Magnetic Order in bilayer Ruddlesden-Popper Nickelates

The recent discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in the bilayer nickelate La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ has led to extensive interest in the correlation physics of its normal state. Given that the superconducitivity develops near a density wave order in the phase diagram, it is important to elucidate the nature of this order. Based on the accumulated experimental evidence for a bad metal state in proximity to an orbital-selective Mott phase, here we describe magnetic correlations of the system in a conceptually new way -- in terms of effective local moments experiencing a combination of RKKY and superexchange interactions. This gives rise to a magnetic order with a wavevector that is close to $\mathbf{Q}=(\pi/2,\pi/2)$ and, at the same time, yields a clear understanding of the associated spin dynamics. Our results are consistent with the rapidly emerging experiments about the magnetic correlations in the density wave order of the bilayer nickelate. Implications for unconventional superconductivity in this and related multiorbital systems are discussed.

WF-Bench: A Benchmark for Neural Network WaveFunction Expressivity and Scaling Laws

We present a comprehensive benchmarking dataset and empirical scaling law analysis for neural network wavefunctions by matching them to a wide spectrum of famous many body target wavefunctions. The dataset, WF-Bench, spans multiple distinct regimes of strongly correlated quantum matter, including topological states, Wigner crystals, and superconducting wavefunctions, providing a diverse and challenging test bed for neural network wavefunction expressivity. We introduce a systematic and reproducible benchmarking protocol for target wavefunction matching, enabling consistent performance evaluation across different neural network wavefunction architectures. By using wavefunction fidelity as the uniform metric, we discover empirical scaling laws that characterize how representability depends on system size and key model parameters, including number of determinant and model depth. By applying our benchmark protocol on Psiformer and Ferminet, we show that WF-Bench establishes a unified dataset driven framework for evaluating and comparing neural network wavefunctions and for guiding the design of future architectures.

Cascade of Spin Liquids in a Bilayer Triangular-lattice Antiferromagnet Rb_2Co_2(SeO_3)_3

In frustrated Ising magnets, classical spin liquids (CSLs) with macroscopic ground-state degeneracy can survive against conventional magnetic order, as exemplified by systems on triangular, kagome and pyrochlore lattices at zero field. Here we report the discovery of a high-field route toward spin liquids in a bilayer triangular lattice antiferromagnet, Rb$_2$Co$_2$(SeO$_3$)$_3$. We demonstrate that a cascade of CSLs -- characterized by doubly degenerate one-up-one-down local spin configurations and a residual entropy of 1/2(1-M/M_s)Rln2 per mole -- emerges through field-controlled dilution of Ising dimers. Owing to the interplay of intra- and inter-layer interactions, these CSLs are further stabilized by lattice symmetry breaking at fractional magnetization plateaus. Such field-induced spin liquids can be understood as a consequence of generalized ice rules, analogous to those governing in pyrochlore antiferromagnets. In particular, the 5/6-plateau state is a candidate quantum spin liquid. Our results thereby establish a new pathway for exploring diverse spin liquid states across both classical and quantum regimes.

Towards Verifiable and Self-Correcting AI Physicists for Quantum Many-Body Simulations

While large language models (LLMs) promise to revolutionize automated scientific discovery, their application in rigorous real-world physical research is stalled by two critical barriers: a lack of realistic evaluation benchmarks and systemic LLM hallucinations. Here, we address both problems. We introduce QMP-Bench, a pioneering end-to-end research-level benchmark in quantum many-body simulation consisting of $100$ tasks extracted from $21$ high-impact prestigious journals, presenting a challenge even for current frontier LLMs. To establish a paradigm for reliable and transparent AI physicists, we present PhysVEC, a multi-agent framework that enforces self-verifiable and error correction in AI research. PhysVEC seamlessly integrates programming and scientific verifiers to guarantee coding correctness and principle-based physical validity, yielding interpretable evidence and error correction at each step. PhysVEC significantly outperforms existing LLM baselines on various scenarios in QMP-Bench and presents a favorable inference-time scaling, successfully transforming unreliable AI generations into accurate physical reproductions, paving a robust and trustworthy path towards future automated scientific discovery.

NMR evidence of spin supersolid and Pomeranchuk effect behaviors in the triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Rb$_2$Ni$_2$(SeO$_3$)$_3$

We performed $^{85}$Rb nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements on the $S$ = 1 bilayer triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Rb$_2$Ni$_2$(SeO$_3$)$_3$ in magnetic fields up to 26 T. In the field range from 3 T to 26 T, the NMR spectral lines split and their respective spectral weight ratios reveal the existence of the magnetic up-up-down (UUD) phase, although the 1/3-plateau phase is only reached at fields above 16 T. Two distinct gapless regimes are further identified: one at low fields and low temperatures, and the other at high fields and high temperatures, consistent with the spin supersolid Y and V phases. Notably, the UUD-V phase boundary exhibits a negative slope in $dT/dH$, where the supersolid phase is located at temperatures above the solid phase due to strong low-energy spin fluctuations.

