Statistical benchmarking of transformer models in low signal-to-noise time-series forecasting

We study the performance of transformer architectures for multivariate time-series forecasting in low-data regimes consisting of only a few years of daily observations. Using synthetically generated processes with known temporal and cross-sectional dependency structures and varying signal-to-noise ratios, we conduct bootstrapped experiments that enable direct evaluation via out-of-sample correlations with the optimal ground-truth predictor. We show that two-way attention transformers, which alternate between temporal and cross-sectional self-attention, can outperform standard baselines-Lasso, boosting methods, and fully connected multilayer perceptrons-across a wide range of settings, including low signal-to-noise regimes. We further introduce a dynamic sparsification procedure for attention matrices applied during training, and demonstrate that it becomes significantly effective in noisy environments, where the correlation between the target variable and the optimal predictor is on the order of a few percent. Analysis of the learned attention patterns reveals interpretable structure and suggests connections to sparsity-inducing regularization in classical regression, providing insight into why these models generalize effectively under noise.

The moduli of annuli in random conformal geometry

We obtain exact formulae for three basic quantities in random conformal geometry that depend on the modulus of an annulus. The first is for the law of the modulus of the Brownian annulus describing the scaling limit of uniformly sampled planar maps with annular topology, which is as predicted from the ghost partition function in bosonic string theory. The second is for the law of the modulus of the annulus bounded by a loop of a simple conformal loop ensemble (CLE) on a disk and the disk boundary. The formula is as conjectured from the partition function of the O$(n)$ loop model on the annulus derived by Saleur-Bauer (1989) and Cardy (2006). The third is for the annulus partition function of the SLE$_{8/3}$ loop introduced by Werner (2008), {confirming another} prediction of Cardy (2006). The physics principle underlying our proofs is that 2D quantum gravity coupled with conformal matters can be decomposed into three conformal field theories (CFT): the matter CFT, the Liouville CFT, and the ghost CFT. At the technical level, we rely on two types of integrability in Liouville quantum gravity, one from the scaling limit of random planar maps, the other from the Liouville CFT.

Derivation of all structure constants for boundary Liouville CFT

We prove that the probabilistic definition of the most general boundary three-point and bulk-boundary structure constants in Liouville conformal field theory (LCFT) agree respectively with the formula proposed by Ponsot-Techsner (2002) and by Hosomichi (2001). These formulas also respectively describe the fusion kernel and modular kernel of the Virasoro conformal blocks, which are important functions in various contexts of mathematical physics. As an intermediate step, we obtain the formula for the boundary reflection coefficient of LCFT proposed by Fateev-Zamolodchikov-Zamolodchikov (2000). Our proof relies on the boundary Belavin-Polyakov-Zamolodchikov differential equation recently proved by the first named author, and inputs from the coupling theory of Liouville quantum gravity (LQG) and Schramm Loewner evolution. Our results supply all the structure constants needed to perform the conformal bootstrap for boundary LCFT. They also yield exact descriptions for the joint law of the area and boundary lengths of basic LQG surfaces, including quantum triangles and two-pointed quantum disks.

Probabilistic conformal blocks for Liouville CFT on the torus

Virasoro conformal blocks are a family of important functions defined as power series via the Virasoro algebra. They are a fundamental input to the conformal bootstrap program for 2D conformal field theory (CFT) and are closely related to four dimensional supersymmetric gauge theory through the Alday-Gaiotto-Tachikawa correspondence. The present work provides a probabilistic construction of the 1-point toric Virasoro conformal block for central change greater than 25. More precisely, we construct an analytic function using a probabilistic tool called Gaussian multiplicative chaos (GMC) and prove that its power series expansion coincides with the 1-point toric Virasoro conformal block. The range $(25,\infty)$ of central charges corresponds to Liouville CFT, an important CFT originating from 2D quantum gravity and bosonic string theory. Our work reveals a new integrable structure underlying GMC and opens the door to the study of non-perturbative properties of Virasoro conformal blocks such as their analytic continuation and modular symmetry. Our proof combines an analysis of GMC with tools from CFT such as Belavin-Polyakov-Zamolodchikov differential equations, operator product expansions, and Dotsenko-Fateev type integrals.

Integrability of boundary Liouville conformal field theory

Liouville conformal field theory (LCFT) is considered on a simply connected domain with boundary, specializing to the case where the Liouville potential is integrated only over the boundary of the domain. We work in the probabilistic framework of boundary LCFT introduced by Huang-Rhodes-Vargas (2015). Building upon the known proof of the bulk one-point function by the first author, exact formulas are rigorously derived for the remaining basic correlation functions of the theory, i.e., the bulk-boundary correlator, the boundary two-point and the boundary three-point functions. These four correlations should be seen as the fundamental building blocks of boundary Liouville theory, playing the analogue role of the DOZZ formula in the case of the Riemann sphere. Our study of boundary LCFT also provides the general framework to understand the integrability of one-dimensional Gaussian multiplicative chaos measures as well as their tail expansions. Finally these results have applications to studying the conformal blocks of CFT and set the stage for the more general case of boundary LCFT with both bulk and boundary Liouville potentials.

