Stein's method, Malliavin calculus, Dirichlet forms and the fourth moment theorem

The fourth moment theorem provides error bounds of the order $\sqrt{{\mathbb E}(F^4) - 3}$ in the central limit theorem for elements $F$ of Wiener chaos of any order such that ${\mathbb E}(F^2) = 1$. It was proved by Nourdin and Peccati (2009) using Stein's method and the Malliavin calculus. It was also proved by Azmoodeh, Campese and Poly (2014) using Stein's method and Dirichlet forms. This paper is an exposition on the connections between Stein's method and the Malliavin calculus and between Stein's method and Dirichlet forms, and on how these connections are exploited in proving the fourth moment theorem.

The law of iterated logarithm for subordinated Gaussian sequences: uniform Wasserstein bounds

We develop a new method for showing that a given sequence of random variables verifies an appropriate law of the iterated logarithm. Our tools involve the use of general estimates on multidimensional Wasserstein distances, that are in turn based on recently developed inequalities involving Stein matrices and transport distances. Our main application consists in the proof of the exact law of the iterated logarithm for the Hermite variations of a fractional Brownian motion in the critical case.

Convergence towards linear combinations of chi-squared random variables: a Malliavin-based approach

We investigate the problem of finding necessary and sufficient conditions for convergence in distribution towards a general finite linear combination of independent chi-squared random variables, within the framework of random objects living on a fixed Gaussian space. Using a recent representation of cumulants in terms of the Malliavin calculus operators $Γ_i$ (introduced by Nourdin and Peccati in \cite{n-pe-3}), we provide conditions that apply to random variables living in a finite sum of Wiener chaoses. As an important by-product of our analysis, we shall derive a new proof and a new interpretation of a recent finding by Nourdin and Poly \cite{n-po-1}, concerning the limiting behaviour of random variables living in a Wiener chaos of order two. Our analysis contributes to a fertile line of research, that originates from questions raised by Marc Yor, in the framework of limit theorems for non-linear functionals of Brownian local times.

Classical and free Fourth Moment Theorems: universality and thresholds

Let $X$ be a centered random variable with unit variance, zero third moment, and such that $E[X^4] \ge 3$. Let $\{F_n : n\geq 1\}$ denote a normalized sequence of homogeneous sums of fixed degree $d\geq 2$, built from independent copies of $X$. Under these minimal conditions, we prove that $F_n$ converges in distribution to a standard Gaussian random variable if and only if the corresponding sequence of fourth moments converges to $3$. The statement is then extended (mutatis mutandis) to the free probability setting. We shall also discuss the optimality of our conditions in terms of explicit thresholds, as well as establish several connections with the so-called universality phenomenon of probability theory. Both in the classical and free probability frameworks, our results extend and unify previous Fourth Moment Theorems for Gaussian and semicircular approximations. Our techniques are based on a fine combinatorial analysis of higher moments for homogeneous sums.

An invariance principle under the total variation distance

Let $X_1,X_2,\ldots$ be a sequence of i.i.d. random variables, with mean zero and variance one. Let $W_n=(X_1+\ldots+X_n)/\sqrt{n}$. An old and celebrated result of Prohorov asserts that $W_n$ converges in total variation to the standard Gaussian distribution if and only if $W_{n_0}$ has an absolutely continuous component for some $n_0$. In the present paper, we give yet another proof and extend Prohorov's theorem to a situation where, instead of $W_n$, we consider more generally a sequence of homogoneous polynomials in the $X_i$. More precisely, we exhibit conditions for a recent invariance principle proved by Mossel, O'Donnel and Oleszkiewicz to hold under the total variation distance. There are many works about CLT under various metrics in the literature, but the present one seems to be the first attempt to deal with homogeneous polynomials in the $X_i$ with degree strictly greater than one.

Two properties of vectors of quadratic forms in Gaussian random variables

We study distributions of random vectors whose components are second order polynomials in Gaussian random variables. Assuming that the law of such a vector is not absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure, we derive some interesting consequences. Our second result gives a characterization of limits in law for sequences of such vectors.

Fourth Moment Theorems for Markov Diffusion Generators

Inspired by the insightful article arXiv:1210.7587, we revisit the Nualart-Peccati-criterion arXiv:math/0503598 (now known as the Fourth Moment Theorem) from the point of view of spectral theory of general Markov diffusion generators. We are not only able to drastically simplify all of its previous proofs, but also to provide new settings of diffusive generators (Laguerre, Jacobi) where such a criterion holds. Convergence towards gamma and beta distributions under moment conditions is also discussed.

Convergence in law implies convergence in total variation for polynomials in independent Gaussian, Gamma or Beta random variables

Consider a sequence of polynomials of bounded degree evaluated in independent Gaussian, Gamma or Beta random variables. We show that, if this sequence converges in law to a nonconstant distribution, then (i) the limit distribution is necessarily absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure and (ii) the convergence automatically takes place in the total variation topology. Our proof, which relies on the Carbery-Wright inequality and makes use of a diffusive Markov operator approach, extends the results of \cite{NP} to the Gamma and Beta cases.

Absolute continuity and convergence of densities for random vectors on Wiener chaos

The aim of this paper is to establish some new results on the absolute continuity and the convergence in total variation for a sequence of d-dimensional vectors whose components belong to a finite sum of Wiener chaoses. First we show that the probability that the determinant of the Malliavin matrix of such vectors vanishes is zero or one, and this probability equals to one is equivalent to say that the vector takes values in the set of zeros of a polynomial. We provide a bound for the degree of this annihilating polynomial improving a result by Kusuoka. On the other hand, we show that the convergence in law implies the convergence in total variation, extending to the multivariate case a recent result by Nourdin and Poly. This follows from an inequality relating the total variation distance with the Fortet-Mourier distance. Finally, applications to some particular cases are discussed.

Convergence in law in the second Wiener/Wigner chaos

Let L be the class of limiting laws associated with sequences in the second Wiener chaos. We exhibit a large subset L_0 of L satisfying that, for any F_infinity in L_0, the convergence of only a finite number of cumulants suffices to imply the convergence in law of any sequence in the second Wiener chaos to F_infinity. This result is in the spirit of the seminal paper by Nualart and Peccati, in which the authors discovered the surprising fact that convergence in law for sequences of multiple Wiener-Itô integrals to the Gaussian is equivalent to convergence of just the fourth cumulant. Also, we offer analogues of this result in the case of free Brownian motion and double Wigner integrals, in the context of free probability.

Convergence in total variation on Wiener chaos

Let ${F_n}$ be a sequence of random variables belonging to a finite sum of Wiener chaoses. Assume further that it converges in distribution towards $F_\infty$ satisfying ${\rm Var}(F_\infty)>0$. Our first result is a sequential version of a theorem by Shigekawa (1980). More precisely, we prove, without additional assumptions, that the sequence ${F_n}$ actually converges in total variation and that the law of $F_\infty$ is absolutely continuous. We give an application to discrete non-Gaussian chaoses. In a second part, we assume that each $F_n$ has more specifically the form of a multiple Wiener-Itô integral (of a fixed order) and that it converges in $L^2(Ω)$ towards $F_\infty$. We then give an upper bound for the distance in total variation between the laws of $F_n$ and $F_\infty$. As such, we recover an inequality due to Davydov and Martynova (1987); our rate is weaker compared to Davydov and Martynova (1987) (by a power of 1/2), but the advantage is that our proof is not only sketched as in Davydov and Martynova (1987). Finally, in a third part we show that the convergence in the celebrated Peccati-Tudor theorem actually holds in the total variation topology.
