Gravitational radiation reaction for compact binary systems at the fourth-and-a-half post-Newtonian order in harmonic coordinates

We derive the gravitational radiation-reaction (RR) force in the harmonic coordinate system at the fourth-and-a-half post-Newtonian (4.5PN) order in the case of compact binary systems. Dimensional regularization is used to treat the ultra-violet divergences which appear at that order. We prove that the RR acceleration implies the known radiation fluxes at infinity associated with energy, angular momentum, linear momentum, and center-of-mass position. As a consistency check, we verify the manifest Lorentz invariance of the RR acceleration in harmonic coordinates. Our result should be useful for comparisons with other approaches such as the gravitational self force (GSF) and the post-Minkowskian (PM) effective field theory.

Waveform Modelling for the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna

LISA, the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna, will usher in a new era in gravitational-wave astronomy. As the first anticipated space-based gravitational-wave detector, it will expand our view to the millihertz gravitational-wave sky, where a spectacular variety of interesting new sources abound: from millions of ultra-compact binaries in our Galaxy, to mergers of massive black holes at cosmological distances; from the beginnings of inspirals that will venture into the ground-based detectors' view to the death spiral of compact objects into massive black holes, and many sources in between. Central to realising LISA's discovery potential are waveform models, the theoretical and phenomenological predictions of the pattern of gravitational waves that these sources emit. This white paper is presented on behalf of the Waveform Working Group for the LISA Consortium. It provides a review of the current state of waveform models for LISA sources, and describes the significant challenges that must yet be overcome.

Comparison of 4.5PN and 2SF gravitational energy fluxes from quasicircular compact binaries

Recent years have seen significant advances in models of gravitational waveforms emitted by quasicircular compact binaries in two regimes: the weak-field, post-Newtonian regime, in which the gravitational wave energy flux has now been calculated to fourth-and-a-half post-Newtonian order (4.5PN) [Phys. Rev. Lett. 131}, 121402 (2023)]; and the small-mass-ratio, gravitational self-force regime, in which the flux has now been calculated to second perturbative order in the mass ratio (2SF) [Phys. Rev. Lett. 127, 151102 (2021)]. We compare these results and find agreement, showing consistency between the two (very distinct though both first-principle) perturbative calculations.

Gyroscopic Gravitational Memory from quasi-circular binary systems

Gravitational waves cause freely falling spinning objects to precess, resulting in a net orientation change called gyroscopic memory. In this paper, we will consider isolated gravitational sources in the post-Newtonian framework and compute the gyroscopic precession and memory at leading post-Newtonian (PN) orders. We compare two competing contributions: the spin memory and the nonlinear helicity flux. At the level of the precession rate, the former is a 2PN oscillatory effect, while the latter is a 4PN adiabatic effect. However, the gyroscopic memory involves a time integration, which enhances subleading adiabatic effects by the fifth power of the velocity of light, leading to a 1.5PN memory effect. We explicitly compute the leading effects for a quasi-circular binary system and obtain the angular dependence of the memory on the celestial sphere.

Gravitational radiation reaction for compact binary systems at the fourth-and-a-half post-Newtonian order

We compute the gravitational radiation-reaction force on a compact binary source at the fourth-and-a-half post-Newtonian (4.5PN) order of general relativity, i.e., 2PN order beyond the leading 2.5PN radiation reaction. The calculation is valid for general orbits in a general frame, but in a particular coordinate system which is an extension of the Burke-Thorne coordinate system at the lowest order. With the radiation-reaction acceleration, we derive (from first principles) the flux-balance laws associated with the energy, the angular and linear momenta, and the center-of-mass position, in a general frame and up to 4.5PN order. Restricting our attention to the frame of the center of mass, we point out that the equations of motion acquire a non-local-in-time contribution at the 4.5PN order, made of the integrated flux of linear momentum (responsible for the recoil of the source) together with the instantaneous flux of center-of-mass position. The non-local contribution was overlooked in the past literature, which assumed locality of the radiation-reaction force in the center of mass frame at 4.5PN order. We discuss the consequences of this non-local effect and obtain consistent non-local equations of motion and flux balance laws at 4.5PN order in the center-of-mass frame.