Emergence of Kugel-Khomskii physics in quarter-filled bilayer correlated systems

We present a theoretical study of the low-energy physics of a quarter-hole-filled two-orbital bilayer Hubbard model motivated by transition-metal bilayer systems with strong orbital-selective interlayer hybridization. By explicitly treating the strong interlayer bonding of dz2 orbitals within a molecular orbital basis and projecting out high-energy electronic states, we derive a low-energy effective Kugel-Khomskii Hamiltonian describing the interplay between electron spin and emergent layer pseudospin degrees of freedom. We map out a rich ground state phase diagram featuring diverse spin and charge ordered states. These include conventional ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases with layer staggered charge densities, a layer-coherent phase characterized by spontaneous interlayer quantum coherence, and a novel maximally spin-layer-entangled phase with a hidden composite spin-layer order. We show that this exotic hidden ordered phase arises from the spontaneous breaking of an emergent O(4) symmetry down to a O(3), manifesting a unique excitation spectrum with three entangled gapless Goldstone modes. Our results uncover a geometrically driven mechanism for realizing composite entanglement in strongly correlated bilayer systems and provide a concrete theoretical framework relevant to bilayer nickelate superconductors and other multi-component correlated materials.

Spinons, solitons and random singlets in the spin-chain compound copper benzoate

The $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain is a paradigmatic quantum system hosting exotic excitations such as spinons and solitons, and forming random singlet state in the presence of quenched disorder. Realizing and distinguishing these excitations in a single material remains a significant challenge. Using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) on a high-quality single crystal of copper benzoate, we identify and characterize all three excitation types by tuning the magnetic field at ultra-low temperatures. At a low field of 0.2 T, a temperature-independent spin-lattice relaxation rate ($1/T_1$) over more than a decade confirms the presence of spinons. Below 0.4 K, an additional relaxation channel emerges, characterized by $1/T_1 \propto T$ and a spectral weight growing as $-\ln(T/T_0)$, signaling a random-singlet ground state induced by weak quenched disorder. At fields above 0.5 T, a field-induced spin gap $\Delta \propto H^{2/3}$ observed in both $1/T_1$ and the Knight shift signifies soliton excitations. Our results establish copper benzoate as a unique experimental platform for studying one-dimensional quantum integrability and the interplay of disorder and correlations.

Orbital-selective correlation effects and superconducting pairing symmetry in a multiorbital $t$-$J$ model for bilayer nickelates

The recent discovery of superconductivity in La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ raises key questions about its mechanism and the nature of pairing symmetry. This system is believed to be described by a bilayer two-orbital Hubbard model. The considerations of orbital-selective Mott correlations motivate a bilayer two-orbital $t$-$J$ model and, accordingly, we study the superconducting pairing in this model. We obtain an overall phase diagram of superconductivity, where the leading channel has either extended $s$-wave or $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave symmetry. Our analysis highlights how the orbital-selective correlations affect the superconducting pairing via the interlayer exchange couplings and low-energy electronic structure. In particular, we find that the dominant orbital for the pairing may change between $z^2$ and $x^2-y^2$ when the position of the bonding $z^2$ band is varied by tuning either the $c$-axis lattice constant or electron concentration strength. We discuss the implications of these results for the superconductivity in both bulk La$_{3}$Ni$_{2}$O$_{7}$ and its thin film counterpart.

Orbital-selective electron correlations in high-$T_{\rm c}$ bilayer nickelates: from a global phase diagram to implications for spectroscopy

Motivated by the high temperature superconductivity observed in the bilayer nickelate La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ and the spectroscopic evidences of strong electron correlations in this compound, we address the role of its multiorbital electron correlations by proposing a global phase diagram of a bilayer two-orbital Hubbard model. We find a Mott transition developing at half filling, and identify strong orbital selectivity when the system is at the physical electron count. The orbital selectivity is manifested in the formation of interlayer spin singlets between electrons in the $z^2$ orbitals. These features lead to a strong renormalization of the electronic band structure while sustaining a sizable splitting between the bonding and antibonding $z^2$ bands. The proposed orbital-selective correlations naturally explain a series of features as observed in the angular resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and optical conductivity measurements in La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$. Our results provide a basis to understand both the normal state and the high temperature superconductivity of multilayer nickelates and thereby elucidate correlated superconductivity in general.

