Uniqueness of D=8 minimal supergravity with two vector multiplets

There exist only four known string theories with minimal supersymmetry in eight dimensions, whose low energy effective descriptions are given by minimal supergravity coupled to $l=18$, $10$, or $2$ vector multiplets. It has been argued that these numbers are uniquely fixed by consistency conditions of the effective theory. In this work, we investigate the protected couplings of minimal supergravity coupled to two vector multiplets under the assumption that the theory admits a duality symmetry of the form $Γ_0(N)\times Γ_0(N)\subset {\rm SL}(2,\mathbb{Z}) \times {\rm SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$ for some positive integer $N$. We show that consistency with anomaly cancellation, higher-dimensional uplifts, and gauge enhancement loci strongly constrains the allowed couplings and isolates a unique consistent theory in the BPS sector. In particular, we find that the Bianchi identity for the three-form flux cannot have gravitational contributions.

A unique coupling of the massive spin-2 field to supergravity

We show that the coupling of a massive spin-2 field to undeformed N=1 supergravity in four dimensions is unique, leading to a specific non-minimal coupling to the Riemann tensor. The massive spin-2 coupling reproduces the one of an oscillator mode in open string theory, while the massive spin-1 coupling includes a higher-derivative term that is expected to violate causality in the background of a gravitational shock wave. We argue that the resolution of causality and the unitarity bound in the Regge limit require the introduction of infinitely many higher-spin fields similar to the Regge trajectories in string theory, therefore providing an argument in favour of the string lamppost principle with minimal supersymmetry in four dimensions. To obtain this result, we construct the general stress-energy tensor multiplet for the massive spin-2 multiplet with N=1 supersymmetry.

Higher dualities in $E_{11}$ exceptional field theory

It was proposed that there exists an $E_{11}$-invariant formulation of eleven-dimensional supergravity in which the propagating fields of the theory are realised through an infinite tower of higher duals. We show how to derive the propagating equations of the higher dual fields within $E_{11}$ exceptional field theory at the linearised level. Starting from the pseudo-Lagrangian, we construct parent actions for all higher gradient dual fields that are associated with the three-form, the six-form, and the dual graviton. We show that the resulting Euler-Lagrange equations constrain the St\"uckelberg fields to be pure curls, ensuring that the higher duals propagate the same physical degrees of freedom as the original supergravity fields. The additional St\"uckelberg fields, which are not predicted by the tensor hierarchy algebra, are shown to play a specific role as sources for the Labastida tensors of the higher dual fields.

Bounds on the next-to-leading Wilson coefficient in maximal supergravity

One expects type II string theory to be the unique ultraviolet completion of maximal supergravity. Motivated by the recent computation of the unitary bound on the leading Wilson coefficient within the S-matrix bootstrap, we analyse the minimum of the next-to-leading Wilson coefficient in string theory in seven spacetime dimensions. We find that the next-to-leading Wilson coefficient is minimum at the same point as the leading Wilson coefficient.

Saturating unitarity bounds at U-duality symmetric points

It has recently been shown that the leading Wilson coefficient in type II string theory can take (almost) all values allowed by unitarity, crossing symmetry and maximal supersymmetry in D=10 and D=9 dimensions. This suggests that string theory might define the unique consistent quantum theory of gravity with maximal supersymmetry. We study the minima of the leading Wilson coefficient in D=6, 7 and 8 dimensions and find the global minimum at the point in moduli space with maximal symmetry. The minimum value turns out to always be negative for D<8.

Twisted Orientifold planes and S-duality without supersymmetry

We construct a novel orientifold of type IIB string theory that breaks all supersymmetries. It is a closed string theory without open sector and it can be understood as a Scherk-Schwarz deformation in which supersymmetry is restored at infinite radius. We conjecture that it is realised in F-theory as a compactification on a freely acting orbifold that acts as the reflection on the elliptic fibre. The SL(2,Z) selfduality is manifest in the F-theory formulation. We construct explicitly the D-branes in this model and find that stable D-branes match the geometric prediction in M-theory. This theory has the salient feature that the O-planes couple only to the massive twisted states of the theory. We call them twisted O-planes. We describe supersymmetric examples of such twisted O-planes and argue that they are similar in nature to combinations of O+ and O- planes with vanishing total charge.

Teleparallel Geroch geometry

We construct the teleparallel dynamics for extended geometry where the structure algebra is (an extension of) an untwisted affine Kac-Moody algebra. This provides a geometrisation of the Geroch symmetry appearing on dimensional reduction of a gravitational theory to two dimensions. The formalism is adapted to the underlying tensor hierarchy algebra, and will serve as a stepping stone towards the geometrisation of other infinite-dimensional, e.g. hyperbolic, symmetries.

Consistent truncation of eleven-dimensional supergravity on $S^8\times S^1$

Eleven-dimensional supergravity on $S^8\times S^1$ is conjectured to be dual to the M-theory matrix model. We prove that the dynamics of a subset of fluctuations around this background is consistently described by D=2 SO(9) gauged maximal supergravity. We provide the full non-linear uplift formulae for all bosonic fields. We also present a further truncation to the SO(3)$\times$SO(6) invariant sector and discuss its relation to the BMN matrix model at finite temperature. The construction relies on the framework of generalised Scherk-Schwarz reductions, established for E$_9$ exceptional field theory in a companion paper. As a by-product, we severely constrain the most general gauge deformations in D=2 admitting an uplift to higher dimensions.

Maximal D=2 supergravities from higher dimensions

We develop in detail the general framework of consistent Kaluza-Klein truncations from D=11 and type II supergravities to gauged maximal supergravities in two dimensions. In particular, we unveil the complete bosonic dynamics of all gauged maximal supergravities that admit a geometric uplift. Our construction relies on generalised Scherk-Schwarz reductions of E$_9$ exceptional field theory. The application to the reduction of D=11 supergravity on $S^8\times S^1$ to SO(9) gauged supergravity is presented in a companion paper.

