Analyzing Multifiltering Functions Using Multiparameter Discrete Morse Theory

A multiparameter filtration, or a multifiltration, may in many cases be seen as the collection of sublevel sets of a vector function, which we call a multifiltering function. The main objective of this paper is to obtain a better understanding of such functions through multiparameter discrete Morse (MDM) theory, which is an extension of Morse-Forman theory to vector-valued functions. Notably, we prove algorithmically that any multifiltering function defined on a simplicial complex can always be approximated by a compatible MDM function. Moreover, we define the Pareto set of a discrete multifiltering function and show that the concept links directly to that of critical simplices of a MDM function. Finally, we experiment with these notions using triangular meshes.

Multiparameter Discrete Morse Theory

The main objective of this paper is to extend Morse-Forman theory to vector-valued functions. This is mostly motivated by the need to develop new tools and methods to compute multiparameter persistence. To generalize the theory, in addition to adapting the main definitions and results of Forman to this vectorial setting, we use concepts of combinatorial topological dynamics studied in recent years. This approach proves to be successful in the following ways. First, we establish a result which is more general than that of Forman regarding the sublevel sets of a multidimensional discrete Morse function. Second, we find a way to induce a Morse decomposition in critical components from the critical points of such a function. Finally, we deduce a set of Morse equation and inequalities specific to the multiparameter setting.

Characterization of the Principal 3D Slices Related to the Multicomplex Mandelbrot Set

This article focuses on the dynamics of the different tridimensional principal slices of the multicomplex Multibrot sets. First, we define an equivalence relation between those slices. Then, we characterize them in order to establish similarities between their behaviors. Finally, we see that any multicomplex tridimensional principal slice is equivalent to a tricomplex slice up to an affine transformation. This implies that, in the context of tridimensional principal slices, Multibrot sets do not need to be generalized beyond the tricomplex space.
