A Ginzburg-Landau approximation theorem for quasilinear pattern-forming systems in uniformly local Sobolev spaces

We prove that the Ginzburg-Landau equation correctly predicts the dynamics of quasilinear or fully nonlinear pattern-forming systems close to the first instability. We present an approximation theory in uniform local Sobolev spaces which is applied to a quasilinear Swift-Hohenberg model, to a quasilinear version of Bénard's problem with velocity dependent viscosity, and to abstract quasilinear reaction-diffusion-advection systems.

On the Ginzburg-Landau approximation for quasilinear pattern forming reaction-diffusion-advection systems

We prove that the Ginzburg-Landau equation correctly predicts the dynamics of quasilinear pattern-forming reaction-diffusion-advection systems, close to the first instability. We present a simple theorem which is easily applicable for such systems and relies on key maximal regularity results. The theorem is applied to the Gray-Scott-Klausmeier vegetation-water interaction model and its application to general reaction-diffusion-advection systems is discussed.

Validity of the stochastic Ginzburg-Landau approximation in higher space dimensions -A Wiener algebra approach-

We consider an anisotropic $d$-dimensional Swift-Hohenberg model $ \mathcal{O}(\varepsilon^2) $-close to the first instability, where $ 0 < \varepsilon \ll 1 $ is a small perturbation parameter. This model for pattern formation is perturbed with additive noise in time and space. By a multiple scaling ansatz we derive a stochastic $ d $-dimensional Ginzburg-Landau equation for the approximate description of the bifurcating solutions. We prove the validity of the approximation by this amplitude equation on its natural time scale in case of $ d $-dimensional periodic domains of length $ \mathcal{O}(1/\varepsilon) $ for the Swift-Hohenberg model under suitable conditions on the additive noise. In detail, we prove the validity of this approximation for noise whose set of Fourier coefficients with respect to $ x $ is in $ \ell^1 $ for fixed $ t \geq 0 $. Moreover, we improve existing approximation results in the sense that the stable part of the noise can be larger.

Approximate Peregrine Solitons in Dispersive Nonlinear Wave Equations

The purpose of this short note is to explain how the existing results on the validity of the NLS approximation can be extended from Sobolev spaces $H^s(\mathbb{R})$ to the spaces of functions $u = v + w$ where $v \in H_{per}^s$ and $w \in H^s(\mathbb{R})$. This allows us to use the Peregrine solution of the NLS equation to find freak or rogue wave dynamics in more complicated systems.

Traveling waves in periodic metric graphs via spatial dynamics

The purpose of this work is to introduce a concept of traveling waves in the setting of periodic metric graphs. It is known that the nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger (NLS) equation on periodic metric graphs can be reduced asymptotically on long but finite time intervals to the homogeneous NLS equation, which admits traveling solitary wave solutions. In order to address persistence of such traveling waves beyond finite time intervals, we formulate the existence problem for traveling waves via spatial dynamics. There exist no spatially decaying (solitary) waves because of an infinite-dimensional center manifold in the spatial dynamics formulation. Existence of traveling modulating pulse solutions which are solitary waves with small oscillatory tails at very long distances from the pulse core is proven by using a local center-saddle manifold. We show that the variational formulation fails to capture existence of such modulating pulse solutions even in the singular limit of zero wave speeds where true (standing) solitary waves exist. Propagation of a traveling solitary wave and formation of a small oscillatory tail outside the pulse core is shown in numerical simulations of the NLS equation on the periodic graph.

Some remarks about an effective description of high-frequency wave-packet propagation

We consider systems of the form $ \partial_τ \mathcal U + \mathcal A(\partial_ξ) \mathcal U + \frac{1}{\varepsilon} \mathcal E \mathcal U = \mathcal T_{2}( \mathcal U , \mathcal U ) + \varepsilon \mathcal T_3( \mathcal U , \mathcal U , \mathcal U ), $ with $ 0 < \varepsilon \ll 1 $ a small perturbation parameter. We are interested in an effective description of high-frequency wave-packet propagation associated to highly oscillatory initial conditions $ \mathcal U (ξ,0) = \mathcal U_*(ξ) e^{ik_0 ξ/\varepsilon} + c.c.. $ By classical perturbation analysis for polarized initial conditions NLS approximations up to an arbitrary order and for non-polarized initial conditions a system of decoupled NLS equations can be derived for the approximate description of the associated solutions. Under the validity of a number of non-resonance conditions we prove error estimates between these formal approximations and true solutions of the original system. The result improves results from the existing literature in at least two directions, firstly, the handling of higher order approximations in case of quadratic nonlinearities $ \mathcal T_2(\mathcal U,\mathcal U)$ and secondly, the handling of non-polarized initial conditions.