Theory of rare-earth Kramers magnets on a Shastry-Sutherland lattice: dimer phases in presence of strong spin-orbit coupling

Shastry-Sutherland magnet is a typical frustrated spin system hosting rich phases. While the Heisenberg limit has been extensively studied, the role of spin-orbit coupling is not well explored. Motivated by newly discovered rare-earth Shastry-Sutherland magnets, we construct a generic effective-spin model that describes the interactions between Kramers doublet local moments on a Shastry-Sutherland lattice. Due to the strong spin-orbit coupling, the model takes the form of extended XYZ interactions on both intra- and inter-dimer bonds. We show that, in addition to the conventional "singlet" dimer phase, strong spin-orbit coupling can stabilize peculiar "triplet" dimer phases. These "triplet" dimer phases, though fully gapped, respond immediately to magnetic fields and evolve smoothly into the fully polarized phase. We present that the recently discovered Shastry-Sutherland magnet Yb$_2$Be$_2$GeO$_7$ belongs to the "triplet" dimer phase, and discuss the implication of our results to a broad class of quantum magnets in general.

Spin excitations of the Shastry-Sutherland model -- altermagnetism and deconfined quantum criticality

Frustrated quantum magnets can host a variety of exotic spin excitations, including fractionalized spin excitations coupled to emergent gauge fields at deconfined quantum critical points (DQCPs) and chiral magnons in altermagnets. Here, we investigate the spin excitation spectra of the highly frustrated $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic (AFM) Shastry-Sutherland model, focusing on the evolution of low-energy collective modes from the N\'{e}el AFM phase to the plaquette valence bond solid (PVBS). We demonstrate that the AFM state exhibits altermagnetic behavior, characterized by a non-relativistic splitting between two chiral magnon bands. Furthermore, we identify two additional low-energy excitations: a Higgs mode in the longitudinal excitation channel and an $S=0$ excitation with vanishing spectral weight. As the system approaches the AFM-to-PVBS transition, both these modes soften along with the lowest-energy triplet and singlet modes in the PVBS state. The closing gap of the Higgs mode, combined with the nearly degenerate velocities of $S=1$ and $S=0$ excitations, provides spectral evidence that the AFM-to-PVBS transition is proximate to a DQCP with emergent $O(4)$ symmetry. Our results help clarify the spectral signature of a broad class of symmetry enhanced quantum phase transitions including deconfined quantum criticality.

Theory of magnetism for rare-earth magnets on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice with non-Kramers ions

Motivated by the rapid experimental progress on the rare-earth Shastry-Sutherland lattice magnets, we propose a generic effective spin model that describes interacting non-Kramers local moments on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice. We point out that the local moments consist of both magnetic dipole and quadrupole components and the effective model turns out to be an extended XYZ model with an intrinsic field that accounts for the crystal field splitting. We then study the ground-state phase diagram of the model and find that pure quadrupole orders, which are invisible to conventional experimental probes, can be stabilized over a broad regime. In particular, we show that a hidden ``1/3 magnetization plateau'' with quadrupole orders generally exists and discuss its experimental signatures. Finally, we discuss the relevance of our results to the rare-earth Shastry-Sutherland lattice magnets Pr$_{2}$Ga$_{2}$BeO$_{7}$ and Pr$_{2}$Be$_{2}$GeO$_{7}$.

Evidence for field induced quantum spin liquid behavior in a spin-1/2 honeycomb magnet

One of the most important issues in modern condensed matter physics is the realization of fractionalized excitations, such as the Majorana excitations in the Kitaev quantum spin liquid. To this aim, the 3d-based Kitaev material Na2Co2TeO6 is a promising candidate whose magnetic phase diagram of B // a* contains a field-induced intermediate magnetically disordered phase within 7.5 T < |B| < 10 T. The experimental observations, including the restoration of the crystalline point group symmetry in the angle-dependent torque and the coexisting magnon excitations and spinon-continuum in the inelastic neutron scattering spectrum, provide strong evidence that this disordered phase is a field induced quantum spin liquid with partially polarized spins. Our variational Monte Carlo simulation with the effective K-J1-Γ-Γ'-J3 model reproduces the experimental data and further supports this conclusion.

Electron correlations and superconductivity in La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ under pressure tuning

Motivated by the recent discovery of superconductivity in La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ under pressure, we discuss the basic ingredients of a model that captures its microscopic physics under pressure tuning. We anchor our description in terms of the spectroscopic evidence of strong correlations in this system. In a bilayer Hubbard model including the Ni $3d$ $x^2-y^2$ and $z^2$ orbitals, we show the ground state of the model crosses over from a low-spin $S=1/2$ state to a high-spin $S=3/2$ state. In the high-spin state, the two $x^2-y^2$ and the bonding $z^2$ orbitals are all close to half-filling, which promotes a strong orbital selectivity in a broad crossover regime of the phase diagram pertinent to the system. Based on these results, we construct an effective multiorbital $t$-$J$ model to describe the superconductivity of the system, and find the leading pairing channel to be an intraorbital spin singlet with a competition between the extended $s$-wave and $d_{x^2-y^2}$ symmetries. Our results highlight the role of strong multiorbital correlation effects in driving the superconductivity of La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$.
