Platform and Framework for Time-Resolved Nanoscale Thermal Transport Measurements in STEM

Understanding heat transport at the nanometer scale is critical for semiconductor devices, quantum materials, and thermal management of nanostructures, yet direct local measurements of thermal conductivity and heat capacity remain scarce. We developed a laser-excitation system integrated into a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) for nanoscale thermal transport measurements using ultra-high-resolution electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). A fiber-coupled laser is introduced via a modified aperture mechanism, enabling flexible holder geometries and large tilt angles without optical elements in the polepiece gap. Synchronization of pulsed laser excitation with an externally gated direct electron detector provides temporal resolution about 50 ns at <10 meV energy resolution. Local temperatures are determined via the principle of detailed balance, and thermal transport parameters are extracted by fitting a forward-time central-space heat diffusion model including radiative losses. For amorphous carbon films, we obtain a thermal conductivity of 1.24 $\frac{W}{m\cdot K}$ and a heat capacity of 821 $\frac{J}{kg\cdot K}$, consistent with literature. This framework enables time-resolved nanoscale measurements of thermal transport in materials and devices.

Vibrational properties of epitaxial graphene buffer layer on silicon carbide

The vibrational properties of semiconducting graphene buffer layer epitaxially grown on hexagonal silicon carbide are determined using first-principles calculations on a realistic structural model. Despite the important chemical and structural disorder associated with the partial covalent bonding with the substrate, the buffer-layer carbon atoms still display quasidispersive phonons mimicking those of graphene. The related frequency softening and broadening provide a natural interpretation of the measured Raman signal. The vibrations determining thermal conduction are found to delocalize completely on the SiC substrate, leading to an effective spatial separation between material components determining, respectively, electronic and thermal transport properties. This situation opens perspectives for thermoelectric applications.

Parametrization of the Coulomb interaction matrix with point-group symmetry

Coulomb integrals, i.e., matrix elements of bare or screened Coulomb interaction between one-electron orbitals, are fundamental objects in many approaches developed to tackle the challenging problem of calculating the electronic structure of strongly correlated materials. In this paper, Coulomb integrals are analyzed by considering both the point group symmetry of the site occupied by the atom in the crystal or molecule and the permutation symmetries of the orbitals in the integrals. In particular, the case where one-electron orbitals form the basis of a general (i.e. a real, complex or pseudo-complex) irreducible representation is considered. Explicit formulas are provided to calculate all integrals of the interaction tensor in terms of a minimum set of independent ones. The effect of a symmetry breaking is also investigated by describing Coulomb integrals of a group in terms of those of one of its subgroups. We develope the specific example of O(3) as the larger group which can therefore be used to quantify the deviation of a specific system from the spherical symmetry. Possible applications of the presented framework include the calculation of solid-state and molecular spectroscopies via multiplet techniques, dynamical mean-field theory or the GW approximation.

Triplet excitations in the frustrated spin ladder Li$_2$Cu$_2$O(SO$_4$)$_2$

Magnetic excitations of the recently discovered frustrated spin-1/2 two-leg ladder system Li$_2$Cu$_2$O(SO$_4$)$_2$ are investigated using inelastic neutron scattering, magnetic susceptibility and infrared absorption measurements. Despite the presence of a magnetic dimerization concomitant with the tetragonal-to-triclinic structural distortion occurring below 125 K, neutron scattering experiments reveal the presence of dispersive triplet excitations above a spin gap of $Δ= 10.6$ meV at 1.5 K, a value consistent with the estimates extracted from magnetic susceptibility. The likely detection of these spin excitations in infrared spectroscopy is explained by invoking a dynamic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya mechanism in which light is coupled to the dimer singlet-to-triplet transition through an optical phonon. These results are qualitatively explained by exact diagonalization and higher-order perturbation calculations carried out on the basis of the dimerized spin Hamiltonian derived from first-principles.

Quasi-two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensation of spin triplets in dimerized quantum magnet Ba$_2$CuSi$_2$O$_6$Cl$_2$

We synthesized single crystals of composition Ba$_2$CuSi$_2$O$_6$Cl$_2$ and investigated its quantum magnetic properties. The crystal structure is closely related to that of the quasi-two-dimensional (2D) dimerized magnet BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$ also known as Han purple. Ba$_2$CuSi$_2$O$_6$Cl$_2$ has a singlet ground state with an excitation gap of $Δ/k_{\rm B}\,{=}\,20.8$ K. The magnetization curves for two different field directions almost perfectly coincide when normalized by the $g$-factor except for a small jump anomaly for a magnetic field perpendicular to the $c$ axis. The magnetization curve with a nonlinear slope above the critical field is in excellent agreement with exact-diagonalization calculations based on a 2D coupled spin-dimer model. Individual exchange constants are also evaluated using density functional theory (DFT). The DFT results demonstrate a 2D exchange network and weak frustration between interdimer exchange interactions, supported by weak spin-lattice coupling implied from our magnetostriction data. The magnetic-field-induced spin ordering in Ba$_2$CuSi$_2$O$_6$Cl$_2$ is described as the quasi-2D Bose-Einstein condensation of triplets.