Non-geometric BPS branes on T-folds

We give a detailed (microscopic) description of the geometric and non-geometric fundamental branes and their bound states in Type II superstring compactifications preserving N=6 supersymmetry. We consider general boundary states that couple to the twisted sector and compute the relevant annulus amplitudes. We check consistency of the construction by relating the transverse channel, corresponding to closed-string tree-level exchange, with the direct open-string loop channel. Focussing on the Type IIA frame, we show that D0-D4 have the expected tension for a geometric brane, while the non-geometric D2-D6 boundary states have a tension equal to $1/\sqrt{K}$ the one of a geometric brane for the $\mathbb{Z}_K$ orbifold. This is consistent with Fricke T-duality of the N=6 model.

Extended geometry of magical supergravities

We provide, through the framework of extended geometry, a geometrisation of the duality symmetries appearing in magical supergravities. A new ingredient is the general formulation of extended geometry with structure group of non-split real form. A simple diagrammatic rule for solving the section constraint by inspection of the Satake diagram is derived.

Consistent Kaluza-Klein truncations and two-dimensional gauged supergravity

We consider generalized Scherk-Schwarz reductions of E$_9$ exceptional field theory to D=2 space-time dimensions and in particular construct the resulting scalar potential of all gauged supergravities that can be obtained in this way. This provides the first general expression for a multitude of theories with an interesting structure of vacua, covering potentially many new AdS$_2$ cases. As an application, we prove the consistency of the truncation of eleven-dimensional supergravity on $S^8\times S^1$ to SO(9) gauged maximal supergravity. Fluctuations around its supersymmetric SO(9)-invariant vacuum describe holographically the dynamics of interacting D0-branes.

Perturbative higher-derivative terms in N=6 asymmetric orbifolds

We analyse the perturbative four-point amplitudes in the simplest string theory examples of T-fold backgrounds, which enjoy N=6 supersymmetries in four dimensions. There are two theories defined as asymmetric orbifolds of order 2 and 3, respectively. The perturbative spectrum and the one-loop four-point amplitudes are shown to be invariant under an arithmetic symplectic group defined over the Hurwitz (respectively Eisenstein) quaternions. The supersymmetry constraints on the low energy effective couplings are determined and we conjecture the U-duality group of the theory and the non-perturbative completion of the six-derivative coupling as a rank one theta series. We discuss the non-perturbative spectrum of BPS states in the light of our analysis.

A master exceptional field theory

We construct a pseudo-Lagrangian that is invariant under rigid $E_{11}$ and transforms as a density under $E_{11}$ generalised diffeomorphisms. The gauge-invariance requires the use of a section condition studied in previous work on $E_{11}$ exceptional field theory and the inclusion of constrained fields that transform in an indecomposable $E_{11}$-representation together with the $E_{11}$ coset fields. We show that, in combination with gauge-invariant and $E_{11}$-invariant duality equations, this pseudo-Lagrangian reduces to the bosonic sector of non-linear eleven-dimensional supergravity for one choice of solution to the section condition. For another choice, we reobtain the $E_8$ exceptional field theory and conjecture that our pseudo-Lagrangian and duality equations produce all exceptional field theories with maximal supersymmetry in any dimension. We also describe how the theory entails non-linear equations for higher dual fields, including the dual graviton in eleven dimensions. Furthermore, we speculate on the relation to the $E_{10}$ sigma model.

Ultraviolet behavior of 6D supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories and harmonic superspace

We revisit the issue of higher-dimensional counterterms for the N=(1,1) supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory in six dimensions using the off-shell N=(1,0) and on-shell N=(1,1) harmonic superspace approaches. The second approach is developed in full generality and used to solve, for the first time, the N=(1,1) SYM constraints in terms of N=(1,0) superfields. This provides a convenient tool to write explicit expressions for the candidate counterterms and other N=(1,1) invariants and may be conducive to proving non-renormalization theorems needed to explain the absence of certain logarithmic divergences in higher-loop contributions to scattering amplitudes in N=(1,1) SYM.

E$_9$ exceptional field theory II. The complete dynamics

We construct the first complete exceptional field theory that is based on an infinite-dimensional symmetry group. E$_9$ exceptional field theory provides a unified description of eleven-dimensional and type IIB supergravity covariant under the affine Kac-Moody symmetry of two-dimensional maximal supergravity. We present two equivalent formulations of the dynamics, which both rely on a pseudo-Lagrangian supplemented by a twisted self-duality equation. One formulation involves a minimal set of fields and gauge symmetries, which uniquely determine the entire dynamics. The other formulation extends $\mathfrak{e}_9$ by half of the Virasoro algebra and makes direct contact with the integrable structure of two-dimensional supergravity. Our results apply directly to other affine Kac-Moody groups, such as the Geroch group of general relativity.

On supersymmetric E11 exceptional field theory

We construct an infinite system of non-linear duality equations, including fermions, that are invariant under global E11 and gauge invariant under generalised diffeomorphisms upon the imposition of a suitable section constraint. We use finite-dimensional fermionic representations of the R-symmetry E11 to describe the fermionic contributions to the duality equations. These duality equations reduce to the known equations of E8 exceptional field theory or eleven-dimensional supergravity for appropriate (partial) solutions of the section constraint. Of key importance in the construction is an indecomposable representation of E11 that entails extra non-dynamical fields beyond those predicted by E11 alone, generalising the known constrained p-forms of exceptional field theories. The construction hinges on the tensor hierarchy algebra extension of E11, both for the bosonic theory and its supersymmetric extension.