Tidal effects in the gravitational-wave phase evolution of compact binary systems to next-to-next-to-leading post-Newtonian order

We compute the gravitational-wave (GW) energy flux up to the next-to-next-to-leading (NNL) order of tidal effects in a spinless compact binary system on quasi-circular orbits. Starting from an effective matter action, we obtain the stress-energy tensor of the system, which we use in a GW generation formalism based on multipolar-post-Minkowskian (MPM) and post-Newtonian (PN) approximations. The tidal contributions to the multipole moments of the system are first obtained, from which we deduce the instantaneous GW energy flux to NNL order (formally 7PN order). We also include the remaining tidal contributions of GW tails to the leading (formally 6.5PN) and NL (7.5PN) orders. Combining it with our previous work on the conservative equations of motion (EoM) and associated energy, we get the GW phase and frequency evolution through the flux-balance equation to the same NNL order. These results extend and complete several preceding results in the literature.

Gravitational Wave Flux and Quadrupole Modes from Quasi-Circular Non-Spinning Compact Binaries to the Fourth Post-Newtonian Order

This article provides the details on the technical derivation of the gravitational waveform and total gravitational-wave energy flux of non-spinning compact binary systems to the 4PN (fourth post-Newtonian) order beyond the Einstein quadrupole formula. In particular: (i) we overview the link between the radiative multipole moments measured at infinity and the source moments in the framework of dimensional regularization; (ii) we compute special corrections to the source moments due to "infrared" commutators arising at the 4PN order; (iii) we derive a "post-adiabatic" correction needed to evaluate the tail integral with 2.5PN relative precision; (iv) we discuss the relation between the binary's orbital frequency in quasi-circular orbit and the gravitational-wave frequency measured at infinity; (v) we compute the hereditary effects at the 4PN order, including those coming from the recently derived tails-of-memory; and (vi) we describe the various tests we have performed to ensure the correctness of the results. Those results are collected in an ancillary file.

Gravitational-Wave Phasing of Quasi-Circular Compact Binary Systems to the Fourth-and-a-Half post-Newtonian Order

The inspiral phase of gravitational waves emitted by spinless compact binary systems is derived through the fourth-and-a-half post-Newtonian (4.5PN) order beyond quadrupole radiation, and the leading amplitude mode ($\ell$, m) = (2, 2) is obtained at 4PN order. We also provide the radiated flux, as well as the phase in the stationary phase approximation. Rough numerical estimates for the contribution of each PN order are provided for typical systems observed by current and future gravitational wave detectors.

Multipole expansion of gravitational waves: memory effects and Bondi aspects

In our previous work, we proposed an algorithm to transform the metric of an isolated matter source in the multipolar post-Minkowskian approximation in harmonic (de Donder) gauge to the Newman-Unti gauge. We then applied this algorithm at linear order and for specific quadratic interactions known as quadratic tail terms. In the present work, we extend this analysis to quadratic interactions associated with the coupling of two mass quadrupole moments, including both instantaneous and hereditary terms. Our main result is the derivation of the metric in Newman-Unti and Bondi gauges with complete quadrupole-quadrupole interactions. We rederive the displacement memory effect and provide expressions for all Bondi aspects and dressed Bondi aspects relevant to the study of leading and subleading memory effects. Then we obtain the Newman-Penrose charges, the BMS charges as well as the second and third order celestial charges defined from the known second order and novel third order dressed Bondi aspects for mass monopole-quadrupole and quadrupole-quadrupole interactions.

