotone functions. We finally show that the closure of diffeomorphisms in the Sobolev topology is strictly contained in the class INV introduced by Muller and Spector.

Characterization of generalized Young measures generated by symmetric gradients

This work establishes a characterization theorem for (generalized) Young measures generated by symmetric derivatives of functions of bounded deformation (BD) in the spirit of the classical Kinderlehrer-Pedregal theorem. Our result places such Young measures in duality with symmetric-quasiconvex functions with linear growth. The "local" proof strategy combines blow-up arguments with the singular structure theorem in BD (the analogue of Alberti's rank-one theorem in BV), which was recently proved by the authors. As an application of our characterization theorem we show how an atomic part in a BD-Young measure can be split off in generating sequences.

Rectifiability of varifolds with locally bounded first variation with respect to anisotropic surface energies

We extend Allard's celebrated rectifiability theorem to the setting of varifolds with locally bounded first variation with respect to an anisotropic integrand. In particular, we identify a sufficient and necessary condition on the integrand to obtain the rectifiability of every \(d\)-dimensional varifold with locally bounded first variation and positive \(d\)-dimensional density. In codimension one, this condition is shown to be equivalent to the strict convexity of the integrand with respect to the tangent plane.

Regularity of Minimizers of Shape Optimization Problems involving Perimeter

We prove existence and regularity of optimal shapes for the problem$$\min\Big\{P(Ω)+\mathcal{G}(Ω):\ Ω\subset D,\ |Ω|=m\Big\},$$where $P$ denotes the perimeter, $|\cdot|$ is the volume, and the functional $\mathcal{G}$ is either one of the following:\textless{}ul\textgreater{}\textless{}li\textgreater{} the Dirichlet energy $E\_f$, with respect to a (possibly sign-changing) function $f\in L^p$;\textless{}/li\textgreater{}\textless{}li\textgreater{}a spectral functional of the form $F(λ\_{1},\dots,λ\_{k})$, where $λ\_k$ is the $k$th eigenvalue of the Dirichlet Laplacian and $F:\mathbb{R}^k\to\mathbb{R}$ is Lipschitz continuous and increasing in each variable.\textless{}/li\textgreater{}\textless{}/ul\textgreater{}The domain $D$ is the whole space $\mathbb{R}^d$ or a bounded domain. We also give general assumptions on the functional $\mathcal{G}$ so that the result remains valid.

On a conjecture of Cheeger

This note details how a recent structure theorem for normal $1$-currents proved by the first and third author allows to prove a conjecture of Cheeger concerning the structure of Lipschitz differentiability spaces. More precisely, we show that the push-forward of the measure from a Lipschitz differentiability space under a chart is absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure.

On the structure of ${\mathscr A}$-free measures and applications

We establish a general structure theorem for the singular part of ${\mathscr A}$-free Radon measures, where ${\mathscr A}$ is a linear PDE operator. By applying the theorem to suitably chosen differential operators ${\mathscr A}$, we obtain a simple proof of Alberti's rank-one theorem and, for the first time, its extensions to functions of bounded deformation (BD). We also prove a structure theorem for the singular part of a finite family of normal currents. The latter result implies that the Rademacher theorem on the differentiability of Lipschitz functions can hold only for absolutely continuous measures and that every top-dimensional Ambrosio--Kirchheim metric current in $\mathbb R^d$ is a Federer-Fleming flat chain.

Structure of solutions of multidimensional conservation laws with discontinuous flux and applications to uniqueness

We investigate the structure of solutions of conservation laws with discontinuous flux under quite general assumption on the flux. We show that any entropy solution admits traces on the discontinuity set of the coefficients and we use this to prove the validity of a generalized Kato inequality for any pair of solutions. Applications to uniqueness of solutions are then given.

A nonautonomous chain rule in $W^{1,p}$ and $BV$

In this paper we consider the chain rule formula for compositions $x\mapsto F(x, u(x))$ in the case when $u$ has a Sobolev or BV regularity and $F(x,z)$ is separately Sobolev, or BV, with respect to $x$ and $C^1$ with respect to $z$. Our results extend to this "nonautonomous" case the results known for compositions $x\mapsto F(u(x))$.

BV Estimates in Optimal Transportation and Applications

In this paper we study the BV regularity for solutions of variational problems in Optimal Transportation. As an application we recover BV estimates for solutions of some non-linear parabolic PDE by means of optimal transportation techniques. We also prove that the Wasserstein projection of a measure with BV density on the set of measures with density bounded by a given BV function f is of bounded variation as well. In particular, in the case f = 1 (projection onto a set of densities with an L^\infty bound) we precisely prove that the total variation of the projection does not exceed the total variation of the projected measure. This is an estimate which can be iterated, and is therefore very useful in some evolutionary PDEs (crowd motion,. . .). We also establish some properties of the Wasserstein projection which are interesting in their own, and allow for instance to prove uniqueness of such a projection in a very general framework.
