Entanglement entropy in de Sitter space

We compute the entanglement entropy for some quantum field theories on de Sitter space. We consider a superhorizon size spherical surface that divides the spatial slice into two regions, with the field theory in the standard vacuum state. First, we study a free massive scalar field. Then, we consider a strongly coupled field theory with a gravity dual, computing the entanglement using the gravity solution. In even dimensions, the interesting piece of the entanglement entropy is proportional to the number of e-foldings that elapsed since the spherical region was inside the horizon. In odd dimensions it is contained in a certain finite piece. In both cases the entanglement captures the long range correlations produced by the expansion.

On Loops in Inflation III: Time Independence of zeta in Single Clock Inflation

Studying loop corrections to inflationary perturbations, with particular emphasis on infrared factors, is important to understand the consistency of the inflationary theory, its predictivity and to establish the existence of the slow-roll eternal inflation phenomena and its recently found volume bound. In this paper we prove that the zeta correlation function is time-independent at one-loop level in single clock inflation. While many of the one-loop diagrams lead to a time-dependence when considered individually, the time-dependence beautifully cancels out in the overall sum. We identify two subsets of diagrams that cancel separately due to different physical reasons. The first cancellation is related to the change of the background cosmology due to the renormalization of the stress tensor. It results in a cancellation between the non-1PI diagrams and some of the diagrams made with quartic vertices. The second subset of diagrams that cancel is made up of cubic operators, plus the remaining quartic ones. We are able to write the sum of these diagrams as the integral over a specific three-point function between two very short wavelengths and one very long one. We then apply the consistency condition for this three-point function in the squeezed limit to show that the sum of these diagrams cannot give rise to a time dependence. This second cancellation is thus a consequence of the fact that in single clock inflation the attractor nature of the solution implies that a long wavelength zeta perturbation is indistinguishable from a trivial rescaling of the background, and so results in no physical effect on short wavelength modes.

On graviton non-Gaussianities during inflation

We consider the most general three point function for gravitational waves produced during a period of exactly de Sitter expansion. The de Sitter isometries constrain the possible shapes to only three: two preserving parity and one violating parity. These isometries imply that these correlation functions should be conformal invariant. One of the shapes is produced by the ordinary gravity action. The other shape is produced by a higher derivative correction and could be as large as the gravity contribution. The parity violating shape does not contribute to the bispectrum [1106.3228, 1108.0175], even though it is present in the wavefunction. We also introduce a spinor helicity formalism to describe de Sitter gravitational waves with circular polarization. These results also apply to correlation functions in Anti-de Sitter space. They also describe the general form of stress tensor correlation functions, in momentum space, in a three dimensional conformal field theory. Here all three shapes can arise, including the parity violating one.

Nanogap Transducer for Broadband Gravitational Wave Detection

By changing from a resonant multimode paradigm to a free mass paradigm for transducers in resonant mass gravitational wave detection, an array of six spheres can achieve a sensitivity response curve competitive with interferometers, being as sensitive as GEO600 and TAMA300 in the 3 to 6 kHz band and more sensitive than LIGO for 50 percent of the 6 to 10 kHz band. We study how to assemble a klystron resonant cavity that has a 1 nm gap by understanding the stability of the forces applied at it (Casimir force, elastic force, weight). This approach has additional benefits. First, due to the relatively inexpensive nature of this technology (around US$ 1 million), it is accessible to a broader part of the world scientific community. Additionally, spherical resonant mass detectors have the ability to discern both the direction and polarization resolutions.