The Quadrupole Moment of Compact Binaries to the Fourth post-Newtonian Order: From Source to Canonical Moment

As a crucial step towards the completion of the fourth post-Newtonian (4PN) gravitational-wave generation from compact binary systems, we obtain the expressions of the so-called "canonical" multipole moments of the source in terms of the "source" and "gauge" moments. The canonical moments describe the propagation of gravitational waves outside the source's near zone, while the source and gauge moments encode explicit information about the matter source. Those two descriptions, in terms of two sets of canonical moments or in terms of six sets of source and gauge moments, are isometric. We thus construct the non-linear diffeomorphism between them up to the third post-Minkowskian order, and we exhibit the concrete expression of the canonical mass-type quadrupole moment at the 4PN order. This computation is one of the last missing pieces for the determination of the gravitational-wave phasing of compact binary systems at 4PN order.

The Quadrupole Moment of Compact Binaries to the Fourth post-Newtonian Order: I. Non-Locality in Time and Infra-Red Divergencies

With the aim of providing high accuracy post-Newtonian (PN) templates for the analysis of gravitational waves generated by compact binary systems, we complete the analytical derivation of the source type mass quadrupole moment of compact binaries (without spins) at the fourth PN order of general relativity. Similarly to the case of the conservative 4PN equations of motion, we show that the quadrupole moment at that order contains a non-local (in time) contribution, arising from the tail-transported interaction entering the conservative part of the dynamics. Furthermore, we investigate the infra-red (IR) divergences of the quadrupole moment. In a previous work, this moment has been computed using a Hadamard partie finie procedure for the IR divergences, but the knowledge of the conservative equations of motion indicates that those divergences have to be dealt with by means of dimensional regularization. This work thus derives the difference between the two regularization schemes, which has to be added on top of the previous result. We show that unphysical IR poles start to appear at the 3PN order, and we determine all of these up to the 4PN order. In particular, the non-local tail term comes in along with a specific pole at the 4PN order. It will be proven in a companion paper that the poles in the source-type quadrupole are cancelled in the physical radiative type quadrupole moment measured at future null infinity.

The Quadrupole Moment of Compact Binaries to the Fourth post-Newtonian Order: II. Dimensional Regularization and Renormalization

The regularization and renormalization of the radiative mass-type quadrupole moment of inspiralling compact binaries (without spins) is investigated at the fourth post-Newtonian (4PN) approximation of general relativity. As clear from the conservative 4PN equations of motion, a dimensional regularization has to be implemented in order to properly treat the non-linear interactions experienced by gravitational waves during their propagation toward future null infinity. By implementing such procedure, we show that the poles coming from the source moment (computed in a companion paper) are exactly cancelled in the radiative moment, as expected for a physical quantity. We thus define and obtain a "renormalized" source quadrupole, three-dimensional by nature, which is an important step towards the computation of the gravitational-wave flux with 4PN accuracy. Furthermore, we explicitly prove the equivalence between the dimensional regularization and the previously used Hadamard partie finie scheme up to the 3PN order.

The current-type quadrupole moment and gravitational-wave mode $(\ell,m)=(2,1)$ of compact binary systems at the third post-Newtonian order

Up to the third post-Newtonian (3PN) order, we compute (i) the current-type quadrupole moment of (non-spinning) compact binary systems, as well as (ii) the corresponding gravitational-wave mode $(2,1)$ (constituting a 3.5PN correction in the waveform). Moreover, at this occasion, (iii) we recompute and confirm the previous calculation of the mass-type octupole moment to 3PN order. The ultra-violet (UV) divergences due to the point-like nature of the source are treated by means of dimensional regularization. This entails generalizing the definition of the irreducible mass and current multipole moments of an isolated PN source in $d$ spatial dimensions. In particular, we find that the current type moment has the symmetry of a particular mixed Young tableau and that, in addition, there appears a third type of moment which is however inexistent in 3 spatial dimensions.