On the long-wave approximation of solitary waves in cylindrical coordinates

We address justification and solitary wave solutions of the cylindrical KdV equation which is formally derived as a long wave approximation of radially symmetric waves in a two-dimensional nonlinear dispersive system. For a regularized Boussinesq equation, we prove error estimates between true solutions of this equation and the associated cylindrical KdV approximation in the L2-based spaces. The justification result holds in the spatial dynamics formulation of the regularized Boussinesq equation. We also prove that the class of solitary wave solutions considered previously in the literature does not contain solutions in the L2-based spaces. This presents a serious obstacle in the applicability of the cylindrical KdV equation for modeling of radially symmetric solitary waves since the long wave approximation has to be performed separately in different space-time regions.

On the Existence of Generalized Breathers and Transition Fronts in Time-Periodic Nonlinear Lattices

We prove the existence of a class of time-localized and space-periodic breathers (called q-gap breathers) in nonlinear lattices with time-periodic coefficients. These q-gap breathers are the counterparts to the classical space-localized and time-periodic breathers found in space-periodic systems. Using normal form transformations, we establish rigorously the existence of such solutions with oscillating tails (in the time domain) that can be made arbitrarily small, but finite. Due to the presence of the oscillating tails, these solutions are coined generalized q-gap breathers. Using a multiple-scale analysis, we also derive a tractable amplitude equation that describes the dynamics of breathers in the limit of small amplitude. In the presence of damping, we demonstrate the existence of transition fronts that connect the trivial state to the time-periodic ones. The analytical results are corroborated by systematic numerical simulations.

Traveling modulating pulse solutions with small tails for a nonlinear wave equation in periodic media

Traveling modulating pulse solutions consist of a small amplitude pulse-like envelope moving with a constant speed and modulating a harmonic carrier wave. Such solutions can be approximated by solitons of an effective nonlinear Schrodinger equation arising as the envelope equation. We are interested in a rigorous existence proof of such solutions for a nonlinear wave equation with spatially periodic coefficients. Such solutions are quasi-periodic in a reference frame co-moving with the envelope. We use spatial dynamics, invariant manifolds, and near-identity transformations to construct such solutions on large domains in time and space. Although the spectrum of the linearized equations in the spatial dynamics formulation contains infinitely many eigenvalues on the imaginary axis or in the worst case the complete imaginary axis, a small denominator problem is avoided when the solutions are localized on a finite spatial domain with small tails in far fields.

NLS approximation for a scalar FPUT system on a 2D square lattice with a cubic nonlinearity

We consider a scalar Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou (FPUT) system on a square 2D lattice with a cubic nonlinearity. For such systems the NLS equation can be derived to describe the evolution of an oscillating moving wave packet of small amplitude which is slowly modulated in time and space. We show that this NLS approximation makes correct predictions about the dynamics of the original scalar FPUT system for the strain and the displacement variables.

Global existence for long wave Hopf unstable spatially extended systems with a conservation law

We are interested in reaction-diffusion systems, with a conservation law, exhibiting a Hopf bifurcation at the spatial wave number $k = 0$. With the help of a multiple scaling perturbation ansatz a Ginzburg-Landau equation coupled to a scalar conservation law can be derived as an amplitude system for the approximate description of the dynamics of the original reaction-diffusion system near the first instability. We use the amplitude system to show the global existence of all solutions starting in a small neighborhood of the weakly unstable ground state for original systems posed on a large spatial interval with periodic boundary conditions.