FZZ formula of boundary Liouville CFT via conformal welding

Liouville Conformal Field Theory (LCFT) on the disk describes the conformal factor of the quantum disk, which is the natural random surface in Liouville quantum gravity with disk topology. Fateev, Zamolodchikov and Zamolodchikov (2000) proposed an explicit expression, the so-called the FZZ formula, for the one-point bulk structure constant for LCFT on the disk. In this paper we give a proof of the FZZ formula in the probabilistic framework of LCFT, which represents the first step towards rigorously solving boundary LCFT using conformal bootstrap. In contrast to previous works, our proof is based on conformal welding of quantum disks and the mating-of-trees theory for Liouville quantum gravity. As a byproduct of our proof, we also obtain the exact value of the variance for the Brownian motion in the mating-of-trees theory. Our paper is an essential part of an ongoing program proving integrability results for Schramm-Loewner evolutions, LCFT, and in the mating-of-trees theory.

Liouville quantum gravity with matter central charge in $(1,25)$: a probabilistic approach

There is a substantial literature concerning Liouville quantum gravity (LQG) in two dimensions with conformal matter field of central charge ${\mathbf{c}}_{\mathrm M}\in(-\infty,1]$. Via the DDK ansatz, LQG can equivalently be described as the random geometry obtained by exponentiating $γ$ times a variant of the planar Gaussian free field (GFF), where $γ\in(0,2]$ satisfies $\mathbf c_{\mathrm M}=25-6(2/γ+γ/2)^2$. Physics considerations suggest that LQG should also make sense in the regime when $\mathbf c_{\mathrm M}>1$. However, the behavior in this regime is rather mysterious in part because the corresponding value of $γ$ is complex, so analytic continuations of various formulas give complex answers which are difficult to interpret in a probabilistic setting. We introduce and study a discretization of LQG which makes sense for all values of $\mathbf c_{\mathrm M}\in(-\infty,25)$. Our discretization consists of a random planar map, defined as the adjacency graph of a tiling of the plane by dyadic squares which all have approximately the same "LQG size" with respect to the GFF. We prove that several formulas for dimension-related quantities are still valid for $\mathbf c_{\mathrm M}\in(1,25)$, with the caveat that the dimension is infinite when the formulas give a complex answer. In particular, we prove an extension of the (geometric) KPZ formula for $\mathbf c_{\mathrm M}\in(1,25)$, which gives a finite quantum dimension iff the Euclidean dimension is at most $(25-\mathbf c_{\mathrm M})/12$. We also show that the graph distance between typical points with respect to our discrete model grows polynomially whereas the cardinality of a graph distance ball of radius $r$ grows faster than any power of $r$ (which suggests that the Hausdorff dimension of LQG is infinite for $\mathbf c_{\mathrm M}\in(1,25)$). We include a substantial list of open problems.

The distribution of Gaussian multiplicative chaos on the unit interval

We consider a sub-critical Gaussian multiplicative chaos (GMC) measure defined on the unit interval [0,1] and prove an exact formula for the fractional moments of the total mass of this measure. Our formula includes the case where log-singularities (also called insertion points) are added in 0 and 1, the most general case predicted by the Selberg integral. The idea to perform this computation is to introduce certain auxiliary functions resembling holomorphic observables of conformal field theory that will be solutions of hypergeometric equations. Solving these equations then provides non-trivial relations that completely determine the moments we wish to compute. We also include a detailed discussion of the so-called reflection coefficients appearing in tail expansions of GMC measures and in Liouville theory. Our theorem provides an exact value for one of these coefficients. Lastly we mention some additional applications to small deviations for GMC measures, to the behavior of the maximum of the log-correlated field on the interval and to random hermitian matrices.

The Fyodorov-Bouchaud formula and Liouville conformal field theory

In a remarkable paper in 2008, Fyodorov and Bouchaud conjectured an exact formula for the density of the total mass of (sub-critical) Gaussian multiplicative chaos (GMC) associated to the Gaussian free field (GFF) on the unit circle. In this paper we will give a proof of this formula. In the mathematical literature this is the first occurrence of an explicit probability density for the total mass of a GMC measure. The key observation of our proof is that the negative moments of the total mass of GMC determine its law and are equal to one-point correlation functions of Liouville conformal field theory in the disk defined by Huang, Rhodes and Vargas. The rest of the proof then consists in implementing rigorously the framework of conformal field theory (BPZ equations for degenerate field insertions) in a probabilistic setting to compute the negative moments. Finally we will discuss applications to random matrix theory, asymptotics of the maximum of the GFF and tail expansions of GMC.

Liouville quantum gravity on the annulus

In this work we construct Liouville quantum gravity on an annulus in the complex plane. This construction is aimed at providing a rigorous mathematical framework to the work of theoretical physicists initiated by Polyakov in 1981. It is also a very important example of a conformal field theory (CFT). Results have already been obtained on the Riemann sphere and on the unit disk so this paper will follow the same approach. The case of the annulus contains two difficulties: it is a surface with two boundaries and it has a non-trivial moduli space. We recover the Weyl anomaly - a formula verified by all CFT - and deduce from it the KPZ formula. We also show that the full partition function of Liouville quantum gravity integrated over the moduli space is finite. This allows us to give the joint law of the Liouville measures and of the random modulus and to write the conjectured link with random planar maps.