Multipole Expansion of Gravitational Waves: from Harmonic to Bondi coordinates

We transform the metric of an isolated matter source in the multipolar post-Minkowskian approximation from harmonic (de Donder) coordinates to radiative Newman-Unti (NU) coordinates. To linearized order, we obtain the NU metric as a functional of the mass and current multipole moments of the source, valid all-over the exterior region of the source. Imposing appropriate boundary conditions we recover the generalized Bondi-van der Burg-Metzner-Sachs residual symmetry group. To quadratic order, in the case of the mass-quadrupole interaction, we determine the contributions of gravitational-wave tails in the NU metric, and prove that the expansion of the metric in terms of the radius is regular to all orders. The mass and angular momentum aspects, as well as the Bondi shear, are read off from the metric. They are given by the radiative quadrupole moment including the tail terms.

Hamiltonian for tidal interactions in compact binary systems to next-to-next-to-leading post-Newtonian order

In previous works, we obtained the leading, next-to-leading and next-to-next-to-leading (NNL) post-Newtonian (PN) corrections in the conservative tidal interactions between two compact non-spinning objects using a Lagrangian of effective field theory (EFT) in harmonic coordinates. In the present paper, we compute the corresponding NNL PN tidal effective Hamiltonian in ADM-like and isotropic coordinates, with contributions from mass quadrupole, current quadrupole and mass octupole tidal interactions, consistently included at that level. We also derive the NNL tidal Hamiltonian in Delaunay variables. We find full agreement in the overlap with recent results that were derived using tools from scattering amplitudes and the EFT to second post-Minkowskian (PM) order.

Tidal effects in the equations of motion of compact binary systems to next-to-next-to-leading post-Newtonian order

As a first step in the computation of the orbital phase evolution of spinless compact binaries including tidal effects up to the next-to-next-to-leading (NNL) order, we obtain the equations of motion of those systems and the associated conserved integrals in harmonic coordinates. The internal structure and finite size effects of the compact objects are described by means of an effective Fokker-type action. Our results, complete to the NNL order, correspond to the second-post-Newtonian (2PN) approximation beyond the leading tidal effect itself, already occurring at the 5PN order. They are parametrized by three polarizability (or deformability) coefficients describing the mass quadrupolar, mass octupolar and current quadrupolar deformations of the objects through tidal interactions. Up to the next-to-leading (NL) order, we recover previous results in the literature; up to the NNL order for quasi-circular orbits, we confirm the known tidal effects in the (PN re-expansion of the) effective-one-body (EOB) Hamiltonian. In a future work, we shall derive the tidal contributions to the gravitational-wave flux up to the NNL order, which is the second step required to find the orbital phase evolution.

The mass quadrupole moment of compact binary systems at the fourth post-Newtonian order

The mass-type quadrupole moment of inspiralling compact binaries (without spins) is computed at the fourth post-Newtonian (4PN) approximation of general relativity. The multipole moments are defined by matching between the field in the exterior zone of the matter system and the PN field in the near zone, following the multipolar-post-Minkowskian (MPM)-PN formalism. The matching implies a specific regularization for handling infra-red (IR) divergences of the multipole moments at infinity, based on the Hadamard finite part procedure. On the other hand, the calculation entails ultra-violet (UV) divergences due to the modelling of compact objects by delta-functions, that are treated with dimensional regularization (DR). In future work we intend to systematically study the IR divergences by means of dimensional regularization as well. Our result constitutes an important step in the goal of obtaining the gravitational wave templates of inspiralling compact binary systems with 4PN/4.5PN accuracy.

Gravitational-wave amplitudes for compact binaries in eccentric orbits at the third post-Newtonian order: Memory contributions

We compute the non-linear memory contributions to the gravitational-wave amplitudes for compact binaries in eccentric orbits at the third post-Newtonian (3PN) order in general relativity. These contributions are hereditary in nature as they are sourced by gravitational waves emitted during the binary's entire dynamical past. Combining these with already available instantaneous and tail contributions we get the complete 3PN accurate gravitational waveform.
