Correlations, Spectra and Entanglement Transitions in Ensembles of Matrix Product States

We investigate ensembles of Matrix Product States (MPSs) generated by quantum circuit evolution followed by projection onto MPSs with a fixed bond dimension $χ$. Specifically, we consider ensembles produced by: (i) random sequential unitary circuits, (ii) random brickwork unitary circuits, and (iii) circuits involving both unitaries and projective measurements. In all cases, we analyze the spectra of the MPS transfer matrices and relate them to the spreading of mutual information in the MPS state. We demonstrate how different features of the spectral density correspond to distinct types of circuits, revealing that these MPS ensembles retain crucial physical information about the underlying microscopic dynamics. Notably, in the presence of quantum monitoring, we show the existence of a measurement-induced entanglement transition (MIPT) in MPS ensembles, with the averaged dimension of the transfer matrix's null space serving as the effective order parameter.

Measurement-induced phase transitions by matrix product states scaling

We study the time evolution of long quantum spin chains subjected to continuous monitoring via matrix product states (MPS) at fixed bond dimension, with the Time-Dependent Variational Principle (TDVP) algorithm. The latter gives an effective classical non-linear evolution with a conserved charge, which approximates the real quantum evolution up to an error. We show that the error rate displays a phase transition in the monitoring strength, which can be well detected by scaling analysis with relatively low values of bond dimensions. The method allows for an efficient numerical determination of the critical measurement-induced phase transition parameters in many-body quantum systems. Moreover, in the presence of U(1) global spin charge, we show the existence of a charge-sharpening transition well separated from the entanglement transition which we detect by studying the charge fluctuations of a local sub-part of the system at very large times. Our work substantiates the TDVP time evolution as a method to identify measured-induced phase transitions in systems of arbitrary dimensions and sizes.

Three-stage thermalisation of a quasi-integrable system

We consider a system of classical hard rods or billiard balls in one dimension, initially prepared in a Bragg-pulse state at a given temperature and subjected to external periodic fields. We show that at late times the system always thermalises in the thermodynamic limit via a 3-stages process characterised by: an early phase where the dynamics is well described by Euler hydrodynamics, a subsequent where a (weak) turbulent phase is observed and where hydrodynamic gradient expansion can be broken, and a final one where the gas thermalises according to a viscous hydrodynamics. As the hard rod gas shares the same large-scale hydrodynamics as other quantum and classical integrable systems, we expect these features to universally characterise all many-body integrable systems in generic external potentials.

Squeezed ensembles and anomalous dynamic roughening in interacting integrable chains

It is widely accepted that local subsystems in isolated integrable quantum systems equilibrate to generalized Gibbs ensembles. Here, we demonstrate the failure of canonical generalized thermalization for a particular class of initial states in certain types of interacting integrable models. Particularly, we show that in the easy-axis regime of the quantum XXZ chain, pure non-equilibrium initial states with no magnetic fluctuations instead locally relax to squeezed generalized Gibbs ensembles, referring to exotic equilibrium states governed by non-local equilibrium Hamiltonians with sub-extensive charge fluctuations that violate the self-affine scaling. The behaviour at the isotropic point is exceptional and depends on the initial state. We find that relaxation from the Néel state is governed by extensive fluctuations and a super-diffusive dynamical exponent compatible with the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality. On the other hand, there are other non-fluctuating initial states that display diffusive scaling. Our predictions can be directly tested in state-of-the-art cold atomic experimental settings.

Hydrodynamic relaxation of spin helices

Motivated by recent cold atom experiments, we study the relaxation of spin helices in quantum XXZ spin chains. The experimentally observed relaxation of spin helices follows scaling laws that are qualitatively different from linear-response transport. We construct a theory of the relaxation of helices, combining generalized hydrodynamics (GHD) with diffusive corrections and the local density approximation. Although helices are far from local equilibrium (so GHD need not apply a priori), our theory reproduces the experimentally observed relaxational dynamics of helices. In particular, our theory explains the existence of temporal regimes with apparent anomalous diffusion, as well as the asymmetry between positive and negative anisotropy regimes.