Diffusive stability and self-similar decay for the harmonic map heat flow

In this paper we study the harmonic map heat flow on the euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^d$ and we show an unconditional uniqueness result for maps with small initial data in the homogeneous Besov space $\dot{B}^{\frac{d}{p}}_{p,\infty}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ where $d<p<\infty$. As a consequence we obtain decay rates for solutions of the harmonic map flow of the form $\|\nabla u(t) \|_{L^\infty(\mathbb{R}^d)}\leq Ct^{-\frac12}$. Additionally, under the assumption of a stronger spatial localization of the initial conditions, we show that the temporal decay happens in a self-similar way. We also explain that similar results hold for the biharmonic map heat flow and the semilinear heat equation with a power-type nonlinearity.

Pattern formation in 2d stochastic anisotropic Swift-Hohenberg equation

In this paper, we study a phenomenological model for pattern formation in electroconvection, and the effect of noise on the pattern. As such model we consider an anisotropic Swift-Hohenberg equation adding an additive noise. We prove the existence of a global solution of that equation on the two dimensional torus. In addition, inserting a scaling parameter, we consider the equation on a large domain near its change of stability. We observe numerically that, under the appropriate scaling, its solutions can be approximated by a periodic wave, which is modulated by the solutions to a stochastic Ginzburg-Landau equation.

Breather solutions for a semilinear Klein-Gordon equation on a periodic metric graph

We consider the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation $\partial_t^2u(x,t)-\partial_x^2u(x,t)+αu(x,t)=\pm|u(x,t)|^{p-1}u(x,t)$ on a periodic metric graph (necklace graph) for $p>1$ with Kirchhoff conditions at the vertices. Under suitable assumptions on the frequency we prove the existence and regularity of infinitely many spatially localized time-periodic solutions (breathers) by variational methods. We compare our results with previous results obtained via spatial dynamics and center manifold techniques. Moreover, we deduce regularity properties of the solutions and show that they are weak solutions of the corresponding initial value problem. Our approach relies on the existence of critical points for indefinite functionals, the concentration compactness principle, and the proper set-up of a functional analytic framework. Compared to earlier work for breathers using variational techniques, a major improvement of embedding properties has been achieved. This allows in particular to avoid all restrictions on the exponent $p>1$ and to achieve higher regularity.

Moving modulating pulse and front solutions of permanent form in a FPU model with nearest and next-to-nearest neighbor interaction

We consider a nonlinear chain of coupled oscillators, which is a direct generalization of the classical FPU lattice and exhibits, besides the usual nearest neighbor interaction, also next-to-nearest neighbor interaction. For the case of nearest neighbor attraction and next-to-nearest neighbor repulsion we prove that such a lattice admits, in contrast to the classical FPU model, moving modulating front solutions of permanent form, which have small converging tails at infinity and can be approximated by solitary wave solutions of the Nonlinear Schrödinger equation. When the associated potentials are even, then the proof yields moving modulating pulse solutions of permanent form, whose profiles are spatially localized. Our analysis employs the spatial dynamics approach as developed by Iooss and Kirchgässner. The relevant solutions are constructed on a five-dimensional center manifold and their persistence is guaranteed by reversibility arguments.

KP-II approximation for a scalar FPU system on a 2D square lattice

We consider a scalar Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) system on a square 2D lattice. The Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP-II) equation can be derived by means of multiple scale expansions to describe unidirectional long waves of small amplitude with slowly varying transverse modulations. We show that the KP-II approximation makes correct predictions about the dynamics of the original scalar FPU system. An existing approximation result is extended to an arbitrary direction of wave propagation. The main novelty of this work is the use of Fourier transform in the analysis of the FPU system in strain variables.

Nonlinear stability of periodic roll solutions in the real Ginzburg-Landau equation against $C_{\mathrm{ub}}^m$-perturbations

The real Ginzburg-Landau equation arises as a universal amplitude equation for the description of pattern-forming systems exhibiting a Turing bifurcation. It possesses spatially periodic roll solutions which are known to be stable against localized perturbations. It is the purpose of this paper to prove their stability against bounded perturbations, which are not necessarily localized. Since all state-of-the-art techniques rely on localization or periodicity properties of perturbations, we develop a new method, which employs pure $L^\infty$-estimates only. By fully exploiting the smoothing properties of the semigroup generated by the linearization, we are able to close the nonlinear iteration despite the slower decay rates. To show the wider relevance of our method, we also apply it to the amplitude equation as it appears for pattern-forming systems with an additional conservation law.
